Chapter 52: Study of Magical Beasts (1)
Professor Lea Gilligan had on a shirt that was snug to her body but afforded enough room for her large breasts even if they were still laid bare enough to showcase an ample amount of cleavage.
Past her shirt, she had on about two belts with large buckles and a couple of utility pouches strapped on. Considering the existence of storage items, it felt like the pouches weren't really needed for storage and she was going for a specific look. Whatever that look was, it definitely worked.
The belts held up a sleek pair of black pants that showed off the shape of her thighs and the round arch of her ass. She wore knee-high boots that gave her about an additional two inches in height, but ultimately, they seemed to be more about functionality than fashion. They looked best for hikes and traversing the terrain of a forest, as taller heels might not allow.
The sleeves of her shirt were rolled up to show off her incredible arms, which were a perfect balance of strength and grace. Her hands were encased in fingerless gloves, which added to the look she was going for.
Her hair was long and fell to her shoulders in thick and disorderly locks like she never really had the time to attempt straightening it. Her face was beautiful and bore a resemblance to someone the entire class had met twice already if you count Orientation. It was another teacher at the Academy who also shared Lea Gilligan's last name.
With that in mind, a couple of hands instantly shot up.
"Questions already?" Professor Gilligan let out but she didn't look all that surprised as she pointed at a boy who Caius knew was named Marcus Arognite.
"Yes?" Lea Gilligan asked with a piercing look in her feline blue eyes.
"Did you say 'Gilligan' Professor?" Marcus asked.
"Yes, I did."
"Are you perhaps related to Professor Anne Gilligan?" Marcus asked already dreading the answer.
"Yes, I am," Lea said, "She's my Mom."
"Oh," Marcus said in a small voice and seemed to shrink a bit. It seemed the experience of being shamed by Anne Gilligan during Magi History class yesterday was still very fresh on his mind.
"Oh, you poor thing," Lea said and she sounded genuinely compassionate, "Mom shamed you, didn't she?"
Marcus gave a small nod.
Lea sighed.
"Yes, she can be like that. But rest assured I'm not like her. Here you have nothing to worry about. Failure is only a part of the learning process. We'll get over any hump by just keeping a positive attitude and keeping at it."
She sounded so chirpy as she gave that speech that Marcus truly brightened up and smiled at her. Caius' lips just pulled up at the corners as he smiled in knowing amusement.
Now that Lea Gilligan had admitted to her relationship with Professor Anne Gilligan, everyone began to take note of the similarities in their appearances.
There was the chest size that everyone already felt she must have inherited from her mother who was still beating her out by a few cup sizes.
Lea's eyes were feline-blue unlike her mother's black and her hair was not as cared-for as her mother's was. Besides that though, her face was almost an exact copy.
The major difference was that Lea's face was obviously younger and also, she had a wildness about her that did not quite match the composed and professional air that her mother had given off for most of her lecture yesterday.
"Now, Magical Beasts," Professor Lea said and clapped her hands together, the motion doing wonders to her breasts,
"I've spent years of my life in study of them. Not to brag but long before I began to lecture at Lochxen, I traveled the world, discovering the undiscovered and adding to the already ample Adventurer's Guild Bestiary. It's how I still spend the holiday season.
So trust me when I tell you this (gestures at the field and specifically at the Forest a few feet away) is how you'll learn.
The Curriculum would have you sitting in your classroom reading about Magical beasts but I say, screw that. Nay, Fuck that! You can't learn if you can't even bring yourself this close to their habitat. You learn by interacting with them which is what we will be doing.
Every week, it'll be a different beast. You'll learn about their feeding habits, their preferred habitats, their elemental affinities—if they have any—and how to survive if you were about to face off against them."
"Just survival, Professor?" Caius suddenly asked out loud, "What about Taming?"
It wasn't that he didn't already know the answer to that question. It just never hurts to be engaging in a class being taught by a Professor you find attractive.
It surprised him though when Professor Lea Gilligan gave him a look. It looked amused in a way he wasn't sure how to take.
"Depends on what you mean by taming. Do you mean domestication or do you mean forging a contract between Man and Beast?"
Caius was so taken aback by that look she was giving him that he stammered a bit.
"T—The second one."
Domestication was only possible with some beasts and it wasn't a strong enough connection to truly claim to have acquired the loyalty of a Beast. If there was anything worth knowing, it was about actual 'Taming'.
Lea placed a finger to her chin and looked to mull it over a bit before she answered,
"'Taming' is a very specific talent. Like many unique elements that you lot possess because of the families you belong to, it's also not something everyone can do. You either have the yielding heart to accommodate a contract or you don't."
"Oh you mean it's a specific talent like Summoning, Professor?" Aylin Khione asked in a sweet voice for probably the first time she had chosen to engage so vocally in class.
Professor Lea Gilligan shrugged.
"I suppose you could say that. But Summoning is an even more niche practice. And a potentially more dangerous one. It deals with reaching into the 'Otherworld' to contract unseen spirits and forces that are alien to ours.
'Taming' is more concrete. It deals with creatures you can see. Creatures you can have spent time studying. You know exactly what you're getting if you're trying to tame. With 'Summoning', it can be less precise and you never know what you're gonna get."
"Can you tame, Professor?" Aylin asked. It was like she could detect the bias in Lea's voice as she discussed Taming and Summoning.
"I dabble," Lea Gilligan said.
'Damn understatement,' Caius thought, smiling to himself.
When Lea Gilligan compared 'Taming' to unique elements exclusive to families, she meant it. Her family—on her father's side—had spent centuries perfecting Taming techniques. They went so far as to undergo blood experiments meant to make them kin to Magical Beasts. It was why her eyes had a feline look to them. Her talent in Taming was far greater than just being a 'dabble'.
"Does that answer your question?" Lea suddenly asked and her eyes were back on Caius like she was letting him know she hadn't forgotten it was his question that led to this tangent.
There was still that look in her eyes that Caius didn't understand but he managed to keep a far more level tone as he said.
"Yes, it does, Professor."
"Good.
The Beast of the day is rated Three 'Stars' on the Adventurer's Guild Bestiary which means it's just right for you lot. Something light to start with."
As she was speaking, Lea Gilligan touched one of the pouches on one of her belts and it expanded so she could reach both her hands in and pull out a cage. Proving the pouches were not just meant for a look but had a function.
Storage items couldn't hold living creatures but the pouches—which had been enchanted to increase their holding capacity just like storage items—could.
Once the cage was out, the pouch collapsed to its regular size again as Lea held out the cage and the class saw something stirring inside. It had reddish-orange skin and spines running down its back and along its tail.
Professor Gilligan's face took on a cooing look as she said,
"Isn't it beautiful?
Behold the Fire-cracking Lizard. Your task for the day."

Chapter 53: Study of Magical Beasts (2)
"That thing is NOT beautiful," Eloise said.
As the first to arrive, she, Caius, and Kaya were at the front of the class and closest to the cage Professor Lea was holding out.
"Oh, I don't know," Kaya said with a gentle smile, "It does look kinda cute."
And then the Lizard turned its head at them and opened a mouth filled with fang-like teeth to let out a snarl that took the two girls by surprise and had them jumping back as they yelled in unison,
"Ahh!"
Professor Lea laughed in delight like the maniac Caius knew she was.
"Believe me when I say that this is a Fire-cracking lizard being calm. The cage is enchanted to soothe its more violet tendencies or it would have broken free already."
As she was talking, Professor Gilligan lowered the cage onto the ground which caused her boobs to distend a little in a very eye-catching way. Staring at them, many boys didn't realize she opened the cage and reached in to grab the lizard from inside it. They only really noticed when she stood upright again and had the Beast balanced on one open hand.
Immediately, the Lizard's face became screwed like it was concentrating or trying hard to take a poop but then its red patch of skin began to glow bright until it was a bright orange and looked like it was going to explode.
"Um, Professor..." Eloise started to point out but it was already too late.
*BOOOOMMMM!!!*
The explosion was loud and every student yelled out either taken over by fear or just startled by the sudden sound. They all leaped back a couple of steps as a cloud of smoke covered Professor Gilligan's entire upper body.
And then, they saw a fingerless-gloved hand waving through the smoke. The hand carried a gentle flow of wind and the smoke was quickly cleared to reveal the Professor smiling and looking as well as ever.
"Yes, these little things can do that," she said in a gentle voice,
"That's how they got their name. By exploding in many people's faces and burning off more than a few hairs.
The rating given to Beasts by the Adventurer's Guild Bestiary is determined by how much danger they pose. The ratings take account of everything from speed, strength, elemental affinities, and even intelligence.
Not all beasts are strong, not all beasts are fast, not all beasts possess elemental powers and certainly not all of them are intelligent."
She raised the Lizard for the class to know it was the one she was talking about as she said,
"These little ones have only speed and Elemental powers going for them. They are rated only Three Stars because it has been determined that their attacks can really only damage Third Circle Mages/Mage-Knights and below. Anything above that and you can brush it off like I just did."
Aurelius raised a hand and Professor Gilligan smiled at him.
"Yes?" She asked.
"If it evolves, does its rating improve?" He asked.
It seemed like a very random question to ask but Caius knew there was a reason for it. Before attending Lochxen and at the start of [To Kill A Demon Lord...], Aurelius had done a bit of hunting. He faced off against beasts that he'd easily defeat only for them to run away and return stronger. Even at the end of that plot, he never did understand why.
"Fire-Cracking Lizards don't evolve. Over 99% of Magical Beasts lack the ability to evolve and this includes even the ones with near-humanoid level intelligence.
Most of the reports on beasts capable of evolution are about the Legendary and Mythical sorts like Dragons and Phoenixes. We don't doubt it's true but those creatures are also just born very powerful so any further development might just be part of their growth and not some conscious desire to get stronger like we humans and other humanoid creatures do.
Humanoids evolve through some form of the Arcane Codex but most Magical Beasts lack the intelligence to comprehend it. And the ones who do have the intelligence don't have the patience for it because it is simply not their way."
"When you say 99% Professor, are Legendary and Mythical Beasts the only exception?" Aurelius asked in a follow-up.
Professor Lea Gilligan looked to be musing about that for a second or two before she said,
"Not necessarily. In this world of ours, there are always exceptions, they are just incredibly rare.
For example, there have been cases where excessive cannibalism can force a Magical Beast to evolve. But by that point, it's no longer considered part of its actual Beast genus but rather an 'Aberration'.
There have also been people in the past who have thought themselves geniuses for tinkering with the natural order and inducing 'forced Evolutions'. It never ends well and the 'Institute of the Conservation of Nature' takes such matters seriously. The results of such forced evolutions are not simply Aberrations but even worse creatures that are referred to as 'Abominations'."
Caius saw Aurelius mumble the word 'Abomination' to himself like he was finally making sense of the issue that had troubled him for months.
Professor Gilligan continued with a smile,
"But you don't have to worry about such things here. The inhabitants of the Lochxen Forest have been allowed to thrive as they naturally would. They don't contain any rare exceptions that can evolve so whatever you learn in class will allow you to accurately traverse the Forest."
"Traverse it?" Doran Langston asked suddenly in surprise and his eyes went over to the Forest where it was just shadowy because of the thick canopy that all the many gigantic trees cast overhead.
"Well, of course. You didn't think it was just for show, did you?" Professor Lea asked and laughed a little like it was a silly thing.
The laughter didn't appease Doran and although he was the only one in the class who seemed to be new to this piece of information, he was not the only one worried.
Most of the students had siblings or even their very parents who had gone through Lochxen and they had already been briefed that the Forest was a big part of the Academy experience. It's a bit like a test run of how to overcome dangers and also improve your survival skills in case you ever end up in such a situation once you're out of school and out in the world.
Of course, getting briefed about it didn't remove the dangerous aspects. Especially since most of them had had the experience played off as very scary by Older siblings who maybe wanted to be funny.
Professor Gilligan shook her head at those expressions,
"There would be no reason for Lochxen to let the Forest fester if it didn't serve a purpose. It's there for your education. Of course, measures have been taken to ensure the creatures within stay within and also keep wandering students out for your own safety.
But, when it's required, and with proper precautions in place, you will venture in and brave the dangers within.
It's gonna be awesome!"
Lea Gilligan said the last sentence with a wide grin and a wild look in her feline blue eyes like she couldn't wait to send them into the Forest. Like it would make for good entertainment.
Her expression and her words were not at all encouraging. If anything, it scared the class all the more. As Caius looked at their faces, he could see it dawning on most of them—especially the boys—that the Professor's joy and overall positive attitude might not be cute and might be a bit too dangerous.
That caused Caius to smile.
'They're starting to get it,' he thought with his eyes now on the Fire-cracking Lizard in the Professor's hand as its forked tongue continued to slither in and out of its mouth,
'She's nuts.'

Chapter 54: Fire-Cracking Lizards (1)
They spent the first few hours of class learning about the Fire-cracking lizard. For someone who prided herself on more practical classes than theory, Professor Lea Gilligan really rambled on.
She spoke so passionately about the subject that the students couldn't even be mad. That was until their wrists started to cramp up due to excessive note-taking. Because they were outside, they didn't have desks to place their books on as they took down the numerous dictations and they also didn't have chairs with backrests to lean against whenever they eventually got tired.
Of course, they were all soon seated on the soft grass and others even took it far enough to lie down for a more relaxing posture but it hardly helped with the wrist cramps. At least for those who were serious about taking notes.
And then finally, with a wide smile on her face, she asked,
"Any questions?"
The entire class was so tired and numb that no one really had any questions and just stared like they were really hoping this was the end. The more time-conscious of the bunch noted that there was still some time in this double-period and wondered what the rest of the time was going to be spent on since the Professor looked to be finalizing her lecture.
"No questions?" Professor Gilligan asked when no one raised a hand and then she smiled,
"Fantastic. Shows you understand enough about the Fire-cracking Lizard to pacify them."
"Them?" Aylin Khione asked and sat up off the ground, sharing looks with her gang of friends at the plural.
"Pacify?" Kaya asked, taking note of a different word.
"Indeed," Professor Gilligan said and reached into one of her pouches to pull out small black discs. There were about eight of them that she tossed up so they began to land on the ground with little 'Thud' sounds.
The discs let out a humming sound then and each released Magical energy that took the form of a net. The nets from each disc connected in a circular ring that then rose off the ground to connect above and complete the formation of a netted Dome.
Caius saw Delia reach out to the net. In her bid to stay apart from most of the class, she was the closest and the first one to discover that despite the netted look, there was no space to be exploited in the dome. It also didn't give way no matter how hard she shoved.
"Nothing in. Nothing out," Professor Gilligan said and touched one of her pouches so it expanded enough for her to reach both her hands into it and lift out a gigantic cage containing not one, not five, not ten, but at least Forty Fire-Cracking Lizards.
She opened the cage and the Lizards poured out, hitting the ground and baring their fang-like teeth at the class as they let out hisses in unison that still came out in a disorderly crowd of noise.
The entire class was immediately on their feet and moved as far away from the hissing lizards as they possibly could.
"The Cage has been forcefully pacifying them for hours and they've spent all that time in my Pouch so they're pretty pissed. They will come at you with all they've got. And when they discover that there's no escape, they'll come at you even harder," Professor Gilligan said with a grin as she stuffed the cage back into her pouch and touched it so it returned to its normal size.
The class was lined up now with their backs pressed against the inner surface of the net dome as most of them stared at the Professor like she was insane.
"Professor, you can't be serious!" Eloise said as the Lizards began to spread out, coming at them from multiple angles while Lea Gilligan crossed her arms beneath her large breasts and eyed them all like a proud Mama bird waiting for them to fly.
"Just remember everything I've taught you and you'll be fine..." Professor Gilligan said right before everything devolved into Chaos.
The Lizards suddenly leaped at the students and their red patch of skin glowed in unison as they primed to explode.
Kaya took one step forward and with a wave of her hand, she made a wall of water appear just in time to shield her, Caius, and Eloise from the blast.
Alas, the combination of explosions from so many lizards all at once overwhelmed her shield, slamming the three with enough force to slam them even harder against the inner surface of the net dome.
Kaya was not the only one to cast a defensive spell.
Aylin Khione erected a wall of ice.
Delia Kragsten created a defensive windshield that crackled with lightning.
Aurelius cast Mandala.
Doran Langston made a thick earthen wall appear.
All over, so many in the class reacted quickly enough to defend from the combined blast. However, it was so powerful that it overwhelmed them all.
Most surprising was Aurelius' Mandala losing here when it had managed against Professor Kragsten's lightning attack during Combat Magic Class. It drove into the heads of many just how serious the situation was.
Worse yet, after their first combined blasts, the Fire-Cracking Lizards were getting primed for another. This time, no one tried defensive spells. They just ran and tried to put distance between themselves and the coming blast.
The force of the explosion still sent them flying. Caius hit the ground with Kaya and Eloise within two feet of him. And then he heard the pitter-patter sounds of tiny feet running across the grassy ground and looked to see multiple Lizards coming his way.
~Wind Scythe~
The spell circle appeared and transformed into a focused wind attack that he swung at the Lizards. Most were fast enough to avoid it. The unlucky ones were sliced in two, littering the ground with their guts.
"You're to pacify them, not kill them," Professor Gilligan said.
"Don't think we have a choice," Eloise said through gritted teeth looking to be preparing a killing spell-cast of her own. She was mostly talking to herself but the Professor heard her easily.
"Pacify. Don't kill," she cautioned and patted her pouch, "I have more of them with me. For every one you kill, I'll replace. And if I feel like it, I.e. if you piss me off, I'll replace every kill you make with two more.
Remember my lectures. You should know how to pacify them with non-lethal force."
Eloise was on one knee now as she waved her hand and summoned a spell circle in the form of a magic note that let out a thrumming sound that was deep in vibrations.
Her spell compressed wind and slammed the Lizards that had avoided Caius' spell and were scuttling closer, smacking them away. She kept the spell up for a full minute after that because the Lizards never stayed away and always returned to try again.
Just then...
*Kraka-bang!*
There was a flash of lightning and ten Lizards fell to the ground around Delia Kragsten whose eyes were wild in seething anger. She had soot on her face and Caius could tell she had suffered a point-blank blast.
"I warned you," Professor Gilligan said shaking her head with a sigh. She reached into her pouch and pulled out a cage as large as the one she had used to deposit the Lizards currently wreaking havoc in the dome.
She opened the cage and true to her word, counted ten Lizards that she let drop to the ground to replace the ones Delia had killed.
"And for extra measure," Professor Gilligan said as she released an additional five Fire-cracking Lizards.
"Thanks a lot," Marcus Arognite groaned at Delia while standing about two feet away from her and staring at the Fifteen Lizards coming to join the fray.
"Shut up!" Delia said with a fist crackling with lightning raised in annoyance.
The thing was, Caius didn't blame her. This was partly because his instinct was to kill the scurrying exploding bastards himself but also because he felt strongly that the blame should be with Lea Gilligan.
For someone who had claimed 'Failure' was a part of the learning process, she was being very unforgiving.
And there lies the problem with her as the class as a whole was now starting to realize;
Although Lea Gilligan was more positive and jovial than Anne Gilligan, she was still her mother's daughter and in a way, she might be even worse.

Chapter 55: Fire-Cracking Lizards (2)
"Kaya, trap them. Hold them down," Caius called out.
Kaya barely gave a nod of acknowledgment but she had heard him. She was in a spell-casting pose and, thrusting her arms forward, she summoned a green spell circle teeming with the life and energy of nature before it conjured vines that created a netted wall to stop the ten or so Lizards that were about to get too close for comfort.
The Lizards hissed and the sounds only hit louder pitches when Kaya changed her netted wall of vines from a vertical position to a horizontal one, holding all the Lizards against the ground and restricting their movement.
"Well done," Caius said. But just then, the Lizards began to glow as they primed for an explosion.
*BOOMMM!!!*
In a flash of light followed by smoke and the smell of burning vines, most of the Lizards were free and skittered all about.
"Sorry," Kaya said sounding frustrated.
"It's fine," Caius said, "You got one. That's enough."
Indeed, although most of the Lizards had escaped, one remained tangled in vines and was already getting primed for another blast that would surely free it.
"Water!" Caius called out.
Although he had a high affinity with all the basic elements, the truth was he had only been taught Wind, Lightning, and Fire spells and this was because they were his Parents' (most especially his Father's) Affinities. Plus, all the spells he knew in those three elements were mobility, attacking, and burst damage spells. Just the exact types a Mage-Knight known for charging head-on into battle would bother to be proficient in.
Fortunately, although Caius didn't know any Water Magic spells yet, that was not the case for the two ladies he was with. Kaya was busy with Nature Magic so Eloise stepped in, showing she wasn't only about Sound Magic.
With a specific hand movement, she made a blue spell circle appear and it congealed into a bubble of water that fell down and onto the Lizard right as it was about to explode, dousing its flames.
"Huh," Eloise said and she looked surprised that it worked. She had just acted because Caius called for Water but now she found herself mumbling,
"Why didn't I think of that?"
The truth was that it was probably a subconscious reaction to the fact that the Water shields that Kaya and so many others had erected when this all started had all been destroyed by the exploding Lizards. Of course, the situation had been different then; That had been a collection of multiple explosions at once and this was dousing a single explosion before it could actually detonate. Just a matter of scale.
Caius reached through the gaps in the net of vines to pin the lizard down and even harder against the ground as he felt around at the nape of its neck, right before the first spine of many that went down across its back and down to its tail.
"What are you doing?" Kaya asked as she was still conjuring vines to smack the Lizards coming at them aside.
"Give me a second," Caius said with his face steeled up in concentration. The lizard had shaken off its wetness and was getting primed to explode again when...
"Found it!" Caius said like he was yelling out 'Eureka'. There was a gap in the Lizard's neck and within those gaps were ball-like things that felt like buttons. They even clicked when Caius pressed down on them.
*Hisssss...*
The Lizard let out a loud snarling sound and then flopped against the ground, completely unresponsive.
"Is it dead?" Kaya asked, nervous and glancing over at Professor Gilligan who was smiling but hadn't tried to pull out her cage of lizards to release replacements.
"No," Caius said, shaking his head, "Just pacified. It won't move again for at least an hour."
Upon closer inspection, Kaya saw the Lizard was indeed still breathing. Its chest heaved like it was having a peaceful sleep and dreaming a good dream. It was almost cute.
"How did you know to do that?" Eloise asked, sounding impressed.
"She taught us," Caius said with a head gesture at Professor Gilligan who was looking proud.
"She did?" Eloise asked when her mouth was suddenly open in an 'O' shape of realization. With a flick of her wrist, she took her notebook out of her storage bracelet and flipped through page after page of details about the Fire-Cracking Lizards that she had taken down.
Then she let out a gasp,
"By the gods, you're right!" She said and pointed at a single three-lined paragraph in over ten pages of notes that said;
'Fire-Cracking Lizards possess pacifying nodes at the napes of their neck. By pressing down on these nodes, you can render them passive. Skilled handlers have long used this to gather them with minimal force and damage.'
"She expected us to remember that in all these notes?!" Eloise yelled out in annoyance and swung her notebook just in time to smack two Lizards aside.
Caius leaped at the Lizards but saw their little legs start up in a run, knowing he would not catch up. Speed and Elemental Affinity were all the Fire-cracking Lizards had going for them but it was more than enough to outclass a Third Circle Mage like he and the rest of his classmates.
Fortunately, he was catching the Lizards at a time when they were still a bit disoriented from getting slammed in the face so with a cast of ~Wispy Feet~ to give him a boost, he was upon them before they could get away. He pinned the two down and had an easier time finding their nodes, pressing down on them to turn them passive so they uselessly flopped on the ground.
"I mean, Caius remembered," Kaya said looking impressed as Caius put down another two.
Of course, it wasn't because Caius had paid better attention or because he had taken better notes. He just knew what the Lizards' weaknesses were from reading about the class going through this very exercise in [To Kill A Demon Lord...].
"Screw that!" Baler Khione said suddenly with he, Aurelius, and Doran surrounded by tens of Lizards,
"Let's just kill them all. Doran!"
Baler's words informed Caius that quite a bit of the class had been paying attention to him pacifying the three lizards but even more important was how, like the idiot Baler was, he opted to kill the Lizards still. Even worse, Doran actually listened to him.
Doran had a seal prepared and thrust it up to create a spell circle that became an Earthen fist and slammed down to destroy more than half of the Lizards around them.
"You moron!" Aylin yelled and was already tossing a ball of ice at her brother's face. It struck him in the cheek and exploded with enough force to send him flying and slamming into the inner surface of the net dome.
Even then, Professor Gilligan was already releasing more Lizards to replace the dead ones with a good bit of extra to boot.
"Look what you did!" Aylin yelled and her light blue eyes looked so annoyed, she looked ready to turn her brother into a solid block of ice.
"What?!" Baler yelled back at her and stared at the Lizards that were coming at him,
"She'll run out of these disgusting things eventually. Just keep killing them till then!"
As if to prove his point, he cast a spell circle that congealed into ice spikes and stabbed down. The intent was clearly to skewer a bunch of Lizards into the ground. Alas, most of his spikes were wide off target and the ones that would have hit were dodged by the Lizards' incredibly quick footwork.
They leaped at him as one and glowed to explode. To defend himself, Baler erected an ice wall that was frankly pathetic when compared to what his sister had conjured earlier. And just like that of his sister, the wall shattered and the force of the blast sent him slamming back-first into the inner surface of the net dome again.
And that was when Caius raised his voice in a yell so that every one of his classmates would hear him,
"Everyone, go for their necks!" He said and picked up one of the Pacified Lizards to point at where they had to press down on,
"Press this down and they'll stop moving!"

As he was yelling, Caius' eyes were on Baler's and then his lips turned up in a smirk that he knew would piss the grey haired boy off even more.

Caius was sure Baler had the good sense to know that pacifying the Lizards would be far more viable than trying to out-kill Professor Gilligan's supply. The only reason he suggested the stupid plan was to try not to acknowledge that Caius figured out the 'key' to beating the exercise before he or anyone else did. It was all an ego thing that he hadn't let go of since Breakfast and that incident where Caius fed Eloise food.
"You Ass!" Baler said with a groan and with his fists clenched in anger.
Caius was already looking away though.
"Eloise!" He called out.
"On it!" Eloise said in the most ready-for-action voice she had probably ever given as she formed seals that she infused with Mana to create a large spell circle.
At the same time, Caius gave Kaya a nod, which she returned as she put even more energy into her Nature Magic spell casting, creating a wide net of vines to slam down and pin the Lizards.
When the Lizards primed to explode, Eloise let her water magic spell rain down and douse their flames before Caius stepped forward and began reaching into the gaps of the net of vines, pressing down on their nodes until at least half of them flopped and were completely passive.
The other half managed to explode and destroy the vines, and began to scurry away. But just then, Aylin Khione took on a spell-casting pose with her fingers splayed out as she created a large spell circle that she slammed into the ground to freeze it over. Creating a smooth icy surface that the Lizards struggled to get traction on as they skidded all about due to the lack of friction.
But Aylin wasn't done. With a specific move of her fingers, she created a barrier around the icy ground she had made, and the sliding Lizards slammed into them, hard enough to disorient them for a few seconds. Or so she thought.
Alas, from the moment the Lizards were sliding, they were already getting ready to free themselves from the icy hell they were in. Their red skin glowed, ready to explode and shatter the ice so they could get back to running.
Eloise had been so surprised by the suddenly iced-up ground that she didn't have a water spell prepared to stop the coming explosion.
Kaya was ready to take over when a cyclone of wind suddenly blew across the icy ground, carrying with it a splatter of water that became powerful enough to appear like down downpour of rain. The waters doused the priming explosions and the cyclone of wind unraveled to reveal Delia Kragsten with her stormy grey eyes focused.
Delia was on one knee and grabbed one Lizard at the base of its neck, pressing down until it became passive. She moved on to the next and then the next after that until she had pacified more than seven lizards in seconds.
Alas, as fast as she was, the Lizards were arguably even faster. They WERE known for their speed after all. Delia knew she wouldn't be able to pacify them all before they were ready to explode again. She had a water spell ready for that scenario but then, Aylin Khione was there.
Aylin walked across the ice like it was concrete. She had one hand turned up and above her palm was an icy blue spell circle that moved according to her whims and manipulations.
It was unclear what she was doing until tiny little pincers of ice rose out of the icy ground and grabbed every single lizard by the neck, locating precisely where their nodes were before pressing down and turning them passive. All within seconds. And all before the Lizards could explode.
"Hmph," she said and brushed at her uniform daintily as her eyes went from Delia to Caius, grinning like she was expecting praise as she announced,
"And that's how you do that. Didn't even have to touch the disgusting things."
Caius raised a thumbs-up. It was impressive spell control after all.
Delia looked annoyed for some reason and the two Lizards that leaped at her suffered it. They exploded but she used a double defense of wind and water to endure the blast and once it was over, she grabbed the two by their necks, slammed them into the icy ground that Aylin still hadn't thawed, and pressed down on their nodes.
"Well done," Caius said turning his thumbs up towards her too.
Delia snorted and turned her nose up at him before she slid off the icy surface to seek out Lizard targets elsewhere.
With so many Fire-Cracking Lizards now pacified, the exercise seemed less daunting. The class quickly broke up into groups with some dedicated to countering the Lizard-explosions and pinning them down so others could pacify them.
Baler still sat with his back against the wall, quietly seething and looking intent on staying away from the exercise. Without his encouragement, Doran didn't drop any more Earthen fists and worked with Aurelius instead.
Aurelius focused on countering and pinning the Lizards while Doran pacified them with little spell casting required.
No group pacified more Lizards than the trio of Caius, Kaya, and Eloise. It was likely because they started on it earlier than anyone else. Or maybe it was because Kaya's widespread vine creation seemed made for the trapping of annoying reptilian critters like this.

Or how you'd fare as Adventurers at all."
Many students just glared at the Study of Magical Beasts Professor with many grumbling at the idea that this was supposed to be easy and others annoyed at the very thought of taking this as a career path.
"Oh, don't be like that," Professor Gilligan said with a smile at all the sounds of discontent,
"Didn't you have fun? And it's only going to get even better!"
"I doubt it," Eloise said. Many of the girls nodded in agreement. The boys were more reluctant.
