Chapter 166 - #166

Lately, the turmoil across the Nine Realms had been ceaseless. Internal rebellions from the Frost Giants and Dwarves flared up without end.

Beyond their borders, Hell had secretly attempted to invade Earth twice. Even the Chitauri fleets were mobilizing with reckless abandon.

All of this posed a direct challenge to Asgard's authority. Anyone with a discerning eye could see that as Odin weakened, the golden realm's power waned with him.

Every empire experiences cycles of prosperity and decline. The All-Father, who once conquered everything in his path, was now just a tired old man.

He bore the heavy curse of his immense lifespan, his body riddled with the hidden wounds of cosmic laws. There were days he could barely lift his spear, Gungnir.

This weakness was the root of the Nine Realms' turbulence. It was also the main reason Odin constantly compromised.

Even if he entered the Odinsleep and forcibly squeezed out his remaining divine reserves, he might only have one or two true fights left in him.

Thinking of this, Odin's gaze shifted toward Luna, a flicker of genuine murderous intent crossing his eye. The emergence of demigods in the Nine Realms was a highly unstable variable.

He briefly considered eliminating these two children, erasing this weakened demigod while he still possessed the strength to do so.

The image of the benevolent monarch had always been a carefully crafted illusion. To unify the Nine Realms, the God King had marched over mountains of corpses and oceans of blood.

It was only the passage of time that allowed Odin to bury those bloody memories so deeply.

Ultimately, Odin let out a heavy breath and discarded the thought. Even if he was confident he could kill Luna, a life-and-death struggle between demigods would devastate Asgard.

But the potential collateral damage wasn't the only thing staying his hand. Just as the urge to kill peaked, the image of a raven-haired woman flashed through his mind.

She was a woman covered in blood, her eyes radiating pure, unadulterated hatred toward him. She was strong, young, and consumed by an insatiable desire for power.

Beyond her raw strength and ambition, she possessed terrifying patience. She was hiding in the dark, biding her time for the perfect strike.

It reminded Odin of his own youth, when he waited for the absolute best moment to dethrone Ymir, the ancestor of the Frost Giants. He simply couldn't risk playing into her hands.

Because of her looming threat, wasting his remaining strength on a demigod from Midgard was completely meaningless.

Besides, keeping Luna alive might eventually benefit his two sons. Even if it didn't, he knew the dark future he had glimpsed from the Spring of Wisdom was inevitable.

He had exhausted himself trying to avert the prophecy of Ragnarok, going as far as cruelly exiling his own flesh and blood. Yet, his desperate actions had only accelerated the prophecy's arrival.

"Selene, what did you mean when you said that only I can cure this girl's affliction?" Odin asked, looking back at Luna.

Since he had abandoned his killing intent, he easily brushed past Luna's earlier disrespectful tone.

"You'll understand exactly what I mean once you feel it for yourself," Luna replied cryptically.

Odin hesitated for a fraction of a second before stepping forward. He reached out and grasped Jane Foster's hand.

"Don't touch me, it's going to hurt you!" Jane panicked, startled by the sudden contact.

This was Thor's father, the legendary King of Asgard. If he got hurt because of her, it would be an absolute disaster.

Her mind instantly flashed to cheesy soap operas where the wealthy patriarch tries to split up his son and the poor girlfriend, only to end up in a coma.

That frantic spike of anxiety caused Jane's spirit to violently fluctuate. The sudden emotional spike acted as a catalyst, instantly activating the Aether dormant in her veins.

Naturally, Jane's soap opera fears were entirely unfounded. The absolute second the Aether flared to life, Odin sensed the unnatural shift.

His expression hardened, and he released a cold grunt. A surge of brilliant, golden divine power channeled from his hand directly into Jane's body, forcefully suppressing the Aether's violent reaction.

"Impossible. Where did this come from?" Odin demanded, his face grim despite having restrained the volatile energy.

"Don't look at me, I was just about to ask you the same thing," Luna said, holding her hands up defensively. "By all accounts, this thing should be the spoils of the second-generation God King."

Odin remained silent for a long moment. "Come with me," he finally instructed, waving the group to follow him.

Following Odin's lead, they quickly arrived at Asgard's grand archives. The repository was impossibly vast, with towering bookshelves stretching as far as the eye could see.

When Ethan tilted his head to look at the vaulted ceiling, he didn't see stone or wood. Instead, a breathtaking expanse of the cosmos was projected directly above them.

It wasn't a standard star map. It was a tangible, shifting projection of Yggdrasil, the World Tree.

Surrounding the cosmic tree were nine distinct, glowing portals of different colors. They were slowly drifting, clearly beginning to overlap with one another.

"The Convergence of the Nine Realms occurs once every five thousand years," Odin sighed, his single eye reflecting the cosmic display. "It looks beautiful, but every cycle brings nothing but endless chaos."

Odin pulled his gaze away and pressed his palm against a massive, crystalline terminal. As his golden energy pulsed into the stone, a book on a distant shelf began to emit a matching light.

The heavy tome smoothly floated off the shelf, gliding through the air until it rested in Odin's hands.

He opened the ancient text and began recounting the history of his father, Bor. He spoke of the brutal war against the Dark Elves during a Convergence several epochs ago.

"That conflict was catastrophic," Odin explained, looking grimly at the group. "In the end, the realm of Svartalfheim was reduced to a barren wasteland, and the Dark Elves were entirely eradicated."

"Are you absolutely certain the Dark Elves were wiped out?" Luna challenged, eyeing the text skeptically. "Is that book actually reliable?"

"It's a well-known fact that Asgard loves to let the victors write the history books," she continued smoothly.

In the modern texts, Odin was portrayed as a purely benevolent king. Luna, who had lived through the eras, knew exactly how ruthlessly the Frost Giants had been neutered by Odin's so-called peace treaties.

Meanwhile, light-years away in the ruined realm of Svartalfheim, a colossal, pitch-black vessel descended from the toxic sky.

The monolithic ship resembled a jagged blade slicing into the earth. As its heavy ramp lowered, a towering humanoid figure with pale skin and pointed ears stepped out into the ash.

It was Malekith, the absolute ruler of the Dark Elves. After slumbering for countless epochs, the distant, unmistakable energy signature of the Aether had violently ripped him from his sleep.

For thousands of years, Malekith refused to believe he had truly lost that ancient war. After all, he was still breathing, while Bor had turned to dust long ago.

But as he set foot on his blighted homeworld, staring out at a dead wasteland devoid of a single living soul, his long-held convictions wavered.

"I will have my revenge," Malekith snarled, his voice dripping with malice as he crushed a handful of dead soil in his fist. "Asgard reduced our home to a graveyard, and now I will ensure they pay the exact same price."

He turned back to his lieutenant. "Algrim, what is the status of the Kurse?"

"My king, the chosen warrior has successfully infiltrated Asgard," the armored Dark Elf replied. "He slipped in unnoticed alongside a fresh batch of prisoners taken from the recent rebellions."

"Then we strike," Malekith ordered, his eyes burning with renewed fanaticism. "Only by reclaiming the Aether can we rebuild our homeland."

He turned on his heel and marched back into the dark belly of the ship.

"Heh. It seems Odin is terrified of me getting bored," Loki muttered from inside his pristine energy cell. "He just keeps bringing me new playmates."

He watched with mild amusement as a battered group of marauders and rebels were marched into the holding block.

"Are you not enjoying the books I sent?" a gentle, melodic voice echoed behind him.

Loki turned to see the shimmering, magical projection of Queen Frigga standing in his cell.

"What, do you expect me to spend the rest of my immortal life studying?" Loki scoffed, clearly agitated.

He had already completed Asgard's nine-hundred-year elite curriculum with perfect marks in every academic subject. His brainless oaf of a brother, on the other hand, had failed everything except combat practice.

Loki's own graduation was a farce. He only passed combat practice by knocking out the instructors and throwing a massive banquet to bribe them into handing over his diploma.

It was a tragic reflection of Asgard's brute-force culture. If that muscle-bound ape Thor couldn't even read a book properly, why should Loki be the one forced to remake his life?

"I have done everything in my power to make your confinement bearable, Loki," Frigga sighed, looking at him with deep sorrow. "You need to take this time to reflect on your actions."

"Other prisoners don't get fine furniture and a soft bed," she gently reminded him.

"Oh, is that right?" Loki sneered, his anger bubbling to the surface. "Does Odin lose sleep over my living conditions?"

He paced like a caged animal. "And what about Thor? Does he lay awake at night, agonizing over my fate?"

He had been locked in this glass box for what felt like an eternity. Why hadn't his idiot brother come to gloat, or yell, or even just visit?

'Damn it,' Loki thought bitterly. 'Why am I the only one dwelling on him, while he's completely forgotten I exist? It isn't fair!'

"You know perfectly well that your current circumstances are entirely your own doing," Frigga said softly, breaking his internal spiral.

"So, it's all my fault?" Loki spat, his handsome face twisting into a furious scowl.

"You were the ones who lied to me my entire life! You told me I was born to be a king, and after I finally worked for it, this is how I'm treated!"

Deep down, the God of Mischief's desires were painfully simple. He just wanted a true home, the approval of his parents, the throne, and to finally step out of Thor's shadow.

Every time Loki formulated a flawless plan for the betterment of Asgard, Thor would clumsily smash it to pieces. Then, Loki would be left holding the blame.

"Loki, a true king takes responsibility for his failures," Frigga countered, her brow furrowing. "You slaughtered innocent people on Earth."

"My body count is nothing compared to the oceans of blood Odin has spilled," Loki shot back with venom.

Unlike Thor, who couldn't tell the difference between a historical treaty and a tavern menu, Loki actually read the restricted archives. He knew the dark, bloody truths of the Nine Realms.

"Loki, stop," Frigga pleaded softly. "Regardless of everything, he is still your father."

"He is not my father!" Loki roared, spinning around with a wild, desperate fury in his eyes.

The cell fell dead silent.

"Then... am I not your mother?" Frigga asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Loki's chest tightened painfully at the profound sadness in her eyes. He took a shaky breath, his teeth instinctively biting down on his lower lip.

"You are not," he whispered.

The lie tasted like ash in his mouth. Unable to bear her gaze a second longer, Loki forcefully waved his hand, disrupting the magical energy and shattering Frigga's projection.

He was left completely alone, entirely consumed by his own bitter frustration. Knowing that Thor had brought his pathetic mortal girlfriend to Asgard to play house only twisted the knife deeper.

Suddenly, a massive shockwave of chaos erupted from the lower levels of the prison block.

A towering, masked warrior was tearing through Asgard's elite guards with terrifying brute force. He ripped the energy barriers apart with his bare hands, freeing the most dangerous inmates in the Nine Realms.

The alarms blared as the behemoth marched down the corridor, eventually stopping right in front of Loki's cell.

Loki stepped up to the glass, a wicked smirk playing on his lips. He sized the monster up, incredibly impressed by the raw, murderous aura bleeding off him.

Then, the powerful warrior simply turned his head and kept walking, completely ignoring the God of Mischief.

Loki's smirk vanished, replaced by sheer indignity. 'Are you kidding me?' he thought. 'Even the invading monsters are giving me the cold shoulder?'

But Loki couldn't let an opportunity for chaos slip by. Even if he couldn't escape, he could still stir the pot.

"If you're heading out," Loki called out casually, "you might want to take the stairwell on your left."

Taking the left path would lead the beast directly into the central hub of Asgard's defense grid. It was a petty, spiteful prank born of Loki's own isolation and anger.

His plan was simple: sit back on his comfortable bed, read a book, and let his meathead brother deal with the bloody fallout.

He had no way of knowing the horrific, permanent price his little prank was about to exact.

It would be a long time before the God of Mischief realized that true growth only begins when the regret becomes unbearable.

"The view of the cosmos from here is genuinely breathtaking," Ethan said, standing on the edge of the Bifrost.

Growing up in a heavily polluted modern city, Ethan was lucky to see three stars on a clear night. Standing beside Heimdall, it felt like he was floating directly in the center of the galaxy.

"Mortal, you should not be lingering here," Heimdall said, not taking his glowing golden eyes off the cosmos. "There is unrest in the dungeons."

"As a guest of the All-Father, returning to your quarters is the most prudent course of action until the matter is resolved," he added.

"A prison break?" Ethan raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "Everything was perfectly quiet when I left the palace."

"Why aren't you down there helping?" Ethan asked. "You've locked up some extremely dangerous criminals from the Nine Realms recently."

"It is unnecessary," Heimdall replied calmly. "Asgard is shielded by impenetrable spatial barriers."

"The Bifrost is the only door in or out. Anyone seeking to escape must eventually come through me."

"Right. But what happens if someone is trying to break in by force?" Ethan countered smoothly.

"If an external threat approaches, Hofund will warn me," Heimdall said confidently, gesturing to his sword.

Right on cue, the golden metal of the massive blade began to violently tremble, emitting a piercing, brilliant light.

The bridge fell deathly silent, the cosmic irony hanging thickly in the air.

"We have intruders," Heimdall barked, his demeanor instantly shifting to a warrior's stance.

His golden pupils flared, rapidly scanning the seemingly empty sky above them. Within seconds, he found his target.

"Damn it. They are cloaked in the upper atmosphere, and striking them from here will be difficult," Heimdall growled.

"Relax, I've got you covered," Ethan said, rolling his shoulders as he sensed the subtle shifts in the air currents above.

He raised a hand, his mind connecting with the physical forces surrounding the gatekeeper. "Your armor is incredibly dense, possessing a massive amount of physical weight."

"What are you talking about?" Heimdall asked, thoroughly confused.

Instead of answering, Ethan locked onto the physical mass of Heimdall's heavy armor and manipulated its fundamental vectors. He instantly inverted the downward vector of gravity acting on the Asgardian, nullifying his weight to zero.

In the same breath, Ethan applied a massive, continuous upward velocity vector directly to Heimdall's center of mass.

"Hold on tight. We're going up!" Ethan yelled.

"Wait, I am not prepa—!"

Heimdall's shout was cut off as he was violently launched into the sky. Propelled by Ethan's kinetic manipulation, the massive gatekeeper shot upward like a golden ballistic missile, accelerating instantly to supersonic speeds.

A thunderous boom shattered the sky as Heimdall's armored body collided dead-center with the cloaked, blade-shaped vessel.

The sheer kinetic force of the impact crumpled the ship's hull, resulting in a fiery explosion that instantly disabled its cloaking technology.

With the stealth field shattered, the true horror of the invasion was revealed to the naked eye.

A gargantuan, pitch-black mothership, stretching miles across the horizon, tore through the clouds like a sword plunging into Asgard's airspace.

Its central core burned with ominous red energy. From its docking bays, a massive, terrifying swarm of smaller blade-ships poured out, dive-bombing toward the golden city.

The inevitable had finally arrived. The gates of Asgard had been smashed open.

Malekith, carrying the festering hatred of ten thousand years, was finally driving his blade into the heart of the gods.
