Jarl Balgruuf did not sugarcoat the truth, but he quelled the chaos with the raw strength of a Nordic Jarl. He announced that Ulfric Stormcloak had forced this war upon them by sending an ultimatum, but do not worry as Whiterun would not be standing alone. He formally declared that he had requested the full might of the Empire to help them in this dark hour, and that the Legion was already manning their gates.

For the vast majority of the city, particularly the Battle-Born clan and the wealthy merchants, the Jarl's words and his decisive course of action were met with profound relief and cheering.

But the political divide was damning in the city. Down in the Wind District, Vignar Gray-Mane and his fierce traditionalist family stood on their porches, their faces twisted in disgust and bitter fury. They did not cheer. They spat at the ground, cursing Balgruuf's name, loudly wishing that the Jarl had simply surrendered his pride and joined the Stormcloaks rather than invite the hated Imperial banners onto their sacred soil.

The inner of the city was fractured, but the walls were fortified.

Meanwhile, Aerion did not linger to manage the internal politics of the city. He had his own heavy assets to deploy.

After ensuring the legionnaires were settling into their defensive positions behind the outer walls, Aerion signaled to his group. They mounted their horses and rode swiftly back across the plains toward Tundra Homestead.

When they arrived, the estate was already operating at a fever pitch.

"Sinmir!" Aerion barked as he rode through the gates. "Mobilize the heavy mammoths!"

The mercenary captain roared orders, and the entire company rushed to the mammoth pens. It was a staggering effort in display. It took dozens of mercenaries, using heavy ropes, wooden pulleys, and sheer physical strength, to lift and secure the massive, interlocking steel plates onto the eleven towering beasts.

While the mercenaries struggled with the heavy armor, Aerion gathered J'zargo, Onmund, Brelyna, and Eirik in the center of the courtyard.

"We are turning this estate into a magical minefield," Aerion instructed the four young mages rapidly. "I want overlapping elemental traps laid in the tall grass completely surrounding the outer stone walls. Prioritize the approaches to the main gate and the mammoth pens."

The mages nodded, their hands already glowing.

For the next hour, they worked with terrifying efficiency. Aerion led them around the perimeter, casting highly volatile, glowing Fire Runes, Frost Runes, and Lightning Runes directly onto the dirt and stones. The magical traps flared brightly for a second before seamlessly fading into absolute invisibility, leaving the tall tundra grass looking completely undisturbed. Any Stormcloak raiding party attempting to flank the city and loot the homestead would be instantly, violently eradicated.

By the time the magical perimeter was fully established with the apprentices and Eirik empty their magicka while Aerion doesn't, the physical preparations were complete.

The heavy wooden gates of the mammoth pens swung open.

The ground physically shuddered as eleven fully grown, heavily armored mammoths lumbered out into the courtyard. The massive, segmented steel plates covering their flanks clanked ominously with every step. Their heavy iron tusk guards gleamed in the fading sunlight, transforming the docile giants into terrifying, apocalyptic engines of war.

The dominant alpha male let out a deafening, earth shattering roar, raising his armored trunk high into the air.

Aerion swung up into Revan's saddle, drawing his Ebony Greatsword.

"Move them out," Aerion commanded, his Animal Affinity guiding the massive herd smoothly out of the estate gates.

Aerion, Aeloria, Valdemar, Lydia, Jenassa, and Eisa rode at the front, leading the slow, thundering march of the armored beasts across the open plains.

They guided the massive herd directly toward the fortified defense lines to be stationed beside the outer walls of Whiterun.

As the legionnaires looked up from their barricades and saw eleven armored mammoths approaching to anchor their flanks, a massive, deafening cheer erupted from the Imperial ranks. The sheer, overwhelming psychological boost was undeniable.

Aerion halted his horse at the center of the group, the massive beasts forming an impenetrable wall of steel, fur, and ivory behind him.

The sun finally dipped below the horizon, plunging the Whiterun plains into the cold, tense shadows of twilight.

Aerion sat tall in the saddle, his golden eyes scanning the dark, empty eastern road, listening to the wind. The traps were set. His Legion unit was entrenched. The beasts were armored.

The twilight shadows were lengthening rapidly across the Whiterun plains, painting the sprawling tundra in deep, bruised hues of purple and indigo. The biting wind that swept down from the Throat of the World carried the sharp, metallic tang of cold iron and the musky, overpowering scent of massive beasts.

Aerion pulled back gently on Revan's reins, bringing the massive warhorse to a smooth halt just inside the reinforced perimeter of the outer wall. Aeloria, Valdemar, Lydia, Jenassa, and Eisa followed his lead, dismounting in unison.

The outer courtyard of the city, normally a staging ground for merchant caravans, had been entirely transformed. It was now a hardened military encampment. Aerion handed Revan's reins to a waiting legionnaire, instructing the soldier to see the horses stabled securely alongside the mounts brought from Tundra Homestead. They would need their beasts rested and ready, cavalry charges were useless against a fortified line, but invaluable for running down routed enemies.

With his mount secured, Aerion turned his attention to the true vanguard of his defensive line.

He walked slowly toward the temporary, heavy timber pens that had been hastily erected to hold the mammoth herd. The ground shuddered slightly with their restless shifting. The eleven massive animals were a terrifying sight in the dimming light, their shaggy fur completely obscured by the interlocking plates of custom forged steel. The heavy iron tusk sleeves glinted ominously, turning their natural weapons into armor piercing siege rams.

Aerion approached the largest of the herd, the scarred, dominant alpha male.

The beast let out a low, rumbling huff, its breath pluming in the cold air. Because of Aerion's max level Animal Affinity skill, the mammoth did not view the towering, armored High Elf as a threat, nor was it spooked by the hundreds of legionnaires rushing around the camp.

Aerion reached up, placing his gauntleted hand firmly but gently against the thick, muscular base of the mammoth's trunk.

"The waiting is almost over, old friend," Aerion murmured, his voice laced with the calming, resonant magic of his skill. He projected absolute calm and primal authority into the beast's mind. "You and your herd will remain here. When the sun rises, or when the horns sound, we go to war. But for tonight, you must eat. Drink your fill. Rest your legs. The blood comes later."

The alpha mammoth seemed to understand the deep, instinctual intent behind the words. It let out a soft, affirmative rumble, slowly nodding its massive, steel-plated head before turning its attention to the massive troughs of hay and fresh water the legionnaires had provided. Aerion gave the trunk one last, approving pat before turning away.

A short distance away, standing near a stack of barricade timbers, were Tribune Valerius, Tribune Hrogar, and Tribune Livia. Gathered behind them were six Imperial Quaestors, junior officers responsible for the cohort's logistics and squad deployments.

Every single one of them was staring at the mammoth herd in absolute awe as no one have ever done what Aerion did.

Aerion walked over to his command staff, pulling the bronze mask of Krosis away from his face to reveal his calm, golden features.

"They are settling in well," Aerion noted smoothly.

Tribune Hrogar, the massive Nord, shook his head slowly, crossing his thick arms over his breastplate. "By the gods, Praefect. We had heard the tavern rumors in Solitude, of course. A High Elf in Whiterun hoarding a private herd of mammoths. We thought it was just the exaggerated gossip of drunken merchants."

"To see it firsthand..." Tribune Livia added, her sharp eyes scanning the interlocking steel plates. "I have served in the Legion for fifteen years, Praefect. I have seen mages shatter walls and catapults level forts. But I have never expected any commander could actually field something like this. They are living siege engines."

Aerion chuckled softly, a low, confident sound. "It is the culmination of extensive magical research, Tribune. I originally secured the herd to provide a highly lucrative and exclusive cheese business for my estate. But pragmatism dictates that any asset of that size must be versatile. They provide great business in peacetime, and devastating weapons of war when the enemy marches."

Valerius nodded his head, his tactical mind clearly racing with the possibilities. "Without the armor, they would already be powerful enough to break a Stormcloak charge. But with those steel plates? And those pointed iron sleeves capping their tusks? They could shatter a shield wall without breaking stride. The rebels will empty their quivers trying to bring even one of them down, and it won't be enough."

"Which brings me to our own logistics," Aerion said, shifting the conversation to the immediate reality of the siege. "What is the situation with the men, Valerius?"

"The men are entrenched and ready, sir," Valerius reported, snapping to a formal posture. "Morale is incredibly high. Seeing the beasts on our flanks has the men eager for a fight. Furthermore, the massive stockpile of arrows you personally procured from the Battle-Borns and the city fletchers has completely solved our deficit. We have a massive excess of ammunition. When the Stormcloaks cross the plains, we will be able to rain uninterrupted, continuous volley fire down upon them for hours."

Aerion nodded approvingly. "Excellent. But Ulfric's commanders are not entirely foolish. They will not just blindly march into a meat grinder if they can avoid it."

He looked between the three Tribunes. "Keep the men on high alert. I want light, mobile scouts deployed continuously in overlapping shifts. Scour the northern ridges, the eastern road, and the southeastern plains. Keep a constant watch for the Stormcloak vanguard, but more importantly, watch for flanking maneuvers. If they try to bypass the barricades to strike the walls directly, I want to know before they leave the tall grass."

"It will be done, Praefect," the Tribunes chorused, offering crisp salutes.

Leaving his officers to manage the outer perimeter, Aerion signaled to Aeloria and the rest of his retainers. They turned and began walking up the paved incline, passing through the massive, fortified main gates and entering the city of Whiterun.

The atmosphere inside the walls was entirely different from the disciplined quiet of the Legion camp. It was a chaotic, suffocating frenzy.

Citizens were rushing through the streets, carrying whatever meager supplies they could hoard. Shopkeepers were frantically hammering thick wooden planks over their windows. The city guard was running in organized squads, shouting orders to clear the streets and secure the lower districts.

As Aerion and his group navigated through the panicked throng near the marketplace, a sudden, sharp rush of wind disturbed the air above them.

A massive, incredibly dark crow swooped down from the rooftops. With a flurry of black feathers, it landed perfectly on Aerion's right pauldron, its sharp talons gripping the heavy steel.

Lydia reached for her sword instinctively, but Aerion raised a hand, stopping her.

The crow leaned in toward Aerion's ear, letting out a rapid, frantic series of harsh caws, clicks, and low, guttural croaks.

To anyone else, it was just the annoying noise of a scavenger bird fleeing the coming war. But to Aerion, whose Animal Affinity was completely maximized, the sounds instantly translated into highly specific, factual intelligence relayed through his sprawling, invisible spy network.

The crow was reporting from the Wind District.

Vignar Gray-Mane, alongside several other traditionalist noble families who fiercely despised Jarl Balgruuf's decision to invite the Imperial Legion into their city, were not simply sitting in their manors waiting for the battle to end. They were actively holding clandestine meetings. They were planning to incite orchestrated riots, set localized fires in the lower districts, and cause massive internal chaos inside the city the exact moment the Stormcloaks attacked the outer walls.

Their goal was brutal and highly effective, force Jarl Balgruuf to divert a significant portion of Whiterun's defensive garrison away from the walls to deal with the internal riots, thereby weakening the main defenses and giving Ulfric's army the opening they desperately needed to breach the gates.

Aerion stood frozen in the middle of the street, his face turning completely ashen behind his mask.

His mind raced. In his past life, playing the game, this kind of internal political sabotage was never shown. The Battle of Whiterun was a straightforward, glorious clash of armies. But this was the real world. Actions had brutal, logical consequences.

Vignar Gray-Mane was a fiercely proud, stubborn man who believed Balgruuf was a traitor to Skyrim. Of course he wouldn't just sit idly by while Imperial banners flew over his ancestral home. He was organizing a fifth column. He was going to hand the city to Ulfric from the inside.

Aerion's golden eyes narrowed into slits of pure, calculated fury. He leaned his head slightly toward the crow on his shoulder, keeping his voice to an incredibly low, barely audible whisper.

"Listen to me," Aerion commanded the bird, funneling the absolute maximum authority of his magical affinity into the instruction. "Return to the Wind District. Mobilize every bird, every rat, every stray dog, and every squirrel in this city. Do whatever you can to collect factual, physical evidence, steal their written missives, take the wax seals from their desks. And disrupt their attempts by any means necessary. Chew through their bowstrings. Spook their horses. Drop stones on their heads. Delay them until I can address the Jarl."

The crow let out one final, sharp caw of understanding, launched itself off his shoulder, and disappeared into the darkening sky.

Jenassa, Lydia, Aeloria, and Valdemar were watching him closely. They had seen the intense, silent exchange and the sudden, dark shift in his demeanor.

"Aerion?" Aeloria asked, her brow furrowed in deep concern. "What happened? What did that bird want?"

Aerion shook his head slowly, adjusting his heavy cloak. He did not want to cause a panic in the streets, nor did he want to accuse one of the oldest families in Whiterun of high treason without setting the stage first.

"We have a political situation," Aerion said simply, his voice tight. "Nothing we cannot handle. Let us proceed to the Jarl."

He continued leading them up the winding, steep stone steps toward the Cloud District. As they ascended, they were forced to press themselves against the stone walls to make way for hundreds of Whiterun city guards marching in the opposite direction.

The guards were fully armored, their yellow and yellow shields gleaming, their faces set in grim, terrified determination as they marched out of the city to join the Imperial legionnaires manning the outer perimeter. The sheer scale of the mobilization was staggering.

Finally, Aerion and his group reached the summit and pushed open the massive, towering oak doors of Dragonsreach.

If the streets below were chaotic, the main throne hall was a portrait of absolute, unhinged political panic.

The vast, sweeping hall was packed to the absolute breaking point. Every head of the noble families, every wealthy merchant, and every prominent citizen in Whiterun had gathered, demanding audience and protection. The noise was deafening, a cacophony of shouting, pleading, and furious debate.

"My shipments from Rorikstead are entirely cut off! Who is going to compensate me?" a wealthy Breton merchant screamed over the din.

"The Imperials will drag us into a slaughter!" an older Nord woman yelled back. "We should have surrendered!"

Jarl Balgruuf was sitting heavily on his wooden throne, rubbing his temples with one hand, looking profoundly exhausted. He was staring out over the chaos of his people, the heavy burden of leadership practically crushing his shoulders. His entire council, Proventus, Irileth, Hrongar, and Commander Caius, were standing rigidly on the raised podium around the throne, trying and failing to maintain a semblance of order.

As Aerion, Aeloria, and their heavily armed retainers strode into the great hall, their heavy boots echoing on the stone, Jarl Balgruuf looked up.

The Jarl's weary eyes brightened slightly. He immediately raised a hand, gesturing firmly for them to bypass the screaming crowds and approach the throne.

Seeing the Jarl's gesture, the nobles turned to look.

As Aerion and his group moved through the parted crowd, a wave of loud, highly polarized murmurs rippled through the hall.

The Battle-Born family, led by Olfrid, and the numerous merchants who had grown wealthy trading with Tundra Homestead, looked incredibly relieved, their faces showing genuine hope at the sight of the heavily armored Praefect. Conversely, Vignar Gray-Mane, his family, and their circle of traditionalist nobles sneered openly, their eyes filled with utter disdain and barely concealed hatred for the High Elf who wore an Imperial rank.

Aerion ignored them all. He marched directly up to the base of the podium and delivered a crisp, flawless Legion salute to the Jarl, followed by a respectful bow.

"My Jarl," Aerion's metallic voice cut cleanly through the lingering noise of the hall. "I have returned. My Imperial Legion unit has fully entrenched themselves at the outer gate. The barricades are secure. Furthermore, my eleven heavily armored mammoths are now on standby outside the outer wall, anchoring the flanks of your infantry. Whiterun's exterior defenses are absolute."

A collective gasp of shock and sudden, desperate hope echoed from the nobles who hadn't yet heard the rumors of the beasts.

Jarl Balgruuf let out a long, heavy sigh of profound relief, nodding his head deeply.

"Thank the Divines for your efficiency, Aerion," Jarl Balgruuf said, his voice finding its usual booming strength. "And for yours, Aeloria. Please, both of you. You are Thanes of this hold. Come up here and join the rest of my council."

Aerion and Aeloria stepped up onto the raised wooden podium, standing shoulder to shoulder with Irileth and Hrongar, looking out over the sea of anxious faces.

Jarl Balgruuf stood up from his throne. The sheer, imposing physical presence of the Nordic Jarl finally silenced the bickering hall.

"Listen to me, people of Whiterun!" Jarl Balgruuf commanded, his voice echoing off the high, arched wooden ceilings. "The Stormcloaks are marching on our homes. But we will not fall into madness before they even draw their swords! I will have order in my city!"

He pointed a thick finger at the assembled merchants and nobles.

"There will be no panic," Jarl Balgruuf ordered strictly. "And more importantly, there will be absolutely no hoarding of resources! I am placing strict, immediate caps on the market. The prices of food, medicine, and steel will remain exactly as they were yesterday. Anyone caught gouging their neighbors to profit from this siege will be thrown into the dungeon until the war is over!"

Instantly, the nobles erupted into furious protests.

"You cannot dictate our livelihoods, Jarl Balgruuf!" Olfrid Battle-Born shouted, though his tone was more desperate than angry. "We have families to feed! If the siege lasts for weeks or even months—"

"This is an Imperial occupation!" Vignar Gray-Mane roared, stepping forward and pointing a weathered, accusing finger at Aerion. "You have sold us out to the elves and the Legion, Jarl Balgruuf! You are strangling our rights as free Nords!"

The hall devolved into screaming matches again, the conflicting interests of the wealthy blinding them to the absolute necessity of unity.

Aerion stood on the podium, his golden eyes locking onto Vignar Gray-Mane. The old man was putting on a fantastic display of political outrage, hiding the fact that he was actively plotting treason in the dark.

Aerion turned his head slightly. "My Jarl," Aerion asked quietly. "May I interrupt them?"

Jarl Balgruuf looked at the chaotic mess of his court, gritted his teeth, and nodded his head. "If you can silence them, Aerion, be my guest."

Aerion took a slow, highly deliberate step forward, moving to the very edge of the podium. He reached up, unclasped the leather straps, and pulled the bronze mask of Krosis away from his face.

He didn't shout. He didn't scream for silence. He simply tapped into the absolute, terrifying threshold of his Persuasion skill, letting his commanding, resonant voice roll over the crowd like a physical shockwave.

"Silence."

The word was spoken softly, but it carried an unnatural, heavy weight that instantly snapped the attention of every single person in the room. The screaming died in their throats.

Aerion looked down at the assembled nobility of Whiterun, his golden eyes burning with a cold, piercing intensity.

"You stand in the halls of Dragonsreach, screaming about your own profit and political pride while an army of tens of thousands marches with the explicit intent of burning your homes to the ash," Aerion began, his voice echoing flawlessly through the absolute quiet. "Look around you. Look at the faces of your neighbors."

He swept his gaze across the room, ensuring he made eye contact with both Olfrid Battle-Born and Vignar Gray-Mane.

"When the Stormcloak catapults begin firing, the rocks will not stop to ask which family you belong to," Aerion stated, his tone dripping with undeniable, brutal pragmatism. "When the fires spread through the Plains District, they will burn the homes of all nobles, including the Battle-Borns and the Gray-Manes, with equal indifference. The rebels do not care about your pedigrees, your ledgers, or your long standing feuds. They care only about conquering this city."

He paused, letting the reality sink in.

"There are no sides in this room today," Aerion commanded, his voice rising, filling with an inspiring, unifying warmth. "This is not about the Empire, and it is not about the rebellion. This is about Whiterun. This city is the home of everyone standing here. The men standing on those walls right now are your sons, your brothers, and your fathers. If you divide yourselves now, if you hoard your wealth and fight amongst yourselves, you are doing Ulfric's job for him!"
