Chapter 43: Woe, What a Day.
~~~ [START]
"Nevermore was created as a haven for our children," Principal Weems said, standing on a palladium, looking down at the students gathered around with their parents and teachers. "I realize most of you have heard about our unfortunate problem that occurred a day ago. All I can say is that no student was in any danger or injured when the intruders entered. Nevermore takes student safety as a top priority, so I plead with you all, put your trust in us, as you have done for the past decades. Let us be the pillar."
The crowd clapped their hands at her words, a smile rising on her lips. But with the smile came a shift in gaze, as her eyes turned to Ash, who was standing near Ajax and Xavier, causing him to laugh nervously, looking away while scratching the back of his neck.
"Damn, man, that stuff really happened, huh?" Eric said, shaking his head, eyes turning to look around for his parents. "And of course, stuff like that happens right before the worst day of the year."
"Eric!" a woman who was accompanied by three identical small children shouted from the back, waving toward him.
"Okay, guys, I have to go," he said, walking away. "I'll see you freaks in the evening."
"Yeah, I have to leave too," Ajax shot next. "Family just called." He made a peace sign with his hand as both Ash and Xavier nodded.
Xavier hung his arm around Ash's shoulder.
"Why so quiet?" he questioned, noting how Ash hadn't made his usual remarks; in fact, Ash hadn't said anything. "Are you…"
"Xavier!" someone called from afar, causing Xavier to glance back. Right there, standing by the gate, was a figure waiting near a black limo; his father's receptionist.
He nearly finished his sentence, but the woman waiting there pointed a finger, tapping her watch, indicating that Xavier was wasting too much time.
Xavier sighed, letting go of Ash's shoulder.
"I'll see you when I get back," he said, also walking away, leaving Ash all alone, watching, waiting, for absolutely nothing.
But then, completely due to coincidence, Ash's eyes locked with another's.
A woman.
Dressed entirely in black clothing, with black hair slung over her shoulder, staring directly into his eyes.
The woman didn't even attempt to glance away; she just kept staring, smiling as though recognizing him.
Ash smiled awkwardly, nodding his head in an attempt to walk away. Yet before he could, his eyes caught sight of the others.
A chubby boy standing beside a fat father. An awkwardly tall man who oddly resembled the dead.
Then it clicked, far too late than it should have.
They were all wearing black, which could only mean one thing.
"We need to talk."
Wednesday snapped him out of his thoughts, causing him to turn back, awkwardly smiling at how close she had neared.
"Wednesday," Ash said, stepping back slightly while forcing a laugh.
But she walked away, moving past him, making her way toward her family.
Ash just smirked at her retreat, shaking his head, turning and making his way to his room.
Perhaps to drain the seconds playing video games on Xavier's PS5, or maybe he only needed some sleep.
Because in all honesty, he wasn't feeling well.
Was it pain?
Was it sickness?
He didn't know.
Envy?
No, the answer was far too simple for that.
Even if he couldn't figure it out, he was sure it wasn't complex.
But one thing truly bothered him, something that made him think.
He had revealed too much.
"Shouldn't have taken ten glasses," he whispered to himself, regret creeping in, or maybe, its attempt.
{AROUND THE CORNER}
"How do you know him?" Wednesday didn't hesitate. She noted how her mother nearly jumped at the words of her question.
"Know who?" her mother asked, hand raising to Wednesday's cheek.
"Stop acting stupid, Morticia. I saw you glaring at him."
"My love, you flatter me so, but I have no idea what you mean," she said, her smile unbroken.
"Neither I nor Grandmama showed you his picture," Wednesday's eyes narrowed. "We never told you what he looks like, yet you seem to know exactly who he is. How?"
Morticia giggled, amused by Wednesday's words.
"You don't just stare at anyone, Mother, especially not for that long," Wednesday continued, face stone as usual. "Don't gaslight me."
"Oh, my little rain cloud, you know so little of me," Morticia said, hands raising to her chest. "It warms my heart."
And without question, Morticia started walking away, hips swaying with each of her steps, causing Wednesday to unintentionally follow behind her.
"My love," Morticia called to the fat man, causing him to instantly turn to her, making his way to her in an instant. "Don't you think it would be stunning if Wednesday introduced us to her potential betrothed?"
Wednesday nearly spoke in protest, but it was already proving too late.
"Oh yes, my honeycomb, that's a wonderful idea."
Wednesday could only narrow her eyes in suspicion, already far too deep in the dark.
There was too much she didn't know, too much everyone was hiding.
And it unsettled her.
