Chapter XI: Turning the Tides
The Siege Begins: Family Moments
When the intense, high-stakes tactical briefing finally drew to a close, Tenzin found his heavy boots carrying him through the quiet, softly lit corridors of Air Temple Island toward his family's private quarters. The suffocating weight of global leadership pressed relentlessly across his shoulders—he was a city councilman, the last living master of airbending, a protective father, and now, quite possibly, the final line of defense standing between Republic City and utter annihilation.
He gently slid open the paper-and-wood shoji door to his bedroom and found a scene that instantly melted the cold dread in his chest. Pema and all three of their children—Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo—were huddled together asleep in a single large bed, having clearly tried and failed to stay awake waiting for his return. The fragile, innocent sight made his heart clench fiercely with an overwhelming mixture of profound love and paralyzing fear for what the coming days might unleash upon their home.
Stepping softly across the woven floorboards, Tenzin settled quietly on the edge of the mattress. He placed his hand tenderly over Pema's growing stomach, feeling the steady, reassuring rhythm of the new life developing within her. Both Pema and Jinora stirred instantly at his familiar touch, their eyes blinking open in the dim light.
"Daddy, you're finally home," Jinora murmured softly, sitting up and rubbing the sleep from her eyes with small knuckles. "We tried so hard to wait up for you. Is Korra going to be okay?"
"Yes, she's going to be fine, sweetie," Tenzin replied, offering them a reassuring smile as he reached out to scoop sleepy little Ikki into his arms as she began to wake, pulling her into a tight, warm embrace.
"I was really scared, Daddy," Ikki mumbled into his shoulder, her small hands clutching the lapels of his robes. "I thought maybe she wasn't ever coming back."
"I am so sorry you were frightened," Tenzin whispered, his voice dropping into the deep, soothing fatherly warmth that came so naturally to him, a stark contrast to his usual formal, public demeanor. "Things are very complicated right now, but I promise you... everything is going to be alright."
Even as those comforting words slipped past his lips, a cold shadow of doubt crept into the back of his mind. Standing in a world where cosmic tyrants, dimensional warriors, and a violent domestic revolution were rapidly converging on their doorstep, he desperately wondered if he had just made a promise he wouldn't be able to keep.
The Morning Briefing
Breaking the Fast
The following morning found the expansive dining hall on Air Temple Island crowded with a wildly eclectic mix of exhausted individuals: traditional elemental benders, non-bending mechanics, formidable Saiyan warriors, and the recently arrived temporal operatives. At the center of the long wooden table, Korra was attacking her massive breakfast spread with her characteristic, aggressive enthusiasm, rapidly making up for the calories burned during her brutal ordeal in the mountains.
"Mmm! This food tastes absolutely amazing, Pema," Korra mumbled enthusiastically between large bites of steaming rice and eggs. "I'm finally starting to feel like myself again."
"We are just so incredibly thankful you made it home safely," Pema replied with a warm, relieved smile as she moved around the table, collecting Korra's neatly cleaned plates.
"Please, let me help you with those," Asami offered quickly, standing up from her seat to assist the heavily pregnant woman.
As the two women moved quietly toward the adjacent kitchen, Tenzin's expression slowly shifted, growing deeply serious. He folded his hands atop the table, leaning forward slightly. "Korra, I realize you have been through a traumatic ordeal, but I need to know exactly what transpired. Every detail."
Korra set her chopsticks down carefully on the ceramic rest. Her relaxed demeanor evaporated instantly, replaced by a sharp, focused intensity. "Well, first off... Tarrlok isn't who he claims to be. His real name is Noatak. He is Yakone's son."
The casual announcement sent a visible shockwave rippling around the table. Tenzin and Chief Lin Beifong both stiffened, exchanging a look of absolute, stunned horror.
"It all makes terrifying sense now," Lin said grimly, her jaw tight. "That is precisely how Tarrlok managed to bloodbend all of us without the aid of a full moon. He inherited his father's genetic mutation."
"But how did you manage to escape a bloodbender of that caliber?" Tenzin pressed forward, his brow furrowed deeply. "And where is Tarrlok now?"
"Amon captured him," Korra replied, her expression darkening as the memory surfaced. "And then... Amon took his bending away permanently."
"What?" Tenzin's sharp exclamation instantly drew the attention of everyone else in the room.
"Yeah. He just showed up out of nowhere at the cabin," Korra explained, a slight shudder running through her shoulders. "He almost got his hands on me, too."
Beneath the heavy oak table, Tohra's hand silently found Korra's, his large fingers lacing gently through hers and squeezing in quiet, absolute support. The subtle gesture didn't go completely unnoticed by a few of the sharper eyes in the room, but no one dared comment on it.
"This is profoundly disturbing news," Tenzin said, stroking his long beard pensively as he processed the tactical implications. "Amon is becoming dangerously emboldened. Taking out a sitting councilman, successfully ambushing and almost capturing the Avatar... I fear Amon is rapidly entering the final phase of his endgame."
Anxious, concerned glances were traded back and forth around the breakfast table as the crushing weight of this revelation settled heavily over the group.
Kitchen Tensions
Inside the kitchen, Pema and Asami worked side-by-side in comfortable, companionable silence for a few minutes before Pema suddenly doubled over against the counter, letting out a sharp, unexpected cry of pain.
"Pema! Are you alright?" Asami asked instantly, dropping a stack of plates and grabbing the older woman's shoulder in genuine concern.
"The baby is... just kicking. Very, very hard, that's all. I am fine," Pema managed to say through gritted teeth, though her complexion had gone alarmingly pale.
"Should I go get Tenzin?" Asami asked, her dark eyes wide with worry.
"No, no reason to worry him right now, it's nothing major," Pema insisted weakly, though her knuckles were white as she gripped the marble countertop for support.
Before Asami could press the issue, the swinging doors pushed open, and Mako walked into the kitchen carrying a small porcelain teapot. "Hey, can I get some more hot water in here? Korra needs some more tea."
The casual mention of Korra's name made a subtle shadow flash across Asami's elegant features—it wasn't quite jealousy, but rather a deeply complicated, painful mixture of conflicting emotions. She hadn't been blind. She had seen exactly how Mako had reacted to the news of Korra's violent kidnapping, the raw, unhinged desperation in his voice, the way he had stubbornly insisted on remaining glued to her bedside when they finally brought her back.
But she had also clearly seen the undeniable way Korra and Tohra looked at each other now. The heavy crystal pendant that absolutely never left Korra's neck. The casual, unbreakable intimacy of their joined hands under the table just moments ago.
"Here," Asami said, forcing her voice to remain carefully neutral as she handed Mako a steaming kettle of hot water. "For Korra."
Mako paused, his brow furrowing as he seemed to catch the sharp undercurrent in her tone. "Asami, is everything okay with you?"
"Everything is perfectly fine," she replied smoothly, though the words came out tight and clipped.
Pema, possessing a mother's keen sense for brewing emotional storms, winced slightly. "I am going to step out for some fresh air, just in case you two need a moment to talk." She hurried out of the kitchen as fast as she could manage, despite her obvious physical discomfort.
"Seriously, what is wrong?" Mako asked, setting the empty teapot down on the counter.
Asami turned slowly to face him fully, her expression unreadable. "I need to know something, Mako, and I need you to be completely honest with me for once. Do you have romantic feelings for Korra?"
The direct question clearly caught him entirely off guard. "What? No! I mean—she's my friend and teammate! She was violently abducted by a psychotic bloodbender! How exactly was I supposed to act?"
"Like her supportive friend. Not like..." Asami trailed off, struggling to articulate the tangled mess of what she had observed over the last week. "You were completely unglued and desperate when she went missing. And then when we finally found her, the way you were looking at her..."
"Asami, you're overthinking this—"
"And I know about the kiss," Asami stated quietly, her voice steady but laced with hurt. "Bolin told me."
Mako's face rapidly cycled through a dozen different expressions—raw shock, deep guilt, and defensive frustration. "That was... that was just a mistake! We were both highly stressed and confused; it didn't mean anything real."
"Didn't it?" Asami challenged him, stepping closer. "Because from where I am standing, it looks like you harbor very real feelings for her, whether you have the courage to admit it to yourself or not."
Mako ran a frustrated hand violently through his spiky hair, clearly struggling to string a coherent defense together. "Look, things are completely crazy right now with Amon and everything else. Can we please just deal with our relationship problems later?"
"There might not be any relationship left to worry about later," Asami said softly, her voice carrying a heavy, echoing note of finality as she turned and walked right past him out of the kitchen doors.
"Asami, wait!" Mako called after her, but the swinging doors had already shut. She was gone.
An Unexpected Favor
The Courtyard Request
Out in the sunlit stone courtyard of Air Temple Island, Tenzin found himself nervously pacing back and forth along the edge of the cliff. He jumped slightly as Chief Lin Beifong approached quietly from behind, her sharp footsteps clicking against the stone flags.
"Lin... um, I need to ask you a rather delicate favor," Tenzin began, his usual immaculate, composed political demeanor slipping away into something uncomfortably vulnerable. "It would honestly mean the world to me, but I am entirely aware it could make for a potentially awkward situation—"
"Spit it out already!" Lin interrupted with her characteristic, no-nonsense bluntness, crossing her arms over her metal-plated chest.
"Will you stay here and keep a protective eye on Pema and the children while I go meet with the Council?" Tenzin rushed out, holding up a hand. "With everything that has transpired over the last twenty-four hours, I need absolute peace of mind knowing my family is guarded by the finest warrior in this city."
Lin's stern expression softened almost imperceptibly, a faint ghost of a smile touching the corner of her mouth. "Relax, Tenzin. Of course I'll help. You've got enough to juggle, old friend."
Before Tenzin could express his gratitude, Pema stepped out from the arched doorway, carrying a giggling Meelo on her hip and looking like she had overheard the tail end of the exchange. "I didn't realize you two were holding secret meetings out here," she remarked with a playfully raised eyebrow and barely concealed suspicion.
"Pema! Yes, Lin has graciously agreed to help out around the temple grounds and keep things secure while I am away at City Hall," Tenzin explained quickly, perhaps a bit too fast.
"Oh! Well, thank you, Lin," Pema's relief was entirely genuine, despite her previous hesitation. "I could certainly use an extra pair of hands today. In fact... would you mind giving this little monster a bath? He is absolutely filthy."
Meelo instantly stuck out his tongue and blew a wet, noisy raspberry straight at the Chief, howling with laughter.
As Tenzin hastily mounted Oogi, calling out his departure, Lin hoisted the squirming, dirty child out at arm's length with a look of sheer disgust, shouting, "This is most definitely not what I signed up for!"
"Thank you, Lin! You're a lifesaver!" Tenzin yelled back, already urging the massive sky bison up into the morning air. "Yip yip!"
Left stranded alone in the courtyard with Meelo, who instantly announced at the top of his lungs, "I gotta poo! Really, really bad!", Lin didn't hesitate. With a flick of her wrist, she metalbent a neat, secure cable around his waist to keep the child hovering safely at arm's length without direct physical contact. Her look of profound suffering drew loud, amused giggles from the nearby Air Acolytes.
The Siege Begins
Across Republic City, Amon's violent revolution was finally reaching its deafening crescendo. City council members were hunted down and captured in a wave of coordinated strikes that proved not only meticulous planning, but terrifying inside access. At City Hall, Tenzin narrowly escaped a violent ambush by a squad of heavily armed, disguised Equalists, his furious airbending sweeps the only thing preventing his immediate capture.
Stumbling back to catch his breath with the assistance of a terrified council page, Tenzin watched in horror as a series of heavy, thunderous explosions rocked the downtown core. Stepping out onto the rooftop balcony, he stared in sheer disbelief as a massive armada of Equalist airships broke through the smog-choked horizon, beginning a systematic bombardment of the bay.
"This... this cannot be happening," he whispered, his knuckles turning white against the stone railing.
"The political leadership of Republic City rests entirely in your hands now, Master Tenzin," the page said solemnly, stepping back.
Back on Air Temple Island, Lin stood rigidly alongside Tenzin's young children and a handful of White Lotus sentries as the ominous silhouette of the airship fleet crept over the distant skyline.
"All right, kids. Show's over. Inside, right now," she barked, her metal armor clinking as she dropped into a defensive posture.
At that exact moment, Korra, Tohra, Mako, Bolin, and Asami burst headlong into the central courtyard, drawn by the roaring concussions echoing across the bay.
"We heard the explosions—what on earth is happening?" Korra demanded, her eyes locked on the burning skyline.
"Republic City is under full-scale attack," Lin replied grimly.
A split second later, the atmosphere shimmered violently as the Time Patrollers materialized out of thin air. Tarro, Daikon, Scarlett, and Aiko radiated an unmistakable, battle-ready aura. Winter, Eleryc, and Jinjer stepped out from the shadows beside them moments later, their powerful Saiyan energy signatures flaring brightly into the open air as they locked onto the approaching threats.
"This is it," Winter said quietly, her pale eyes fixed on the horizon. "The exact endgame we calculated."
Tohra's emerald aura flickered to life around his frame as he slid smoothly to Korra's side, his gaze intense. "Are you ready for this?"
Korra turned her head, offering him a fierce, unshakable grin as her fingers slipped into his hand, squeezing tight. "As ready as I'll ever be."
Aboard the command bridge of the lead Equalist airship, Hiroshi Sato stood tall beside Amon, watching the lower districts burn through the reinforced glass. "I have dreamed of this day for so many years."
"Yes," Amon replied smoothly, his featureless porcelain mask tilted toward the rising plumes of smoke over Republic City. "The hour has finally come for the Equalists to claim what is ours."
The Rescue and the Defense
The Abandoned Satomobile
Team Avatar—operating without the Saiyans and Time Patrollers, who had already deployed to scout the outer harbor perimeter—commandeered Tenzin's private motorboat to cross the choppy waters of Republic City's bay. Their destination was the alleyway where Korra had unceremoniously abandoned her sleek Satomobile during her frantic escape days prior.
The vehicle was sitting precisely where she had left it: jammed aggressively against a steel streetlamp, its front bumper crumpled, and plastered top-to-bottom with a dense stack of bright yellow parking violations.
"Wow. Truly a masterclass in parallel parking," Asami observed dryly, stepping out of the boat and crossing her arms.
"Hey, cut me some slack! You guys got yourselves arrested and left me completely stranded!" Korra protested, throwing her hands up in defense. "I made it explicitly clear from day one that I have zero idea how to drive these mechanical nightmares."
"Well, all things considered, you did an amazing job just getting it here!" Bolin chimed in encouragingly, jogging over to rip the stack of parking tickets off the windshield. "Though... how are we supposed to pay off all these municipal fines?"
Mako snatched the yellow paper slips out of Bolin's hands and casually shoved them into a nearby streetlamp's open wiring box, instantly reducing them to ash with a flick of his fingers. "Relax. The city is literally burning around us. The police department has a few bigger priorities to worry about today."
Asami retrieved a spare high-voltage electrified glove from the trunk compartment, slipping it on before sliding gracefully into the driver's seat. When Mako instinctively moved to open the front passenger door and sit beside her, Asami paused, turning her head to give him a cold, pointed look. "Why don't you take the back seat?"
"Fine," Mako muttered, biting back a sigh as he stepped around and climbed into the rear row, sandwiching himself between Korra and Bolin.
Korra acutely felt the heavy, suffocating tension vibrating between her teammates, but wisely chose to keep her mouth shut, focusing entirely on the looming crisis ahead. Her turbulent relationship with Tohra had crystallized her emotional landscape in ways she hadn't anticipated—she still deeply cared for Mako as a trusted comrade and brother-in-arms, but the romantic ambiguity was gone. He was a friend, and nothing more.
They located Tenzin downtown just minutes after a fierce skirmish with a squad of Equalist mecha tanks. Thanks to their timely intervention, the wrecked suits lay smoking in the street, leaving the airbending master standing safe amidst the debris.
"Are you alright?" Korra asked, sprinting over to his side.
"I am completely unharmed. Thank you, kids," Tenzin said, catching his breath. "Another thirty seconds and I would have been dragged straight into Amon's custody."
"Uh, guys... you're going to want to look at this," Mako interrupted, pointing urgently down the ruined boulevard toward the bay.
Drifting low and ominously over the water, a massive Equalist airship was slowly descending straight toward the shoreline of Air Temple Island.
"Oh, no," Tenzin breathed, pure horror gripping his chest.
The Defense of Air Temple Island
Back on the island, Chief Lin Beifong stood planted like a monolith in the central courtyard as dozens of elite chi-blockers dropped from the belly of the descending airship on rappel lines. The White Lotus sentries stationed at the temple charged forward bravely, but they were quickly overwhelmed by the ruthless, highly coordinated Equalist assault.
"Everyone inside the sanctuary, right now! Stay calm!" Lin roared, her metal cables lashing out to snap three attackers off their feet.
Suddenly, a sharp cry of intense pain echoed from the temple steps, causing everyone to freeze. Pema doubled over, clutching her stomach as she tried to walk.
"Pull it together, Pema! Didn't I just explicitly yell for everyone to remain calm?" Lin barked over the din of battle, swinging an earth pillar to block a volley of shock darts.
"Mommy! What's wrong?" little Ikki asked, her voice cracking with terror.
"The baby... the baby is coming right now!" Pema gasped, her face draining of color.
"Oh, come on! Not today, little bro!" Meelo shrieked in absolute dismay.
As a frantic group of temple midwives rushed Pema through the heavy doors, the combat outside exploded into absolute chaos. The Lieutenant surged up the stone steps brandishing his high-voltage kali sticks, and Lin met him head-on with a blinding display of devastating metalbending, throwing up steel plates and lashing out with her whip-like cables.
The Lieutenant, however, proved exceptionally slippery, dodging her strikes and closing the distance with lethal speed. Just as he lunged forward to discharge a paralyzing bolt straight into Lin's chest, a streak of turquoise rushed down from the rafters.
"Get away from my dad's grumpy ex-girlfriend!" Jinora shouted heroically.
She swooped low on her glider, executing a perfectly timed, concentrated airblast that caught the Lieutenant square in the chest and sent him flying backward off the terrace, rocketing over the edge of the roof into the gardens below.
"Jinora! You kids have no business being out here!" Lin yelled over the wind.
Before Lin could recover, Ikki sped past on an air scooter, bowling over two charging chi-blockers. "Nobody messes with our home!"
From directly above, Meelo dropped out of a tree canopy like a furry green missile. "Taste my absolute fury!"
In a move that left everyone utterly stunned, Meelo executed a concentrated, highly toxic burst of flatulence-bending right into the face of a lead attacker, instantly dropping the dazed Equalist before spinning around to clear the remaining troopers with rapid-fire air slaps.
Lin stared at the young airbender, her jaw practically hitting the stone floor. "...Never mind. Carry on."
When Tenzin and Team Avatar burst through the gates seconds later, panting and ready for war, Tenzin immediately dropped to his knees, scooping his children into a frantic, protective embrace. "Thank the spirits... are you all a hundred percent okay?"
"We totally kicked the bad guys' butts, Daddy!" Meelo announced proudly from atop his father's shoulders.
Tenzin spun around, glaring at the metalbender. "Lin? You actually let my children fight? Do you have any idea how close—"
"I would have been turned into fried toast if it weren't for your kids," Lin interrupted flatly, crossing her arms. "You should be proud. You taught them well."
Before Tenzin could offer a blistering retort, a sharp, healthy cry of a newborn infant echoed out from the sanctuary doors. Tenzin rushed inside, pushing open the bedroom doors to find Pema smiling exhaustedly against the pillows, cradling a tiny bundle wrapped in cloth.
"Meet our new son," Pema whispered softly, her eyes shining as she gently passed the infant into Tenzin's trembling hands.
"Hello there," Tenzin whispered, his voice thick with emotion as the tiny newborn blinked open dark eyes and cooed softly in response.
The older children immediately swarmed the bedside, peering down with immense curiosity. "A baby brother? Well, honestly, it's about time he showed up," Meelo declared authoritatively.
"We already picked out a name," Pema said happily, resting her head against Tenzin's shoulder. "Rohan."
Standing quietly in the doorway, Korra watched the tender scene unfold with a deep, bittersweet ache of joy and sorrow. A moment later, Tohra materialized silently beside her, his warm, solid presence offering an anchor of quiet comfort.
"I hate to ruin this moment," Korra said softly, her eyes hardening as she looked out past the balcony. "But we've got company. More airships are inbound."
Difficult Choices and Lin's Sacrifice
The Decision to Evacuate
Outside in the stone courtyard, the remaining defenders hastily gathered under the mounting roar of approaching engines as a fresh wave of Equalist airships darkened the sky above Air Temple Island.
"What is your play, Tenzin?" Korra asked, stepping forward with her fists clenched and ready for a fight.
Tenzin glanced back over his shoulder toward the sanctuary doors where his wife and newborn child were resting. The raw, defensive panic in his eyes was unmistakable. "I need to secure my family and get them as far away from this war zone as humanly possible. If Amon ever got his hands on my children... I cannot even bear to think about it."
"If you are flying out of here, I am coming with you," Lin stated instantly, her tone leaving zero room for debate.
"But Lin—"
"No arguments, Tenzin. You and your children are the last surviving airbenders on this earth. There is absolutely no way in hell I am sitting back and letting Amon steal your bending away."
"Thank you, Lin," Tenzin said, a deep, solemn gratitude in his voice. He turned his focus sharply back to the young Avatar. "Korra, I want you to slip off this island and lie low for the time being."
"I am not running away and giving up," Korra protested stubbornly, her jaw set.
Beside her, Tohra's hand moved smoothly to the small of her back, a solid, grounding touch of absolute support.
"I am not asking you to quit," Tenzin reassured her. "I managed to fire off a distress signal to the United Forces before the relay was cut. They will be arriving in the harbor soon. Once my family is tucked away safely, I will turn right around and return. With military reinforcements at our backs, we can finally turn the tide of this war."
"So what you are telling me is... we have to play the waiting game and be patient," Korra sighed heavily, her shoulders dropping.
Tenzin reached out, resting a heavy, fatherly hand on her shoulder. "You are finally learning strategic restraint."
They embraced quickly, both of them acutely aware of the mortal danger waiting on the horizon. "Stay alive, Tenzin."
"You as well, Korra."
As Oogi launched heavily into the air with Tenzin's family clinging to his saddle, two fast-attack Equalist airships peeled away from the fleet to give chase. Simultaneously, more landing craft dropped onto the island's shores, forcing Team Avatar and the remaining fighters to scramble for an exit.
"Everyone, pile on!" Korra shouted, vaulting onto Naga's back. Tohra vaulted up right behind her, his strong arms wrapping securely around her waist. Mako, Bolin, and Asami scrambled up onto the great polar bear dog's flanks just as a squad of chi-blockers closed in.
"Move, girl!" Korra roared, urging Naga forward.
As they plunged off the cliff toward the churning water below, the Lieutenant materialized to intercept them. With a single sweep of her massive paw, Naga batted him hard into a stone pillar. Korra threw her hands out, rapidly waterbending a dense, protective air-and-water bubble around her friends just as they hit the freezing harbor surface, vanishing beneath the waves.
Lin's Sacrifice
High above the bay, aboard Oogi's racing saddle, the fleeing airbender family watched in mounting, gut-wrenching terror as the two Equalist pursuit airships rapidly closed the distance.
"They are gaining on us too fast!" Lin shouted over the screaming wind.
"Push harder, Oogi! Faster!" Tenzin urged, patting the giant bison's neck.
When the leading airship launched a massive woven capture net straight toward them, Lin reacted with blinding speed. Snapping her metal cables forward, she shredded the net to ribbons before it could snare the saddle. But looking back, her sharp tactical mind calculated the cruel mathematics of their flight: Oogi was carrying too much weight, including a newborn infant. They wouldn't make the mainland.
Her eyes drifted over Tenzin's terrified family—the young children who held the literal future of the air nomad heritage in their veins, and the tiny, breathing infant who had entered the world barely twenty minutes ago.
"Whatever happens next, do not turn this bison around!" Lin ordered sharply.
"Lin, what in the spirits are you planning?!" Tenzin cried out, horrified.
Before he could grab her, she was already moving. Launching herself off the edge of Oogi's saddle, she fired her metal cables straight into the hull of the nearest pursuing airship. She reeled herself upward with brutal force, tearing viciously through the vessel's ventral plating until a secondary fuel line ruptured, sending a violent explosion rippling through the cabin and spiraling the warship crashing down into the dark waters below.
Not pausing for a breath, Lin ripped a heavy steel panel from the wrecked hull, using it as a improvised springboard to launch herself straight onto the deck of the second airship. She began tearing frantically at its control relays with her bare hands, but the crew reacted with terrifying speed. Dozens of Equalist troopers swarmed her from all sides, firing heavy weighted bolas that wrapped tightly around her limbs and shooting high-voltage charges into her body until her muscles locked and she collapsed into unconsciousness.
From the safety of Oogi's saddle, little Meelo watched the smoking airship veer away in awe. "That lady... is my absolute hero," he whispered softly.
"Yes," Tenzin said, his voice thick with unshed tears as he stared back at the empty sky. "Yes, she is."
The Cost of Defiance
Out on the cold, rain-slicked landing deck of an airship hovering directly over the conquered ruins of Air Temple Island, Chief Lin Beifong was dragged roughly to her knees before the masked leader of the revolution.
Amon stepped forward, his dark eyes visible behind the pale, expressionless porcelain mask. "Tell me precisely where the Avatar has fled, and I will graciously allow you to keep your bending."
Lin let out a harsh, broken laugh, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the steel grating. "I wouldn't tell you a damn thing, you masked monster."
"Very well."
As Amon stepped slowly behind her, his heavy gloved hands gripping her shoulders, Lin closed her eyes, holding her head high with unyielding pride. She felt his cold thumbs press hard against her forehead, and a split second later, a wave of horrific, unnatural nausea washed through her brain as she felt something fundamental, ancient, and vital being brutally ripped away from her soul.
Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed heavily onto the metal floor—no longer a metalbender, no longer the fierce Chief of Police, but just another broken victim of the war.
A Message of Hope
The Fleet Approaches
Aboard the iron-clad command bridge of the lead battleship in the United Forces armada, General Iroh stood rigidly at the forward bow, his sharp silhouette cutting through the sea spray in a striking echo of his legendary namesake grandfather.
"General, I just received an encrypted wire transmission from the Avatar," a communications officer reported, rushing up with a printed sheet. "She confirms that Amon and his Equalist forces have seized total control of the mainland. How do you wish to reply?"
Iroh's expression was carved from stone, his eyes locked on the gray horizon. "Send word back immediately. Tell her the United Forces fleet will be dropping anchor in these waters in exactly three days. And add that I personally look forward to reclaiming Republic City... together."
"As you wish, sir."
As the officer hurried off to relay the message, Iroh narrowed his gaze toward the distant smog-choked skyline where Republic City burned. Three days. They had seventy-two hours to cross open water, run any coastal blockades, and smash through whatever traps Amon had waiting.
Regrouping in the Shadows
Half a world away within the damp, echoing confines of a massive storm drainage pipe near the industrial bay, Korra and her expanded coalition—including Tohra and the rest of the Saiyan warriors who had managed to slip away from the island and rendezvous with them—watched through the concrete opening as Air Temple Island was systematically swarmed and occupied by Equalist landing craft.
"They've taken everything," Korra whispered, her voice cracking with exhaustion as she stared out at the flashing searchlights.
Behind her, Tohra stepped close, his strong arms sliding securely around her waist to pull her back against his chest in a silent, anchoring display of absolute support.
"Not everything," Winter corrected gently, her pale silver hair gleaming softly even in the gloomy shadows of the pipe. "They have not taken your spirit. They have not taken your fierce determination. And they certainly have not taken the people who stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you in the dark."
"Our temporal sensors are tracking Cooler's energy signature shifting across the upper districts," Tarro added, stepping forward from the group. "He is using the widespread panic as camouflage, but he hasn't launched his primary offensive yet."
"Which means we still have a crucial window to organize our countermeasures," Scarlett finished, her crimson tail swaying thoughtfully.
A few yards away, Mako watched the intimate scene between Korra and Tohra unfold with a quiet, settling weight in his chest. The bitter fog of denial that had clouded his mind for weeks finally evaporated completely. He could see it with crystal clarity now—Korra had found a profound, unshakeable connection with Tohra that transcended anything he could have ever offered her. Watching the way they naturally balanced each other out, a profound realization hit him: his lingering attachment to Korra had largely been driven by proximity and what she represented, rather than who they were together.
A soft brush of fabric drew his attention as Asami stepped up beside him, her expression far softer and more vulnerable than it had been back in the temple kitchen. "Holding up okay over there?" she asked quietly.
Mako looked down at her, a genuine, unforced smile touching his lips. "Yeah," he said, realizing with a rush of relief that he actually meant it. "I think I finally am."
Hesitantly, Asami reached out, her fingers brushing against his hand. He didn't hesitate—he turned his palm upward and squeezed back firmly. Whatever apocalyptic challenges lay ahead of them in the next seventy-two days, at least he could face them with absolute clarity in his own heart.
"Alright, so what's the game plan?" Bolin piped up, flashing a nervous grin to break the crushing tension. "Because hiding out in a giant concrete sewer pipe isn't exactly my idea of a five-star headquarters."
Despite the grim reality of their situation, a ripple of genuine laughter broke out among the group. Korra turned around, letting out a soft breath as she looked across her assembled allies—benders and non-benders, humans and legendary Saiyan warriors, temporal guardians and newly minted revolutionaries.
"We survive for three full days until General Iroh's fleet arrives," Korra declared, her voice ringing clear and strong off the curved concrete walls. "We track down and protect as many displaced citizens as we possibly can. We stay one step ahead of both Amon's zealots and Cooler's shadow army. And we prove to this city that even when the dark wins every battle, hope refuses to die."
At her throat, the ancient crystal pendant flared with a warm, steady luminescence, and Tohra's powerful emerald aura harmonized seamlessly with her surging Avatar energy, lighting up the dark pipe like the dawn.
"Three days," Korra repeated, a fierce, razor-sharp grin returning to her face. "Then we take our city back."
The Wrath of the Legendary Super Saiyan
The Siege of Air Temple Island: Flashback
Earlier in the day, during the ferocious opening waves of the Equalist assault on Air Temple Island, Korra found herself violently cut off from the main defense line. Trapped in a stone corridor near the lower meditation pavilion, she was completely cornered by a heavily armed squad of elite chi-blockers. She had been fiercely holding her own, weaving a blistering combination of rapid-fire firebending and earth walls to keep them at bay, but their overwhelming numbers and synchronized flanking maneuvers were rapidly wearing her down.
"Surrender, Avatar!" the lead chi-blocker shouted over the din of battle, his knuckles crackling with high-voltage electrified gloves. "Amon wants you brought in alive, but he never specified you had to be conscious!"
"I'd love to see you try!" Korra snarled back, her eyes flashing as she wound up a devastating arc of flame.
But in that split second of distraction, three operatives moved in a lightning-fast, synchronized formation—one lunging high, two sliding low, their insulated gloves reaching precisely for the pressure points designed to paralyze her nervous system. Korra whipped around to counter, but she was trapped between too many vectors of attack.
The lead assailant's glove was mere inches from her shoulder when he suddenly froze stiff. Not out of fear—though that came a second later—but because of an apocalyptic, suffocating pressure that instantly flooded the courtyard like a tidal wave of physical force.
The ambient temperature plummeted and soared simultaneously. The very air grew thick, heavy, and violently charged with an energy that made the survival instincts of every single combatant scream in absolute terror. Even Korra, who had witnessed Tohra's power firsthand, felt her breath catch violently in her throat at the terrifying scale of the aura erupting from behind her.
"Get. Away. From. Her."
Tohra's voice was utterly unrecognizable—dropped down several octaves into a gravelly, monstrous baritone carrying unearthly harmonics that vibrated right through the stone foundations. The Equalists whipped around, and what they saw made several veteran troopers take involuntary, trembling steps backward.
His eyes had entirely inverted from their normal dark brown to a blazing, piercing yellow-green that seemed to ignite with an inner nuclear fire. His musculature swelled with frightening density, heavy veins bulging fiercely across his arms and neck as his ki boiled upward. But the most terrifying sight was his aura: violent, jagged columns of deep emerald energy tore wildly at the earth, shattering flagstones and causing loose boulders to float upward into the air in open defiance of gravity.
This was not the disciplined, focused power he had displayed in the pro-bending ring. This was pure, unadulterated, primal wrath incarnate.
"Target acquired," one of the chi-blockers choked into his shoulder radio, his voice cracking with panic. "The primary enhanced combatant has entered the zone. Requesting immediate tactical backup—"
He never finished the transmission. Tohra moved, and to the eyes of the terrified squad, he simply ceased to exist in one place and materialized in another, operating at a velocity entirely beyond human tracking.
The first chi-blocker was sent hurtling backward by a casual, backhanded swipe of Tohra's arm that launched him clear across the central courtyard, skipping over the cliffs and down into the freezing harbor far below. The second tried to dive-roll out of the way, only to find Tohra already standing behind him, casually lifting the grown man by his reinforced collar and tossing him into his retreating comrades like a bowling ball striking a rack of pins.
"You threatened her," Tohra growled, his voice carrying that bone-shaking otherworldly resonance. "You put your filthy hands near the woman I love."
An Equalist lieutenant, braver or perhaps simply more foolish than his subordinates, whipped out a weighted bola cable, firing it directly at Tohra's chest. The Saiyan warrior didn't even bother to dodge; he simply flexed his torso, and the volatile emerald ki cocoon exploding off his skin completely disintegrated the steel cable mid-air, throwing a shockwave that sent the lieutenant skidding backward across the gravel.
"Electrified gloves," Tohra murmured, his glowing yellow-green eyes locking onto a trembling chi-blocker who was desperately crawling backward. "You use those to torture benders. To brutalize people who cannot defend themselves against your machinery."
He flickered forward again, materializing instantly over the fallen trooper. With a terrifying display of micro-control that should have been physically impossible in his berserk state, Tohra clamped two massive fingers around the man's wrist, exerting just enough pressure to instantly short-circuit and explode the glove's internal power cells.
"Let me show you what true power actually looks like."
He didn't strike the man—he didn't need to. The crushing, suffocating weight of his divine ki, channeled with razor-sharp surgical precision, was enough to completely break the soldier's morale. The chi-blocker's legs instantly gave out, collapsing face-first into the dirt in unconditional surrender to a predator his deepest instincts recognized as an apex force of nature.
Amon's Observation
High above the burning island, aboard the darkened command bridge of the lead Equalist airship, Amon watched the display unfold through high-powered binocular lenses, his expression hidden safely behind the cold porcelain mask.
"The enhanced combatants are tearing through our vanguard," the Lieutenant reported, having just fled the surface in a retreat. "Casualties are escalating rapidly. Sir... whatever these outsiders are, they operate on a physics entirely unknown to this world."
"I am well aware," Amon replied, his voice uncharacteristically stripped of its calm, measured cadence. Through the lenses, he watched as Tohra—still radiating his wrathful, emerald aura—systematically dismantled squad after squad of elite fighters without executing a single lethal blow, yet leaving every enemy too utterly broken or terrified to stand.
What made the tactical reality even worse was that Tohra was far from an isolated anomaly. Winter flowed across the battlefield with lethal, balletic grace, her silver hair whipping behind her as she unleashed pinpoint ki blasts to disable Equalist armored vehicles without harming the operators inside. Side-by-side, Eleryc and Jinjer operated as a seamless wall of localized destruction, intercepting every reinforcement wave before they could cross the bridges.
Above them all, Tarro, Daikon, Scarlett, and Aiko dominated the airspace, effortlessly intercepting the airships with flight capabilities entirely independent of any known bender technology.
"These people are not benders," Amon muttered quietly to himself, his gloved hands gripping the brass railing. "They are something entirely outside the equation. Something that completely shatters the fundamental paradigm of bender oppression that this entire revolution was built upon."
"Sir?" the Lieutenant asked, blinking behind his own mask.
"Do you not see it?" Amon's knuckles turned white on the binoculars. "Traditional benders derive their dominance from a genetic lottery—an inherent biological inequality that creates division. But these warriors... their power is self-generated. They draw their strength from an internal well of pure energy. They could be born benders or non-benders, and it would change nothing, because their capabilities transcend that entire sociopolitical divide."
He watched grimly as Tohra, having thoroughly cleared the perimeter around Korra, finally let his wild aura recede, his glowing eyes returning to normal as he immediately dropped to his knees to check her for injuries.
"And worse than their strength," Amon continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous chill, "is their unity. Benders and non-benders fighting side by side, protecting one another unconditionally. The Avatar herself is intimately bonded to one of them. It invalidates every foundational truth I have preached to the citizens of this city."
"What are your direct orders, sir?" the Lieutenant pressed nervously.
Amon stood in silence for a long, heavy moment, his brilliant, calculated mind rapidly recalibrating the strategy. These enhanced warriors were devastatingly powerful individually, but they possessed a critical vulnerability: emotional attachments. They fought to protect others, prioritized civilian safety, and held back from unleashing total annihilation on their foes.
"Order a full withdrawal of the ground assault on the island," Amon finally commanded, turning away from the viewing glass. "Not a retreat—a disciplined tactical repositioning. Let them savor this localized victory."
"Sir, we were moments away from securing the Avatar—"
"And we were moments away from losing our entire ground division to entities who could sink this island into the sea if provoked," Amon interrupted sharply. "No. We wait. We adjust our calculus. We strike when these outsiders are isolated from their charges, and when the Avatar herself is exposed."
He stepped away from the window, the harsh interior lights gleaming off his featureless mask. "These enhanced combatants are a formidable obstacle, yes. But every obstacle has a fatal flaw. We simply need the patience to find it."
Aftermath and Shadows
The Aftermath of the Storm
Back on the battered stone courtyard of Air Temple Island, Tohra pulled Korra close, his fingers cupping her face with a desperate, trembling intensity that laid bare how deeply the recent terror had shaken him.
"I am okay," she murmured softly, pressing her own hands over his to anchor him. "You made it back in time, Tohra. You always manage to get here when it matters."
"When I felt that you were in mortal danger... when I sensed their numbers closing around you," Tohra's voice still resonated with a deep, gravelly echo from his transformation, "the Ikari state just completely took over. All I could perceive, all I cared about, was shielding you from harm."
"I noticed," Korra whispered with a faint, reassuring smile. "You were terrifying. In a fiercely protective, extremely attractive kind of way."
Despite the heavy atmosphere, a dry, self-deprecating laugh escaped Tohra's lips. "I am deeply sorry you had to witness that side of me. The Wrathful form—it isn't as entirely feral as the full legendary mutation, but it is still raw, volatile energy."
"It saved my life," Korra replied simply, her blue eyes shining with absolute trust. "And it sent a crystal-clear message to anyone watching: whoever threatens me has to answer to you."
"Speaking of messages," Winter said, stepping out from the shadows of the colonnade with Tenzin walking closely behind her, "Amon just ordered an immediate, total retreat. They are pulling every unit off the island right now."
"That makes zero tactical sense," Tenzin observed instantly, his sharp political mind immediately smelling a trap. "They had overwhelming numbers and complete operational momentum. Why would they break off the attack now?"
Winter's expression remained grim and unyielding. "Because he witnessed firsthand what our vanguard is capable of. Because he calculated that taking this island would bleed his forces dry. And because..." She paused, casting a sharp glance toward Tohra, "he now knows you are here, and he understands the scale of power you bring to this conflict."
"So... did we actually win?" Mako asked hopefully, jogging over alongside Bolin and Asami.
"We won this specific skirmish," Korra corrected quietly, leaning back into Tohra's solid, protective embrace. "But something tells me Amon is already drawing up plans for the next strike. And he will be ready for Tohra's power when he does."
High above the bay, the Equalist airships drifted away in tight, disciplined formations—not a panicked rout, but a cold, calculated strategic withdrawal. As Team Avatar and their Saiyan allies set to work tending to the wounded and assessing the structural damage, a heavy, sinking intuition settled over them all: Amon's retreat was infinitely more dangerous than his assault had ever been.
Amon's Calculation
Miles away aboard the darkened command bridge of a retreating airship, Amon stood alone in his private quarters, having finally unclasped and removed his mask to reveal the pale, scarred features beneath. His piercing water tribe eyes were narrowed in deep, clinical concentration as he played back high-definition optical recordings captured by his scout drones.
He paused the projection on a single frame of Tohra's wrathful transformation—the blazing yellow-green eyes, the jagged emerald aura, and the terrifying wall of kinetic energy radiating from every pixel.
"A formidable obstacle," he murmured softly. "But far from an insurmountable one."
He fast-forwarded the footage to the moments immediately following the clash, studying how Tohra's power instantly receded the second Korra was safe, and how his very first instinct was to check her physical condition rather than pursue the fleeing enemy.
"Attachment," Amon noted, a cold analytical satisfaction creeping into his voice. "Devotion. The exact emotional anchor that makes him fight so ferociously to protect her is also his single greatest vulnerability."
He slipped his porcelain mask back over his face, his reflection in the polished steel panel showing only the mythical revolutionary leader he projected to the world.
"If I cannot break his power through direct confrontation," he whispered to his own reflection, "then I will ensure that very power becomes his undoing."
Present Day: The Strategy in the Shadows
"That was the exact turning point when Amon changed his entire playbook," Korra explained to her assembled coalition inside the damp concrete drainage pipe. "He stopped trying to capture me through direct force and started hunting for the exact moments when Tohra and the others were physically separated from me."
"Which directly led to Tarrlok's staged kidnapping attempt," Tohra added grimly, his arm tightening protectively around Korra's shoulders. "He must have known about my bond with you—known that dragging you off to some remote hideout would inevitably pull me out of the city's defense grid."
"And it very nearly succeeded," Korra admitted, looking down at her hands. "If I hadn't managed to break through to the Avatar State, if you hadn't tracked my pendant across the bay..."
"But I did track it," Tohra said firmly, his gaze meeting hers with absolute certainty. "And I always will. That is what Amon fundamentally fails to understand about our connection—it is not a weakness to be exploited. It is the absolute wellspring of our greatest strength."
Mako, standing a few feet away and listening with a newly matured perspective, finally broke his silence. "He saw your wrathful state that day. He knows what you are capable of in that form. Why hasn't he tried to engineer specific countermeasures?"
"Because there are none," Tarro answered from across the pipe. "At least, none that do not rely on cosmic-scale technology or forces that simply do not exist on this planet. Amon's smartest move is to avoid a direct, head-on war with Tohra altogether."
"Which is precisely why he is focusing on seizing political and physical control of the city while we are forced to scatter our forces," Scarlett concluded, her crimson tail swaying thoughtfully.
"Then we need to outthink him," Korra declared, a surge of fierce determination ringing clearly in her voice. "We have three days until General Iroh's fleet arrives. Three days to secure civilians, dismantle his local supply lines, and prove to the people of Republic City that the Avatar has not abandoned them."
"Three days to prove that love and connection aren't liabilities," Tohra added softly, his emerald eyes locking onto Korra's blue ones. "They are the only things keeping this world from tearing itself apart."
The ancient crystal pendant resting against Korra's chest flared with a warm, steady glow—a silent testament to the bond that had transformed a legendary Super Saiyan into a protector rather than a destroyer, and forged an Avatar into something far greater than a mere bridge between worlds.
An Alliance of Necessity: The Meeting
The abandoned warehouse nestled deep within Republic City's industrial district had been selected specifically for its utter isolation. Following the implementation of Amon's draconian citywide curfew, this sector was completely dead—no municipal patrols, no wandering citizens, and most importantly, no enhanced combatants capable of sensing anomalous energy signatures.
Amon arrived completely alone, exactly as instructed by the anonymous contact who had reached out through encrypted radio frequencies. The initial message had been short and chilling: I possess intelligence regarding your enhanced combatant problem. And a definitive solution.
The cavernous interior of the warehouse was pitch black, save for a single, stark overhead light fixture casting a harsh circle of illumination onto the concrete floor below. Amon stepped into the light cautiously, his waterbending senses extended to catch any hidden ambushes. But what he felt instead was an atmospheric chill—a heavy, suffocating presence unlike anything he had ever encountered. It lacked the explosive, organic warmth of the Saiyan ki; instead, it felt cold, hyper-calculated, and infinitely more dangerous.
"You are punctual," a voice echoed smoothly from the surrounding darkness. The tone was haughty, aristocratic, carrying the casual arrogance of someone accustomed to absolute obedience.
"I prefer to survey a battlefield before I step into it," Amon replied evenly, his masked face turning toward the shadows. "Identify yourself. And state your business."
A figure stepped forward out of the gloom into the halo of light, and Amon's hand instinctively twitched toward the water pouch concealed within his cloak—before freezing mid-motion as his brain processed the horrifying visual data before him.
The entity standing before him was humanoid, yet undeniably alien. Deep purple and stark white chitinous plates covered a heavily muscled frame, featuring a distinctive, sleek head structure reminiscent of a deep-sea predator, yet radiating an aura of high-tech and cosmic dominion. But what truly paralyzed Amon's instincts were the eyes—brilliant, hyper-intelligent, and filled with an ancient, casual cruelty that made even the revolutionary leader's hardened psyche experience a sudden jolt of unease.
"My name is Cooler," the alien stated, a cold amusement playing across his expression at Amon's physical reaction. "And as for what I want... that is a rather layered question. Perhaps we should begin with what you desire, and where our respective ambitions might happen to align."
"You are one of them," Amon stated flatly, his strategic mind rapidly connecting the dots. "One of the enhanced outsiders who have systematically crippled my operations."
"Technically speaking, no," Cooler corrected, gliding closer with predatory, effortless grace. "The targets you have been struggling against—those crude Saiyans and their self-righteous Time Patroller associates—are, shall we say, standing on the opposite side of several very ancient blood feuds. I, however, share your profound irritation regarding their interference."
With a casual flick of his wrist, Cooler projected a compact holographic display directly into the air between them. The flickering blue light illuminated images of Tohra locked in his wrathful state, Winter channeling divine ki, and Time Patrollers engaging Equalist shock troops.
"Your entire revolution is being systematically dismantled by beings operating completely outside the sociopolitical framework of your primitive world," Cooler continued smoothly. "Beings whose raw power makes your petty bender-versus-non-bender civil war look quaintly provincial."
"And you are offering to assist in eliminating them?" Amon asked skeptically, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Out of some sudden philanthropic impulse?"
Cooler let out a sharp, frigid laugh. "Philanthropy has nothing to do with it. I have deeply personal motivations for wanting those Saiyans eradicated. The fact that their removal happens to advance your little domestic crusade is merely... a convenient byproduct."
The Education of a Revolutionary
Amon studied the alien interloper with intense scrutiny. "Before we discuss any formal pact, I require a complete breakdown of what we are facing. The warrior you named Tohra—during our assault on Air Temple Island, he underwent a drastic physiological shift. His eyes altered, his power multiplied exponentially, and my entire strike team was forced to retreat to avoid total annihilation."
"Ah yes, the Ikari manifestation," Cooler said, sounding like an academic discussing a well-documented biological specimen. "Or as some prefer, the Wrathful state. What you witnessed was merely a localized appetizer of what a true Saiyan is capable of achieving."
Cooler manipulated the hologram, cycling through complex anatomical schematics and historical battle archives. "Saiyans are a parasitic warrior race originating from a ruined world. They possess a unique genetic anomaly: their biological power scales upward dynamically through combat, triggered most explosively when they are pushed to the brink of death or exposed to extreme emotional trauma."
"Emotional trauma," Amon repeated, cataloging the data. "Such as rage?"
"Precisely." Cooler's expression hardened slightly. "The transformation you observed—the Wrathful state—is catalyzed by fury, yet remains tethered to conscious control. It multiplies their base capacity significantly. But it is merely a stepping stone toward something far more catastrophic."
The holographic projection shifted, displaying a towering humanoid figure enveloped in a blinding golden aura, crowned with spiky, luminous hair. "This is the Super Saiyan transformation—a terrifying myth among their kind that, unfortunately, turned out to be entirely real. It amplifies their baseline power by a staggering factor of fifty."
Amon's eyes widened behind the blank porcelain of his mask. "Fifty times their normal output?"
"And that is merely the threshold tier," Cooler continued darkly. "There are subsequent evolutionary stages beyond that, each exponentially more destructive than the last. But your particular adversary possesses a genetic aberration even more dangerous."
The hologram morphed once more, projecting a simulation of Tohra, but with grossly magnified muscle mass, wilder hair, and an aura crackling with unhinged, apocalyptic fury.
"This is the apex threat you are dealing with: the Legendary Super Saiyan. A genetic mutation that surfaces once every thousand years. Where normal Super Saiyans eventually encounter biological ceilings, the Legendary variant has virtually none. Its power compounds infinitely as long as the transformation is sustained, feeding directly on the user's unbridled malice and combat instincts."
"Are you suggesting Tohra could evolve far beyond the limits of what I have already witnessed?" Amon asked quietly.
"Could?" Cooler chuckled darkly. "He will. It is an absolute mathematical certainty. It is only a matter of time before an environmental trigger pushes him past his mental threshold into that absolute state. And when he does..." The hologram projected a simulated animation of planetary crusts cracking and entire civilizations dissolving into ash. "Let us simply say that your precious Republic City would cease to exist in any physical or political sense."
The Exploitation of Weakness
Amon stood in dead silence for a long moment, processing the terrifying scope of the information. "If he is truly that destructive, why has he not unleashed this power already? What checks his restraint?"
"An exceptionally astute question," Cooler replied, clearly gratified by Amon's tactical acumen. "And one that exposes both his greatest tactical strength and his single fatal vulnerability."
The hologram shifted once more, displaying surreptitiously gathered surveillance footage: Tohra and Korra standing side-by-side, their intimate physical proximity, and the precise moments where Tohra's volatile energy stabilized entirely in her presence.
"Love," Cooler spat the word out as though it were a foul taste on his tongue. "The Avatar—your world's supposed spiritual bridge—has forged an emotional tether with the Legendary Super Saiyan. And through some bizarre anomaly, that connection has fundamentally rewired the programming of his transformation."
"Altered it in what manner?"
"Historically, Legendary Super Saiyans were entirely consumed by their own infinite power," Cooler explained. "The blind rage overwhelmed conscious thought, reducing them into mindless engines of absolute destruction. But Tohra's emotional bond with the Avatar has given that primal fury a target. A specific vector. Instead of slaughtering everything within a thousand-mile radius, he channels that limitless energy into absolute protection."
"Which renders him infinitely more dangerous as a localized defender," Amon observed.
"To direct combat engagements, yes," Cooler agreed. "However, it simultaneously creates a brilliant tactical opening. His catastrophic power is now inextricably bound to his emotional investment in the Avatar. Threaten her, and you unlock his maximum output—but within a controlled, protective framework. Yet, if you strategically separate them... if you force him into a binary choice between safeguarding her life and securing his objectives..."
"Then we can neutralize him without ever engaging him in a direct, unwinnable clash," Amon finished.
"Now you are thinking like a true conqueror."
The Terms of the Pact
Cooler dismissed the floating holographic projector with a wave of his hand, stepping directly into Amon's personal space.
"Here is my proposed framework: You continue your populist revolution. Seize control of the municipal infrastructure, round up high-profile benders, execute your cleansing of the city. Frankly, I care nothing for the internal politics of this mudball."
"Mudball?" Amon's voice carried a sharp, offended edge.
"You are locked in a primitive squabble over who gets to manipulate dirt and water," Cooler said dismissively. "My empire was subjugating star systems when your ancestors were still discovering combustion. Yes, primitive."
He raised a clawed hand to cut off Amon's retort. "However, primitive does not equate to useless. Your ongoing revolution generates valuable chaos, draws massive public attention, and most importantly—it forces the Saiyans and their temporal allies into a defensive posture. They cannot focus their full resources on tracking my movements while they are frantically playing bodyguard to a helpless civilian population."
"And what precisely are you doing while they are distracted?" Amon demanded.
"I am preparing," Cooler stated simply. "I am recalibrating my fleets, establishing staging coordinates, and waiting for the optimal convergence. When the time is right—when you have pushed the Avatar and her little coalition to the absolute breaking point—I strike. Not at the city itself, but at the Saiyans directly."
"What do you stand to gain from this?"
Cooler's smile widened into a chilling, predatory grin. "Saiyans assassinated my father. They dragged my family's legacy through the dirt. Furthermore, the existence of an uncontrolled Legendary Super Saiyan—one who might actually stabilize that evolutionary mutation—represents an intolerable threat to my ultimate galactic dominance. I secure the personal satisfaction of erasing a bloodline I have despised for decades."
"And should your preparations fail?" Amon challenged. "Should Tohra's power prove insurmountable even for you?"
"Then we both share a mutual catastrophe," Cooler admitted with surprising, brutal candor. "However, I possess distinct tactical advantages that you do not. I understand Saiyan psychology, their biological triggers, and their combat habits. I command technology capable of dampening ki emissions, alongside weaponry engineered explicitly to disrupt their transformations. Above all else—I possess centuries of direct combat experience against their kind."
"You have fought a Legendary Super Saiyan before?"
"Briefly," Cooler muttered, his expression darkening into a menacing scowl. "It did not conclude favorably for anyone present. Which is precisely why, on this occasion, I am exercising absolute patience. I will not engage until every strategic variable is tilted in my favor. And you are going to assist me in manufacturing those exact advantages."
The Execution of the Plan
"What specific actions does this alliance require of me?" Amon asked, his strategic mind already mapping out the operational logistics.
Cooler resumed his slow, rhythmic pacing across the concrete floor, his hands locked behind his back. "First, you must accelerate your operations. Continue rounding up prominent benders. This serves a triple purpose: it advances your revolution's public narrative, it forces the Avatar to spread her attention dangerously thin, and it potentially provides us with high-value hostages."
"Hostages for what purpose?"
"Should I require leverage to force the Avatar's hand—or better yet, to manufacture a crisis that forces the Legendary Super Saiyan into a blind, grief-stricken transformation—we will have the necessary catalyst at our disposal."
"You intend to use hostages to force his transformation so you can analyze his combat limits," Amon deduced.
"Among other objectives." Cooler halted his pacing, spinning around to fix Amon with a piercing stare. "Second, I require intelligence. Your Equalist network has thoroughly infiltrated the underbelly of this city. I need precise data regarding the Time Patrollers—their operational capabilities, their patrol vectors, and the location of their safehouses."
"The Time Patrollers," Amon repeated. "You referenced them earlier. What are their origins?"
"Interdimensional interlopers who police temporal anomalies," Cooler explained with clear disdain. "The specific variants you have encountered thus far include Tarro and Daikon—pure-blooded warriors from an alternate timeline. Scarlett and her associate Aiko—mutant variants with anomalous genetic profiles. And most problematically, Eleryc and Jinjer."
"What makes those two anomalies worthy of note?"
Cooler's expression tightened into a complex scowl. "They are... problematic. Reincarnated iterations of a localized deity named Zamasu, an entity obsessed with cleansing the cosmos of mortal life. They have ostensibly overwritten that programming through familial bonds, but the terrifying magnitude of their divine power remains intact."
"So we are contending with reformed gods," Amon stated flatly.
"Reformed being the operative keyword, which implies they remain susceptible to precise psychological manipulation," Cooler replied. "However, there is one final variable you must account for—Zero."
"Zero?"
"My own flesh and blood," Cooler spat with undisguised venom. "He was dragged into this timeline by the same temporal rift that brought the others. Unlike them, he answers to no authority but his own. He is completely unpredictable. At times he assists the defenders; at others, he pursues entirely independent agendas. If fortune favors us, he will remain entirely out of our theater of operations."
"And if fortune does not favor us?"
"Then we absorb an additional cosmic-tier combatant into our threat matrix," Cooler conceded. "However, familial discipline is my specialty. Leave him to me should he interfere."
The Final Warning
Amon stood in silence for a long interval, weighing the severe risks against the immense strategic utility of this unholy alliance. Finally, he extended a gloved hand forward. "Then we have an accord. I drive my revolution forward, you construct your countermeasures, and when the hour is ripe, we synchronize our strikes to permanently liquidate the Saiyan threat."
Cooler stared at the extended hand with detached amusement before slowly clasping it with his own. His grip was impossibly cold, iron-hard, serving as a brutal physical reminder of the alien power standing before him.
"One final advisory before we conclude," Cooler murmured, not immediately releasing his grip. "Your unique technique for stripping a bender's spiritual connection—it is genuinely fascinating. A refined form of neurological chi-blocking that permanently severs the bridge between internal spiritual energy and elemental manifestation."
"You have been analyzing my capabilities," Amon observed, his tone neutral.
"Naturally," Cooler replied smoothly. "Information is the bedrock of conquest. But it raises an intriguing hypothesis: if your technique can sever the conduit to bending, could it theoretically be re-engineered to target ki? To permanently paralyze a Saiyan's capacity to transform?"
Amon's mind raced, calculating the profound biological implications. "I... cannot say for certain. The spiritual mechanics differ fundamentally. Bending relies on environmental resonance. Ki appears to be entirely self-generated internal energy."
"An avenue well worth exploring," Cooler noted thoughtfully. "If we could engineer a biological agent or neural technique to permanently suppress a Saiyan's transformation baseline, it would render our campaign infinitely simpler."
"I will require experimental subjects," Amon replied, his scientific pragmatism taking over. "Live specimens whose internal energy signatures I can dissect."
"That can be provisioned," Cooler agreed. "Though I strongly advise initiating trials with inferior specimens. Attempting to tamper with Tohra's biological circuitry prematurely would result in instantaneous, catastrophic failure."
"Agreed."
As the clandestine meeting drew to its close, Cooler turned and melted back into the absolute darkness of the warehouse shadows. "I will re-establish contact when the operational phase shifts. Until then, maintain your pressure. Seize the city, capture the Avatar if the opportunity presents itself, but do not inflict terminal damage. She is exponentially more valuable to our endgame as leverage than as a corpse."
"And the Time Patrollers?"
"Observe their movements. Catalog their patterns. But strictly avoid direct engagements unless tactical necessity dictates it. They are hardened veterans of multi-versal conflicts. Your standard chi-blockers, competent though they may be, will serve as nothing more than target practice."
"I understand."
Cooler paused at the outer edge of the harsh overhead light. "One last caution, Amon. I possess boundless patience when it serves my grand design, but I harbor zero tolerance for incompetence or betrayal. If you compromise this operation through personal ambition or operational slovenliness, you will quickly discover that losing one's bending is an absolute mercy compared to the torments I can inflict."
"Heeded," Amon replied evenly, refusing to display a flicker of intimidation despite the lethality underlying the alien's threats.
With a final ripple of displaced air, the alien vanished into the dark, his physical presence evaporating so completely that Amon might easily have convinced himself the entire encounter was a hallucination—were it not for the lingering sub-zero chill in the air and the high-density data crystal resting on a crate where Cooler had left it, loaded with classified Saiyan biological profiles.
Amon reached out, picking up the crystal, his mind already formulating protocols to integrate the data into his underground laboratories. An alliance with an interstellar tyrant was far from ideal, but in the crucible of war, one utilized whatever weapons lay within reach.
And if Cooler ultimately proved to be a liability rather than an asset? Well, Amon had successfully dismantled the most powerful benders on the planet. One more corpse wouldn't alter the equation.
Whispers Across the Cosmos
Back on Air Temple Island, amidst the quiet ruins of the lower courtyards, Winter suddenly froze mid-step, her divine Kai senses reacting violently to a massive disturbance rippling through the cosmic tapestry.
Tohra instantly materialized beside her, his body language snapping to high alert. "What is it? What do you sense?"
"The fundamental threads of fate have just shifted," Winter whispered, her silver hair shimmering faintly with unspent divine energy. "Someone has just forged a pact that violates every law of temporal balance."
"Cooler?" Tohra asked sharply, emerald ki beginning to spark visibly across his knuckles.
"Likely him, but the signature is broader," Winter warned. "Someone local, wielding immense ideological power, has just made a choice that will trigger a cascading catastrophe across this dimension."
Korra hurried over, her own Avatar senses picking up the heavy atmospheric pressure drop. "Was it Amon?"
"It aligns with his movements," Tohra said grimly, his jaw tightening. "An anarchist revolutionary joining forces with an interstellar warlord—they both seek absolute subjugation, merely operating at different scales."
"Then we prepare for a two-front war," Korra declared, her hand slipping smoothly into Tohra's. "Because whatever nightmares they are cooking up in the dark, we will face them together."
The crystal pendant resting between them pulsed with a steady, brilliant warmth—a living reminder of the bond that had already reshaped their reality, and which would ultimately determine whether this world survived what was coming next.
