Chapter 61 - New Government, Rajiv Gandhi Death

**November 1989 – June 1990**

Thanks to all supporters for the UPI contributions—your encouragement keeps the story growing.

Guys timeline is messed somewhat but bear this for few chapter. This happening becuase i am going in fast mode recently and forgot to add crucial details.

**September–October 1990**: Advani's Rath Yatra rolled from Somnath to Ayodhya. Communal tension soared. BJP demanded Singh stop Mandal Commission implementation (OBC reservations).

V.P. Singh refused. BJP withdrew support on November 9, 1990.

The government fell.

**November 10, 1990**: Raj called Arjun Das and Suraj. "Now. Withdraw BP support publicly. TBF front page tomorrow: 'BP Stands for Stability and Progress—Cannot Support Chaos.'"

TBF headline the next day: "BP Withdraws Support—Time for Responsible Governance."

Chaos ensued. Chandra Shekhar formed a short-lived government with Congress backing (November 10, 1990 – March 1991), but it was doomed.

**March 1991**: Chandra Shekhar resigned. President's Rule briefly imposed.

Rajiv Gandhi, desperate to return, reached out through intermediaries.

Raj met Rajiv in a secure Delhi safehouse (April 1991).

Rajiv, tired but sharp: "Raj Mehra... you hold the keys. Name your price."

Raj's terms:

- External support for Congress-led government.

- Home and Rural Development Ministries for BP nominees.

- Religious sites protection bill passed immediately.

- Bofors probe continued but contained (no direct damage to Rajiv).

- National rollout of UFT model under Rural Ministry.

Rajiv agreed. By late April 1991, Congress formed government with BP external support. Rajiv Gandhi was sworn in as PM again.

**Rajiv Gandhi's Second Term (April 1991 – onward)**

Rajiv, chastened by Bofors and survival of the crisis, moved cautiously. Reforms began: partial devaluation, import liberalization—but slower than real history (BP rural lobby resisted aggressive privatization).

UFT scaled nationally (500 villages by end-1991). Luxmi rural branches grew. Mehra Construction got highway tenders.

On December 15, 1991, Rajiv Gandhi addressed a public rally in Chennai—not for any election (the next Lok Sabha was years away), but to rally Congress workers and explain economic reforms amid rising prices. The venue was Marina Beach, thousands gathered under the winter sun, waving flags and cheering as Rajiv spoke of "a new India rising from crisis."

Raj Mehra, in Mumbai, watched the live TBF broadcast with Priya and Jyoti. Two-year-old Riya played nearby; Jyoti's second child (3 months old) a son Aryan slept in the nursery.

When Jyoti gave birth Raj gave this news to her father when he saw Jyoti with a child in her hand he was shocked and earth beneath his legs falls.

Raj then implanted Loyalty chip in him and then he accepted Raj and Jyoti relation.

On other hand

The rally was peaceful—until it wasn't.

A suicide bomber from LTTE, who had slipped through despite ASUR's efforts in Tamil Nadu, detonated herself near the stage. The blast killed Rajiv Gandhi instantly, along with 14 others. Dozens were injured.

The nation froze.

TBF cut to black for a moment, then Ravi Sharma's voice, grave: "The Prime Minister is no more. India has lost its leader once again."

Riots did not erupt immediately—ASUR and BP state governments in Maharashtra and Rajasthan acted fast, deploying forces to contain tension. But the shock was profound.

In the Mehra villa, Priya clutched Riya, tears streaming. Jyoti whispered, "Again... how?"

Raj stood motionless, staring at the screen. He had known the LTTE threat lingered—Rajiv's Sri Lanka policy had made him their target since 1987. ASUR had neutralized several plots in Tamil Nadu, but this one slipped through.

Raj turned to Arjun Das, who had rushed in. "Report."

Arjun: "Boss, the bomber was LTTE—female, trained in Jaffna. We had intel on three cells; we took down two. This one went dark. She infiltrated as a Congress worker. The rally was not election-related—just a public support gathering to explain reforms."

Raj's voice was steel. "Find the handlers. End them. And make sure no retaliation riots start. Use every operative in Tamil Nadu."

The funeral was held on December 20—state mourning declared. Sonia Gandhi refused politics; P.V. Narasimha Rao became acting PM, with BP's continued support to avoid collapse.

Immediate Aftermath

No sympathy wave for elections (none were due)—Congress government survived under Rao, but weaker.

Reforms continued but more slowly—BP rural lobby forced greater safeguards for farmers.

Communal tension rose (Rath Yatra momentum)

**Rath Yatra Aftermath & Communal Tension**

Advani's 1990 Rath Yatra had already inflamed passions. The movement continued. VHP and kar sevaks gathered in Ayodhya throughout 1991.

Raj watched. He could stop the demolition (ASUR ready), but chose not to.
