When Smoker saw his fist shatter, he didn't panic.
He was a Logia-type Devil Fruit user.
With a thought, the shattered fist turned into smoke, reassembled, and split into two fists again.
Elementalization made him immune to most physical attacks.
Including explosions like that.
Boom.
The next second, Smoker's entire body exploded.
His form scattered into a thick cloud of smoke with a sharp, pungent smell.
A few seconds later, the smoke gathered again.
Smoker's body re-formed.
But his face was deathly pale.
Logia-type Devil Fruits were widely regarded as the strongest of the three categories.
Their defining trait was elementalization-rendering physical attacks meaningless.
But that didn't mean they were immune to everything.
Emiya had used the Bomu Bomu no Mi to wrap his Psychic force around Smoker's body.
Then he detonated it.
Smoker's body had been shattered from the inside.
He'd elementalized at the last moment.
He avoided death.
But the explosion still injured him.
"Damn it."
Smoker clenched his teeth.
Now he understood just how troublesome invisible attacks were.
You couldn't see them.
You couldn't block them.
He stared at Emiya, fully alert, ready to elementalize at any moment.
Emiya made one last attempt. "Can we talk?"
"No," Smoker said flatly. "I have nothing to say to pirates. You're here for my Devil Fruit ability, aren't you? Don't dream. You'll never take it."
He punched through the wall behind him and leapt out.
The room was too cramped.
He needed open space to fight.
Emiya watched him flee and laughed quietly.
He had zero interest in the Smoke-Smoke Fruit.
Compared to the Glint-Glint Fruit or the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, it was mediocre at best.
He scratched his head, turned back to Nami and Nojiko, and said, "Looks like the plan failed."
Smoker had completely misunderstood their intentions.
He wasn't willing to talk at all.
Sure, they could talk.
After Emiya was captured.
But that wasn't happening.
"It's fine," Nami said, smiling faintly despite the disappointment. "I never had much faith in the Marines anyway."
"Then let's leave," Emiya said.
He could already hear hurried footsteps approaching.
Reinforcements.
To avoid being surrounded, Emiya opened a wall, activated the Space Gate, and returned to Cocoyasi Village.
Bang.
Not long after, Marine soldiers rushed into the room.
At their head was a woman with glasses and a katana.
"Captain Smoker? What happened-hm?"
She stared at the empty room, confused.
Outside, in an open field, Smoker stood on high alert.
Eyes sharp.
Senses stretched.
Waiting for another invisible strike.
Back in Cocoyasi Village, Emiya's group sat on the sofa, discussing their next move.
Shizuka reached for a cigarette.
Empty pockets.
She gave up and sighed. "Looks like we can't rely on the Marines. Nami and Nojiko got dragged into this because of us."
"No," Nami said quickly. "Please don't say that. We already feel guilty that Emiya got a bounty because of us."
Nojiko nodded.
Emiya shook his head. "You're overthinking it. I couldn't have been wanted that fast just for attacking Branches 16 and 153. The Marines aren't that efficient."
He paused.
"The real reason is that I attacked a CP9 agent under the World Government and took his Devil Fruit."
Silence.
Nami: ...
Nojiko: ...
Shizuka pressed her palm to her forehead.
You're way too honest.
"Alright," she said, waving her hand. "Let's ignore why for now. What matters is what we do next."
Nami hesitated. "What if I go with you?"
If she and Nojiko were wanted, staying here wouldn't be safe.
Shizuka sighed. "At the moment, that might be the only option."
Emiya thought briefly. "Let's wait and see how the Marines respond. If they issue wanted posters, we take Nami with us. If not, things can return to normal."
Everyone agreed.
So Emiya and Shizuka stayed in Cocoyasi Village and waited.
Meanwhile, Nami and Nojiko began learning Fish-Man Karate from Shizuka.
Preparation for the worst.
On the third day, the wanted posters still hadn't arrived.
But Loki did.
She brought Issho-newly joined to the Loki Familia-and Robin with her.
The reason was simple.
If nothing went wrong, the Loki Familia's dungeon expedition would be ending soon.
Loki wanted to return to the DanMachi world to welcome them back.
She also planned to introduce Den Den Mushi, running ducks, and Vivre Cards to that world.
So Emiya sent Loki back.
Issho and Robin stayed behind.
They both still had unfinished business here.
But this incident made one thing clear to everyone.
Emiya and Shizuka weren't from this world.
Curiosity followed naturally.
"What is the other world like?" Issho asked after Loki left.
"There are many worlds," Emiya said. "Worlds of war. Worlds of peace. Highly advanced worlds. Worlds filled with amazing food."
"What about yours?" Nami asked.
"I'm from a very peaceful one," Shizuka said. "Some places still fight, but most are stable."
"My world is similar," Emiya added.
"No pirates?" Robin asked calmly.
"There used to be," Emiya said. "But piracy is long gone. It's a relic of history."
Robin's eyes flickered.
A world without pirates was hard to imagine.
"What about kings?" Issho asked. "What are they like?"
"In my world," Shizuka said, "most kings are figureheads. Many countries don't even have kings anymore."
Issho was shocked. "Then who leads the people?"
"We still have leaders," she replied. "But they're chosen by the people."
"That sounds the same as a king," Issho said.
"It's different," Shizuka shook her head. "Their power is limited. They can't rule however they want. They can't pass authority to their children."
"And their terms are short. If they fail, the people remove them."
"In our world, the people are the masters."
Emiya listened without objection.
She wasn't wrong.
Issho fell silent, deeply shaken.
"Can I visit your world?" he asked Emiya.
Emiya considered it. "Not right now. I'll take you when the time's right."
Both his and Shizuka's worlds had One Piece manga.
Taking Issho there would raise too many questions.
Too much trouble.
He decided to wait until he reached a modern world without One Piece.
Issho didn't mind.
He was just glad Emiya hadn't refused.
He could wait.
Over the next few days, Issho and Robin stayed in Cocoyasi Village.
Issho began teaching Fish-Man Karate.
He'd never practiced it himself.
But he was a martial arts master and proficient in two types of Haki.
After reading the notes once, he understood it better than Shizuka ever had.
Teaching was effortless.
Under his guidance, everyone finally grasped the basics.
Now, all that remained was relentless practice.
Then the news arrived.
The news Emiya had been waiting for.
A Marine wanted poster.
