The light in the sanctuary dome was soft—a pale warmth like candlelight, though no fire burned here. This place wasn't part of the empire's throne halls or command sanctums. It was somewhere quieter. Smaller. A place I had built for Elira when I first brought her here.
I stood by the door, one hand resting on the polished wood frame. My reflection trembled faintly in the crystal wall behind me. My hair fell gently across my forehead, a little messy from the wind outside. My heart beat too fast.
She was inside.
Waiting.
I had seen her many times since bringing her back. I had spoken with her, offered her tea, walked with her through the greenhouse corridors. But this was the first time we would speak like this—alone. As husband and wife.
She had always known only part of me.
But now… now I was different.
I knocked lightly.
"Elira?" My voice came out barely audible. "C-Can I… come in?"
A pause.
Then her voice, soft and warm, like the first touch of sunlight.
"Always."
I stepped in slowly.
The room smelled like jasmine tea and lavender oil. She sat by a window, a thick, pale-blue blanket wrapped around her legs, her long hair falling loosely down her back. Her violet eyes met mine, and her lips curled into a smile.
"Ren," she whispered, and my heart skipped.
"I—" I bowed slightly. "I wanted to check if you're comfortable. Is everything okay? I can fix anything if it's not—"
"Come here," she said gently.
I nodded, walking over with light steps, hands nervously folded again. I sat beside her on the soft bench.
She studied me. Not with suspicion. Not with fear. With… wonder.
"You're glowing again," she said.
"Gl-Glowing?"
She reached up, her fingertips brushing my cheek.
"Not with power. With gentleness."
My face turned bright red. "I-I'm sorry—"
"Don't apologize," she laughed. "Please never apologize for being so kind."
I looked down at my hands. "I didn't want you to be afraid of me. I… I didn't want anyone to be afraid of me anymore."
"I never was," she said. "Even when you were silent, cold, distant… I always saw this heart inside you. I just didn't know if you'd ever let it be free."
I glanced up, eyes wide. "You did?"
She nodded. "And now… here you are. The boy who says 'excuse me' to the wind when it changes direction."
"I-I only did that once—!" I covered my face. "I thought it was rude to interrupt the breeze—"
She leaned her head against mine, giggling. "You're unbelievable."
"I'm sorry…"
"Stop apologizing."
"O-Okay…"
She touched my hand and held it in both of hers.
"You've always been soft," she said. "But now you've become light. Gentle, warm, pure. I feel safe just sitting beside you."
I trembled a little.
"Elira…" I swallowed. "I'm… not very good at this."
"At what?"
"Being a husband. I don't know what to say. What to do. I get dizzy if someone holds my hand too long…"
She smiled. "Then let's go slow. At your pace."
I looked at her, full of gratitude. "Th-Thank you…"
There was a pause. Then she asked:
"Can I… tell you something?"
"Of course."
"I used to be afraid that one day, if I wasn't useful to you, you'd let me go."
My breath caught.
"I would never—!" I clutched her hand tightly. "You're important to me! I don't care about usefulness—I just want to make you smile—"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You really are different," she said. "No. You're more you than you've ever been."
We sat there in silence.
Then, softly, she whispered:
"Ren?"
"Yes?"
"Can I hug you?"
I nodded quickly. "P-Please…"
She wrapped her arms around me carefully, as if I might shatter. I leaned into her, my face against her shoulder. I felt her heartbeat. I let mine calm.
"You smell like starlight," she said.
"I-I used flower soap today…"
"I love it."
I smiled quietly.
"I… want to be good," I whispered. "To all of you. You deserve someone kind."
"You are kind," she said. "You're the kindest soul I've ever known."
I blushed so deeply I almost melted.
And in that quiet room, with her holding me like a treasure, I let myself rest.
For once, I didn't worry about being strong.
Only about being soft.
"I've always wanted this," Elira whispered, her fingers brushing against the back of my hand. "Not the power. Not the empire. Just… this. Just you."
I looked up, startled. "M-Me?"
She nodded, her eyes shimmering in the warm glow of the lanterns above. "You — as you are now. Kind. Gentle. Shy. Honest. You were never just my king, Ren. You were my wish."
I swallowed. I didn't know how to respond to something so… precious. My chest ached in the softest way, as if her words had wrapped themselves around my heart and asked it to bloom.
I lowered my gaze, flustered. "I… I'm still learning how to be with you."
"And I'll teach you," she said gently. "Not as a servant. Not even as a wife. Just as someone who loves you, and wants you to smile more often."
"I want that too," I whispered. "I want to be someone who makes you proud."
"You already are."
Her words curled around me like a lullaby.
Then she asked, teasingly, "By the way… is it true you told your mother and Astraea that kissing someone's hand could make them pregnant?"
My whole body stiffened. "I… I… th-that's because I didn't know!" I covered my face in horror. "It was Airi's fault! She asked me to kiss her hand and I—I panicked—!"
Elira burst into laughter, a bright, warm sound that filled the entire chamber with joy. "Oh, Ren. You really are too pure for this world."
"I was just being careful…" I muttered, hiding behind my hands.
"Don't worry," she said, leaning against me with a grin. "Next time someone asks for a kiss, just look confused. It's your most powerful weapon."
"That's not funny…" I whispered, my ears burning.
She reached over and softly poked my cheek. "It is a little funny."
I let out a tiny squeak.
Then she turned a bit more serious. "Ren… can I ask something personal?"
I nodded slowly.
"If one day I wanted to… to hold you longer, or to kiss your forehead… would that be okay?"
I turned so red I thought I might faint. "I… I—um—I…"
She smiled, placing a gentle hand on my chest. "It's okay. You don't have to answer now."
"I-It's not that I don't want to," I said quickly. "I just… I want to make sure everything I give you comes from the purest part of me."
Her eyes softened. "That's why I love you."
She held my hand a little tighter. "You have the heart of a boy untouched by cruelty, yet you carry the weight of countless worlds. That you can still smile like this, still blush… it means the universe didn't break you."
I looked at her.
"Elira… I want to protect your smile."
Her breath hitched.
"And I want to stay beside you," I whispered. "Not just as a ruler. Or as someone you follow. But as someone who listens when you feel small. Someone who brings you tea when you're tired. Someone who remembers to add honey because you don't like the bitterness."
She pulled me into a hug again.
"You remember that?"
"Of course," I said. "I remember everything about you."
We stayed like that a while. Two hearts pressed close under the soft artificial stars of the empire's dome. I rested my head on her shoulder, my fingers lightly tangled with hers.
Then she whispered, "Thank you… for coming back to me. To this version of you."
I smiled.
"I never left," I said. "You just waited long enough to see me again."
Later, when I stood at the threshold of her room, ready to return to the main palace, she called after me.
"Ren?"
I turned.
"If I ever want to sit with you like this again… would you come?"
I nodded, eyes wide. "Yes. Always."
Her smile was the kind of light no sun could match.
And as I left, my chest felt full.
Full of peace.
Full of her.
Full of something I never thought I could deserve:
Love, without fear.
