Chapter 117 – What Must Be Done

Having manipulated the light and taken control of the darkness to exterminate as many vampires as possible brought its disadvantages in the underground battle.

As he climbed the stairs, Jonathan saw an elite soldier restraining Seth, who was resisting arrest, while Lisa was somehow trying to stop the other agents from hurting him. "What's going on here?"

Jonathan's cold question drew everyone's attention. The soldiers straightened up, and one of them approached to report. "Sir, this man wanted to enter the basement to prevent us from eliminating the vampires because he believes his brother is still alive."

"Just because of that?" Jonathan looked up and stared directly at Seth, who was handcuffed.

Seth looked at Jonathan and, not understanding, said: "Is there a problem?"

"Selfishness is a luxury many indulge in without being aware of it. Do you think you have the right to feel distressed just because you're afraid of being alone in this life? Open your eyes wide and look around you." Jonathan signaled the soldiers to release him and stepped closer.

Jacob, who had moved ahead using force, looked at Jonathan holding Seth by the neck.

The situation could have calmed down, but he still didn't know what kind of trouble they were in, so he preferred not to cause further issues.

"What right do you have to kill people who can be saved?" Seth raised his voice and asked with teary eyes, knowing he had lost his brother.

Thud!

Jonathan struck Seth in the stomach, and his cold gaze made many feel suffocated, but Lisa, who was nearby, immediately shouted: "What do you think you're doing?!"

"Don't interfere, Lisa…" Jacob murmured, who knew perfectly well who the regent standing before him was.

Ignoring everyone's stares, Jonathan grabbed Seth by the hair again and lifted him off the ground, dragging him through the house and saying: "I always recommend my soldiers fight for someone special and put aside that duty to humanity. If we fought for people like you, many would have questioned their duty as hunters."

Jonathan, having dragged Seth into an empty room, shouted at him: "Open your eyes, Seth. Look closely at what's in front of you."

When Seth opened his eyes, he saw four corpses of soldiers killed by vampires. All of them had emotionless faces, and none of them had even dropped their weapons.

"What do you see? Tell me—do you think your delinquent brother has more of a right to live than they do? The guilt of losing a loved one must be painful, but respect those who gave their lives for you at this moment!" Jonathan threw Seth aside, and seeing that everyone had calmed down, he sighed.

"This is what must be done. If we give ourselves the luxury of saving any human over lives that are truly useful in saving ten more, I will always choose my soldiers."

Jonathan may have been cruel, but he had been giving away small pieces of his life for people like this without receiving anything but complaints.

Why did my son die?

Why didn't you save my husband?

Why didn't you arrive in time?

"Maybe you don't understand us, but if you know that thousands of people die every day just so all of you can have your shitty lives, then you'll understand everything we fight for and you'll understand that the value of your brother's life means nothing to me." Jonathan said, and before leaving, he looked at a silent soldier standing nearby and ordered: "Take these good men to the vehicles and complete the conclusion of this incursion."

"Yes, sir…"

A man named Ludo walked up to Seth and said: "Don't blame him. It's said he'd rather be injured himself than lose someone in an incursion, but even someone like him can't save everyone."

"What will happen to me now?" Seth, as a murderer and criminal, thought these people would arrest him.

"You've killed many vampires; we can ignore your life, since you're insignificant to us. If you want to avenge your brother's death by killing more dark entities, all your crimes will be postponed as long as you kill monsters for the people you've murdered."

"I understand…"

When Jonathan went outside, he saw Wednesday placing bombs.

"Everything okay?"

Wednesday looked at Jonathan and said: "I'm fine. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Jonathan said, checking his phone after receiving a message.

"[Regent Jonathan Belmont, your mission has been completed. Eliminating the ancient vampire was given top priority, and now that the mission has been fulfilled, the church sends its congratulations.]"

"Go to hell…" Jonathan muttered as he closed his eyes, completely exhausted.

It might not seem like it, but this job had burned away much of his personality, and he preferred to stay farther and farther away from people each time.
