Dawn crept slowly across the canyon, pale light filtering through the narrow cave entrance while Shadow gathered the few supplies he still had left.
His body still ached from the previous day, but the stiffness in his muscles had eased enough for him to move properly again. Hunger gnawed constantly at his stomach now, sharper than before.
The dried fruit and roots Neto packed for him wouldn't last much longer.
Which meant hunting was no longer optional.
Shadow stepped cautiously out from the cave and scanned the canyon walls before moving deeper into the rocky terrain. Every sound immediately felt clearer than it had the day before—the scrape of loose gravel beneath his boots, distant wind pushing through narrow stone passages, even the faint shifting of small creatures hiding between cracks in the rocks.
The Trial World still felt dangerous.
But it no longer felt completely unfamiliar.
That alone made a difference.
Shadow spent the next several hours moving carefully through the canyon while searching for signs of life. Tracks became his first real lesson. Some creatures moved in packs while others hunted alone, and the terrain itself revealed far more than he initially realized. Large claw marks gouged deep into stone walls while smaller trails weaved between narrow cracks and shaded overhangs hidden from larger predators.
More than once, Shadow caught glimpses of movement disappearing between the rocks before he could properly react. The creatures here were fast, cautious, and constantly aware of their surroundings.
Then he saw it.
A small flash of silver darted between two boulders near the edge of the canyon.
Shadow immediately lowered himself against the rocks as the creature paused atop a narrow stone ledge several yards away.
It resembled a fox, though far smaller and leaner than any normal animal. Silver-white fur shimmered beneath the canyon light while faint strands of yellow mana drifted subtly around its body like smoke.
Elite rank.
Shadow narrowed his eyes slightly. The creature was still young, far too small to be fully grown, but even from this distance he could sense the alert intelligence in its movements. One ear twitched constantly while pale golden eyes studied him with obvious caution.
Then he noticed the blood staining part of its hind leg.
Injured.
The fox backed away the moment Shadow shifted slightly, but instead of fleeing completely, it stopped farther up the canyon and continued watching him carefully.
Shadow remained still for several seconds before slowly reaching into his satchel and tossing a small piece of dried fruit onto the stone between them.
The fox immediately retreated another step but didn't leave. After several cautious moments, it finally crept forward just enough to snatch the food before vanishing between the rocks.
Shadow exhaled quietly.
Then distant roaring echoed somewhere deeper within the canyon.
His attention snapped up immediately.
The fox reappeared briefly farther ahead before darting into a narrow opening hidden between the canyon walls.
And without fully understanding why, Shadow followed after it.
The narrow opening led into a winding passage hidden deep within the canyon walls. Shadow moved carefully through the darkness while the fox slipped ahead with practiced familiarity, disappearing and reappearing between the twisting stone corridors.
The farther they traveled, the cooler the air became.
Then Shadow noticed the glow.
Faint blue and pale green light shimmered deeper within the passage until the tunnel eventually opened into a circular chamber hidden beneath the canyon itself.
Shadow slowed immediately.
Someone had built this place.
Smooth stone walls curved around the chamber while glowing crystals embedded throughout the structure cast soft light across ancient furniture coated in thick dust and cobwebs. A crude bed rested near one wall beside a weathered stone table covered in faded carvings almost completely hidden beneath centuries of dirt.
The entire chamber felt ancient.
Forgotten.
Yet strangely intact.
Shadow's eyes slowly scanned the room while the fox quietly limped toward the far corner of the chamber and curled against the stone wall like it had done so many times before.
This was its home.
Shadow stepped toward the stone table and brushed away part of the dust coating its surface. Intricate carvings slowly revealed themselves beneath his fingertips—sharp symbols and ancient runic patterns etched with impossible precision.
The moment mana brushed against the carvings, the chamber trembled faintly.
Then a voice echoed through his mind.
Deep.
Ancient.
Heavy enough to make the air itself feel denser.
"He who dares disturb this chamber… whether blessed by fortune or doomed by fate, I cannot say. Sealed within this stone lies a power ancient, perilous, and profound. To master it is to claim strength untold. To falter is to embrace ruin."
Shadow froze completely while the voice continued resonating through the chamber walls.
"Place your essence upon the altar. Let mana flow, and the gift shall bind itself to you. But heed this warning well—veil this power in secrecy, or the heavens themselves shall curse your name."
Silence returned almost instantly.
Shadow stared at the ancient table while his pulse slowly began to quicken.
Shadow hesitated briefly while countless possibilities ran through his mind. Trap. Ancient inheritance. Dead cultivator. Nothing about this place felt normal, but neither had the Trial World since the moment he entered it.
His eyes drifted briefly toward the fox resting silently in the corner of the chamber before returning to the altar again. If a beast as cautious as an Elite-ranked creature willingly stayed here, then whatever power lingered inside this place likely wasn't actively hostile.
At least not immediately.
Shadow exhaled slowly before placing his palm against the ancient stone.
"Strength always carries risk," he murmured quietly before releasing a steady flow of mana into the carvings.
The carvings ignited instantly.
Pale runes flared across the surface of the altar while radiant light surged through the chamber hard enough to shake dust from the ceiling. The walls hummed violently, and the air itself grew heavy as pressure crashed down against Shadow's body from every direction.
He clenched his jaw and refused to pull away.
Then the energy entered him.
Coolness swept through his veins for only a brief moment before agony exploded through his chest like a spear driven directly into his core. His muscles locked instantly while violent energy surged through his body with enough force to arch his back against the stone floor.
Shadow tried to scream, but the pain only worsened.
Then it reached his mind.
Control shattered completely.
Blood poured from his nose, ears, and eyes as his body convulsed violently across the chamber floor. Every nerve inside him felt like it was being torn apart and rebuilt at the same time while ancient mana flooded through his pathways without restraint.
The chamber echoed with raw, animalistic screams until the pressure vanished as suddenly as it had begun.
Shadow collapsed hard against the stone, barely conscious.
Consciousness returned slowly.
Shadow groaned as he rolled onto his back, every muscle in his body aching as though he had been dragged through fire and ice simultaneously. His head throbbed violently, but beneath the pain he could feel something else now.
Power.
Unfamiliar.
Alive.
He forced himself upright against the cold stone floor while energy pulsed beneath his skin in steady rhythms with every breath. Even his senses felt sharper than before. He could hear water dripping somewhere deeper inside the cavern, smell the minerals embedded within the walls, and feel faint vibrations traveling through the stone beneath him.
Something inside him had changed completely.
Shadow pressed a hand against his chest and slowly focused inward.
The moment his awareness touched his core space, he froze.
A second core floated beside his original neutral core deep within his body, radiating wild elemental energy powerful enough to distort the surrounding mana around it.
His first elemental core.
Shadow remained completely still while the new core pulsed beside his original neutral core deep within his body.
The elemental energy radiating from it felt wild and unstable compared to the calm neutrality of his natural mana. Even without fully understanding what he had inherited, Shadow could already feel the difference immediately.
His mana no longer felt empty.
It felt alive.
Carefully, he guided a thread of energy from the new core through his pathways. The response was immediate. Mana surged beneath his skin in violent pulses while unstable elemental energy gathered above his palm and condensed into a small shimmering sphere.
The orb flickered erratically between darkness, lightning, and fire before collapsing in a violent hiss that scorched his hand hard enough to make him flinch.
Shadow stared at his palm while adrenaline slowly mixed with awe inside his chest.
Dangerous.
Extremely dangerous.
But powerful.
He slowly pushed himself back to his feet while the ancient carvings across the altar dimmed into lifeless stone once more. Whatever power had remained within this chamber for centuries had now passed into him completely.
Shadow glanced around the ancient room again, this time with different eyes.
The fox still rested quietly in the corner, watching him carefully.
And somehow the chamber no longer felt abandoned.
It felt like the end of something.
Or perhaps the beginning.
