Chapter 43 - Cover Up

Syla had to stop in the middle of her walk and think of a plan to get out without being seen.

'Should i use the backdoor? They have one right?.. Argh! Maybe this is why its a bad idea to prioritize beauty over practicality..' Syla whined in her mind.

When she ran out of ideas to possibly leave the building secretly, Syla heard a footstep from behind, turning her head to see who it was, Syla was relieved when she saw Nomi coming out of the door that leads to the smithing room.

"Miss Syla?" Nomi said, confused as to why Syla hadn't left the building yet.

"Ah, Nomi.. Perfect timing, can i ask something?" Syla approached Nomi with a smile.

"Hmm?" Nomi waited for Syla's question, however when she saw that her clothings were a mess, she guessed Syla's problem before she could talk.

"Is this about your clothes?" Nomi asked.

Syla immediately widened her eyes upon hearing Nomi's words, she was glad that Nomi understood her problem sooner than she expected.

"That's right, i can't go out like this, umm.. You know, so– Uhh, I was wondering if, perhaps you could lend some help.." Syla said, she definitely felt a bit embarassed when asking for Nomi's help.

"Well.. Im sorry, but im not allowed to leave the guild until break time– Maybe the guildmaster have a solution to this, want me to ask him?" Nomi replied.

"Really? That'd be appreciated." Syla let out a sigh of relief, and soon after, Nomi then went back to the smithing room to talk with Malgrave.

.

.

3 Minutes later—

"Syla, i heard about your problem."

While Syla was waiting at the same spot from before, she heard a voice calling her from the side, that voice was familiar and as she had expected, it came from the guildmaster, Malgrave.

He walked along with Nomi and stopped infront of Syla.

"Guildmaster.. Uhh, sorry to bother you with this.." Syla apologized to Malgrave as she scratched her cheek.

"Hm? Aye, no need to apologize, it's my fault that i didn't think of it.. You know we have many womens out there with revealing outfits walking shamelessly everyday, so we've just grown used to it– I never thought i'll see someone with their dignity still attached, maybe the world is healing– I'll give you a cloak to cover yourself, how about that?" Malgrave said with a smile, his voice was gentle, unlike before where it was rough and intimidating.

"T- Thank you! Guildmaster!" Syla happily said, she thanked Malgrave for his generosity and shook his right hand.

"Hah, no need to thank me, wait here, i'll be back in a minute." Malgrave then walked away from Syla, he seems to be heading towards the main hall, but instead of turning, he instead goes straight and went into the other side of the building, if the hall way where Syla was standing was the left side of the adventurer's guild, and the main hall was the middle, then Malgrave just went to the right side of the building.

"— Then, i'll be going back to the main hall.. If you need anything, don't be afraid to ask the guildmaster, despite his looks, he's actually a kind man." Nomi said after noticing the awkward silence after Malgrave left, she walked out of the hallway and turned towards the main hall where she continues her work as a receptionist.

Another 5 Minutes passed, the sun was getting higher and higher in the sky as Syla waited for Malgrave's return, the heat was starting to seep into her skin from the window, signaling that the morning was almost over.

Then, while she was staring into the sky and seeing the flock of birds flying above her, Syla was startled by a footstep sound that was coming closer, she wasn't focusing at that time and by the time she realized the footstep noise, Malgrave had already arrived infront of her.

"Here's the cloak, sorry if it took longer than you expected, i forgot where i placed it.." Malgrave said as he gave Syla the cloak while also scratching the back of his head.

"Y- yeah, thank you.." Syla said, she stretched both of her hands in the opposite direction to see the entirety of the cloak, she realized that it was quite oversized, but paid no mind to it.

"It's my old cloak from when i was still an adventurer, 12 years ago." Malgrave said, he assumed that Syla would be curious about it so he decided to talk about it.

After Syla was done with inspecting the cloak, she wore it over her shoulder and covered her entire body within the cloak, even though the cloak was oversized, Syla still felt comfortable wearing it, when she tucked the hood over her head, it covered both of her eyes, making her face impossible to be seen from the outside.

"It's good, thank you again, guildmaster!" Syla said as she pulled the hood down to see Malgrave.

"It's fine it's fine, i told you no need to thank me, now if you may excuse myself, i have other things to do.. Come back to the guild tomorrow and talk to Nomi to receive your plate and card ID." Malgrave said before leaving Syla by herself and entered his room.

"— Okay?" Syla replied.

Since there's no one else to talk to, and the fact that Syla also had nothing else to do in the building anymore, she decided to leave. Syla arrived at the main hall of the building, the place where adventurers gathered, and saw that there was even more adventurers than before, some of them was alone, some had a group of their adventurer's friend, some were recruiting people to join their group, some drank beers early in the morning, and some were observing, as if looking for someone that caught their attention.

As Syla traversed among the crowded space, she could feel a few gaze being directed at her, similar to when she was at the beginning when she first entered the guild, then after a bit of navigating, Syla was about to go outside when suddenly, she was stopped by a hand infront of her.

"Hello." A man voice was heard beside Syla. "Do you have a party yet?" He said.

Syla who was wearing her hood couldn't exactly see the man face, however from his voice alone, Syla assumed that the man would probably be around in his 20's, quite similar to Gauss, Syla saw the man's legs being covered in steel armor, she also saw another pair of legs beside him which didn't have any armor on, the other leg's skin was quite smooth and slim, similar to a woman's leg.

"Im not interested." Syla said, startling the guy in armor as he didn't expect the person beneath the hood to be a girl.

"Ahh, i see– But incase if you need a party, we are recruiting, my name is Agnerod and this is my mage, Rebecca, and we're both C-Rank, how about that? Did you change your mind?" Agnerod said while introducing the girl beside him, trying his hardest to convince Syla to join his party.

Agnerod and Rebecca was an average adventurer, they've been together for a long time and had recently been promoted to C-Rank, they were recruiting because they realized that C-Rank quests was way harder than what they had expected, so they need more people to ensure their safety.

"I prefer doing things on my own for now, i appreciate the offer though." Syla replied without looking at Agnerod nor Rebecca and just left like that.

"— Damnit, i thought it'd be easy to recruit her since she's a girl, but i guess luck isn't on our side this time." Agnerod said as he saw Syla leaving the guild while getting further and further away from him, he pushed his dark red hair to the back along with his hand, showing a bit of frustration in his face.

"It's still early to give up, let's look for a few more minutes and after that, we'll take a quest." Rebecca responded, she calmed Agnerod down and they soon forgot about Syla.
