Three demons came through the falling fragments together. One approached from the front while the other two shifted toward his sides, their movements coordinated tightly enough that they intended to close a triangle around Haotian as soon as he committed to any one direction. He drew upon concealment principles learned from Umbrel Spire, not vanishing from their senses but reducing the reliability of the cues upon which their coordination depended. Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing removed the remaining rhythm from his steps.
The demon on the right reacted toward a landing that never produced sound, while the one ahead shifted half a step too early. Cloud-Sundering Steps carried Haotian through the weakness before the triangular formation corrected. He reached the rear connection and placed a close-range strike from the Demon God Killing Martial Arts into the cultivator anchoring the arrangement. The demon fell away from the other two, and the trap ceased existing as one coordinated structure.
One survivor attacked from the side while another demon descended from above. Haotian slipped beneath the falling cultivator, caught the wrist, and redirected the body into the path of the lateral attack rather than stopping either through brute force. The two demons collided, one taking his ally's technique across the torso while the other lost control of the landing. Haotian followed the falling body down with his palm.
Dragon Vein Collapse entered through contact. The armor remained mostly intact because the technique did not care about the surface, following the internal routes through which cultivation circulated instead. One channel failed, energy backed into neighboring pathways, and several more collapsed under pressure they had never been meant to carry. The demon hit the ground conscious enough to understand that his qi no longer obeyed him properly.
Haotian moved before coalition cultivators could gather around the opening he had created. That was how the breadth of his martial knowledge mattered, not as a parade of names but as answers suited to different problems. Cloud-Sundering Steps handled changing geometry, Thousand Mirage Steps defeated prediction, Fist of Ruin destroyed an armored target without wasting force, and Heaven-Piercer Step removed the distance required for a ranged technique. Each art entered because the battlefield called for what it did.
Seraph Shatter Palm broke the defense that replaced the interrupted ranged attack, while the Dao of the Universe dismantled a structured technique without matching it through raw strength. Umbrel concealment principles and Silent Flow ruined coordinated perception, the Demon God Killing Martial Arts broke a close-range formation, and Dragon Vein Collapse attacked what armor could not protect. Haotian did not consciously search through a catalogue while fighting. The enemy created a problem, and years of accumulated martial knowledge produced the appropriate answer.
Behind the leading exchanges, Liora worked through a different kind of pressure. Wounded cultivators reached the Veridian healers in greater numbers as the front widened, and she treated each according to what the body required rather than attempting complete restoration in the middle of active combat. A long cut through a thigh received enough Life essence to draw damaged muscle together and prevent continued movement from tearing it farther, while a cultivator whose chest had absorbed a heavy impact received enough stabilization to restore breathing without wasting power repairing injuries that could wait. Every choice preserved strength for whoever arrived next.
A third cultivator had forced too much qi through an already damaged meridian, and that wound demanded more attention because another technique could turn temporary damage into permanent loss. Liora supported the injured channel and sent him toward the rear rather than allowing pride to keep him at the front. Healing everyone completely would exhaust her long before the stronghold fell, while allowing everyone to continue regardless of injury would destroy cultivators who might otherwise recover. Her role required knowing the difference.
Several demons broke through a nearby section and moved toward the healers. Liora did not abandon the wounded or wait for someone stronger to save her, because Life shifted into Wood through the cultivation already flowing around her. Roots emerged through cracks opened in the paving by earlier impacts and wrapped around boots and calves, not attempting to become enormous structures capable of overpowering cultivators who could tear them apart. They needed only to interrupt one step.
A demon ripped through the first strand and caught his next foot on another. The hesitation lasted a heartbeat, which was enough for a Veridian fighter to drive a weapon through the opening beneath his guard. Another attacker released Fire and burned through the roots nearest him, but Liora withdrew the vitality supporting that growth instead of wasting strength preserving something that had already lost. New roots emerged behind the demon, caught his trailing leg, and broke his stance for another Veridian cultivator to finish.
Liora returned to the wounded before the bodies finished falling. Her battlefield contribution did not need to resemble Haotian's or his wives' in order to matter, because every cultivator stabilized behind the front remained another person capable of holding the stronghold after the first surge passed. The Veridian healers around her followed the same principle, spending enough strength to preserve function without pretending an active battlefield offered time for perfect restoration. The army advanced partly because its injuries were being managed before they became losses.
Farther east, Tianlan's response group finished its previous engagement and shifted toward the widening front. The two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons crossed above the buildings before he entered the broader road, their movements independent rather than joined to his senses through a bond that did not yet exist. Tianlan looked up once to locate them and returned his attention to the enemies ahead. Years of fighting together had made anything more unnecessary.
A demonic group moved toward the eastern side of the coalition advance to stop him. Tianlan lowered his spear and began Ninefold Thrust, allowing the first strike to force a guard upward before the second arrived while the defender's shoulders were still recovering. The third changed angle, the fourth shifted to another target entirely, and the fifth drove that second opponent backward into the man behind him. The sequence spread pressure through the formation rather than repeating the same thrust nine times against one defense.
The sixth attack threatened a weapon hand, while the seventh forced that weapon far enough outward to expose the officer behind it. Tianlan did not continue mechanically merely because the technique contained nine thrusts, because the opening he wanted had already appeared. His next attack passed through that opening and entered the officer's chest. A weapon cut toward Tianlan's side as he withdrew the spear.
Rotating Spears answered through one continuous motion. The shaft redirected the incoming blade away from his body, the lower end struck the attacker's knee, and the spearhead completed the rotation toward another demon before the first regained his stance. One Frost Rainbow Falcon folded its wings and descended through the opening Tianlan had created, its claws striking the destabilized cultivator before it climbed immediately out of reach. The second Falcon remained above rather than diving simply because the first had attacked.
Several breaths later, Tianlan's spear forced another opponent sideways and created a different angle. The second Falcon descended from the opposite direction, forcing the demon to choose between defending against the bird and correcting his stance against Tianlan. No invisible connection passed information between them, because none was required. Tianlan created openings, the Falcons recognized them, and their attacks produced reactions that he had learned to use in return.
The western defensive concentration began losing the structure it had fought so hard to build. Lianhua's Voidpierce Sword Sutra broke the layered relationships through which the first defenses supported one another, Yueru repeatedly cut forming techniques at their vulnerable convergence points, and Ziyue's Severing Arc forced entire sections of the formation to move when the officers needed them to remain still. Xiangyin entered those openings with the spear, Yanfei punished every attempt to compress around her, Shuyue prevented the abyssal pressure from turning coalition discipline into panic, and Yinxue broke new defensive arrangements each time the demons tried to restore them. Every recovery attempt encountered another member of the family already working against a different part of the same formation.
Haotian moved through the places where stronger officers attempted to repair what the others had broken. Liora kept accumulated injuries from thinning the coalition's numbers, while Tianlan and the two Falcons strengthened the eastern side before the defenders could exploit it. Around all of them, Blue Sphere cultivators held where stability mattered, Pyrelith destroyed dense concentrations that did not require one of the main characters, Marephoros restricted retreat, Umbrel entered gaps behind the defenders, Veridian shaped damaged terrain, and Celestara cultivators controlled the spaces above the road. The family did not replace the coalition; it amplified what the coalition was already doing.
The demons continued fighting even as their structure deteriorated. Officers forced new barriers upward, reserve soldiers filled holes left by the dead, and veteran cultivators attempted to slow the strongest coalition members long enough for the ordinary troops behind them to reorganize. The problem was that every repair occurred inside a battlefield already changing around it, so a barrier built to stop Lianhua might open a route for Xiangyin, while a formation widened to avoid Yanfei's Frostfire exposed itself to Ziyue. The defenders were not simply being overpowered but denied the time needed to make one answer last.
Eventually the western concentration stopped functioning as a single defensive body. The rear ranks began withdrawing through the military structures behind them, while others remained trapped in fights they could no longer win because the coalition had already passed their flanks. No celebration followed the collapse. The people at the front simply kept moving into the ground being abandoned.
As the final defensive layers cleared, the structure behind them became visible. It occupied the junction of two internal reinforcement roads and differed from the surrounding military buildings in ways that immediately marked its importance, with formation pillars sunk directly into the paving and inscription lines running beneath the road into neighboring foundations. Several smaller structures had been positioned around the main building according to a pattern that made their relationship impossible to dismiss. Demonic officers and formation specialists were already moving hurriedly around it.
Some carried records and communication plates toward the rear, while others remained beside the active pillars attempting to redirect the local arrays toward the coalition. The western defensive concentration had not merely been protecting another military building. It had been protecting part of the stronghold's internal command system. The coalition did not need to understand every function to know what had to happen next.
A Blue Sphere formation elder examined the active relationships only long enough to identify the supports that mattered. He did not attempt to reverse engineer the Abyss formations, because learning how the enemy operated its own fortress in the middle of an assault would cost time without producing an advantage worth the delay. Once the critical pillars were identified, Pyrelith cultivators moved toward the western support. Their first concentrated strike shattered the base.
The system reacted automatically. Energy that had been distributed through the western pillar surged toward the northern support as the remaining formation attempted to compensate for the loss. Yanfei struck during that redistribution, wrapping Frostfire around the structure before the altered flow could settle. Cold seized the outer material first, contracting it around inscription channels already carrying more energy than usual.
Fire followed before the pillar could adapt. The sudden expansion drove stress through the contracted structure, opening fractures along the active inscriptions and widening them toward the core. The formation attempted another redistribution, but the failure moved faster than the correction. The northern support split.
Xiangyin reached the third physical anchor. Her spear struck where the support entered the paving, concentrating power through a point already carrying more of the formation's burden than it had been designed to sustain. Stone fractured around the base, the structure bent, and Xiangyin drove through until the anchor broke free of the road. Ziyue's sword moved almost immediately afterward.
Dao of the Sword — Tenfold Elements, Severing Arc did not need its full battlefield width. She narrowed the technique and sent the severing force through the exposed inscription lines connecting what remained of the network to the command building. Metal sharpened the cut, Lightning disrupted the last active relationships, and the formation flickered as though attempting to rebuild itself through whatever connections survived. Then the protective field disappeared.
Pyrelith cultivators struck the building itself. The upper level collapsed into the communication chamber beneath it, dragging stone, dark metal, formation components, records, and equipment into one ruined mass. Nobody entered to search for controls or determine whether some part of the system might still function. It had been capable of helping the demons, and now it could not.
The coalition moved on before the dust fully settled. A major supply depot lay farther inside the district, its heavy exterior walls damaged but still standing when the first mixed teams reached it. Weapon racks filled the interior, demonic medicine remained sealed behind protective inscriptions, and formation components occupied secured sections along the rear. Under other circumstances, much of it might have been worth studying.
During an active assault, every weapon left intact was a weapon the defenders might use again. Every medicine store could return wounded demons to the fight, and every formation component could repair a system the coalition had already paid to destroy. Pyrelith cultivators therefore struck the weapon stores instead of wasting time sorting through them. The first explosions remained mostly within the depot, but the amount of combustible material inside threatened to spread fire into nearby structures the coalition already controlled.
Yanfei adjusted before the destruction became a danger to her own side. Frostfire moved along the outer walls and support areas, freezing sections through which ordinary flame might otherwise travel. The cold created a temporary boundary while heat continued consuming the interior stores, allowing the depot to burn inward rather than spread recklessly through the district. Coalition formations passed beyond it without waiting to see what survived.
Farther north, formation specialists identified a gate-control relay connected to the larger wall network. None of them pretended that reaching the system meant they understood how to operate it, and no one suggested experimenting with Abyss controls while thousands of soldiers fought nearby. Haotian approached only long enough to examine the active relationships through the Dao of the Universe. He followed the connections with one purpose: determine what would happen when the structure died.
The physical gate would remain closed. No hidden defense would activate automatically, and the loss would not redirect enough energy elsewhere to trigger an uncontrolled chain reaction through the wall formations. Once Haotian confirmed that, there was nothing more worth learning in the moment. The coalition destroyed the relay.
The gate could remain barred. They were already inside.
Veridian teams treated the underground routes with the same practicality. They entered only far enough to determine where each tunnel led and whether any demonic movement still used it, preserving the passages only while coalition formations required them. Once their own people passed beyond the useful exits, Wood cultivation withdrew from damaged supports and allowed stone to collapse inward. A route denied to both sides was preferable to one the demons might later use to reach the coalition rear.
Umbrel Spire concentrated on information rather than infrastructure. The shadow cultivators did not waste time hunting every demonic soldier who fled from a broken formation, because a frightened man running without purpose carried little strategic value. An officer protecting a communication plate while moving directly toward the central district was different. Purpose identified the target.
Those targets disappeared in alleys, on rooftops, and between damaged buildings. Several messengers never reached the commanders waiting for them, while others died carrying corrections to reports that had already been sent. The stronghold did not become silent, because too many people still possessed voices, cultivation, and local communication methods for that to happen. What disappeared was certainty.
One commander learned that the western gate network had failed but did not know whether the physical gate itself had been seized. Another heard that Pyrelith cultivators were destroying supply structures and interpreted the report as sabotage by a limited infiltration force, while a third received news that Celestara and Radiant forces occupied parts of the internal airspace. A wall commander waited for a messenger already lying dead between two buildings. Another officer received an older report and treated it as current because the correction never arrived.
Each missing piece forced someone to guess. The stronghold had been designed so information moved inward from the walls and orders moved outward from command, but Haotian's infiltration had placed the coalition directly inside those lines and allowed the army to tear apart the routes through which the fortress understood itself. Command buildings could be rebuilt later, depots could be restocked, and collapsed tunnels could be excavated after the war. What could not be restored quickly was a shared understanding of where the enemy actually was.
The Demon Generals began acting on different versions of the same battle. The western General already engaged near the north-west junction received information that coalition forces had advanced beyond the original assembly district. The report was accurate in the broadest possible sense and nearly useless in every detail. It did not tell him how far the front had moved, what systems had been destroyed, or how thoroughly the original breach had ceased to matter.
Remaining at the junction no longer appeared sensible. From the information available to him, continuing to fight over wall access while a larger threat expanded through the interior would allow the coalition to strike increasingly important positions before he responded. The wall could be recovered later if the stronghold still possessed an organized interior. The General gathered the elite cultivators still close enough to follow him and withdrew.
The coalition forces holding the junction did not chase. Several cultivators watched the powerful demonic presence disappear along the internal route, but nobody abandoned the position merely because an important enemy had turned his back. Their task had been to take and secure the junction, and the fact that the General chose to leave did not change the value of what they held. Discipline mattered more than the temptation to pursue a powerful opponent.
They tightened the formation around the captured approach, moved the wounded farther from its exposed edge, and rotated fresher cultivators into the places where exhaustion had begun slowing reactions. Formation specialists examined the nearby control structures and marked everything still capable of helping the demons recover access to the wall. Those systems were destroyed rather than preserved for some hypothetical later use. The junction remained coalition ground.
The Demon General continued deeper into the stronghold with his remaining elites spread around him. Several moved ahead through intersections, others stayed behind and to the sides, and all maintained enough spacing that one large attack could not catch the entire group together. The General himself did not rush blindly toward the latest report of fighting. Urgency had not erased caution.
He slowed at the first major intersection and extended his perception through adjoining streets. One road carried signs of recent movement but no immediate fighting, another held distant cultivation fluctuations, and a third had been partially obstructed by damage to the surrounding structures. He selected the clearer route and continued. At the next intersection, something about the fortress began feeling wrong in a way the reports had not described.
A stronghold under attack should have carried organized movement through its interior. Reserve groups should have been passing between command posts, messengers should have been moving toward wall districts, and formation specialists should have been reinforcing nodes before enemies reached them. Instead, some roads were nearly empty, while others contained bodies without any active demonic unit nearby. A side passage had collapsed too completely to resemble incidental battle damage.
The General passed the remains of a communication position whose upper structure had been torn open. Dark formation material lay across the road, its Abyss markings still visible beneath dust and fragments of stone. The system had not been occupied or crudely damaged during a struggle. It had been destroyed deliberately.
That distinction changed the meaning of what he was seeing. A small infiltration team might sabotage communication to create confusion before withdrawing, but an army intending to remain inside had reason to ensure the system never functioned again. The General accelerated, and his elites followed without tightening their spacing. The signs ahead were becoming harder to explain through the smaller intrusion described in his reports.
Haotian felt the approaching presence before the western frontline saw the General. He was moving with the coalition through the district beyond the destroyed command structure when the heavier cultivation pressure entered the edge of his perception, stable and controlled rather than erratic. He did not need to extend the Dao Palace of the Universe directly toward it to understand what was coming. A Demon General was approaching.
Haotian continued moving. Through the broader flow of the stronghold, he followed the presence as it advanced quickly along one road, slowed at an intersection, then resumed while several smaller but still powerful cultivators remained distributed around it. The General was examining unfamiliar terrain instead of charging toward the first sound of battle. Haotian recognized discipline in that movement.
The demon's problem was not incompetence. He understood enough to know that the battlefield had changed and was making sensible decisions with the information available to him. The weakness lay in the fact that every report guiding those decisions already described conditions the coalition had moved beyond. Haotian saw no reason to interrupt that mistake.
He did not pull his wives from their positions. He did not stop the mixed teams and build an ambush around one intersection, nor did he order the high-level cultivators across the entire front to gather merely because one Demon General was approaching. The coalition had spent the surprise phase destroying exactly the infrastructure the General would need if he wanted to convert his arrival into an organized response. Letting him walk into the battlefield alone was better than reorganizing the entire army around him.
The offensive therefore continued. Remaining demonic troops withdrew toward deeper districts in uneven groups, with some officers attempting to gather enough men around intersections to delay the advance while others abandoned positions they recognized could no longer be held. The inconsistent decisions reflected the same fracture affecting the entire stronghold. No commander possessed enough information to make his choice line up perfectly with what another commander several streets away was doing.
Haotian's wives remained spread through the front. Lianhua moved with the Sword cultivators pressing through the left side of the district, her blade lowered between engagements but never sheathed while enemies remained nearby, while Yueru and Ziyue held separate positions that allowed their Sword paths to support the same advance without forcing both women into identical roles. Yinxue stayed nearer the center where surviving officers repeatedly attempted to rebuild defensive lines.
Xiangyin continued through the sections where the road gave her spear enough room to use its full reach, while Yanfei remained close enough for Frostfire to support the same advance without spreading through friendly positions. Shuyue moved among the mixed formations rather than separating herself merely because her cultivation exceeded most of the soldiers around her, and Liora remained farther behind the foremost line where the wounded could still reach her safely. Tianlan held the eastern side with the two Frost Rainbow Falcons circling above damaged buildings and descending only when the movement below created worthwhile openings.
Nobody gathered around Haotian when the Demon General approached. That alone would have told an experienced enemy something important, because the coalition was not waiting for its strongest cultivator to solve the battlefield before everyone else could continue. The mixed teams were still moving, the infrastructure teams were still destroying what needed to be destroyed, and the support lines remained active behind them. Haotian was one part of the offensive, even if he was its strongest individual fighter.
The Demon General crossed another district and found more evidence that refused to fit the picture he had been given. A supply structure burned behind a damaged outer wall, but the destruction remained concentrated inward rather than spreading randomly into neighboring buildings, revealing that someone had deliberately controlled the way it was ruined. Farther ahead, a road toward one gate sector carried no active formation pulse where a relay should have connected to the wall network. The General searched for that familiar relationship and found nothing.
At another intersection, one of his elites moved toward an underground access route and found only collapsed stone. The passage had not merely failed during fighting above it, because the supports had been broken in a way that denied the route intentionally. Every sign pointed toward the same conclusion. The enemy was not simply surviving inside the stronghold.
It was stripping the stronghold of the ability to function as a stronghold. Walls could remain standing and gates could remain barred, yet neither mattered as much if communication, reserves, internal movement, supply, and control systems ceased working behind them. The General had left one threatened junction intending to contain a breach. Instead, he was moving through the remains of a fortress being dismantled from the inside.
The sounds of battle finally became clear ahead. They did not belong to one clash but several overlapping engagements, with weapons striking through nearby streets, elemental techniques rolling between buildings, and the collapse of stone arriving from somewhere beyond the next district. The General slowed before the final intersection and allowed his elites to spread wider around him. His perception extended ahead.
What returned stopped him for one brief moment. There were too many coalition presences, and they were not packed tightly around one penetration point as the reports had implied. They spread through streets, rooftops, underground routes, and multiple adjoining districts. The General stepped forward until the road opened enough for him to see the battlefield without obstruction.
Blue Sphere formations occupied the main approach. They were not clinging to some narrow breach but possessed enough depth to rotate cultivators from the first line and enough room behind them for replacements to move forward without disorder. Umbrel Spire controlled the side passages between buildings so thoroughly that any demonic formation trying to use those routes would now have to treat them as enemy territory. Marephoros forces supported the central advance, shaping movement through streets already damaged beyond their original geometry.
Farther behind the front, Pyrelith cultivators stood near the ruined remains of an Abyss command structure destroyed too thoroughly for a repair team to restore during the battle. Celestara and Radiant cultivators crossed openly through the air above the district, moving between rooftops and elevated walkways the fortress should have controlled. Veridian teams emerged from one underground access point while another route behind them had already been sealed. Every direction showed evidence that the coalition was operating inside the stronghold as though it had possessed the ground long enough to reorganize around it.
The General extended his perception farther. Coalition presences continued beyond what he had expected to be the limit of the breach, spread across several streets and multiple districts rather than concentrated around one vulnerable point. The reports had described forces advancing from the western assembly area, which had encouraged the image of an enemy still expanding outward from one penetration. The penetration point was no longer anywhere near the front.
The army had passed it.
His attention shifted toward the stronger cultivators distributed through the advance. Lianhua stood among the Sword cultivators on the left, her blade carrying traces of controlled spatial distortion, while Yinxue held nearer the center and Yueru and Ziyue occupied separate positions from which demonic techniques had repeatedly been dismantled before completing. Xiangyin stood with her spear among soldiers already moving toward the next street, while alternating traces of cold and heat along the damaged paving revealed where Yanfei's Frostfire had passed.
Shuyue remained among the central mixed teams whose discipline showed none of the disorder he would have expected from soldiers trapped inside an Abyss stronghold. Liora moved behind the first lines with the Veridian healers, while farther right Tianlan stood with his spear beneath the circling forms of two Frost Rainbow Falcons. The General's perception continued across the front until it found the presence that tied the entire impossible situation together. Haotian stood within the forward movement.
There was no command platform around him and no dense bodyguard formation protecting the person responsible for the intrusion. He had not remained behind the army to issue orders while others carried the risk of the assault. He was simply there, moving with the frontline through a fortress whose exterior defenses had failed without ever being breached. That sight completed the realization the reports had been unable to provide.
This was not an infiltration that had grown larger than expected. Haotian had never entered merely to sabotage a gate and create a route through which an army outside could attack. He had carried the army with him. The exterior defenses had been bypassed entirely in the moment the Dao Palace of Creation opened inside the walls.
The General looked past Haotian toward the ruined infrastructure behind the coalition front, and its meaning changed with that understanding. The command structures had not been destroyed merely to create temporary confusion, the supply depots had not been burned to weaken one isolated sector, and the underground routes had not been collapsed merely to slow pursuit. The coalition was dismantling the fortress while occupying the ground it stripped away. Every loss removed another part of the stronghold's ability to recover.
The walls still stood. The gates remained closed. An army that should have been outside them was already several districts beyond them.
The Demon General had left the north-west junction believing he was moving toward the breach. Instead, he had walked deeper into the coalition offensive.
His remaining elites understood more slowly. Several adjusted their footing as their own perceptions spread through the district, weapons rising while one cultivator turned far enough to examine the road behind them and stopped treating it automatically as secure retreat. None panicked, because they were too experienced to waste time on disbelief once the situation became undeniable. Their formation changed instead.
The cultivators nearest the General spread wider, creating enough room for him to use his heavy weapon without catching them inside the first exchange. Others shifted toward positions from which they could intercept anyone attempting to reach his sides, while the rear maintained enough separation to preserve an escape route if the engagement turned against them. The response was controlled and practical. It also came too late to restore the districts already lost.
Coalition cultivators noticed them. The reaction moved through the nearby formations without a shouted warning, because the heavier cultivation pressure announced the arrival clearly enough. Ordinary fighters stopped pressing directly into the center of the General's approach, high-level cultivators adjusted toward the threat, and the frontline widened to create enough space for the stronger exchange that was about to begin. Elsewhere, the offensive continued.
Umbrel cultivators still moved through side routes. Pyrelith groups continued destroying structures already identified as useful to the demons, Veridian teams kept sealing passages no longer required, and mixed teams farther along the road continued forcing ordinary defenders away from neighboring streets. The entire army did not freeze merely because one powerful enemy finally reached Haotian. That difference made the General's arrival even worse than if thousands of cultivators had stopped to watch.
Haotian continued forward at an even pace. He did not rush to meet the General, because the opponent's presence did not suddenly make every other objective irrelevant, and neither did he retreat behind the coalition formation as though ordinary soldiers should absorb the first attack for him. He stepped beyond the nearest line only far enough to ensure that whatever came next would not fall directly upon lower-level cultivators. The damaged stone beneath his feet remained steady.
The distance between them still gave both men time to choose how the first exchange would begin. The Demon General tightened his grip around the handle of his heavy single-edged weapon, lowering his center of gravity while abyssal cultivation gathered through his body in a controlled flow. Haotian watched the shift in shoulders, the angle of the blade, and the distribution of weight through the demon's stance. The Eyes of the Universe did not need to reveal any hidden secret for him to understand the decision forming in front of him.
The General could not simply withdraw. If he abandoned the district without attempting to halt the coalition, the army would continue deeper while the remaining defenders received nothing more useful than the same broken reports that had brought him here. Reaching the battlefield and then turning away would concede not only the streets in front of him but the chance to carry accurate information back to the deeper command. He had to fight.
Haotian did not draw a weapon. His feet settled naturally against the fractured paving while his cultivation remained controlled within him, neither flaring outward nor announcing which part of his enormous martial library he intended to use first. Behind him, his wives remained distributed through the offensive instead of gathering into a protective ring, Tianlan continued holding the eastern side, and Liora remained with the wounded. Farther back, Xuanyin still directed the larger battlefield from the command formation while her unrepaired Dao Palace kept her from joining the frontline at full strength.
The stronghold walls remained visible in the distance beyond damaged buildings. Some of their formations still faced outward, and the gates remained barred against an enemy that had never needed to pass through them. Those defenses had once been the reason the Abyss Netherworld Sect could believe the fortress would hold against any direct assault. Now they stood behind a battle already taking place inside them.
The Demon General raised his weapon. Abyssal force gathered along the heavy blade while his elites spread farther around him and the coalition formations nearest the confrontation adjusted without abandoning their broader advance. Haotian remained still until the demon committed, watching the first change in weight pass through the General's stance and into the weapon. Then the attack began.
The heavy blade descended toward Haotian as, throughout the streets behind him, the coalition continued tearing the stronghold apart.
