Chapter 39 - 39. why is he here?

His jaw clenched. His pulse spiked.

I am doing everything in my power not to become the version of Rain she created in her imagination. Please… don't tempt me, he begged his own mind.

"Hm, fine… I'll just tug you till you sleep. Nothing more," Rain said quietly as he settled down beside her, keeping a deliberate gap between them.

He didn't get to keep it.

The very next second, Daisy curled into him. Her whole body pressed to his like a baby koala hanging on its favorite tree.

Rain went still.

Her warmth. Her scent. Her breath against his neck. It all screamed danger.

He started thinking of multiplication tables - anything, anything to stop the thoughts that her body was forcing into his mind. He had no intention of ever touching a drunk Daisy, not even by accident.

The loud heartbeat in his chest.

The steady heartbeat in hers.

With their hearts beating in the same tempo, almost like a lullaby pulling them under, they drifted… slowly, helplessly… into sleep. Side by side. Like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Next morning

Daisy tried to flip to her other side in her sleep but something held her in place. A firm, unmovable grip wrapped around her waist.

Her forehead scrunched in confusion, and she blinked her eyes open groggily.

Mr. Rain?! her eyes widened

Rain was right there beside her, asleep, his arm locked around her body like she belonged in that space.

Wait… why is he here? Maybe I'm still dreaming, she thought, staring at his peacefully sleeping face.

She shut her eyes tight and opened them again.

He was still there. Panic fluttered in her chest. She tried lifting herself carefully, slowly, hoping to slip out of his arm without waking him.

"Escaping, kitty?" Rain murmured in a low, sleepy voice as he pulled her back by the waist, pressing her against his chest again.

Daisy froze.

"K-Kitty? I'm… I'm sorry, but why are we together? Why are we… in my room?" she stuttered.

Rain opened his eyes halfway, studying her expression.

"You don't remember what we did yesterday?" he asked, voice calm.

Daisy's heart dropped to her stomach.

My legs don't feel weak… so we didn't do anything out of my books… then...

She slowly looked down. Rain was fully dressed.

But she…

Her shirt was unbuttoned halfway, enough that her undergarments were clearly visible.

Her breath caught.

What… what did we do? Why am I like this? What did I say? What did I do?!!!

Her mind screamed inside so loudly she couldn't hear anything else.

Her mortified expression made Rain sigh softly, somewhere between amused and fond but he said nothing, letting her drown in mystery a moment longer.

"wh - what exactly happened?" she asked, voice cracking with panic.

Rain didn't answer immediately. He just stretched lazily, like someone who had the best sleep of his life, while Daisy was busy having a meltdown.
