Chapter 128: Chasing the Breakthrough
Friday, August 20, 2010
Friday morning brought more rain and dark clouds over Broadfield Stadium.
Niels pulled his pickup onto the damp gravel of the training ground.
He felt the pressure of the upcoming match against Preston. It could either jumpstart their season or bury them deeper.
The media wasn't letting up. Friday's papers ran headlines like "Crawley's Stumble Continues" and "Midfield Muddle Dooms Niels' Dream." The criticism stung, but after Thursday night's dinner, Niels could sense a shift. The squad was finally determined to prove people wrong.
In the meeting room, Niels went over the tactics, his marker squeaking against the whiteboard. "Liam, Reece, we're dropping the defensive line to keep it compact," he explained.
"Midfield, form a tighter block. Pogba and Nate, screen those spaces. Freeman, I want you exploiting the gaps between their defense and midfield."
The players watched the board closely, soaking it in.
