Chapter 21 - Demonic Takeover (1)

The following morning, Shadow left the cavern behind.

The decision came quietly. The Astral Core had become increasingly unstable over the past several days, and the pressure building inside him no longer felt like something he could ignore forever. The ancient spirit inside the inheritance chamber warned him what would happen if the Astral Core remained unbalanced for too long, and Shadow had already started noticing the changes spreading through his body and senses.

It was finally time to search for the remaining elemental cores before things got out of hand.

So he moved deeper into the Trial World.

The fox followed.

Not closely at first. It still kept several yards between them while they crossed the fractured canyon paths, occasionally vanishing across the cliffs before silently reappearing later like it had never left at all. But unlike before, it no longer returned to the cavern at night. Wherever Shadow stopped now, the fox lingered nearby.

The terrain changed gradually over the next few days.

Jagged ravines slowly gave way to harsher highlands covered in dark stone and sparse dead vegetation twisted by constant wind. Massive fractures stretched across the earth deep enough that faint heat drifted upward from somewhere far below, while enormous pillars of warped black rock rose across the landscape like the remains of something ancient buried beneath the Trial World long before he arrived.

Even the sky looked different here.

The violet clouds overhead churned more violently than before, occasionally flashing with pale silver lightning that produced no thunder afterward. The farther Shadow traveled, the more wrong the region began to feel.

As if it wasn't supposed to exist.

The Astral Core reacted constantly.

Sometimes pressure built suddenly beneath his ribs for no reason at all. Other times Astral Mana surged unpredictably through his circulation hard enough to sharpen his senses beyond comfort. Distant sounds became unnaturally clear. Shadows seemed to move strangely at the edges of his vision whenever exhaustion started wearing down his focus.

Then the whispers returned.

Not words.

Just faint distortions brushing across the edges of his thoughts whenever Astral Mana became too unstable.

The fox reacted every time.

Whenever the leaking mana intensified, the creature's ears flattened instinctively before it created more distance between them again.

By the fourth night, Shadow finally stopped near the edge of a massive stone basin overlooking the wasteland below. Ash drifted slowly through the cold wind while enormous skeletal remains rested half-buried throughout the region beneath layers of black dust.

This place definitely had not existed before.

Shadow sat against a fractured pillar overlooking the basin while exhaustion settled heavily through his body. Traveling through the new biome had drained him faster than expected. The mana density here felt oppressive, thick enough that even breathing carried faint pressure against his lungs.

Nearby, the fox rested beneath an overhanging slab of stone while watching the darkness below carefully.

Shadow closed his eyes briefly to steady the Astral Mana moving unevenly through his circulation.

Then agony ripped through his skull.

Astral Mana exploded violently through his body hard enough to crack the stone beneath him while fragmented images tore across his thoughts—black chains stretched endlessly through darkness, ancient symbols carved into massive stone walls, something enormous straining against restraints buried deep within him.

Then a voice hissed through his mind.

'Finally.'

The hatred behind the word made Shadow's chest tighten instinctively.

'Do you have any idea how long I've been trapped listening to your thoughts?'

The pressure inside Shadow's body intensified immediately afterward. It felt like something buried deep within him had shifted for the first time in centuries, pulling violently against invisible restraints while Astral Mana seeped through cracks weakening the seal around it.

The fox recoiled backward with a startled growl as unstable mana leaked into the air around them.

Shadow forced the Astral Core back under control before the surge could spread further. His breathing steadied slowly while the pressure inside him eased enough to think clearly again.

A cold unease settled through his chest.

The voice wasn't echoing around him.

It was coming from somewhere deeper.

The voice laughed again, low and unstable enough to make the sound feel wrong inside his own head.

'What the hell are you?' Shadow asked silently.

'The reason your life is about to become much worse.'

Shadow's jaw tightened while he pushed himself upright slowly. The fox continued watching him warily from farther away now, reacting to the unstable Astral Mana still leaking faintly into the air around him.

The voice continued before Shadow could respond.

'Centuries buried in darkness, and this is the body I awaken in? Skinny. Exhausted. Weak.'

Shadow ignored the insult and looked back toward the wasteland stretching below them instead while the Astral Core continued pulsing unevenly beneath his ribs.

'Ignore me if you want,' the voice whispered. 'You won't manage it forever.'

'Neither will you,' Shadow replied.

Silence followed briefly before the voice laughed again, softer this time but no less unhinged.

'Good. Maybe you won't bore me to death after all.'

Shadow studied the massive basin below while ash drifted slowly through the cold night air. Cracked pillars stretched endlessly across the wasteland while colossal skeletons rested half-buried beneath layers of black stone like remnants from a forgotten age.

Then the voice spoke again, quieter now.

'...Interesting.'

Shadow's eyes narrowed slightly. 'You know this place?'

The silence stretched longer this time.

Then the voice answered coldly.

'You ask too many questions for someone this weak.'

Silence settled afterward, but the pressure inside Shadow's body never fully faded. It lingered beneath his ribs like something slowly pulling against restraints buried deep within him while Astral Mana moved unevenly through his circulation.

Shadow remained near the basin's edge watching ash drift across the wasteland below. The fox still kept its distance now, golden eyes fixed warily on him whenever unstable mana leaked into the air around his body.

The voice laughed quietly inside his head.

'Look at it. Even the beast knows something is wrong with you.'

Shadow ignored him.

'Or maybe it simply smells weakness.'

A violent pulse exploded through Shadow's chest without warning.

Pain tore across his skull hard enough to force him against the fractured pillar behind him while Astral Mana surged wildly out of control. Black stone cracked beneath his feet in spiderweb fractures as pressure built rapidly inside his body.

The voice sounded pleased.

'There it is.'

Shadow tried forcing the Astral Mana back under control, but something slammed violently against his consciousness before he could stabilize it. The sensation felt invasive and crushing, like another mind forcing itself against his own through sheer brutality alone.

Then the world vanished.

Shadow stumbled across cold black stone beneath an endless crimson sky while massive chains stretched upward into darkness around him. Broken pillars floated motionless through the void like fragments of ruined structures suspended outside reality itself.

Astral Mana exploded around him instinctively.

A low laugh echoed across the darkness.

Then the creature stepped forward from between the chains.

The thing barely resembled a man.
