Chapter 86 - Chapter 86: The Fall and 2 Years Later

If Giovanni is to be honest, he just hired Layla as the new secretary because she seems bubbly and easy to manipulate and, at the same time, competent enough to be able to do her job properly, which includes a lot of unexpected yet inevitable face-to-face encounters with danger. Besides that, Giovanni was at first indifferent and couldn't care less about Layla; in actuality, he even readied his 'HR' to make a list of other easily manipulable people, men and women. Giovanni doesn't care.

Well, besides being easily manipulated, Giovanni also needs a well-investigated background to make sure that no sleeper agent or double spy of any official organizations of the world government or his rival smaller syndicates is able to enter the core of his operations. This, alongside the 'being a confidant of a criminal boss's' greatest skill called 'shutting the fuck up when it's necessary' are the only requirements to be his secretary, which Layla has fulfilled.

According to all of Layla's public records and firsthand accounts of all the character references inside her biodata, she is not a simple woman, not because she has a mysterious background or because she appeared out of nowhere in her neighborhood in Viridian City. In fact, if background is to be talked about, Layla's backstory is relatively common: came from a barely surviving family and when she's 17 her single mother died due to overwork which forced her to do odd jobs, which led to her not being a conventional person because to meet end's meet, she has a lot of part time jobs that her house will only be lit for 4 hours from 1-4 before going out to work again.

When the HR read through her biodata alongside all of their investigative reports, they immediately knew that Layla would be very suitable for the job; after all, the job often requires someone who hates job hunting because, if not, with how many suspicious things are going on with their job, they will easily fear for their life and would prefer to be jobless instead of being breathless. Layla, someone who doesn't have a permanent job due to not having keen interest in the mainstream fields like Pokemon training, contests, or breeding, is of course the best candidate.

These are the only reasons why HR and ultimately Giovanni approved of Layla, as she is not specifically good at writing things and has to use a computer slowly and learn how to type fast eventually. This also made Giovanni indifferent to her despite her always smiling and sparkling eyes that seem to be out of place considering he is a world renowed crime boss that Interpol can't get a sniff off despite knowing his headquarters is in Viridian, as long as she's silent around other people and is obedient enough to not talk about anything anywhere near any green-haired policewomen, Giovanni can tolerate her presence and give her a huge salary.

However, everything changed when Giovanni, in a bout of carelessness, needed to disperse a team of negotiators in a barren area of Kanto hundreds of kilometers away from anyone's land to escape. He seems to have become careless at that time as he didn't realized that it was a setup by the Interpol to catch him and he can only lament as dozens of Whirlwhind attacks from flying types and Electrowebs from Ariadoses and Garvantulas pelted him in all sides with the only good thing being that the trucks they used to get in the barren land is yet to be compromised as Interpol compressed their team to not arouse suspicions and as long as he found a way to get their before either getting swept up or electrocuted, he would be fine.

Something that Giovanni thought he needed to work hard for until he heard the roars of engines of one of their trucks.

"BOOOOOAAAAAHHHH! HOW DO I STOP THIIIIIIIS!"

The one driving the truck is Layla, his secretary; she seems to have been swept by a Whirlwind and is lucky enough to survive with a wounded arm and heavily tattered clothes. After kicking everything she could kick with her two feet, Layla was finally able to kick the brakes right in front of Giovanni.

"HAH! I STOPPED IT! BOSS, GET IN!"

Giovanni was shocked and even apalled at this, however, he doesn't have time to say or do anything and instead just open the door of the driver's seat and pulled the gear shift into neutral before going inside and making Layla scoot over before swirving the truck and hitting the gas as fast as possible and ignoring the fumes of sands that goes inside the windowless truck to just drive straight out of the barren land as Giovanni knows that Interpol won't risk Pokemon habitats, so going inside a lush area with lots of Pokemon would most likely mean that their peril have passed.

"I TOLD YOU TO ORGANIZE A JAILBREAK FOR ME! WHY DID YOU GO BACK!? NOW THEY KNOW YOUR FACE TOO!"

As expected, the flying types and the two species of spider Pokemons alongside lots of Arcanines with Jennies and other policemen and women, won't let up as long as there's sand and no living Pokemons or humans in that regard detected in front of them. However, Layla's face at that time is still vividly fearful, as evident of her trembling eyes; however, her face also has the look of someone determined.

"I CAN'T LET THE PERSON WHO CHANGED MY LIFE DIE, BOSS!"

For a moment it seems as if air was drained out of the truck that even the sound of everything that was being thrown at them can't be heard and even when Giovanni was able to focus back on his objective of escaping, the silence between the two passengers can still be painfully heard and even after the two evidently survived their ordeal and spent many days walking in foot back to their base in Viridian City together, Giovanni wasn't still able to forget the words uttered by Layla.

Murderer, merciless, tyrant, boss, or just simply Giovanni (mostly by his late father), those are the words that defined his existence and also what people mostly defined him and never someone that changed their lives even if some of Giovanni's grunts were once homeless people that was able to get proper education and have the chance to have proper houses and everyday meals, which they would've never dreamed of if they never met another Team Rocket Grunt. Giovanni wasn't even considered a good adult, much like a person who can change someone's life.

Does she want a more dangerous life? That was once what he thought, but that can't be the case, as not even he wanted to go into dangerous situations, and unless Layla is a maniac, she would never see such a shift in lifestyle as beneficial.

_Interesting..._

Giovanni thought at that time, and at this time, he finally realized that the moment he found Layla, or the woman that names itself Layla, interesting and tried to learn more about her and later on pursue her and try to have a relationship more than that of a secretary and a boss.

____________

On the helipad of the last base forcefully taken by Team Rocket, which the syndicate, reduced to merely a few thousand members, had laced with traps deadly for both Pokemons and humans in a desperate attempt to prolong the time of freedom of their leader, known as the Sylph Co. headquarters, a man with a receding hairline stared at a military helicopter. His right foot is limping, bleeding from a large hole that seems to have been poked by a Pokemon; his left eye is bleeding from a taser he has to endure to go upstairs.

The man's Rhydon and Beedrill are on his back, visibly exhausted and way past their boiling point, yet still facing off any possible opponent for their master. Below the building, the man was in are many Interpol agents with their weapons that are supposed to be illagal to possess as they endager the life of both humans and Pokemons, blocking the whole peremeter for anyone except journalists that's broadcasting the final moment of Giovanni, the man in the helipad that grips a tied up old man in his other arm known as the owner of the building they were in, whom despite everyone and everything watching his eminent fall, continued to stare in the helicopter in front of him.

Inside it are two... 3 agents of Interpol, the third one being a woman with pixie-short, red hair in a duster with a bulging stomach. The woman Giovanni knows as Layla.

_So that's how it is..._

_She was planted in the poor areas of Viridian City's residential district and became someone with lots of part-time jobs and told the same story about herself again and again so every person that sees and knows her thinks and convinces themselves that that was the truth. Then, after some years, when she was able to establish her background, she made a spreadfire work applications to regular contractual jobs, with our obscure job application being her true target. Now, after getting the job, she remained a sleeper agent/double agent with a job to give me a weakness during the most crucial time like this..._

_She probably sacrificed the first chance of capturing me and saved me instead to make me interested in her... that led me to desperately try to uncover the true motive of Ben Dover for retiring in the long run, as I'm afraid that one lapse of information relay can endanger her and our child..._

As the two individuals, one an agent and the other the outsmarted boss of Indigo's most prominent syndicate, stared at each other, the latter smiled.

_My double agents never even got close to the office of the President of the world government or the Interpol..._

Giovanni knew how hard it is to penetrate the streamlined and perfected security of any public organization in the world, especially with the existence of Psychic-type Pokémon. It was already a very good feat to have one punch through the Kanto Research Center complex (though in their mixed medical unit) and the communication department of Interpol.

Giovanni sighed.

"Take care of our child."

After saying that, he didn't say anything more, nor did he use his cocktail party hearing, and turned around for his Pokemons to announce that intruders in the helipad had arrived, which was also the cue for the military helicopter to leave the area.

"I will."

As Giovanni heard the sound of the military helicopter retreating, the fallen, in anything but form, leader of Team Rocket sighed once again as he saw two boys who pulled out Pokeballs from their holsters. One is an orange-haired boy in a black, damaged shirt, and the other is a black-haired boy with a burnt baseball cap in his hand.

"Ah, Indigo Champion Blue and projected challenger Red! So we meet again! The President and I are discussing a vital business proposition. Keep your nose out of grown-up matters... Or, experience a world of pain!"

____________

"Your CBC, urinalysis, fecalysis, drug test, and general medical certificate, alongside an on-site general physical fitness test, IQ test, as well as an EQ test, have been deemed appropriate by the panel of experts to approve your request to be an official Pokemon Trainer. As you already have a starter Pokemon at the start of your journey, you will not be provided with a standard starter Pokemon and instead will need to fend for yourself with your partner at the start of your journey; that is not to say that you can't catch any starters in the wild."

"The most basic rules in training are: don't let wild Pokemons that fainted through a battle with you unattended. Pokemon Rangers have the right to tase you on sight using the guidance of the fainted Pokemon if you didn't bring them to a Pokemon Center immediately. You also shouldn't litter disposable items in forests, and make sure to store every pollutant in your bag. Rangers can now arrest you because of littering. Pokeball debris is excusable as they're designed to melt in a short span given they are shattered to pieces, but anything else won't do."

"Lastly, be safe and have fun. Any specific rules about tournaments among other non-standard encounters are all in the virtual guidebook and the Pokedex, do you understand?"

January 15, Monday, 3 years and 7 months since the body of Anthony Dover has a new owner, the start of the newest Pokemon League Challenge season unofficially known as the 2nd year of Red's championship. Dr. Melissa Edison, a former Pokemon Trainer and full-time field researcher, presented a polyvinyl ID and a red device. The ID has 'World Government' and 'Indigo Plateau' in the upper middle area, while below them, on the right, is 'Pokemon Trainer' alongside the profile of one of the many new trainers of the current season: Anthony Dover.

The red device is obviously a Pokedex, both of which are grabbed by the boy who's now supposed to possess them.

"Of course, Dr. Edison."
