Chapter 69 - Town of Birds

After Syla's carriage had left the cliff crevice, the shining light rays that came from the sun momentarily blinded her from seeing the outside world, and when her vision returned, Syla was met with the other side of the cliffs, unlike what she saw at the other side, this side of the cliffs was filled with moss and vines that stretched to the top of the cliffs, anyone would be able to climb over the vines if they weren't too heavy.

Syla also noticed a few rusty swords that was placed on the ground right beside the cliff walls, she immediately knew that it was the bandit's doing, they had been camping over this cliffs to rob any passerby that unfortunately came, those rusty swords were their spare weapons incase if there were a huge battle.

'Does that mean there's a basecamp full of bandits nearby? Or are they the resident of a town?– There's a chance that they might be from Beakwood, if that's true then i can't really trust the people living there.' Syla thought.

While she was observing the untouched beauty of the cliffs and the intricate rock formations that were embedded in its walls, Syla suddenly Paroug's voice talking over the thin fabric of the carriage.

"Hey, we are almost there!" He said.

Curious with what he meant by that, Syla then peeked over the small window and instantly noticed the roof of a tall tower in the distance, although it was obstructed by the hill in the distance, Syla was sure that it was the roof of a cobblestone tower.

"We're almost at Beakwood." Syla said to Errick and his friends.

"Really?" Errick and Yveia soon looked from the back of the carriage and they also saw the top of the cobblestone tower in the horizon. "That's a the magic tower in Beakwood!"

"Magic tower?." Syla replied. "Im surprised Beakwood have a magic tower, i read its usually only found in cities."

"Sometimes towns can also have them, but as you might have guessed, its pretty rare.. Beakwood is one of the few towns that have its own magic tower, this is your first visit to Beakwood right? The magic tower there belong to the Wind Faction." Errick explained.

A minute later, the carriage eventually passed the hill that previously blocked the town's view, and after they reached the peak of the hill, Syla could feel the carriage began to move downhill, she decided to peek at the small window again and this time, she could see the town of Beakwood in its entirety, the cobblestone walls that were similar with the ones in Direwell, the series of houses and buildings that were lining up to make up with the road, and the inscopicuous tall buildings that towers the rest of the houses beside it.

Except for the magic tower, none of the buildings in the town have more than three floors in it, the magic tower was clearly the tallest structure in there and Syla tried to guess its height as a way to spend time.

'30 Meters?.. Or 50 perhaps?..' She thought, purely guessing the height of the building without any calculation whatsoever.

'It's tall for sure— So that's a magic tower.. I've seen them in books before but they're taller than i expected.. A building where it's controlled by powerful mages who conduct magic experiments and create artifacts.' Syla remembered the contents of the book she read a few years ago.

"Yveai, How's Jule? Is he still stable?" Errick asked to Yveai who was sitting beside the sleeping Jule.

She checked for his breathing and confirmed that it's still stable, he didn't show any sign of waking up or feeling in pain, so they all just assumed he was fine.

"He's still breathing normally." Yveia calmly responded.

"I see, that's good to hear.. We're so close." Errick said as he clenched his fist.

20 Minutes later—

The carriage finally arrived at the straight path that leads to Beakwood, Syla was already feeling impatient and couldn't wait to explore the town, however she remembered that she had to pass the gate first.

'I should be fine if i just show them my adventurer plate right?' She thought while touching the necklace on her neck.

Syla didn't expect to spend 20 minutes after seeing the town in the distance, she thought at that time that it will only take a few minutes to reach Beaktown, but she couldn't be anymore wrong.

Errick and the others began to prepare for their arrival, they checked everything to see if they had left anything or not, and when they were sure that they've brought everything that they own, they waited while watching over Jule.

When it was the turn for their carriage to be checked, Syla and the mercenaries had to come down and met with the gate guards, Syla saw the guards and realized that they wore a similar armour with the ones in Direwell, it seems like guards in towns doesn't always have their own signature armor or atleast logo that could differentiate where they came from.

"You over there, take off your cloak, not just your hood." One of the guard said.

Syla hesitated for a moment, but if she doesn't obliged to their order, she will be seen as suspicious, in the end, Syla slowly took of the cloak that was covering her from head to toe and flipped it neatly before holding it with her hand, everyone around her quickly saw Syla's entire appearance, especially Errick, who was with Syla this entire journey, finally saw her full body after only seeing her face.

The fancy white ruffled blouse and the black skirt along with the pantyhose was enough to steal everyone's gaze, her tail occassionally swings around beneath her skirt, despite the attention she was getting, Syla had already gotten used to it, after she turned 14 years old, Syla had always been stared at by the people in Demiria, even if she wore a casual fit that shouldn't attract any attention, people would still stare at her just to see her face, that's how beautiful Syla was compared to the others in her town, and after experiencing it every day, Syla decided to get used to it instead of whining about it every few seconds.

"Is this enough?" Syla walked closer to the guards and showed them her adventurer's plate that was hidden beneath her blouse.

As soon as the guards saw the gold plate and the Widewent Kingdom logo, they instantly shivered out of fear, it seems like they didn't expect Syla to be an A-Rank adventurer, and when they realized how strong she was, they didn't want to play anymore games with her.

"Y- you're an A-Rank adventurer!?" One of the guard was shocked.

"Y- you can enter..." The other guard beside him then moved to the side to give Syla a way into the town.

"Thank you." Syla thanked them before equipping her cloak again.

She then looked at Errick, she could tell that he was allured by her beauty, but he tried his hardest to not show it. After Errick and the rest of his friends were checked, they paid the entrance fees, Errick had to get paid by Anther for his entrance fee since it turns out he only had 2 coppers in his possession, while the town's fee was 4 coppers.

"Im sorry for the trouble haha.." Errick said to the guards before entering the town.

"What kind of a mercenary are you, to be this broke.." The guard sighed at Errick before ignoring them.

Once everyone went through the gate, they finally arrived at Beakwood, the town where the sound of birds endlessly echoed throughout the day.

"So this is Beakwood.." Syla said, admiring the architectural beauty infront of her.

"This means my job here is done, right?" Paroug called from behind while still riding his carriage.

Syla looked back to see Paroug and smiled, she was grateful for his service.

"Thank you once again, Sir. Paroug." Syla then slightly bowed, she respected Paroug who was already old yet still had his spirits completely full.

"Don't mind it, i only do what i get paid for." Paroug replied. "Then, let us meet again someday, i'll stay in this town for a few more days before leaving, if you'd like to go back to Direwell, don't be shy to search for me."

"I'll be sure to remember it, thank you." Syla responded before seeing Paroug and his carriage moving away from her.

While the carriage was moving, Syla also saw Errick and the mercenaries on the other side of the street, it seems like they're in a hurry, but Syla didn't mind it. She knew they had a friend that needed immediate help, so she decided not to bother and left them alone.

"Well, now what do i do.." Syla said as she glanced at the buildings around her.
