Chapter 161 - Chapter 153 : Reveal

Year 33, August

"Genshiro!"

A sharp, high-pitched voice followed by heavy, echoing stomps reverberated through the hallway.

"Senju Genshiro!"

Bang!

Uzumaki Mito burst through the heavy wooden doors of the Senju's indoor training ground. Inside, Senju Genshiro stood silently on the observation deck, his eyes tracking the various movements of the Senju and integrated ex-Senju clansmen running through intensive drills. He cast a brief, sidelong glance at Mito's disheveled state before returning his focus to the training floor.

Mito's eyes widened with fury as a vein pulsed violently at her temple. Her vibrant red hair, normally pinned up into her neat, signature twin buns, now hung completely loose down her shoulders and past her waist. Despite her actual age—and the brief, weathered appearance she had shown during the recent Nine-Tails crisis—she had successfully forced her body back into a youthful visage, supported by the dark purplish diamond seal resting in the center of her forehead.

Mito took a sharp, ragged breath. As she scanned the training floor, she expected the clansmen to react to her sudden, violent entrance. Instead, she met a confusing mosaic of reactions: a few flashed glances of fleeting worry, but the vast majority looked on with utter indifference, if they looked at all. A sudden, instinctual wave of dread washed over her as she realized a heavy, unnatural chill was seeping from the stones of the training facility.

"What brings an esteemed figure like yourself to a humble place like this?" Genshiro asked, his voice interrupting her racing thoughts. His words pulled her focus back, immediately reigniting the raw fury in her chest.

With Borai and Ayame having perished during the climax of the Shinobi War, Genshiro was now the sole surviving Grand Elder of the clan. It was his shadow that continued to drive Mito's thoughts and suspicions into dangerous territory.

"Am I currently standing in a place where I am forbidden to step?" Mito retorted with pure spite, her oppressive chakra starting to bleed into the air as the strands of her crimson hair began to lift and flay wildly.

"I merely insist that you rest and prioritize your recovery, Mito," Genshiro spoke gently, though Mito could easily detect the chilling contempt? no, indifference layered beneath his grandfatherly demeanor. "After all, your absolute priority should be containing the beast sealed within you. We cannot afford to let that monster run loose inside Konoha."

Mito's pupils dilated as she stepped forward. "I am more than capable of managing my own burden."

Since her chaotic return to Konoha, Uzumaki Mito had spent every hour attempting to piece her fractured health and mind back together. The severe physical backlash of the sudden Kyūbi outbreak, combined with being subjected to a Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu while she was already exhausted from treating Tobirama's mortal wounds, had left her completely bedridden for nearly half a month.

Shaking her head to clear the lingering fatigue, Mito stepped closer to Genshiro, her eyes flicking across the silent trainees before she locked eyes with the elder. "Come with me. This is not the appropriate setting for this discussion."

Genshiro remained still, his boots glued to the stone floor. "What could you possibly wish to discuss in such secrecy that our own clansmen are barred from hearing it?"

Mito stared at him, a flicker of genuine bewilderment crossing her features. The heavy accusations she was about to level at him would utterly destroy his reputation far more than hers, and she was absolutely certain that Genshiro knew exactly what she was hinting at.

"Fine, if that is how you wish to play this," Mito spat, desperately restraining her temper as she took a commanding stance. "What have you done to my son?"

Genshiro tilted his head a fraction of an inch, as his face masked with mild curiosity. "Your son?"

"Do not play the fool with me!" Mito's voice trembled, her shaking fist rising directly before Genshiro's eyes. "What have you done to Kenji?! What is the meaning of that curse seal placed in his mouth?"

Mito's chest heaved rapidly as her breathing turned shallow and erratic. Below them on the training floor, the clansmen slowly paused their katas, turning their hollow gazes up toward the balcony.

Genshiro scanned Mito's furious reaction in total, unbothered silence for a long, agonizing minute, casually stroking his mustache. Finally, he let his hand drop and casually snapped his fingers. "Ah. That." He placed both hands back over the handle of his wooden cane and looked up. "Well... that information is classified."

"Classified?!" Mito's temper finally shattered. She lunged another step forward, the air violently tearing open as three glowing, golden Adamantine Chains erupted from her back, whipping through the air with lethal intent. "You dare speak of classification before me?!"

Thump!

Genshiro violently slammed the tip of his wooden cane into the stone floor, sending a localized, shockwave of compressed chakra from the point of impact, washing over the balcony and forcefully throwing Mito back a full step.

"You should know your place, Mito," Genshiro growled. His hunched posture vanished as his eyes opened fully, revealing a pair of piercing, terrifyingly cold amber irises. "As a married member of the Senju, you are expected to be well-aware of our ancestral laws, your precise authority, and your strict jurisdiction. Since Hashirama's death—and even during the height of his active reign—you have never possessed the legal authority or political jurisdiction to question a Grand Elder."

Genshiro stepped into her space, his aura expanding until it suffocated the room. "Never forget that you are an Uzumaki before you are a Senju, Mito."

"You..." Mito stood entirely frozen, her breath caught in her throat as she was completely overwhelmed by Genshiro's sudden, monstrous surge of chakra.

For an old man on the winter edge of his life to retain an aura of this magnitude was staggering; she couldn't even fathom the power he must have wielded during his physical prime. Yet, beneath her shock, a deep confusion began to take root. Throughout her decades living within the Senju compound as the wife of the First Hokage, Genshiro had never been known as a combat specialist or a powerhouse within the clan ranks.

"You sneaky, deceitful bastard," Mito hissed, her eyes narrowing as the pieces began to align. "Were you masking your true strength all these years? Were you simply biding your time, waiting for Hashirama and Tobirama to finally die? For what? To greedily seize a scrap of power and authority at the very end of your twilight?"

Mito took a quick, panicked glance around the room, hoping to find a shred of shock or outrage among the audience. To her absolute horror, every single clansman within the training ground remained completely indifferent to the revelation. Expanding her sensory perception, she attempted to read their emotions—only to find that they were entirely monotonous, hollow, and drained of individuality.

They felt exactly like her son, Kenji. Only a tiny handful of the younger children present held a faint, natural spark of genuine human emotion.

"What on earth..." Mito whispered, taking a staggered step away from the balcony railing. 'How did I never notice this before? Wait... isn't that girl a civilian merchant who integrated into the village just a year ago? And that man over there runs an Udon stall in the commercial district... All of these people... they are supposed to be ordinary civilians... how are they wielding chakra like this?'

"You are correct that I... no, that we have been waiting in silence until Hashirama passed away," Genshiro's hollow and monotonous voice echoed directly behind her ear, sending a shiver of terror down her spine.

Mito bolted away from him, her instincts screaming that the man before her was a lethal anomaly. When she tried to read his emotion, she could sense nothing; zero malice, zero anger, and zero human emotion radiating from his body—an absolute void that chilled her far more than an outburst of rage ever could.

"But you are fundamentally wrong about one critical thing, Mito," Genshiro stated flatly.

"Wrong?" Mito questioned, keeping her golden chains raised defensively between them. "About what?"

"We have absolutely no interest in seizing power or authority. How could we possibly covet something that we have already possess?" Genshiro looked down, slowly clenching his weathered hand into a tight, trembling fist before raising his head to lock his amber gaze onto hers. "We are the true bedrock of the Senju clan, Mito. We do not exist for politics. We exist solely for the Mission."

"The Mission?" Mito repeated, her voice barely a whisper.

"Tell me, Mito," Genshiro mused, his voice dropping into a tone of unsettlingly lighthearted banter. "How do you think a major clan like the Senju managed to survive for over a thousand years without ever once tearing itself apart in a civil war?"

"That's because—"
