Chapter 17 - His Place

Emma walked me to my car when the day wound down.

The atmosphere had turned cool, the kind of gentle cool that made the city feel softer somehow, less indifferent than it usually seemed. She hugged me at the door, held on a beat longer than usual.

"You good?" she asked.

"Better than good," I said. And I meant it. The Rose call sat in my chest like something settled rather than something shaken. "Thank you for the invitation."

"Anytime," she said. "Call me tomorrow. I want details on everything."

I laughed and promised I would.

I drove home with the windows cracked, the air moving through the car, my mind quiet in a way it hadn't been in weeks.

I had said what needed to be said.

Rose had nothing left to throw at me.

And for the first time in a long time I felt like I was standing on solid ground instead of waiting for the next thing to knock me off it.

My phone buzzed as I pulled into my building's parking area.

Bryan: How was your day?

I smiled before I'd even decided to.

Me: Good actually. Really good.

Bryan: Yeah? Tell me.

Me: Dinner with Emma. And a phone call that went better than it had any right to.

Bryan: Intriguing. Details?

Me: Later. It's a good story.

Bryan: I look forward to it.

A pause.

Bryan: Come over?

I looked at the message for a moment.

We hadn't done this before, not this way. He had always come to me. My apartment. My space. My rules, my walls, my ability to close a door behind him whenever I needed to.

This was different.

This was an invitation into his world instead.

Me: Now?

Bryan: If you want to.

I sat in my car in the quiet parking area and thought about it.

Thought about the version of myself who had answered the door two weeks ago with a rose in her hand and told herself it was just talking.

Thought about how much had changed since then.

How much I had stopped pretending.

Me: Send me the address.

His apartment was exactly what I would have imagined if I'd let myself imagine it, clean lines, warm low lighting, the particular order of a man who liked his space to feel calm even when his life wasn't.

He opened the door before I could knock a second time.

"Hey," he said softly.

He was wearing a plain grey shirt, sleeves pushed up, his hair slightly disheveled like he'd been running his hands through it.

He looked at me the way he always looked at me, like he was checking that I was real.

"Hey," I said back.

He stepped aside to let me in.

The apartment smelled faintly of something warm, cooking, maybe, or just him. I looked around at the space, taking it in. Books on a shelf. A worn leather couch. A window that looked out over the city, the lights starting to come on as the evening deepened.

"This is nice," I said.

"It's home," he said simply.

I turned to look at him.

He was watching me with an expression that was softer than I'd seen from him before, none of the charged intensity from our previous nights, none of the urgency. Just something quiet and attentive.

"You said it was a good story, The phone call."

I told him.

All of it, Rose's disguised voice, the warning, the moment I recognized her, the laugh that came before I'd planned it, the congratulations I'd meant completely.

He listened without interrupting, his expression moving through several things, surprise, then something that looked like admiration, then something quieter and more serious.

When I finished he was quiet for a moment.

"You didn't need me to fight that battle for you," he said softly.

"No," I agreed. "I didn't."

"I'm glad." He stepped closer. "Not because I doubted you could handle it. Because I like watching you handle things.

There's something" He paused, searching for the word. "Steadying. About watching you be exactly who you are."

I looked up at him.

The space between us had closed without either of us deciding to close it.

"Bryan," I said quietly.

"Mm."

"Thank you. For the invitation. For" I gestured vaguely at the apartment, at him, at all of it. "For letting me into your world for once instead of always being in mine."

Something moved across his face, tender, a little vulnerable in a way I hadn't seen from him before.

"I wanted you here," he said. "In my space. Surrounded by my things. I wanted to know what it felt like to have you exist inside the life I actually live instead of just the moments I get to borrow."

The words settled in my chest with a weight I wasn't prepared for.

I reached up and touched his jaw.

He turned his face into my palm, eyes closing briefly.

"Stay," he said quietly. Not a question. Barely even a request. Just something honest, laid bare between us.

"I'm here," I said.

He kissed me slowly.

Different from the urgency of our previous nights, this was unhurried, deliberate, the kind of kiss that took its time because there was nowhere else either of us needed to be.

His hands found my waist, drawing me closer, and I felt the warmth of him through the thin fabric of my dress, felt the careful way he held me like something he intended to take his time with.

"I've thought about this," he murmured against my lips. "About having you here. In my bed. Not just borrowed time in your apartment."

"Show me," I whispered.

He led me through the apartment with my hand in his, past the living room, down a short hallway, into a bedroom lit only by the city lights filtering through tall windows.

The bed was simple, the sheets a deep charcoal grey, everything about the room quiet and unpretentious.

He turned to face me, his hands finding the zip of my dress at the back, easing it down slowly, his lips finding my shoulder as the fabric loosened.

"Beautiful," he murmured against my skin.

The dress slipped to the floor.

He stepped back to look at me, really look, his eyes moving over me with a reverence that made my breath catch.

"Every time," he said quietly, "I forget how much I missed this. And then I see you and it all comes rushing back at once."

He pulled his shirt over his head.

I reached for him, my hands finding the warm planes of his chest, and he caught my wrists gently, pressing soft kisses to each palm before guiding me toward the bed.

We lay down together unhurried, the city lights casting soft shadows across the sheets. He kissed me again, slow, deep, his hand tracing the curve of my waist, my hip, down to the back of my thigh.

"Tell me what you want," he said against my throat.

"You," I breathed. "Just you. Slowly."

He smiled against my skin.

"Slowly," he agreed.

His mouth moved down my body with deliberate patience, my collarbone, the swell of my breast, his tongue circling my nipple until I arched beneath him with a soft sound. He continued lower, unhurried, every touch designed to draw out sensation rather than rush toward it, his hands mapping my body like he had all the time in the world.

He reached the apex of my thighs and paused, looking up at me, waiting.

I nodded.

His mouth found me with the same slow deliberate patience, his tongue moving in long unhurried strokes that built pleasure gradually rather than chasing it. I gripped the sheets, my hips rising to meet him, soft moans escaping with every careful movement of his mouth against me.

"Bryan," I breathed. "Please."

He rose over me, his body settling between my thighs, his eyes finding mine in the soft city light.

"I want to look at you the whole time," he said quietly. "Is that okay?"

"Yes," I whispered.

He pushed into me slowly, so slowly I felt every inch of the stretch, every careful deliberate movement, his eyes never leaving mine. I gasped at the fullness of it, my hands finding his back, nails pressing into his skin as he settled fully inside me.

"Okay?" he murmured.

"More than okay."

He began to move, unhurried, deep, deliberate thrusts that built a rhythm meant to last rather than rush.

Each movement was a slow exploration, his forehead pressed to mine, our breaths mingling, the city lights painting everything in soft silver and amber.

"I love how you feel," he murmured. "I love watching your face when I'm inside you."

I wrapped my legs around him, drawing him deeper, and he groaned softly against my lips.

We moved together slowly for a long time, no urgency, no rush toward climax, just the deliberate exploration of each other, every touch and every thrust building something patient and consuming.

His hand found mine on the sheets and laced our fingers together, holding on as much as moving.

The pleasure built gradually, like a tide rising rather than a wave crashing, slow and inevitable and overwhelming in its patience.

"Bryan," I gasped, feeling the tension climbing. "I'm close."

"I know," he murmured. "Take your time. I'm not going anywhere."

The words echoed something he'd said before, I'm not going anywhere and this time it landed in the middle of pleasure so overwhelming that I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes, my body trembling beneath him as the orgasm built slowly and then crested completely, waves of release moving through me in long deep pulses.

He followed soon after, his rhythm finally breaking, a deep groan tearing from his throat as he found his own release, his forehead pressed to mine, our fingers still laced together on the sheets.

We lay tangled together afterward, breathing slowing gradually, the city lights still painting soft patterns across the ceiling.

He pressed a kiss to my temple.

"Stay the night," he murmured.

"Okay," I whispered.

My phone buzzed somewhere in the pile of clothes on the floor.

I felt Bryan go still beside me, his hand pausing where it had been tracing slow circles on my back.

I reached for it without thinking, glanced at the screen.

John.

I looked at his name for a long moment.

Then I set the phone face down on the nightstand without answering.

Bryan watched me do it. Said nothing.

I turned back into the warmth of him, his arm settling around me, his lips finding my hair.

"You don't have to explain," he said quietly.

"I know," I said. "I just didn't want to."

He pulled me closer.

The phone buzzed once more, then went quiet.

I closed my eyes.

And for the first time in a long time, I let myself simply be exactly where I was, without guilt threading through the edges of it, without John's name sitting in my chest like something I owed an answer to.

Just this room.

Just this warmth.

Just the choice I had finally, quietly, made.

There is a particular kind of peace

That arrives when you stop answering calls. from people who only call, when they sense they're losing something.

The phone rang.

She let it ring.

And in the silence that followed, something settled, that had been unsettled. for a very long time.
