Chapter 111 - A Place for Adults

United States–Mexico border, Texas.

This place was desert-like in many ways; at least the spot where Jonathan and his team were passing had no nearby towns.

As Jonathan's trucks crossed the border without being checked and apparently in a hurry, a white RV was pulling out behind the trucks.

Inside that white RV were two brothers fleeing Mexico after having robbed a bank and killed several police officers and civilians. Their only objective was to get out of the United States, but before they could enjoy their victory they were being stopped by the police.

The minutes were long. Jacob Fuller was doing this for his family, because if he spoke his family would be killed before those brothers were arrested.

He appeared to have the situation under control, or at least that's what he seemed to think. He knew the only way nobody would get hurt was to take those brothers out of the United States and leave them somewhere once they reached Mexico.

"I don't understand." Jacob Fuller, who was now being held by the Gecko brothers, looked at those trucks with the T.O. insignia and thought there must be a mistake.

A few minutes later, Seth Gecko came out of the bathroom and asked, "What don't you get?"

"Those trucks ahead of us went through without being checked. Nobody stopped them; they even passed before us." Jacob said, very confused, because this was strange—after all, they were supposedly searching for these fugitive brothers.

Richard, the grosser of the Gecko brothers, looked out the window and said, "Yeah, well that's not our damn problem."

"Richard, watch your mouth. Now's the time to celebrate." Seth said as he came out with a bottle of wine.

"Goddamn it—can we open the windows now?"

"Do whatever you want. We're in Mexico, so move aside and let me celebrate with my new friends." Seth sat beside Jacob, who was driving.

His next words were friendly—he was, of course, more sensible than his psychopathic, cold-blooded killer brother.

Jacob picked up on that and celebrated beside him; all the nervousness about what they might do to his family vanished after crossing into Mexico. According to the plan, he would drop those brothers off at the Titty Twister, a bar especially for truckers and passing bikers.

Once he left them there, both parties would go their separate ways.

A few hours later, Jacob parked his RV beside the trucks he had seen earlier and was struck by how they hadn't been searched.

His gaze lingered on those two silent trucks and he shook his head; maybe he was overthinking it.

His vision was poor; he was a priest who had broken his faith after the loss of his wife, and now, having overcome death, few things mattered to him.

"All right, tonight we celebrate." Seth said as he walked toward the bar.

At that moment Jonathan stepped out of one of the trucks, followed by Wednesday and Father Doug, who had finally decided to accompany the group.

"Good thing God knows I'm a good priest," Father Doug said when he saw the appearance of the bar.

Jonathan smiled slightly and said, "Don't be fooled—maybe they're all enemies."

"Move, let's get a drink." Jonathan, after surveying the surroundings for a moment, headed for the bar.

At the entrance, a bearded man shouted into a microphone: "Come closer—if you want a lady with hair, without hair, a furry, or a damn alien, this is the place to find all your sexual fantasies."

Jonathan finally recognized where they were and fixed his gaze on the man who was shouting. But seconds later he lowered his eyes and whispered to Wednesday, "Help me—act drunk."

"Why's that?"

"They might accidentally reveal my eyes and scare the vampires."

"This is weird…" Father Doug stepped forward without even making eye contact with anyone.

Wednesday whispered to Jonathan, "I don't think we look like truckers."

Jonathan, about to say something, watched a man behind them hit the announcer who was hawking women as if this were heaven's brothel. Then he turned and said, "We just need to wait until midnight. I think that's when the real party happens."

"I don't doubt it."

"Let's go in."
