Next day—
At the adventurer's guild, Syla was seen entering the building through the front door, unlike before, this time she wore something more casual, a simple bland tunic with long saggy pants, it's similar to how she dressed back in Demiria, although these kinds of fit was preferably worn by males, Syla didn't really care about it, after all she was once a man too.
Syla weaved through the main hall that was being filled with adventurers, ignoring the stares that was coming from every direction before arriving at one of the receptionist desk.
"Hello." She said to the receptionist infront of her, whom she had known recently.
"Ah, Miss Syla? You're right on time." The receptionist replied with a smile, it was Nomi all along, the two of them greeted each other before Nomi lowered her head down to see under her desk.
She grabbed something from there and then placed it ontop of her desk, it was a case made out of wood and dyed in white.
"Here's your plate." Nomi said as she opened the wooden casing, revealing a necklace that was connected through a gold rectangle with the kingdom's Symbol and the letter A while also placed within a black cushions.
"Woah.." Syla was amazed at the quality of the necklace, its leash was made out of tiny iron in the shape of a crystal while the gold plate itself reflected lights as if it was made out of glass. "It looks cool..."
"Well, you're an A-Rank adventurer after all, this much is expected when dealing with someone as strong as yourself." Nomi said, she pulled the necklace out of the wooden case and stretched her hand to give it to Syla. "Please wear it."
Syla accepted the necklace as soon as possible and she wore it over her neck, the gold plate itself was hidden beneath her tunic, making it convenient for her since Syla didn't want to reveal her adventurer rank to everyone around her, that'd only invite more troubles.
"It looks beautiful, thank you." Syla said, a faint smile formed on her lips as she stared at her new accessory.
"And here's your card ID, the guildmaster completed it sooner than expected, well it was to he expected since you're the only new A-Rank adventurer here." Nomi said before she ducked under her desk again.
In the end, Syla received both her adventurer's plate and her adventurer's ID, similar to her adventurer's plate, her card ID was also made out of steel, the 1cm thick card had almost every information about her that she wrote in the questionnaire from yesterday, it'd be useful if Syla wants to identify herself to others.
After she got everything that was needed to be an adventurer, Syla then went to the quest board, she was planning to take a quest after her money was reduced to a mere 2 silvers.
"Let's see.." Syla whispered as she observed all of the papers that was embedded into the board.
'Im not going to stay in this town for long anyway, so i should get a quest that rewards the most, for example—' Syla thought, her eyes moved from side to side, looking at each quests and their difficulty.
Every quests in the quest board was required to put the difficulty at the very top of the frame, since these quests mostly come from other people in the town, they sometimes forget to write the difficulty of their requests, and in the past, many adventurers have become a victim of a quest that promised a lot of rewards yet lacks any information regarding what they're dealing with, the strength/difficulty recommended to take the quest, and additional informations that may be crucial for their problems such as bringing atleast a mage in order to kill monsters that are resilient to physical attacks.
Because of it, adventurer's guild began to put a set of rules when trying to put a request on the quest board, ensuring that there will be less adventurers that fell victim because of the lack of information.
While low rank quests demands less effort and rewards such as gathering ingredients/materials or killing invasive creatures like slimes, high ranking quests, typically between D and C will be filled with monster extermination, with gold coins as the rewards.
After looking through the quest board for atleast 3 minutes, Syla ended up picking a B-Rank quest that was embedded on the far right of the board.
"—Exterminate a group of mandrakes along with its queen that have taken over the farms in Hayville, recommended to bring a mage and something that cover your ears.. Reward, 15 Golds!?!" Syla's jaw almost dropped to the floor after seeing the reward, she had never seen anyone that has owned 15 golds before, atleast in her village.
"A mandrake huh.. That'd be quite bothersome.."
'They're a type of parasitic monsters, although their appearance might look weak, with their average height being 15cm tall, mandrakes are known to be hard to deal with, they ate crops and vegetables, stripping them to only their roots so that they can connect their body to it and absorb nutrients from the soil.. The book i read a few years ago said that whenever mandrakes have settled, they will turn the land around them into nothing but dusts, leaving a trail of dried soil and dead plants as they moved towards the next fertile spot.' Syla remembered the contents from the book she read as a child.
"This is interesting, im curious with mandrakes anyway, i read they can let out a deafening shrieks when threatened– Although this sounded like a lot of effort, thankfully i know how to get rid of them without having to hear their shrieks." Syla said as she pulled the paper from the board and walked towards Nomi.
"Is this the quest you're gonna take?" Nomi said, she looked into the quest paper and realized that it was a mandrake extermination quest. "Umm, Syla- are you sure to take this one? Do you know what mandrakes do?"
"Yes, they're a parasite monster right?" Syla replied, she still doesn't want to change her mind.
"Yes, and in here it says that it is recommended to bring something that covers your ears, since you're a demihuman, it'd be difficulty to fully cover your ears, and you have better hearings than humans do.. Mandrakes can let out an ear-deafening shriek when they're threatened, it'll be a disadvantage if you take this quest, even though you're strong." Nomi explained, she was concerned with Syla, because she knew that even if Syla was an A-Rank adventurer, losing her hearing would be fatal for her if she ever made a mistake in this quest.
"Hmm, i understand why you're concerned, but i know how to deal with them, that's why i took this quest, trust me." Syla said confidently.
Nomi couldn't push any further since Syla herself had already knew the risk and decided to continue, as a receptionist, she was already used to stubborn people, not to mention that her contract as a receptionist specifically said that she was only allowed to explain the risk and dangers and not forcefully stop adventurers from cancelling their quest, once she explained the risk it carries on a quest and the adventurer still accepted it, then her responsibility would be over, all she could do is to accept the quest and pray that nothing would happen to the adventurer.
"If you say so.." Nomi said before she opened a drawer under her desk and searched for a rolled paper. "Here's the map that will lead you to Hayville, it's not far from Direwell, i'd say it will only take you about an hour with carriage."
Nomi then stamped the quest as accepted and gave the map to Syla, she wished for Syla's success as she saw her walking towards the exit door.
