The sky was cloudy when Ethan and Alice went into the park, but neither of them paid much attention to it. They were too busy talking, strolling along slowly under the whispering trees, their laughter mingling with the quiet hum of the world around them.
But it happened too quickly.
The dark clouds rolled over.
A low rumble cracked through the sky.
Then the rain came—hard and fast.
"Crap!" Alice yelped as the first cold drops splashed against her arms and hair.
Ethan grabbed her wrist instinctively. "Come on—there's shade up ahead!"
They ran, feet splashing in puddles that already formed on the graveled path. But before they reached the half-way point—
"Ah!" Alice stumbled, catching hold of his arm. "My ankle—!"
Ethan turned, his eyes widening. "You okay?"
She flinched, clutching her foot. "I twisted it-damn it…"
Wordlessly, Ethan dropped down onto his haunches before her.
"Get on," he said firmly.
Alice blinked. "W-What?"
"Come on. You're hurt, and we're gonna get soaked. Just hold on."
Before she could protest further, Ethan reached back, drawing her up gently onto his back. She gasped as her chest pressed against him, instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck.
"H-Hey! Wait—!"
"No time," he cut in, already running.
The rain came down harder now, and they were instantly drenched. Thunder boomed from somewhere across town as he ran through the park, dodging between benches and trees, bone-chilling rain soaking through his thin shirt to his very skin. Alice clung tightly to him, her cheeks flushed and warm against the chill of the rain. Her chest pressed against his back with every step, and she could feel the muscles moving under her hands.
She buried her face in his shoulder half from embarrassment… half from something else she couldn't name.
Then-a red neon light.
A building at the edge of the park, a hotel, not extravagant but tidy and comfy with varnish-red lights softly glowing under the stormy sky.
Ethan ran to the door, kicking the door open with his foot.
Warmth enveloped them the moment they stepped inside.
At the counter sat a middle-aged woman who had a professional expression, but her eyes seemed to sparkle in amusement. She looked up, and her gaze trailed from Ethan's soaked figure to the flushed girl clinging to his back, rain-drenched, breathing hard, clothes clinging tightly to every curve.
Ethan came forward. "Uh—hi. Can we get a room? She hurt her ankle."
An eyebrow rising, her lips tugged into a sly smile. "Oh, I see."
Alice looked up and instantly flushed deeper, realizing what the woman was more than likely thinking. But she said nothing to correct her.
She held out a key, with a knowing look. "Room 207. Enjoy your stay, lovebirds."
Ethan blinked. "Wait, we're not—"
"Let's go," Alice muttered, nudging him before he could say more.
He shrugged and went up the stairs, too tired to argue, utterly confused.
The door clicked open.
Ethan stepped inside, carefully setting Alice down on the bed. The room was warm, with soft yellow lighting and a large window showing the rainstorm outside. The sound of droplets hitting the glass echoed gently.
They were soaked.
Ethan turned away, tugging off his jacket and running a hand through his soaked hair.
She sat at the edge of the bed, her shirt clinging tightly to her skin. The outline of her curves, her waist, her chest—it was all there, visible in ways that made her cheeks burn.
She saw Ethan turn toward her—and go still.
Her eyes met his.
Her breath caught in the middle of her throat.
She could have hollered. She could have told him to turn away.
But instead…
She looked down, then back up, and gave the faintest of nods-embarrassed, but not stopping him.
Ethan's heart raced.
He looked for just a moment longer, before forcing himself to turn away again, trying to find a towel or a spare blanket in the small wardrobe.
The silence was stretched between them, thick and heavy with tension neither of them dared to speak yet.
After some time, Alice's voice came quietly.
"…You're different now, Ethan."
He paused. "Is that… a bad thing?" She shook her head, even though he wouldn't be able to see it. "No. It's… nice." Outside, the rain was still falling. But inside that silent hotel room, something else had started-soft, fragile, and true.
