The Whispers of the Valley
The Fox Realm was a place of impossible colors. The valley where Jade and Emily stood was a tapestry of shifting lavender and gold, the air humming with the scent of wild nectar and ancient magic. Far in the distance, a small, weathered hut sat nestled against the mountainside, a silent witness to the centuries of secrets held within these borders.
The Best Friend's Counsel
Jade stood amidst the waist-high flowers, her fingers dancing over the petals of a lunar lily. Her heart felt heavy, yet strangely light, as the echoes of Justin's confession on the Living Bridge played like a melody in her mind.
"So," Emily began, breaking the tranquil silence. "He actually said it? He confessed?"
Jade nodded slowly, plucking a stray flower and twirling it between her thumb and forefinger. "I think... I can feel that his feelings are true, Emily. It wasn't just words. The bridge... it didn't break."
Emily stood up, dusting off her skirts and turning to look at Jade with a sudden, uncharacteristic gravity. "But you've always said you don't love him. Listen to me, Jade—you can't marry someone just because they have feelings for you. A relationship like that is a hollow shell; it won't last forever. For a marriage to be truly happy, you have to give your heart back in return."
Jade looked up, her brow furrowed in genuine confusion. "But how do I know? How does someone know if they truly love another person?"
Emily let out a long, dramatic sigh. "Of course you don't know. You haven't received a single proposal until now. You're completely inexperienced in the ways of the heart."
Jade scoffed, a playful spark returning to her eyes. "What? You're telling me that as if you're some grand expert! You haven't been in love either!"
"Who said that?" Emily retorted, crossing her arms with a smirk. "I've received six... maybe eight love proposals back in the mortal realm. I've actually lost count."
Jade's jaw dropped. "What? Eight? And you never told your best friend?"
"How could I? I didn't like any of them," Emily said, waving a hand dismissively. "They were handsome enough, sure, but not my type."
Jade laughed, the sound bright against the mountain breeze. "Of course. Your standards are far too high for mere mortals. I should have known."
Emily's expression softened, and she reached out, grabbing both of Jade's hands in her own. Her voice became a gentle anchor. "Jade, don't do this for him. Only do it if you love him. If you do, I won't stop you—I'll be right there cheering. But you have to be sure."
"Then tell me," Jade asked, her voice a quiet plea. "How do I know if I love Justin?"
Emily began to walk down the narrow dirt path, and Jade followed, hanging on every word.
"Number one," Emily said, holding up a finger. "You think about him constantly. It doesn't matter if the thoughts are good or bad, or if you're annoyed by him. If his face is the first thing you see when you close your eyes and the last thing you see when you wake... that's the start."
Jade looked down at her feet, whispering a soft "Yes" to herself. She couldn't deny that the Fox Prince had colonized her every waking thought. "Next?"
"Number two," Emily continued. "You feel a physical ache—a deep worry or upset—if something happens to him. If the thought of him being hurt makes your own chest tighten."
Jade bit her lip. She remembered the sight of Justin on the bridge, the way he had looked when he surrendered his Fox Jade for the King. "I... I felt that too. Next?"
"Last, but certainly not least," Emily said, stopping and turning to face Jade with a knowing glint in her eyes. "The mind can lie, but the body never does. When he comes closer... in those intimate moments... do you feel butterflies in your stomach? Do you find yourself unable to pull away, even when you should? If you can't avoid falling into his orbit when he's near... then you're already gone, Jade."
Jade stood paralyzed. The memory of the kiss in the study, the way her blood had turned to liquid fire beneath his touch, rushed over her. "Yes," she breathed. "I felt it."
"I have one more question for you," Emily said, her voice serious. "What do you think of Justin as a person? Do you still fear him? Because if it's just fear, that isn't love."
Jade didn't have to think. "No," she said firmly. "I'm not afraid of him anymore. He is... terrific on the outside, and he's terrifying to his enemies, I know that. But to me? I've seen the real him. He isn't a bad person, Emily. He is someone who would do absolutely anything for the people on his side."
Emily smiled, a triumphant look on her face. "For you, Jade. He does it for you. You love him. Don't wait—marry him."
Jade smiled, the warmth spreading through her, but a shadow of doubt remained. "But... I still don't understand. How can someone like him—a Prince of the Fox Realm—fall in love with someone like me in such a short amount of time? It feels like a dream."
Suddenly, a shimmer of orange light flickered behind them. A tall, lean figure appeared in a swirl of foxfire. It was Mike, Justin's closest friend and general.
"Who said that?" Mike asked, a playful yet meaningful smile on his face. "Who told you he fell in love with you in a short period of time?"
Jade spun around, her eyes wide. "Mike? What do you mean?"
Mike stepped forward, looking out over the valley toward the small hut. "Justin has many secrets, Jade. But the greatest one is that he has been looking for you far longer than you've known him. His heart didn't find you in a few days—it has been waiting for you for lifetimes."
Emily jumped, her face turning a furious shade of red. "So you were eavesdropping? You overheard everything!"
Mike laughed, holding up his hands in defense. "I was merely passing by. You two aren't exactly quiet." He turned his gaze to Jade, his expression becoming uncharacteristically serious. "He has loved you for five years, Jade."
Jade's heart skipped a beat. "What? That's impossible. Don't lie to me."
"I don't lie about my Prince's heart," Mike said. He pointed to the Jade Bangle resting on Jade's wrist. "How did you get that back?"
"I... I lost it years ago," Jade whispered, touching the cool stone. "But I found it here, in the Fox Realm."
"Five years ago," Mike began, his voice dropping into a storytelling lilt, "we visited the mortal realm for the New Year. Justin saw you at a festival stall, buying ornaments with your friends. You didn't see him, but he couldn't take his eyes off you. When you moved on, you dropped that bangle. He picked it up and has kept it ever since."
Jade's eyes filled with tears. "He kept it... all this time?"
"I mocked him for it," Mike admitted with a soft smile. "I told him to just tell you, but he was afraid. He was afraid that if you knew he was a Nine-Tailed Fox, you would reject him. Every time we went back to the mortal realm, it was for you. He loves you so deeply that when you finally arrived here, he hid everyone's true identity just so you wouldn't be scared. He's harsh because he's terrified of losing you again."
The realization hit Jade like a tidal wave. All the coldness, the arrogance, and the possessive demands—it was all a shield for a heart that had been waiting for her in the shadows for half a decade.
"Where is he?" Jade asked, her voice cracking.
"The royal training grounds," Mike replied.
Jade didn't walk; she ran. She sprinted past the valley and through the palace corridors until she reached the dusty training arena. Justin stood there, his black hair dampened with sweat, his sword gleaming in the afternoon sun. He was walking toward the edge of the grounds as the other soldiers continued their drills.
Jade didn't wait. She lunged forward, grabbing the front of his silken hanfu and pulling him behind a massive stone pillar, hidden from the immediate view of the center court.
Before Justin could utter a word of confusion, Jade stood on her tiptoes and kissed him passionately.
Justin's eyes widened in total shock. His sword hand went limp. Jade was relentless, her kiss intense and filled with all the words she hadn't been able to say. Slowly, Justin's shock melted into a fierce hunger. He dropped his weapon, his hands moving to the back of her head to pull her even closer, returning the kiss with a desperate, wild passion.
In the background, a few soldiers noticed the movement behind the pillar. They shared knowing smiles and quietly returned to their practice, leaving their Prince to his long-awaited victory.
When they finally broke apart, both breathless, Justin's ears were tinged a deep, embarrassed red. Jade looked up at him, her eyes shining with certainty.
"Let's marry, Justin," she whispered.
Justin froze, his breath hitching. "Jade... do you mean—"
"I love you," she interrupted, throwing her arms around his neck and burying her face in his shoulder. "I love you so much."
At that moment, the white flowers on the ancient trees surrounding the arena began to shimmer. As if reacting to the joy of the Fox Prince, the white petals blushed into a vibrant, deep pink, raining down on them like a blessing.

The Vow of the Crimson Moon
The wedding was a sea of red and gold. The Fox Realm had never seen a celebration so grand. Jade and Justin walked hand in hand toward the ceremonial altar, both dressed in traditional red wedding hanfus embroidered with golden phoenixes and foxes.
Emily and Mike stood to the side, Emily wiping away happy tears while the old Fox Nanny beamed with pride.
As the procedures neared their end, the couple stood before the realm. They bowed to the ancestors, to their friends, and finally to each other. A maid approached with two cups of ceremonial wine. They drank, sealing their souls together.
Suddenly, Justin reached out and snatched the empty cup from Jade's hand, placing it on the tray. Before she could ask what he was doing, his arm snared her waist, pulling her flush against him. The crowd gasped in surprise.
Justin leaned down and kissed his bride—not the ceremonial peck expected, but a gentle, lingering, and deeply passionate kiss that told the world she belonged to him alone.
As the pink flowers continued to fall around them, Justin pulled back just enough to look into her eyes. His voice was low and solemn, carrying the weight of a king's decree.
"Don't worry, Jade," he whispered. "It is my wedding oath to you: I will find the one who killed your family. I will bring them to justice."
A single tear escaped Jade's eye as she smiled, hugging him with all her strength. Justin held her close, his eyes turning toward the horizon with a protective fire.
You are my everything, Jade, he thought. And the world will burn before I let anything hurt you again.
