Chapter 539 - Chapter 417

The last of the main combat formations emerged from the Dao Palace of Creation into a stronghold whose interior no longer resembled the ground Haotian had entered alone. When he had first opened the passage, the western assembly district had been enemy territory in every direction, a broad stone square chosen only because it offered enough room for thousands of cultivators to emerge without crushing their own formations together. Every road beyond that square had led deeper into Abyss territory, every nearby military structure had been occupied, and every rooftop, stairway, side passage, and elevated platform had given the defenders another possible angle from which to descend upon the coalition. The first waves had entered knowing that if they failed to push outward quickly enough, the very passage meant to bypass the fortress would become the center of a killing ground.

That danger had already receded behind them. The assembly district still carried the physical record of the first clashes, with paving stones broken beneath heavy techniques, dark armor scattered among bodies, and whole sections of military buildings opened where walls had collapsed into the streets. None of those things marked the frontline anymore, because the nearest fighting had moved several roads farther west and north while the coalition formations still near the passage now behaved as rear support rather than defenders of a desperate foothold. The difference could be heard before it was fully seen, for the sounds reaching the square no longer came from one compressed struggle but from separate engagements spreading deeper through the stronghold.

The final formations crossed from Creation without stopping to look around. Twelve-person mixed teams reassembled almost as soon as their feet touched the stone, two cultivators from Blue Sphere joining two from Pyrelith, two from Veridian Prime, two from Umbrel Spire, two from Celestara, and two from Marephoros. Months of drills and battles had reduced the awkwardness that once came from forcing six different cultivation traditions into one unit, and the cultivators entering now no longer needed to consciously remind themselves what every pair contributed. They simply found their places and moved toward the roads already assigned to them.

Blue Sphere members formed the stable core around which the others adjusted, while Pyrelith provided the direct destructive force needed whenever dense formations or hardened structures had to be broken quickly. Veridian Prime carried Life, Wood, recovery, and terrain control, Umbrel Spire supplied concealment and interception through routes too narrow or dangerous for ordinary formations, Marephoros shaped flow and pressure through congested ground, and Celestara filled the spaces above and between them with its Light, Shadow, and mobility. Those differences no longer pulled the teams apart, because each world had learned when to step forward and when to leave room for another. The result was not perfect uniformity but a structure built around the fact that they were different.

The last teams joined the larger formations waiting beyond the passage and flowed toward the western and northern roads. Several groups disappeared between damaged military buildings as they followed paths secured by earlier waves, while others moved through the center of the district toward sectors whose officers had already requested additional strength. No one lingered around the opening waiting for Haotian to tell them where to stand, because the coalition had been designed precisely to avoid turning one man into the mind of an entire army. By the time the final frontline cultivators crossed, the square had become a place people moved through rather than a place anyone expected to defend as the center of the battle.

Haotian remained beside the passage until he was certain the primary assault body had entered. Only then did he allow part of his awareness to turn inward toward the Dao Palace of Creation, where the enormous pressure of the staging areas had already eased. The thousands of cultivators who had crowded there before the assault were gone, leaving healers, replacement groups, formation specialists, and organized supplies behind in spaces prepared for their second purpose. What remained inside Creation no longer represented the army waiting to attack but the support structure that would keep the army functioning after the first surge.

The healers occupied treatment zones separated far enough from one another that wounded cultivators could be carried inside without creating another bottleneck. Replacement formations remained grouped according to legion and assignment instead of clustering uselessly near the opening, while specialists waited beside equipment that might become necessary if the coalition encountered defensive systems Haotian had failed to identify during his infiltration. Medicine, spirit resources, weapons, and emergency materials had been sorted beforehand so that attendants would not waste time searching through unrelated stores while injured cultivators bled in front of them. Everything inside Creation had been arranged around the expectation that the stronghold fight would continue long after the initial passage ceased carrying legions.

The main army was inside now, and there was no longer a reason to sustain an opening wide enough for entire formations to cross side by side. Haotian raised one hand toward the spatial boundary and allowed the connection to begin contracting under his control, following the change through the Dao Palace of the Universe while Creation maintained the inner side. The edges did not snap together like a gate being slammed shut, because forcing such a large connection to close abruptly would serve no purpose beyond creating unnecessary instability. Space folded gradually, the width shrinking section by section as the pressure required to sustain it diminished.

Haotian did not close the passage completely. Wounded cultivators still needed a protected route into Creation, replacement squads needed a way to reinforce the advancing lines, and specialists or supplies might still have to emerge depending on what the deeper districts revealed. He continued reducing the opening until several injured cultivators could be carried through abreast and a replacement squad could cross without being trapped in a vulnerable single-file line. Anything larger would only consume attention that might become more valuable once the surviving Demon Generals entered the battle.

The smaller connection settled into stability. Creation remained available behind the coalition, but it no longer demanded the same portion of Haotian's concentration or visually dominated the entire assembly district. More importantly, the passage no longer needed to define the battlefield around it, because the farther the offensive advanced, the less reason the demons would have to believe that one location remained the heart of everything. If the coalition continued building its entire defense around the opening, then the strength gathered there would eventually reveal what the demons had not yet fully understood.

Haotian had not bypassed the stronghold walls merely to create another fixed position that had to be defended at any cost. If enough troops remained clustered around the assembly district, the surviving Abyss commanders would eventually identify its importance and concentrate every available formation toward it until the battle became a contest over one square of stone. The entire advantage of his infiltration lay in refusing to let the defenders determine where the coalition had to fight. The front therefore needed to keep moving until the passage became little more than a protected route buried deep behind the actual battle.

Xuanyin had already shifted the command formation with the same understanding. The main battlefield map no longer stood beside the passage but farther south within the district, away from the movement of wounded cultivators and replacement teams, where communication officers surrounded it and adjusted its markings almost continuously. The map still contained the geometry Haotian had memorized during infiltration, yet those routes no longer represented a plan that could simply be followed without change. Every new report transformed part of the stronghold from prediction into reality.

One street Haotian had marked as clear now carried active resistance, while another had been crossed out after a damaged building narrowed the road too much for a full formation to pass safely. Several side routes that had seemed unimportant during infiltration had become valuable because Umbrel teams controlled them, and an underground passage discovered after the assault began now extended beneath part of the western district as far as Veridian scouts had confirmed. Markers for coalition control, contested ground, enemy movement, and damaged infrastructure shifted constantly across the map. Xuanyin worked within that changing picture rather than trying to force the battle back into the shape prepared before it started.

From a distance, little about her body revealed the severity of what she had once suffered. She could stand without assistance, move around the command position without visible pain, and follow incoming reports without the exhaustion that had once accompanied even small attempts to sit upright. Her physical recovery was real, and the months of weakness that followed her sacrifice had finally released their hold on her body. Haotian nevertheless knew better than to mistake healing flesh and meridians for restoration of everything that had been broken.

Her Dao Palace remained damaged. Light had not become foreign to her, Shadow still answered, and her understanding of Yin and Yang, Reflection, and the corrected Shadow Sect arts remained part of the cultivation she had spent years building. None of that changed the fact that the foundation meant to support those paths at her current level had never been reconstructed. Until Alter awakened and repaired what had been lost, every major expenditure still demanded restraint that would not have been necessary before her sacrifice.

Xuanyin could fight if the battlefield reached her. She could defend herself, kill ordinary enemies, and use the martial understanding that had survived the destruction of her Palace, but she could not release cultivation continuously as though the shattered foundation no longer mattered. Haotian saw no reason to force that burden upon her when the command position allowed her to influence the battle far more efficiently than one additional frontline combatant could. One correctly redirected formation could preserve dozens of cultivators, while one warning delivered before a reserve group entered the wrong street could prevent an entire local collapse.

Haotian allowed his perception to widen beyond the command district. The Dao Palace of the Universe extended his awareness through the surrounding stronghold without being driven recklessly toward the deepest concentrations of demonic power, because he did not need to challenge every powerful presence simply to know that it existed. Movement told him more about the defenders' condition than raw cultivation pressure ever could. The fortress was reacting everywhere, but those reactions did not yet belong to one coherent response.

Western wall units were abandoning positions they had spent days preparing because reports of fighting behind them had become impossible to dismiss. Northern reserves were changing direction through roads intended to carry them toward threatened gates, while barracks deeper inside were emptying as fresh soldiers received wildly different descriptions of what had happened. Some formation operators remained at defenses pointed outward because no updated orders had reached them at all. The stronghold was moving, but every section appeared to be moving according to a different understanding of where the battle actually was.

The defenders were not incompetent. They were responding to what they knew, and that was precisely the weakness the coalition had created by appearing inside a fortress whose entire military structure had been designed around threats approaching from outside. A commander could make a perfectly sensible decision based upon the report in front of him and still send his soldiers directly into coalition-held streets because the report described a battlefield that had already changed. Information needed time to travel, while the coalition's advance was consuming ground faster than the Abyss command structure could redraw its own understanding.

The Abyss Netherworld Sect therefore knew that something serious had happened without yet understanding the full shape of it. Haotian knew that advantage would not last indefinitely, because surviving commanders would eventually compare reports, identify patterns, and begin recognizing that the army was no longer concentrated around one breach. The Demon Generals would stop responding individually once they understood the scale of the intrusion, and the central leadership would begin gathering what remained into a more deliberate counterattack. That moment had not arrived yet, and Haotian intended to make every breath before it as costly as possible.

He left the reduced passage behind without returning to Xuanyin's map. The coalition already possessed officers, team leaders, formation commanders, and legions capable of acting within the broader objective, and the entire system Alter had helped design would have been meaningless if every decision still needed Haotian's approval. His role was no longer to stand behind everyone and direct individual movements. His place had shifted to the front, where the strongest resistance would eventually appear.

His wives were already advancing. Lianhua, Yinxue, Yueru, Ziyue, Xiangyin, Shuyue, and Yanfei had remained close enough to the assembly district during the deployment to return quickly if the demons somehow drove toward Creation, but several layers of coalition forces now occupied the surrounding streets and the final assault formations were already inside. There was no reason to keep seven Lesser Immortal Lords near the rear merely because they had crossed through the passage with the first waves. They spread naturally through the offensive instead of gathering around Haotian and weakening every other section by concentrating too much strength in one place.

Liora advanced with the Veridian combat healers, remaining close enough to the front that wounded cultivators would not have to travel far before receiving stabilization. Tianlan stayed farther east with the high-level response group and the two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons, while the third remained with the healers because unfinished recovery mattered more than whatever additional strength it might contribute for a few exchanges. Haotian crossed the western edge of the assembly district and entered streets where the evidence of recent fighting became heavier with every turn. Freshly damaged buildings, demonic bodies, broken weapons, and coalition formations moving forward rather than backward all marked the direction of the advancing front.

Ahead, the road widened enough for him to see another demonic formation turning into it from the direction of the western walls. The troops still marched in disciplined ranks, their weapons ready, officers distributed throughout the column, and heavier cultivators protected closer to the center where they could be brought forward once resistance appeared. Nothing about their formation suggested panic or collapse. They were trained soldiers following orders that had already become outdated.

The first ranks turned into the road and found coalition cultivators already occupying it. Their pace failed almost simultaneously, but the soldiers behind them continued moving because they had not yet seen what stopped the front, causing armor to strike armor as the column compressed against itself. Officers reacted quickly, raising weapons and drawing cultivation while trying to transform the marching column into a combat formation without first retreating to create room. The coalition gave them none.

Blue Sphere cultivators hit the front before that transformation finished. They advanced as a unit, forcing the leading demons backward into men already pressed too closely behind them and denying the formation the space required for its heavier techniques. The demons attempted to widen toward surrounding alleys and damaged structures, which was the correct response if their numbers were going to matter. Umbrel Spire had already anticipated the movement.

Shadow cultivators slipped away from the road through narrow spaces between military buildings and crossed behind damaged walls that blocked them from the demons' immediate view. They did not need spectacular concealment when the stronghold's own architecture provided shadows, side passages, collapsed masonry, and narrow routes through which a compact team could move faster than a marching formation. By the time the rear ranks understood that the front had been stopped, Umbrel fighters already occupied the cleanest escape paths. The first demons trying to spread through those routes found blades waiting inside them.

Marephoros cultivators shaped the remaining exits without flooding the street indiscriminately. Water and pressure gathered low against the paving, changing resistance beneath demonic movements just enough to turn a clean sidestep into a delay or a leap into a bad landing. A soldier who should have reached a doorway in two strides required three, while another who tried clearing a damaged wall found the pressure beneath him shifting at the moment his body left the ground. Those small failures pushed more bodies toward the center, where the column had already begun choking upon its own density.

The company tightened until broad weapons lost room and several cultivators capable of wide techniques found allies occupying every direction around them. Pyrelith waited until the compression reached the point where destruction would strike more enemies than empty street, then Fire and Metal entered the center together. The first impact fractured paving beneath the soldiers and drove pieces of armor inward, while Metal force traveled through weapons and plates already pressed too close to one another. Fire reached the openings created by that damage and spread heat through bodies that no longer possessed enough space to escape.

The company did not disappear under one attack. Most of the demons remained alive after the first Pyrelith strike, but the military structure connecting them had been broken far more effectively than if every man had simply suffered a wound. The front remained locked against Blue Sphere cultivators, the center became a confusion of damaged equipment and injured soldiers, and the rear found Umbrel forces controlling the easiest routes out. Officers could still command whoever remained close enough to hear them, but commands no longer traveled cleanly through the entire column.

What entered the road as one disciplined company became several smaller battles. One group attempted to force its way through a building, another tried reaching a side passage, and another simply continued fighting the Blue Sphere line because no new instruction reached it. Marephoros kept shaping where those groups could move, while Pyrelith struck only when another dense concentration formed rather than wasting destructive techniques against scattered individuals. The coalition did not need Haotian to enter and personally erase the company, because once the formation ceased functioning, the ordinary mixed teams already had enough to finish it.

Farther north, another demonic unit followed a different set of outdated orders along a road that appeared uncontested. No coalition formation blocked the route ahead, no large technique betrayed an ambush, and the soldiers maintained their pace over a section of paving beneath which Veridian cultivators had already weakened the support structure. The first ranks crossed safely, then the second, while the Veridian teams below waited for the center of the formation to occupy the span. Roots had temporarily preserved several damaged supports so that the road would fail when the cultivators beneath it chose rather than at the first sign of weight.

Only when enough soldiers moved above did the Wood cultivation withdraw. Stone cracked, the road sagged, and the center of the formation dropped before the men above understood what had happened beneath their feet. Some reacted quickly enough to leap, others collided with the soldiers beside them, and several caught the edges of the collapse only to lose their grip when the remaining paving sheared away. Dust filled the street as the forward ranks surged beyond the gap and the rear halted before entering it.

The collapse did not need to kill the entire formation. Its purpose was separation, and the broken road immediately divided the unit into two bodies whose officers could no longer coordinate as though they occupied the same ground. Coalition forces struck both halves before either side could reorganize, while demons trying to leap the gap exposed themselves in the air and those descending through the collapse encountered Veridian cultivators emerging from prepared exits. One organized enemy formation had become two smaller problems, and the coalition treated them accordingly.

Across the stronghold, the same kind of failure multiplied. Reinforcement groups arrived at positions the coalition had already passed, defenders left exterior walls only to enter internal roads that had changed hands during their march, and units sent to suppress infiltrators encountered entire coalition formations spread through districts that should never have been threatened from within. The Abyss troops still fought with discipline once they reached an enemy they could see, but the roads carrying them toward those fights had become traps shaped by information that arrived too late. Every local commander was solving a problem that might already have changed somewhere beyond his view.

The coalition operated differently because the mixed teams did not need to understand the entire fortress before making small decisions. Blue Sphere cultivators knew when to hold long enough for Pyrelith to strike, Umbrel teams recognized which side routes would place them behind organized retreats, Veridian cultivators understood when terrain mattered more than direct destruction, and Marephoros shaped movement without waiting for someone several districts away to approve every adjustment. The larger objective remained coordinated while the smaller decisions happened at the place where the fighting actually changed. That difference allowed the offensive to move faster than the stronghold's understanding of it.

Haotian saw the western company behind him cease resisting as one body while coalition formations were already passing around the remaining pockets. Ahead, the road widened into the western military district, where the quality of the resistance changed enough that the mixed teams slowed only briefly to adjust their spacing. The demons waiting there had not marched accidentally into coalition-held ground, because hundreds had already established positions around a cluster of military buildings and built overlapping defensive structures across the road. These soldiers knew an enemy was coming.

Their first line possessed enough room to use weapons properly, formation guards stood behind it, and officers occupied positions from which they could observe several parts of the battlefield at once. Many bore evidence of earlier fighting, with repaired armor, chipped weapons, and fresh bandaging visible beneath damaged protective gear. They were wall veterans, reserve officers, formation guards, and soldiers experienced enough not to abandon a line simply because stronger cultivators approached. Most were cannon fodder only in comparison with the family moving toward them, while against ordinary coalition teams their numbers and preparation still mattered.

Seven familiar presences spread across the front. Lianhua moved toward the section where the demonic defensive layers overlapped most heavily, Yueru and Ziyue positioned themselves where their Sword paths could exploit whatever openings appeared, and Xiangyin entered a broader section of road where her spear could develop its reach without being trapped between allies. Yanfei stayed close enough to support that penetration with Frostfire, while Shuyue remained among the mixed formations and Yinxue moved toward the place where several defensive groups were attempting to connect into one larger structure. None of them gathered before attacking.

Lianhua moved first. Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her toward the line before its outer layers fully settled, not through crude speed but through corrected transitions that allowed one direction to become another without wasting the momentum already built. Her first movement drew the defenders toward the center, then her weight shifted and the force carried naturally into another angle before the attacks prepared for the original path could reach her. A demonic blade crossed behind her while a second technique struck the space where she would have arrived if the old flaws in the art still existed.

Her sword cleared its sheath as she entered the opening. The corrected Voidpierce Sword Sutra shaped Space along the edge without tearing open the street around her, because the art did not require uncontrolled distortion to defeat the defenses in front of her. A demon raised a weapon and placed another barrier a short distance behind it, expecting the first obstruction to slow Lianhua's sword long enough for the second to receive whatever force remained. Steel met steel, but the relationship of distance behind the weapon changed before the barrier could function as intended.

Lianhua's sword crossed the remaining separation too quickly for the secondary defense to compensate. The weapon split, the barrier failed behind it, and the cultivator holding both protections fell before the formation around him fully understood where the weakness had begun. Because several demons had connected their techniques into the same layered structure, the collapse did not remain isolated. One neighboring barrier pulled too much support toward the broken point while another weakened along its lower edge, creating openings born from the formation's own effort to preserve itself.

Yueru entered one of those openings. A demonic officer several rows behind the front had already begun constructing an enormous abyssal blade above the formation, its size drawing energy from several supporting streams that converged into one growing weapon. Yueru ignored the spectacle and watched the relationships beneath it, waiting until the supporting flows became dependent enough upon one another that breaking the correct point would cause the entire technique to fail. Her sword moved only once.

She did not cut the broad body of the abyssal blade. The strike passed through the convergence that held the supporting streams together, and the enormous technique lost cohesion before it could descend. Its outer edge fragmented first, the center failed a heartbeat later, and dark energy dispersed over the battlefield without forcing the coalition to spend strength defending against the completed attack. The officer tried to rebuild, but Yueru had already shifted her attention toward another forming weakness.

Ziyue moved along the wider flank, where coalition cultivators gave her enough room to use a broader Sword technique without trapping allies inside it. The Dao Palace of the Sword remained anchored within her dantian, unseen by the defenders, yet its stability entered the attack before the blade began to move. Dao of the Sword — Tenfold Elements, Severing Arc swept through the packed ranks. The technique struck not as one undifferentiated wave but as several elemental relationships moving through the same severing force.

Metal hardened the cutting edge against physical defenses, Wind carried it farther through the road without letting its power disperse, and Lightning entered active inscriptions just as the demons attempted to reinforce them. Fire followed into fractures opened by the severing force, then Ice reached armor before the heated material could stabilize, forcing plates through conflicting stresses that widened every weakness already created. Barriers bent, weapons vibrated hard enough to numb hands, and several defensive inscriptions failed as the surfaces carrying them distorted. The first ranks tried to hold while enough of the soldiers behind them moved away from the arc that the careful spacing of the formation began to fail.

Xiangyin entered the opening before the officers could repair it. Her spear reached farther than the weapons around her, but she did not treat that reach as an excuse to simply stab from safety, because the strength of her path lay in deciding where distance began and ended around the weapon. The first defender misjudged the thrust and tried to intercept too late, allowing the spearhead to pass through his chest and continue far enough to strike the cultivator behind him. Xiangyin withdrew as attacks converged from both sides.

The shaft rotated between those attacks, redirecting one blade away from her shoulder and knocking the second downward while the same movement carried naturally into her next step. An officer ahead crossed both arms and condensed abyssal energy into a dense barrier when Xiangyin thrust toward his chest. The spearhead stopped against the defense, and for a moment the officer lowered his stance as though the exchange had become a contest of raw strength. Xiangyin changed the nature of that contest before he could reinforce it further.

The pressure behind her thrust narrowed toward the point already touching the barrier. Instead of spreading across the surface, the force concentrated until the defense bent inward around the spearhead and a small crack appeared at the center. The officer shifted additional cultivation toward the damaged section, but the weakness widened faster than the formation could compensate. Xiangyin drove through the broken point and buried the spear in his chest before pulling it free as nearby demons closed around her.

Frost spread across the paving before they reached her. Yanfei had remained close enough to support Xiangyin without entering the same opening, and Frostfire flowed around the spear wielder's position rather than forcing her to retreat from it. Cold climbed across demonic armor, stiffening joints and contracting metal that had already been stressed by earlier attacks. Fire followed through the same space before the material could recover.

The sudden expansion widened cracks along plates and broke fastenings that had survived Ziyue's Severing Arc. Defensive inscriptions warped as the metal carrying them changed shape, while several demons found their movement slowed by frozen joints only to feel heat strike before they could restore circulation. Xiangyin turned through the opening Yanfei created and attacked again. The two women did not need to pause and coordinate verbally because each had already learned how the other shaped the space around her technique.

The demons answered with more than weapons. Killing intent and abyssal pressure rolled across the road, feeding fear, aggression, and exhaustion already present in the ordinary coalition cultivators behind Haotian's family. A Blue Sphere fighter tightened his grip until tension in his forearms began slowing the next strike, a Pyrelith cultivator drew too much Fire into an attack that would have spread dangerously through nearby allies, and another soldier took half a step backward before the enemy physically reached him. The pressure magnified emotion until the body began reacting before judgment could catch up.

Shuyue felt the shift through the formation around her. Her Dao Palace of Virtues remained anchored within her dantian, but the stability of that path moved through her cultivation and into the people fighting nearby. She did not erase fear or anger, because either could still warn a cultivator that something dangerous stood in front of him, but she interrupted the point at which those emotions stopped serving awareness and began controlling action. The change appeared quietly through dozens of small corrections.

Breathing steadied. The Blue Sphere fighter loosened his hands enough for his weapon to move properly, the Pyrelith cultivator compressed the Fire before releasing it, and the man who had stepped backward recovered his stance before the movement opened a gap beside him. The abyssal pressure remained and the demons remained dangerous, but the coalition stopped allowing those facts to dictate reckless decisions. Shuyue advanced with them and placed her own attack through an opening created by the mixed teams rather than replacing everyone around her with a broad display of power.

Yinxue fought farther along the same line where the demons repeatedly attempted to rebuild. Three defensive barriers overlapped between retreating groups, the first meant to absorb direct impact, the second angled to compensate when the outer layer shifted, and the third protecting the cultivators maintaining the entire structure. Yinxue struck the outer shield without trying to destroy it. The barrier moved exactly as she expected.

Her second cut entered the space exposed by that movement. A demon maintaining the inner layer redirected cultivation toward the threatened section, but Yinxue's third strike reached him before his correction finished. The inner support collapsed, the middle barrier lost the structure required to remain stable, and Sword cultivators behind Yinxue surged through the opening before another defensive line could replace it. Yinxue moved with them rather than racing so far ahead that the formation behind her could no longer use what she created.

Haotian watched the seven women long enough to understand how much their recent breakthroughs had changed the way they fought. The difference was not merely that their reserves were larger or their attacks stronger, because each of them now possessed enough control to use less power more effectively. Lianhua shaped Space only where necessary, Yueru dismantled the structure beneath a technique rather than confronting its entire body, and Ziyue could spread the Tenfold Elements without allowing the attack to become indiscriminate. Their old arts had matured with them instead of being replaced by larger versions of the same thing.

Xiangyin turned every shift in enemy spacing into another path for her spear, while Yanfei shaped Frostfire around that movement instead of forcing everyone nearby to adapt to her. Shuyue supported discipline without suppressing the emotions that allowed people to recognize danger, and Yinxue attacked the process through which the enemy recovered rather than simply cutting the nearest body. Haotian no longer needed to monitor them as though a single mistake might require his immediate intervention. The realization did not slow him, because it freed him to enter the battle without carrying responsibility for every movement around him.

Cloud-Sundering Steps took him through the left side of the demonic formation. A heavily armored cultivator recognized him and attacked with a broad weapon whose descending strike carried enough raw force that meeting it directly would accomplish nothing beyond wasting strength. Haotian committed toward the blow long enough to make the demon add more weight to the descent, then shifted before impact and allowed the corrected footwork to carry the momentum sideways. The weapon shattered stone where he had been.

The demon recovered faster than an ordinary soldier and turned with the impact. Haotian changed arts before the enemy fully tracked his new position, allowing Thousand Mirage Steps to alter the rhythm of his movement and create several plausible continuations from the same motion. The demon followed the most obvious one. His weapon struck empty air.

Haotian stood beside his exposed ribs. Fist of Ruin landed beneath the armor, its destructive force held tightly enough that it did not crater the surrounding road or threaten coalition cultivators only a short distance away. Metal dented while the body beneath it absorbed the real damage, ribs collapsing as the force drove inward through flesh and organs rather than exploding outward. The demon folded before his knees reached the paving.

Another enemy had already retreated enough to gather a ranged technique between both hands. This problem did not require unpredictable angles, so Haotian changed movement again and used Heaven-Piercer Step to erase the distance before the attack stabilized. The demon abandoned the unfinished technique and raised both arms beneath layered defensive energy. Seraph Shatter Palm struck before the new protection fully settled.

The outer layer fractured. Force traveled through the defending arms into the chest, disrupting the circulation supporting both the barrier and the abandoned ranged attack. The demon flew backward into the soldiers behind him, and Haotian turned before the body landed because another threat had already entered his perception. An abyssal chain curved toward him from an elevated platform along one of the military buildings.

The links were formed from condensed energy rather than physical metal, yet each section depended upon its neighbors to redistribute tension as the chain changed direction. Through the Dao Palace of the Universe, Haotian saw the relationship holding the technique together and touched that balance rather than confronting the whole attack through force. One section began carrying more tension than intended, the adjoining link weakened, and the imbalance propagated through the structure. The chain lost its ability to continue curving and collapsed before reaching him.
