Chapter 21 - Practice With Dad

At dinner—

"Is today another boar meat, we've been eating that since 3 days ago.. Is there anything else?" Syla's dad asked to her mother. Complaining about the lack of variety in his food over the past few days.

"If you want to eat something different, then go catch something that isn't a forest boar, you know our food mostly comes from what you hunted, maybe it's time for you to catch a rogue goblin or something, who knows if that thing's tasty." Her mother replied with mocking tone.

Her dad's mouth quickly got shut before he could argue back because everything her mother just said was true.

"We- well, that is.. Couldn't you atleast buy something? Some of our neighbors surely ran a shop right?" Her dad responded, finding another possible way of obtaining different food ingredients to her mother.

"The least we can do is bartering, you know this village doesn't use the kingdom's currency that often, so most people doesn't really care about those coins." Syla's mother continued to give a logical argument to her father, in the end he gave up and accepted the food infront of him.

Syla on the other hand kept quiet about the whole thing, she finds the scene hilarious as she sees her parents acting like a true couple, knowing that their words were nothing but a joke that was needed to start a conversation.

As the three of them ate the food on the table, Syla's father suddenly stopped eating and looked at her, a smirk slowly formed on his lips.

"Syla, do you want to practice with me tomorrow? Raywen said his mother fell ill, so we'll come back earlier than usual. You know, Raywen the captain of the hunting squad." He said casually.

Syla's ears perked up upon hearing her father's words.

"Really!? You'll pratice with me?" She said cheerfully, her tail swayed aggressively, showing her excitement to her parents.

"Yeah, but just to tell you, i won't go easy on you, you better be prepared." Her dad replied, still keeping the cheeky smile on his face.

"Heh, i'll show you how much i've improved." Syla responded back with another smirk, the rivalry between her and her father was burning hot, her mother couldn't help but chuckle at their bond.

The rest of the night went smoothly as Syla prepares to go to sleep and wake up for tomorrow's practice.

Tomorrow, 12:00PM—

Syla was waiting inside her house with a book in her hand, the book titled 'Adventurer's Manual Book' was something that her father bought for her at the human town a year ago, it was a bit cheaper than normal books, costing around only 2 gold coins, but that also means the book wasn't as thick as the normal book Syla usually read. The book itself contained informations mostly about adventuring such as how to create fire without magic, identifying drinkable water, and some illustrations of fruits that are edible and non-edible, along with that, on the first page of the book, it was explained that Adventurer's who are registered within the Adventurer's Guild have a set of ranking that determines how capable they are.

'Mhm, i've pretty much read everything in this book, but there's nothing wrong re-reading it all again since many of the informations in here are quite important once i venture out to the wild—

'The adventure ranking system is the same as i expected, it's basically the same with the stories on earth– You start at the lowest F-Rank and work your way up by completing quests and showing your worth, with each rank up having its own test like an exam to see if you're really worthy of leveling up—

'In here, it says that the highest rank is S, described as someone that is widely recognized as the hero of a nation or someone extremely powerful to the point that the laws couldn't be used against them.'

Syla continued reading, coming across the monster section after flipping a few pages, in there, the description of some monsters that can be found in most places are written with illustrations. The most common monsters that are also known to be impossible to be extinct are rogue goblins, different from the normal goblins that have evolved to integrate themselves into society, rogue goblins still carries their animalistic instinct and intelligence, making them hostile to anything. The reason they were called un-extinctable was because their population can grow at an extremely fast rate.

Despite them being at the bottom of the food chain, being a food for many predators and other monsters, rogue goblins managed to keep their numbers unchanged for the past hundred of years.

'That's why many adventurer's usually kill them on the spot when they saw one, it says here. It is said that rogue goblins were responsible for many species survival, as they often get devoured a lot, keeping the ecosystem alive and balanced.'

While Syla was reading the next paragraph, she heard a heavy footstep outside that seems to be getting closer to her house. Soon, the front door was knocked.

Knock knock.

Syla jumped down from the couch and opened the door, when she saw the person that was waiting for her at the other side of the door, she smiled and welcomed him. It was her dad.

"I'm home!" He said playfully.

"Welcome home dad!" Syla replied with the same energy.

"You're ready for our practice?" Her dad walked inside, taking off his sword and his other equipment such as the leather satchel, chestplate, and small knives.

"Yeah!" Syla responded as she followed her dad.

"Wait for me at the back, i'll change my clothes first." Her dad said while getting inside his bedroom.

"Alright!" Syla quickly went to the back of her house, she waited outside just like her dad told her, the sun was shining brightly as the clouds was being scattered everywhere.

She looked up to see the clouds moving faster than normal, it was slowly forming into one giant cloud.

'It'll rain tonight..' She said to herself.

As she waited, the sound of cicadas and other insects was filling her ears nonstop, the forest was loud that day, it made Syla realized that summer was coming.

"Will i be okay? Training while the sun is this hot–

When Syla was in the middle of talking, her dad appeared behind her, he had changed into his casual outfit with short sleeves and short pants, he brought two wooden swords in his hands, one for each of them.

"Wahh, it's hot right.. That's how you know summer is here." Her dad said while looking up and covering shading his eyes with his hand. "Come on, i'll teach you how to fight properly, it's been a while since we trained together, i hope you're not just playing around when im not here right?"

"Heh, you don't know how hard i trained everyday." Syla replied as she held her sword in a stance.

"300 swings per day was it? That's a bit too low– Follow my movement, after that we'll spar." Her dad began to swing his sword in various position and movement, his hands looked like a rubber that can be stretched to wherever he wanted.

"Ugh, are you serious? Any more than that and my arms will break you know, im a girl– Give me a rest." Syla responded while following the movement that was shown by her father, however it was clear that she struggled to follow some of the techniques as her arms wasn't as flexible as her dad.

"Haha, sorry Syla– It's just that i want you to be as prepared as possible. You said that you want to be a wanderer right? Then, you'll need to be able to defend yourself. Using magic alone wouldn't be enough, im sure you know that already, because you're that smart after all– I called this one Crossed Slash Attack!" Her dad talked for quite a bit, his slashes are still in perfect motion, and after saying the name of the move, he swung his sword in an X pattern before ending it with one final horizontal swing.

The whole attack was so fast that Syla almost couldn't keep up with it, she slowed down significantly after trying to replicate the attack.

"That was too hard!!" She complained.

"Ahahahaha!! I guess you still have a long way to go!" Her dad laughed, he then stopped and looked at her daughter's hand, it was stiff. "We'll do an easier one, you can continue?"

"Yes.." Syla's eyes was full of determination, her dad who saw it couldn't help but smile.
