Chapter 323 - The Shrek Inspection Team Walking Among the People

"The fish soup's ready."

Before long, Zhang Lexuan brought out the final dish. Su Xing, meanwhile, had already started eating with gusto.

Zhang Lexuan sat beside him, not rushing to eat herself. Instead, she asked, "How does it taste? I bought the fish fresh in the city this afternoon."

Su Xing didn't even look at her expectant little expression. He just kept shoveling rice into his mouth, replying vaguely as he ate, "Delicious. Sister Lexuan, your cooking just keeps getting better."

Hearing his praise, a happy smile bloomed on Zhang Lexuan's face.

After spending so much time together, the two understood each other quite well. Zhang Lexuan had discovered that Su Xing didn't really have any hobbies—except eating. He was a full-fledged foodie.

Because of that, she had deliberately gone to learn cooking. In the beginning, the results were truly hard to swallow.

But gradually, through repeated attempts and with Su Xing's guidance, her culinary skills steadily improved.

Not long ago, Su Xing himself had admitted that there was nothing more he could teach her—she had completely graduated.

Resting her chin in her hands, Zhang Lexuan quietly watched Su Xing, a faint smile lingering on her face.

If only things could always stay like this… she thought.

During this period, although Su Xing's soul was recovering extremely slowly, Zhang Lexuan knew clearly that at most five more years would be enough for his soul to fully recover. And when that happened, it would likely also be the moment he regained his memories.

Thinking of that, Zhang Lexuan felt at a loss. When that time came, how was she supposed to face him?

" Sister Lexuan? Sister Lexuan?"

Su Xing's voice snapped her out of her daze. She came back to herself, her expression turning slightly unnatural. "X–Xiao Xing, what is it?"

"Sister Lexuan, you should eat too. What are you spacing out for? I called you several times just now and you didn't respond."

Zhang Lexuan smiled lightly. "I was just thinking about something. Don't just focus on eating—look what I brought you."

As she spoke, she somehow produced a medium-sized wine jar.

Seeing it, Su Xing exclaimed in surprise, "Sister Lexuan, why did you buy wine? Neither of us drinks."

"A new tavern opened in South City. I saw a lot of people lining up, so I bought a jar to try."

She took out two large bowls and poured one full bowl for each of them.

"Is that so? Then I'll try it too. Let's see what's so special about it that it attracts so many people."

Hearing her explanation, Su Xing grew interested as well.

Taking a small sip, he found it slightly sweet on entry, carrying a hint of sweet-and-sour flavor. After that sweetness faded came the sharp bite of strong liquor.

Su Xing's eyes lit up, and he drained the bowl in one go.

"Sister Lexuan, I want more."

Zhang Lexuan also drank hers in one gulp, then refilled both bowls.

One bowl after another.

Before long, the entire jar of wine was emptied into their stomachs.

"Xiao Xing, come on… let's keep… keep drinking…"

Zhang Lexuan seemed drunk. Her speech was slurred as she waved the bowl around aimlessly.

Su Xing, on the other hand, was slumped over the table, frowning. His head felt heavy, waves of nausea surging as he fought the urge to vomit.

He shook his head, forced himself to endure the dizziness, and helped Zhang Lexuan back to her room. After laying her on the bed, he turned to leave.

But at that moment, Zhang Lexuan grabbed his hand and said indistinctly, "X–Xiao… don't… don't go…"

Her beautiful eyes were unfocused, her lips calling his name in a muddled voice.

"Sister Lexuan, you've had too much to drink."

Su Xing gently removed her arm, casually pulled over a blanket to cover her, and then left the room.

After he was gone, Zhang Lexuan slowly opened her eyes. They were clear and lucid—there was no trace of the earlier haze.

Her emotions were extremely complicated, filled with struggle and guilt.

One lie required countless more lies to patch up its cracks. Zhang Lexuan believed that Su Xing might already harbor some suspicions, yet he had never brought them up on his own.

Five years—at most, only five more years before Su Xing would leave. But to Zhang Lexuan, that felt far too short.

If only things could continue like this forever…

Man farming, woman weaving, a calm and peaceful life—free of the scheming, plots, and intrigues of the soul world. Days like these were truly wonderful.

During this time, Zhang Lexuan had noticed something off about Su Xing: he seemed overly cold. Aside from her, he rarely spoke to anyone else in the village.

This didn't feel like a personality trait. Instead, it seemed more like his spirit had been affected in some way. Unfortunately, no matter how she checked, she couldn't find any problem.

Three days later, it happened to be market day. The two went to the nearest city, weaving through the crowded streets, buying a few interesting trinkets whenever they saw something novel.

They entered a men's clothing shop. Zhang Lexuan, like a caring elder sister, picked out outfits, holding up anything that looked good against Su Xing to see how it fit.

When they finally returned to the village, fully loaded with purchases, what greeted them was a scene of carnage—a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood.

Villagers lay scattered across the ground. Some had their chests ripped open, organs dug out. Others were shriveled like dried corpses. Some were reduced to nothing but skeletons, their identities impossible to determine.

The surviving villagers knelt beside their loved ones, crying until their voices were torn apart.

Zhang Lexuan clenched her jade-like hand inside her sleeve. There was no need to say who was responsible—this was clearly the work of those damned evil soul masters.

But why did it have to be such a coincidence? Why did it have to happen while they were away?

If either she or Xiao Xing had been here, this tragedy would never have occurred.

Su Xing stood there with a blank expression. Logically speaking, these were people he saw every day. Seeing them end up like this, he should have felt sorrow.

But why… why did he feel so little grief?

He couldn't understand it.

By dusk, the righteous Shrek Inspection Team arrived at the village ravaged by evil soul masters.

They wore neat, splendid uniforms, rings of soul rings glowing beneath their feet as they descended from the sky. On their chests was pinned the emblem of a green monster, with a line of glittering words beneath it:

Shrek Inspection Team.

Seeing them, Zhang Lexuan's expression changed. She pulled Su Xing behind the few remaining villagers, lowering her headscarf slightly to avoid being recognized.

The Shrek Inspection Team existed to punish evil and uphold peace. Upon witnessing the惨状 of Wanghun Village, they conducted a brief investigation. The leader then said sorrowfully, "We arrived too late. We've once again allowed those damned evil soul masters to succeed."

The leader walked to the area with the most corpses, placed his hand on his chest, and made several prayer-like gestures. With a devout expression, he said:

"Departed souls, please rest in peace. May the noble, great, benevolent Sea God—who saves the suffering and rescues the afflicted—guide your spirits across the far shore and into paradise."
