Chapter 75 - (S2) Chapter 20 - The Forbidden Threshold

The Uninvited Shadow

The air in the Fox Realm, once sweet with the scent of pink blossoms and the promise of a new beginning, suddenly curdled. A chilling, unnatural wind swept through the wedding venue, extinguishing the ceremonial lanterns. From the center of the courtyard, a thick, milky white fog began to coalesce, swirling like a ghostly whirlpool.

The guests fell silent. The joyous music died in the throats of the musicians. Justin's grip on Jade's waist tightened, his protective instincts flaring as he stepped half a pace in front of her, his golden eyes narrowing into lethal slits.

From the heart of the mist, a silhouette emerged—graceful, cold, and unmistakably celestial. Merin stepped onto the red carpet, her silken white robes fluttering as if untouched by the gravity of the Demon Realm.

A dozen royal guards surged forward, their obsidian swords singing as they pointed the sharp tips at Merin's throat. The atmosphere was a powder keg, ready to ignite at the slightest breath.

Merin didn't flinch. She looked at the blades with a mocking, tilted head and chuckled, the sound like ice cubes rattling in a glass. "Is this the hospitality of the Fox Prince? Don't you invite your old friends to your wedding, Justin?"

Jade looked at Merin, her heart sinking. The memory of the Dark Cloud Zone, the lightning, and the betrayal of the Heaven Realm rushed back, making her breath come in shallow gasps.

Justin's voice was like a subterranean landslide—deep, cold, and heavy. "Friend?" He let out a dark, hollow chuckle that sent shivers down the spines of the guests. "Do you truly think we are friends after what your brother and your king did to my Queen in the Heaven Realm?"

Merin's eyes flickered to Jade, a glint of something unreadable passing through them. "Don't worry," she said smoothly, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I still consider you a friend, Justin. Regardless of the politics of our fathers."

She reached into her sleeve and produced the Celestial Orb—the glowing, golden sphere Justin had gifted her months ago. It was the key that had allowed her to pierce the ancient barriers of the Fox Realm.

Justin didn't hesitate. He reached out his hand, and with a sharp tug of his will, the orb flew across the space, landing firmly in his palm. He looked at it for a moment before his fingers closed around it, crushing the light within until the orb went dark and lifeless.

He smirked, a dangerous, jagged expression. "A token of friendship is for those who value it. Now onwards, Merin, you will find no back door into my kingdom. The seals are closed to you."

Merin's jaw tightened, a flash of genuine anger marring her perfect features, but she quickly masked it with a sharp, practiced smile.

"Drop your swords," Justin ordered his guards, his voice ringing through the courtyard. "Treat the guest well. She says she came here as a friend, and I shall hold her to that word. She will stay for two days to witness our festivities, and then she will leave. Forever."

Merin chuckled softly, tucking her hands back into her long sleeves. "Of course. Two days is more than enough time to... celebrate."

As she turned to follow the attendants toward the guest wing, Merin's hand surreptitiously pressed against a hidden token tucked deep within the folds of her hanfu. It pulsed with a faint, rhythmic red glow—a signal to Ryan and the Heavens that the intruder was inside the nest.

The wedding continued, but the magic had shifted. The pink flowers still fell, but to Jade, they looked like drops of fading blood. She stood beside Justin, her hand trembling in his. The warmth of his touch, which had felt like a sanctuary moments ago, now felt like a target.

She looked at the spot where Merin had stood, a deep, instinctual dread settling in her marrow. Five years he waited for me, Jade thought, her eyes tracing the sharp, beautiful profile of her new husband. And now that he finally has me, the world is coming to tear us apart.

Justin sensed her distress. He leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as the crowd began to cheer again. "Don't be restless, my heart," he whispered, his voice a low, fierce vow. "I am the King of this realm. No goddess or demon will take you from my side again. Trust me."

Jade looked into his eyes, trying to find the peace she had felt during their kiss, but her gaze kept drifting toward the shadows where Merin had disappeared. The mystery was no longer about who she was—it was about how long they could survive the truth.

Under the Crimson Moon

The night was a velvet tapestry woven with silver threads of starlight, the air in the Fox Realm still humming with the residual magic of the day's union. The pink blossoms had deepened to a romantic, dusky rose under the lunar glow.

The Secret Sanctuary

Justin led Jade through the labyrinthine pathways of the royal gardens, his large, warm hand draped gently over her eyes. Her red wedding hanfu, heavy with intricate gold embroidery, rustled against the grass like the beating of a butterfly's wings.

"Where are you taking me?" she whispered, her voice a mix of anticipation and lingering shivers from the day's events.

"Wait," Justin murmured, his breath warm against her ear. He stopped her at the edge of the royal pond, where the water was a perfect mirror for the full moon. He slowly withdrew his hand.

Jade gasped, her eyes widening as she took in the sight. He had arranged a private sanctuary. A small table and four carved chairs stood surrounded by a sea of glowing night-lilies. The pond's surface rippled with the reflection of the moon, and the air was thick with the scent of jasmine.

"Do you like it?" Justin asked, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register as he pulled out a chair for her.

"It's... it's beautiful," Jade breathed, sinking into the seat. She felt as though she were in a dream, the terror of Merin's arrival finally beginning to recede.

Justin sat opposite her, his movements fluid and regal. He poured a dark, fragrant wine into two jade cups, the liquid shimmering like liquid rubies. He handed one to her, and Jade took a small, hesitant sip. The heat of the wine blossomed in her chest.

"Justin," she said, her voice turning serious as she looked at him over the rim of the cup. "Why did you truly allow Merin to stay? After everything... she feels like a viper in our home."

Justin set his cup down, his expression casual but his eyes sharp. "Don't trouble your heart with her, Jade. My people are watching her every shadow. She cannot breathe without me knowing. If she has come for a reason, she will reveal it, and I will be ready."

"But still," Jade insisted, her brow furrowed. "If we don't watch her closely, we might miss her true intentions. She looked so... confident."

Justin reached across the table, his fingers lingering as he brushed a stray strand of hair away from her face. His touch was electric. "Are you truly going to spend our wedding night talking about other people?" he asked, a playful, predatory smirk tugging at his lips.

Jade felt the heat rise to her cheeks. She looked down, unable to meet his intense gaze, and instinctively moved around the table to lean against his chest. It was the only place she felt truly safe.

Justin wrapped a protective arm around her, pulling her closer into the warmth of his robes. Jade looked up at him, her chin resting on his chest.

"Mike told me everything," she whispered. "He told me you've loved me for five years. That you found my bangle at a mortal festival." She paused, her eyes searching his. "But I still can't understand it. How can someone love another person at first sight? You didn't even know my name then. You didn't know who I was."

Justin smiled, a rare, soft expression that reached his eyes. "What?"

"I mean it," Jade pressed. "It sounds like a fairy tale. You were a Prince, and I was just... me."

Justin didn't answer with words. He leaned down, his lips catching hers in a brief, sweet kiss that made her heart skip a beat. As she blinked in surprise, he pulled back just an inch.

"Do you have anything else to say?" he asked, his voice a husky challenge.

"I just—"

Before she could finish the sentence, he kissed her again, deeper this time, his hand cupping the back of her head to hold her to him. Jade's resistance melted completely. She let out a small, shaky breath and buried her face in the crook of his neck, her hands clutching his silken robes.

"You are right," Justin murmured, his voice vibrating against her skin. "I didn't know anything about you then. I didn't know your favorite flower, or how stubborn you could be, or the way you look when you're thinking too hard."

He tilted her face up, his thumb tracing her lower lip. "But when I saw you standing there at that stall, five years ago... my heart didn't need to know the details. It simply said, 'There she is. She is the one.'"

Jade's heart swelled with an overwhelming ache of affection. She didn't care about the prophecies, the demons, or the heavenly princesses anymore. She wrapped her arms around his waist, hugging him with everything she had.

Justin rested his chin on the top of her head, a triumphant, peaceful smile crossing his face as they sat together under the moon, two souls finally anchored in the middle of a rising storm.

The Shadow in the Ancestors' Hall

The morning in the Fox Realm arrived not with a harsh sun, but with a soft, ethereal mist that clung to the crimson eaves of the palace. The pink blossoms from the wedding day still carpeted the stone walkways, a fading reminder of the vows exchanged under the moonlight. Yet, beneath the beauty, a cold current of celestial ambition began to stir.

Merin glided through the eastern wing, her white silken robes barely making a sound against the polished floor. She paused before a massive, iron-bound door engraved with swirling fox tails and ancient runes. It was the Ancestors' Hall, a place where the very air felt heavy with the weight of a thousand years.

"I haven't seen this place before," she whispered, her eyes narrowing as she sensed a strange, pulsing light emanating from within. The White Globe of the Fox Ancestors, she thought. If the rumors are true, it holds the memories of the lineage.

She reached out a hand to push the heavy door, but a sharp, mocking voice sliced through the silence.

"Outsiders aren't allowed in there, Princess."

Merin turned to find Mike leaning against a nearby pillar, his arms crossed over his chest and a dangerous glint in his eyes.

"So, the legendary Fox treasures are hidden in here?" Merin smirked, her gaze lingering on the door.

Mike pushed off the pillar, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. "The Princess knows how to joke. It's just an ancestors' hall. Only those with the blood of the Fox can enter. As for the rest..." He stepped closer, leaning in to whisper into her ear, "Haven't you heard the rumors? The ancestors have a nasty habit of burning intruders alive before they can even scream."

Merin didn't flinch. She met his gaze with icy defiance. "I don't mind rumors, General. Rumors are rarely the truth."

With a sharp flick of her sleeves, she walked away, her head held high. Mike watched her go, his smile fading into a grim line. With a wave of his hand, he cast a shimmering golden seal over the entrance, causing the doorway to vanish into the wall itself. "Not today, Heaven-born," he muttered.

The Height of Desire

Inside the main palace, the atmosphere was far warmer. Jade was currently engaged in a battle with a massive porcelain vase set high atop a decorative shelf. She was trying to arrange a cluster of fresh lilies, but the shelf was just out of her reach.

She jumped once. Twice. On the third attempt, she felt herself suddenly hoisted into the air.

Jade gasped, looking down to find Justin holding her securely by the waist, lifting her as easily as a child. A soft, genuine smile broke across her face as she looked into his golden eyes.

"Aren't you supposed to be at the royal court?" she asked, her voice a playful lilt as she finally tucked the flowers into place.

"How could I leave my wife on our first morning together?" Justin replied, his voice a low rumble of affection.

As he slowly lowered her back to the floor, Jade's hands remained on his shoulders. Caught in a sudden burst of boldness, she leaned forward and pressed a lingering, tender kiss to his forehead.

Justin gasped, his eyes widening in genuine shock. He hadn't expected the shy, reserved Jade to initiate such a gesture. Jade pulled back, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. "There. Now you can go to your court."

Before she could turn away, Justin's hand shot out, pinning her against a nearby pillar. The air between them suddenly turned electric, the playful mood shifting into something much deeper and more intense.

"How dare you mock me?" he whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips.

"When did I mock you?" Jade breathed, her heart beginning to hammer against her ribs.

"Do you truly think you can escape me after a mere kiss on the forehead?" Justin leaned in, his shadow enveloping her. "You are far too innocent, Jade."

He didn't give her a chance to reply. He claimed her lips in an intense, demanding kiss that tasted of fire and long-awaited possession. Jade's head spun as she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as she returned the kiss with a fervor that surprised even herself. His hands slid down to her waist, gripping her with a desperate, crushing need.

When they finally broke apart, both were panting, their foreheads resting against each other. The silence of the hallway was filled only with the sound of their synchronized breathing.

Justin looked into her eyes, his expression turning mockingly stern as a smirk tugged at his lips. "And another thing... how dare you fall asleep so early on our wedding night?"

Jade stunned, her face turning a deep, vivid crimson. She looked away, an awkward, shy smile forming as she remembered her exhaustion from the wedding day.

Justin tilted her chin back up, his eyes burning with an unyielding promise. "Don't think that will happen again tonight, Jade."

Jade blushed furiously, a small, secret smile touching her lips as she leaned her head against his chest, finally feeling at home in the middle of the storm.
