Feng Zhi chuckled darkly at how flustered she was. Ling Mei's face turned red like a ripe tomato as she scolded herself inwardly — just how shameless could this man be?
Finally, he relented.
"Madam Gong will be here shortly with something for you to wear," he said before disappearing into the walk-in closet.
Ling Mei exhaled loudly, her hand resting on her chest. That overbearing man had finally left her alone.
Not long after, Madam Gong returned with a simple yet elegant evening dress. A few minutes later, Feng Zhi emerged from the closet, dressed casually in home clothes. Ling Mei found this side of him strangely different… softer, more approachable. Without his formal office suit, he looked even more handsome.
Together, they walked downstairs to the living room where Old Master Feng Xiang was seated.
A proud smile spread across his face when he saw them approaching. Completely ignoring Feng Zhi, he focused all his attention on Ling Mei.
"You truly are that old man's treasured granddaughter."
Ling Mei smiled shyly. She couldn't deny it — the Feng family was very good at teasing.
"Good evening, Old Master Feng," she greeted respectfully, bowing her head.
Feng Xiang frowned slightly. He did not like that.
"Come here, child. I've heard so much about you. Your grand father favors you greatly."
Ling Mei stepped away from Feng Zhi and sat beside the old master. Feng Zhi's jaw tightened. The audacity of his grandfather.
He sat opposite them, his gaze fixed on Ling Mei like a hawk.
"You look very healthy, Old Master Feng," Ling Mei said warmly. Somehow, she found him easier to talk to than Feng Zhi.
"Hmph. You should start calling me Grandfather," Feng Xiang insisted.
Ling Mei smiled again.
Feng Zhi's heart pricked with jealousy. She was smiling so freely at his grandfather, yet she hadn't even given him a proper look once.
He cleared his throat loudly.
Neither of them paid him any attention.
"If Feng Zhi dares to bully you, report him to me," Feng Xiang added.
Ling Mei glanced at Feng Zhi and caught his sullen expression. A flicker of satisfaction rose within her.
Feng Zhi shook his head, looking at the two of them as though they were the unreasonable ones.
Then Feng Xiang's tone grew serious.
"I spoke with your grandfather. He told me you objected to the marriage proposal… Is our Feng Zhi not good enough?"
Ling Mei lowered her gaze, embarrassed. How could she tell the great Old Master Feng that his grandson was not good enough?
Across the table, Feng Zhi's expression darkened. Was his grandfather truly lowering his dignity for this little fierce woman?
"The food is getting cold, Grandfather," Feng Zhi interrupted, his deep voice firm.
Ling Mei silently thanked him for the rescue.
"Yes, we should head to the dining table. It isn't good for you to eat cold food," she said gently, helping the old master with his cane.
They had barely settled at the dining table when a high-pitched voice rang out—
"Grandfather!"
Ling Mei winced slightly at the shrill tone.
She turned.
A young woman dressed elegantly walked in with graceful confidence, another refined lady following behind her. From their attire alone, Ling Mei could tell they were from a wealthy family.
"Grandfather," the girl repeated sweetly as she stood beside Old Master Feng.
"Bing Bing, come sit beside Grandpa," Feng Xiang said affectionately.
Ling Mei's brows furrowed slightly.
Bing Bing?
Her gaze shifted to Feng Zhi.
Did he have a younger sister she didn't know about?
The older woman took a seat opposite Feng Zhi, her eyes subtly sweeping over Ling Mei.
Ling Mei did not miss that look.
And neither did Feng Zhi.
