"Gracious Heaven!" Eloise gasped, her shock raw and genuine. "I didn't know any of this. I'm truly sorry you've been put through this. How could he punish an innocent person like you—and want the same for your unborn child?"
"Mrs. Eloise, I didn't call because I'm seeking empathy," Selina said, her voice firm and detached of heartache. "I'm trying to come to terms with a revelation that I'm certain isn't entirely true."
