Chapter 19 - Vindicated

Jen called on a Tuesday morning.

I stared at her name on my screen for a long moment before answering, p the first time in weeks her name had appeared without an access log or a suspicion attached to it. Just her name. Like old times.

I answered.

"Zoe." Her voice was thin. Shaky. Nothing like the warm easy chatter I'd grown so used to. "Please don't hang up."

I said nothing. Let her continue.

"I know what they found," she said. "The access logs. The suspension." A breath that sounded like it was costing her something. "I need you to know, I didn't plant anything. I never touched the dress, I never put anything in your station. I swear to you Zoe."

"Then explain the badge," I said evenly. "Explain eleven forty two."

A long silence.

"I was getting my own things from the rail near your station," she said finally. "I swear that's all it was. I didn't even think about it until they told me the timing matched."

"Jen." My voice stayed quiet. Controlled. "You've been talking to Eve."

The silence that followed told me everything the badge already had.

"It wasn't like that," she said, her voice cracking. "She was just, she'd ask about you sometimes. How you were doing. What was happening backstage. I didn't think, I didn't know what she was doing with it Zoe, I swear I didn't know."

"You didn't know," I repeated.

"I would never hurt you on purpose," she said. "You have to believe me."

I closed my eyes.

Thought about champagne handed to me with a warm smile. Tell me I look okay. Two years of dressing rooms and shared mirrors and the particular intimacy of women who got undressed in front of each other before every show.

"I believe that you didn't think you were hurting me," I said finally. "I don't think you sat down and planned to destroy my career.

I think you talked too much to the wrong person and didn't ask yourself why she wanted to know."

"Zoe—"

"But Jen." My voice hardened slightly. "Whether you meant it or not, it happened. And I have spent weeks looking at you, sitting beside you, trusting you, while you fed details about my life to a woman trying to end my career."

She was crying now. I could hear it.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I am so sorry."

"I know," I said quietly.

And I hung up.

Not cruelly. Not in anger.

Just, done.

There would be a time, maybe, far from now, where I could separate what Jen had done from who she had been to me before any of this started. But that time wasn't today.

Diane called two hours later.

"The drug test results are in," she said, no preamble, her voice carrying something I hadn't heard from her in weeks, relief.

I sat down slowly.

"And?" I said.

"Clean," Diane said. "Completely clean. No trace of the substance in your system whatsoever. Combined with the access log evidence pointing to unauthorized placement at your station, Zoe, you are fully cleared. Officially. On paper."

I exhaled, a long, shaking breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding for weeks.

"Harlow's team is releasing a statement this afternoon," Diane continued. "Clearing your name publicly, confirming the investigation found the substance was planted without your knowledge, and confirming the individual responsible has been identified and removed from their roster."

"They're naming her?" I asked.

"Not directly in the statement," Diane said. "But it won't take long for people to connect it. The truth doesn't stay quiet for long in this industry. You know that."

I pressed my hand against my chest, feeling my own heartbeat settling into something steadier than it had been in weeks.

"Thank you," I said softly.

"You did this," Diane said. "I just made the calls. You're the one who kept showing up."

After we hung up I sat in my apartment for a long while, just breathing.

Vindicated.

The word felt foreign and necessary all at once.

Bryan picked me up that evening to celebrate.

He'd suggested a quiet drive instead of anywhere public, let's just be somewhere that's ours for a bit, and I hadn't argued. We ended up parked along the overlook at the edge of the city, the lights spread out below us like something scattered and beautiful, the car quiet except for low music from the radio.

"You did it," he said, looking at me in the dim light. "You're cleared."

"We did it," I said. "You. Diane. Emma. All of you carrying me through this."

He reached over and brushed his thumb along my jaw.

"I'm just glad I get to look at you and not see the weight you've been carrying anymore," he said quietly.

I turned my face into his palm.

He leaned in slowly, his lips finding mine, and the kiss started gentle before deepening into something hungrier, his hand sliding to the back of my neck, pulling me closer across the console.

"I wish I could have you right now," he murmured against my lips, his voice low and rough. "Right here. Like this."

"Then kiss me," I breathed. "Keep kissing me."

He did.

His mouth moved against mine with growing urgency, and I shifted, sliding my hand down between us, finding the front of his jeans, feeling him already hard beneath the fabric. I palmed him through the denim and felt him groan softly into the kiss.

I unbuttoned his jeans slowly, slid my hand inside, and wrapped my fingers around him, drawing him free.

He was hot and hard in my grip, and I stroked him slowly, my thumb circling the head, drawing another low groan from his throat.

"Zoe," he breathed against my mouth.

His hand found the hem of my dress, sliding up my thigh, and I shifted to give him better access. His fingers found the edge of my underwear, traced along it slowly, teasing, before sliding beneath the fabric to find me already wet for him.

"God," he murmured. "You're soaked already."

He stroked along my folds slowly, deliberately, building the heat between my legs with maddening patience while I continued moving my hand along his length, matching his unhurried rhythm with my own.

He pushed a finger inside me slowly, and I gasped against his mouth, my hips rolling instinctively to meet him.

"I missed you," he said, his voice rough with want, his finger stroking deep inside me. "All these years. I'm so happy to finally have you back to myself. I won't mess this up this time. I promise you that."

His words landed somewhere deep, tangled up with the physical sensation building between my legs, and I tightened my grip around him in response, stroking faster.

He deepened the kiss, swallowing my soft moan as he added a second finger, stretching me slowly, his thumb finding my clit and circling it with practiced precision.

My hand kept working him in matching rhythm, both of us breathing hard now, the windows beginning to fog faintly with heat.

"Bryan," I gasped against his mouth.

"I know," he murmured. "I feel it too."

He curled his fingers inside me, finding the spot that made my whole body tighten, and I felt the orgasm building fast now, his thumb relentless against my clit, his fingers moving in perfect rhythm.

"Let go," he whispered against my lips. "I've got you."

The orgasm broke through me in waves, my whole body shuddering against the seat, my hand tightening around him as I came, and the sensation of my reaction seemed to undo him too, his hips jerking, a deep groan tearing from his throat as he found his own release into my hand, his forehead falling against my shoulder as we both came down slowly.

We sat there for a long moment, breathing hard, the city lights still spread out below us, the radio still playing low.

"Well," he said eventually, a soft laugh in his voice. "That's one way to celebrate."

I laughed too, breathless, genuine, lighter than I'd felt in months.

He pulled me close, pressing a kiss to my temple, his hand finding mine and lacing our fingers together.

"You're free now," he murmured. "Truly free. How does that feel?"

I looked out at the city lights, thought about Jen's broken voice on the phone, about Diane's relief, about the months of carrying something I could finally set down.

"Like the beginning of something," I said quietly. "Instead of the end."

He smiled against my hair.

"Good," he said. "Because I plan on being there for all of it."

Vindication doesn't always arrive with fireworks.

Sometimes it arrives quietly, a phone call confirming what you already knew, a test result clearing your name. a broken voice on the other end of the line, finally admitting the truth.

And sometimes, in the middle of finally being free, you find yourself in the arms of someone who never once doubted,

that you would be.
