"Now since it have come to this everyone," Jarl Balgruuf siad, the weary politician entirely replaced by a warlord preparing for battle. "Let's go to the second floor." Then he turned and strode up the wooden stairs leading to the second floor of Dragonsreach, as they then stood on the strategic map room overlooking the city. Aerion, Aeloria, Valdemar, Lydia, and Jenassa followed closely behind, gathering around the massive wooden table covered in maps of the hold.
Commander Caius immediately began the briefing, his hands braced on the table.
"The Stormcloaks will approach from the north, east, and southeast, moving across the plains," he stated, pointing to the maps. "They will likely establish their forward siege camps out of range of our trebuchets. Our main priority must be the outer walls and the main drawbridge, my Jarl. If they breach the drawbridge, they flood the Plains District, and the city falls into brutal street to street fighting."
"We need barricades on the approach," Irileth interjected, her dark eyes flashing. "We must funnel their infantry into chokepoints before they ever reach the walls. Force them into the killing fields where our archers can rain fire down on them."
"I agree," Aerion spoke up, leaning over the map, his golden eyes scanning the terrain. "My five hundred Imperial legionaries will arrive by tomorrow. I will station them outside the city gates, anchoring the barricades. They will act as the anvil. We will bleed the Stormcloaks in the fields before they can touch the stone."
Proventus wrung his hands nervously. "But Praefect... Ulfric commands thousands. Even with your cohort, they will severely outnumber the Whiterun's army. If they attempt a massive, overwhelming charge, they could break our lines through sheer weight of numbers."
Aerion looked at the steward, a cold, utterly confident smirk forming on his lips.
"They will not break our lines, Proventus," Aerion assured him smoothly. "Because my legionnaires will not be holding the vanguard alone."
Jarl Balgruuf looked up from the map, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What do you mean, Aerion? Are you expecting immediate reinforcements from Solitude?"
"No, my Jarl," Aerion replied, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a terrifying, undeniable weight. "I mean that I am mobilizing the entirety of my private assets for the defense of this city."
He placed a finger on the map, pointing directly to the open plains just outside the barricades.
"When the Stormcloaks inevitably attempt to charge our defensive lines," Aerion promised, locking eyes with Balgruuf, "they will be met by my vanguard. Eleven fully grown, heavily armored mammoths."
Immediately stunned silence fell over the war room.
Hrongar's jaw practically dropped. Commander Caius blinked rapidly, staring at the High Elf as if he had grown a second head. Even Irileth looked genuinely shocked.
"Armored... mammoths?" Caius repeated, his voice barely a whisper.
"Custom forged, interlocking steel plating, reinforced leather, and iron banded tusk guards," Aerion confirmed effortlessly, detailing the brutal reality of his creations. "They are completely immune to standard arrow fire, and they obey my commands perfectly. I will position them on the flanks of the Imperial line. When the Stormcloaks commit their infantry to the center, I will unleash the herd."
A slow dangerous feral grin spread across Hrongar's scarred face. The Nord slammed his fist onto the wooden table, a booming laugh echoing through the room.
"By the blood of Ysgramor!" Hrongar roared, absolute delight shining in his eyes. "Ulfric's farmboys are going to break and run the second they see that! They are preparing for a siege, not a stampede!"
Even Jarl Balgruuf could not suppress a dark, grimly satisfied smile. The sheer overwhelming audacity of deploying armored mammoths against a rebel army was exactly the kind of overwhelming advantage Whiterun desperately needed.
"Then the plan is set," Jarl Balgruuf declared, his voice ringing with absolute, unbreakable resolve. He looked around the table, meeting the eyes of every commander and Thane in the room.
"Fortify the walls. Build the barricades. Bring the Legion into the city, and prepare the beasts," Jarl Balgruuf commanded. "The waiting is over. Whiterun will stand tall."
Aerion offered a deep, formal nod, the heavy reality of the moment settling perfectly over his shoulders.
The political maneuvering, the assassinations, the espionage, the careful forging of alliances, it had all culminated in this exact room. The board was set. The pieces were moving.
As Aerion and his entourage stepped out of the strategic map room and began descending the grand wooden staircase of Dragonsreach, they could hear the loud, booming, and authoritative voice of Jarl Balgruuf.
"Commander Caius! Recall all patrols! I want every able bodied guard on the walls and the barricades manned before nightfall!" Jarl Balgruuf's commands echoed through the great hall, the urgency bleeding through the thick timber. "Proventus, open the emergency armories! Issue steel to the militia! We are at war!"
The frantic, organized chaos of a city bracing for a siege was already beginning to unfold in the upper echelons of the keep. But as Aerion led Aeloria, Valdemar, Lydia, Jenassa, and Eisa down the sweeping stone steps of the Cloud District, the atmosphere gradually shifted.
Down in the Plains District, the afternoon market was still bustling with its usual, ignorant vitality. Merchants were loudly haggling over the price of winter cabbage, children were chasing each other around the ancient well, and the smell of forged iron mingled pleasantly with the scent of roasted meats. The ordinary citizens of Whiterun had no idea that the absolute destruction of their peaceful neutrality was currently marching across the eastern plains.
Aerion did not pause in the market. He led his group directly toward the heavy wooden doors of the Bannered Mare.
As they stepped inside, the tavern was filled with its usual, roaring warmth. The hearth fire crackled loudly, and patrons were crowded around the tables, eagerly devouring the pizza and spiced fries that had turned the inn into the most lucrative establishment in the hold.
Aerion immediately scanned the room and spotted Ysolda standing behind the main wooden counter, expertly balancing a ledger while directing Hulda toward the kitchens.
The moment Ysolda looked up and saw Aerion's towering, armored figure, her sharp merchant's focus instantly vanished, replaced by a bright, completely genuine smile. She wiped her hands on a cloth and began to step around the counter to greet him properly.
Aerion met her halfway. Instead of offering his usual warm greeting, he reached out, taking hold of her hand. His grip was firm, his golden eyes serious.
"Ysolda," Aerion said, his voice pitched low enough that only she could hear. "I need to speak with you in a private space. Immediately."
Ysolda blinked, surprised by the abrupt, grave tone. The smile faded from her lips, replaced by a sharp, intuitive concern. She didn't hesitate or ask questions in the crowded room. She simply nodded her head, squeezing his hand back.
"Follow me," she murmured.
She led him past the noisy patrons, up the creaking wooden stairs, and into one of the vacant, private guest rooms on the second floor. She closed the heavy wooden door behind them, instantly cutting off the raucous noise of the tavern below.
"What is wrong, Aerion?" Ysolda asked, turning to face him. Her green eyes were wide, scanning the soot and minor scuffs on his heavy Nordic Carved Armor from his raid the night before. "You look like a man preparing for the end of the world."
"Ulfric Stormcloak has delivered his axe to Dragonsreach," Aerion stated bluntly, offering no pleasantries to soften the blow. "Jarl Balgruuf is returning it. The neutrality is over. The Stormcloaks are marching on Whiterun, and the Imperial Legion is mobilizing to intercept them at the gates."
Ysolda stood perfectly still, the blood draining completely from her face.
She was a brilliant, pragmatic woman, but she was a merchant, not a soldier. The abstract, distant rumors of the civil war had just violently crashed into her living room. A tremor of sheer panic entered her voice.
"What? War? Here?" Ysolda whispered, her hands instinctively coming up to grip the lapels of his heavy cloak. "Aerion, the city... the walls are tall but it's old. The garrison is stretched thin as it is. What is going to happen to Whiterun?"
Aerion stepped closer, placing his large, gauntleted hands gently over hers, anchoring her against the rising tide of panic.
"The city will be safe, Ysolda," Aerion assured her, his voice projecting a deep, unshakable calm. His Persuasion skill hummed subtly beneath his words, wrapping her in a sense of absolute security. "The fighting will never enter these streets. I will personally make sure of it. The Imperial heavy infantry is arriving within hours, and the barricades are being drawn outside the outer walls. The Stormcloaks will break against our vanguard before they ever touch the stone of this city."
Ysolda nodded her head numbly, her breathing slowing slightly as she absorbed his absolute confidence. But then, a horrifying realization dawned in her eyes.
"Your unit," Ysolda breathed, her grip tightening on his cloak. "You are a Praefect now. You are going to be standing on those plains. You will be in the center of the fighting."
"I will," Aerion confirmed softly.
"Aerion, please," Ysolda pleaded, her professional composure cracking entirely, revealing the raw, desperate affection beneath. "Be careful. You are incredibly powerful, but an army is a different kind of monster. Don't do anything reckless by yourself if you can help it. Promise me."
Aerion looked down into her frightened green eyes. He could not lie to her. He was preparing to unleash armored mammoths and coordinate a massive infantry clash against thousands of screaming rebels. Recklessness was virtually a requirement for victory.
"I cannot promise you that I will stay out of the danger, Ysolda," Aerion said gently, reaching up to brush a stray lock of hair from her cheek. "But I promise you that I will survive it. I have vastly too much to live for to die in the mud for Ulfric Stormcloak."
Ysolda let out a shaky breath, pressing her forehead against his breastplate for a brief moment. "And your estate? Tundra Homestead? It sits completely exposed on the plains. What will happen to the cheese operation? The workers?"
Aerion sighed softly, his tactical mind already churning through the defensive logistics.
"The estate should not be the primary focus of the attack," Aerion explained methodically. "The Stormcloaks are operating on a rapidly closing deadline. They desperately need the political win of taking the capital. They cannot afford to waste precious hours and manpower besieging a reinforced private manor when Dragonsreach is their true objective."
He stepped back slightly, his golden eyes hardening. "But I am not leaving it to chance. I will ensure it is as heavily protected as I possibly can."
"How?" Ysolda asked nervously. "Your mercenaries will be on the walls, won't they?"
"The mercenaries will be joining the garrison, yes," Aerion confirmed. "But before the battle begins, I am going to lay down an extensive network of highly volatile Fire, Frost, and Lightning rune traps in the tall grass completely surrounding the outer walls and the mammoth pens. Any Stormcloak raiding party attempting to flank our lines and loot the homestead will be instantly incinerated before they can even draw their swords."
Ysolda nodded her head, swallowing hard. The sheer, brutal reality of his preparations reinforced the gravity of the situation, but it also offered a terrifying comfort. He was ready.
Aerion leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a serious whisper.
"When the war horns blow, and the panic truly sets into this city, you must be incredibly careful, Ysolda," Aerion warned her. "Lock the doors to the Bannered Mare. Do not let desperate people take advantage of the chaos. Keep yourself safe."
"I will," Ysolda promised, her merchant's spine finally stiffening. "I know how to survive."
Aerion offered her a final, reassuring nod before turning and leaving the room.
He descended the stairs and walked directly past the crowded tables, moving purposefully toward the sweltering heat of the tavern's kitchens.
He found Saadia kneading a large bowl of dough near the roaring ovens, her brow glistening with sweat. When she saw Aerion's armored form step into the doorway, she immediately dropped the dough, wiping her hands frantically on her apron.
Aerion stepped inside, pulling the heavy wooden door shut to ensure they were entirely alone.
"It is done," Aerion stated in a low, cold voice. "Kematu and the Alik'r have been handled."
Saadia's dark eyes widened in sheer relief. "They are dead? You killed them?"
"I did not kill them," Aerion corrected smoothly. "But, I permanently removed them from the province. They will never return to Skyrim. They are probably marching back to the deserts of Hammerfell, and your contract has been rendered void."
Saadia blinked, a flash of genuine disappointment crossing her features. The paranoia still lingered. "But... if they are alive, what is stopping them from realizing they were tricked? What if they come back?"
"They will not come back," Aerion said, his tone leaving absolutely no room for debate. "But I strongly suggest you remain strictly inside the walls of this city for the next month, just to ensure all of them has completely crossed the border."
Saadia looked at the towering High Elf, slowly realizing the sheer, impossible magnitude of what he had just accomplished. He hadn't just slaughtered a cave full of elite mercenaries, he had somehow forced hardened Alik'r commandos to willingly abandon a high value contract and walk away. It was a terrifying display of pure influence.
"I... I accept this," Saadia stammered, bowing her head deeply. "As I promised, Aerion. You have my absolute, unwavering loyalty. Whatever you need."
Aerion did not smile. He took a slow, deliberate step closer, using his immense height to loom over the Redguard noblewoman.
"You had better mean that, Saadia," Aerion warned, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper that chilled the sweltering kitchen. "Because during my negotiations with Kematu, he informed me exactly why the noble houses of Hammerfell were hunting you."
Saadia completely froze. Her breathing hitched, her eyes darting nervously toward the door.
"I know what happened at Taneth," Aerion lied flawlessly, leveraging the lore from his past life to project total omniscience. "I know about the Thalmor. I know exactly what you are accused of."
Saadia trembled visibly, taking a half-step backward until her spine hit the stone counter.
"If the information Kematu gave me is true," Aerion continued, his golden eyes glowing with a lethal promise, "then you cannot be trusted. So heed my warning very carefully. You work for me now. You will run your operations from this tavern, and you will remain loyal. If you ever do anything stupid, if you ever attempt to sell my secrets, or betray my trust to save your own skin, I will know."
He leaned in, his face inches from hers.
"And I will not send mercenaries to arrest you," Aerion promised softly. "I will hunt you down myself."
Saadia was visibly trembling, her knuckles white as she gripped the edge of the counter. She had traded the pursuit of the Alik'r for the protection of a monster vastly more dangerous.
"I understand," she whispered frantically. "I swear it."
Satisfied that the fear was deeply, permanently embedded, Aerion turned and walked out of the kitchen without another word.
He gathered Aeloria, Valdemar, Lydia, Jenassa, and Eisa from the main room. They pushed through the doors of the Bannered Mare and walked briskly through the winding streets of Whiterun, passing groups of panicked citizens and shouting guards, until they reached the main city gates.
They stepped out onto the open drawbridge, descending the paved ramp toward the Whiterun Stables. The afternoon sun was warm, but a bitter, tense wind was blowing from the east.
"We wait here," Aerion commanded, folding his arms across his breastplate.
As they stood near the grazing horses, staring out across the sprawling, golden tundra, Aeloria stepped up beside him. The Dragonborn was wearing her heavy, customized steel armor, her hand resting thoughtfully on the hilt of her sword.
"Aerion," Aeloria began, her brow furrowed in tactical thought. "When the battle finally ensues, and the Stormcloaks cross the plains... where exactly should we be positioned? The city guard will hold the walls, but the vanguard will be chaos."
"You will be positioned in the absolute center of the vanguard, Aeloria," Aerion answered without hesitation, pointing toward the flat, grassy expanse directly in front of the barricades. "You are the Dragonborn. You are a living legend to the people of this province. The Stormcloaks revere the old ways. Seeing you standing against them will inflict a massive psychological blow to their morale."
He turned to look at her, his expression serious. "Furthermore, I need you to use your Thu'um. Unrelenting Force, Fire Breath, whatever you have mastered. If the Stormcloaks attempt to converge their infantry into a massive, centralized shield wall to break our lines, a single shout from you can shatter their formation and send their front line flying into the dirt."
Standing a few feet away, Lydia and Jenassa suddenly exchanged a very long, highly significant side-eye.
They both remembered the roaring push and hot inferno Aerion had unleashed inside in two separate place just in matter of days. They knew intimately well that the Dragonborn was not the only person standing by the stables who could tear a shield wall apart with a single word. But they remained perfectly silent, honoring Aerion's deeply guarded secret.
"I can do that," Aeloria nodded, a fierce, determined fire lighting in her eyes. She accepted the heavy responsibility without flinching. "But what about you? And the rest of the retainers?"
"We will also hold the center," Aerion stated smoothly, drawing his Ebony Greatsword and resting the massive, pitch black blade against the dirt. "We are the anvil. We have to defend Whiterun from these invaders, and we will do it from the front."
They waited.
The minutes stretched into grueling, tense hours. The sun began its slow descent toward the western horizon, casting long, dramatic shadows across the plains. The distant sound of war horns echoing from the city walls kept everyone on edge.
Finally, a low, rhythmic, thunderous vibration began to shake the dirt beneath their boots.
From the western road, a massive cloud of dust billowed into the air.
Then, the Empire arrived.
Marching in perfect, flawless synchronization, five hundred heavily armored Imperial Legionnaires crested the hill. The sunlight caught on hundreds of polished steel shields and drawn shortswords. The crimson banners of the Imperial Dragon snapped violently in the wind.
Riding at the absolute front of the massive, disciplined column was Eisa, looking incredibly proud of herself, flanked by the three Tribunes, Valerius, Hrogar, and Livia.
The people who were desperately trying to flee Whiterun, packing their carts near the stables, stopped and stared in absolute, stunned silence. The Whiterun city guards manning the outer perimeter dropped their jaws. The sight of a full, reinforced Imperial cohort marching directly onto their neutral doorstep was an overwhelming display of raw military power.
The column halted perfectly on command, fifty yards from the stables.
Tribunes Valerius, Hrogar, and Livia dismounted. They marched forward, their heavy armor clanking, and stopped directly in front of Aerion.
In perfect unison, the three senior officers snapped off a flawless, chest thumping salute.
"Praefect!" Valerius barked, his voice carrying over the silent crowd. "The army has arrived, fully armed and prepared for deployment!"
Aerion returned the salute with crisp, commanding precision. He looked over the sea of disciplined soldiers, a deep sense of satisfaction settling over him.
"Excellent time, Tribune," Aerion praised him. "Did you manage to send word to General Tullius in Solitude before you marched?"
"I did, Praefect," Valerius confirmed with a sharp nod. "The courier rode north on our fastest horse. The General will know that Whiterun is under siege before midnight."
"Good," Aerion commanded, his voice projecting total authority. "Order the men to break formation. I want the camp established immediately, directly behind the outer stone wall of the city, utilizing the natural chokepoint of the terrain. Begin fortifying the barricades."
Before Valerius could relay the order, a squad of Whiterun city guards, led by an incredibly nervous but determined Captain, pushed their way through the gawking crowd.
"Hold there!" the Guard Captain shouted, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword, though he looked terrified at the prospect of challenging five hundred legionnaires. He looked directly at Aerion. "Thane Aerion, what is the meaning of this? Whiterun is a neutral city! By the Jarl's explicit decree, we do not accept the appearance of Imperial Legions on our borders! I must demand that these troops withdraw immediately!"
Aerion did not draw his weapon, nor did he allow his Tribunes to aggressively step forward. He handled the situation with the calm, immovable diplomacy required of a high-ranking liaison.
"I am well aware of the city's long standing neutrality, Captain," Aerion said smoothly, his voice carrying a soothing confidence that immediately de escalated the guard's panic. "But that neutrality ended hours ago. I have accepted direct orders from Jarl Balgruuf himself to mobilize this cohort for the defense of the city."
The Captain blinked, bewildered. "The Jarl ordered this?"
"He did," Aerion nodded firmly. "Ulfric Stormcloak has delivered his axe, and the Jarl has rejected it. The Stormcloaks are marching on us as we speak. If you doubt my words, you may send a runner to Dragonsreach right now to confirm it. But for now, please, stand aside and allow me to do the job Jarl Balgruuf has explicitly given me. Your walls need this infantry."
The Captain stared at the massive Imperial army, then looked at the solemn, supporting nod of the Dragonborn standing beside Aerion. The guard swallowed hard, stepping back and lowering his hand from his sword.
"If it is the Jarl's will," the Captain muttered, waving his men to step aside.
"Establish the camp, Tribune," Aerion ordered Valerius.
Within minutes, the disciplined chaos of military mobilization began. Tents were erected, supply wagons were positioned to act as defensive barriers, and archers began calculating ranges toward the eastern road.
As the Legion dug in, the terrifying news that Whiterun was actively under attack by the Stormcloaks swept through the city like wildfire.
Absolute chaos descended upon the districts. Merchants desperately boarded up their windows. Families huddled in their homes, praying to the Divines. The streets were filled with shouting guards and the clatter of hastily issued militia steel.
Sensing the impending panic could tear the city apart from the inside, Jarl Balgruuf the Greater stepped out onto the high balcony of Dragonsreach, his booming voice amplified by the acoustics of the cloud district, addressing the terrified citizens gathered below.
Jarl Balgruuf did not sugarcoat the truth, but he quelled the chaos with the raw strength of a Nordic Jarl. He announced that Ulfric Stormcloak had forced this war upon them by sending an ultimatum, but do not worry as Whiterun would not be standing alone. He formally declared that he had requested the full might of the Empire to help them in this dark hour, and that the Legion was already manning their gates.
