The victory against Pakistan had set the tone, but the match against Hong Kong was about dominance. It was a chance for the batters to flex their muscles. Rohit Sharma lost the toss (standard procedure), and India was put in to bat.
After a steady start from Rohit (21) and KL Rahul (36), the stage was set for the middle order. Virat Kohli played the innings with a sublime 59*, but the fireworks came from the other end. Aarav Pathak walked in at Number 4. The Hong Kong bowlers, brave as they were, had no answer to the Seth.
Aarav didn't just hit boundaries; he toyed with the field.
Over 17: Three sixes off Ehsan Khan.
Over 19: Four boundaries in a row off Aizaz Khan. He reached his 50 off just 22 balls. He finished with 59 off 23 balls* (4 Fours, 5 Sixes). India posted 192/2.
In the second innings, Hong Kong fought bravely, but Aarav decided to have a net session with the ball. He bowled 3 overs. Figures: 3-0-15-3. He cleaned up the middle order with sheer pace. India won by 40 runs. Qualifying for Super 4s: Top of the Table.
Super 4, Match 2: India vs. Pakistan (The Rematch)
Date: 4th September 2022 Venue: Dubai International Cricket Stadium Toss: Pakistan won the toss and elected to Bowl.
The group stage win was sweet, but the Super 4 clash was the main course. Sunday Night. Dubai. Sold out. Pakistan had regrouped after the first loss. They were hungry. India was confident.
First Innings: The Indian Assault
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul came out with a clear plan: Attack everything. They smashed 54 runs in the first 5 overs. Rohit fell for 28 (16). Rahul for 28 (20). The platform was set: 62/2 (6 Overs).
Virat Kohli and Aarav Pathak joined forces. This wasn't the slow rebuild of the first match. This was high-octane batting.
Over 10: Mohammad Nawaz to Aarav Pathak Aarav was batting on 12 off 6. Ball 1: Aarav stepped out. Inside-out over extra cover. SIX. Ball 2: Slog sweep. SIX. Ball 3: Cut shot. FOUR. Aarav moved to 28 off 9.
Commentary (Ravi Shastri): "He is continuing from where he left off against Hong Kong! This is not just hitting; this is calculated assault. Nawaz doesn't know where to bowl!"
Virat Kohli, at the other end, was playing his trademark game—running hard, piercing gaps. He reached his 50 off 36 balls with a six over deep mid-wicket off Hasnain.
Aarav looked set for a big one, but in the quest for 220, he perished. He tried to ramp Haris Rauf over third man. The pace (151 kmph) defeated him. Caught at short third man. Aarav Pathak c Naseem b Rauf 40 (21)Strike Rate: 190.47
Virat Kohli finished with 60 (44). Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant added late runs, but a few wickets fell in a cluster.Bhuvi hit two boundaries at the end. (Actually, let's stick to the prompt's score).
Total Score: India 201/7 (20 Overs). A huge total in a pressure game.
Target: 202 Runs. Pakistan Openers: Babar Azam & Mohammad Rizwan.
Bhuvi and Arshdeep started. Over 4:Ravi Bishnoi came into the attack. First ball: Babar Azam chipped it to mid-wicket. OUT. Babar failed again. India on top.
Rizwan and Nawaz are there but Pakistan had a plan. They promoted Mohammad Nawaz (the lefty) to number 4 to counter the Indian leg-spinners (Chahal and Bishnoi). It worked. Nawaz and Rizwan launched a counter-attack that stunned India. Nawaz scored 42 off 20 balls. Rizwan scored 71 off 51 balls.
By the 15th over, Pakistan was 135/2.
Rohit brought Aarav back in the 16th over. Over 16: Aarav Pathak to Mohammad Nawaz Ball 1: 152 kmph Yorker. Nawaz tried to dig it out. Missed. Bowled.Aarav gets the breakthrough!
Commentary (Wasim Akram): "He does it again! Whenever India needs a wicket, the Vice-Captain delivers! Pace is the difference! Nawaz gone, game on!"
With Nawaz gone, the equation was 66 off 24. Hardik Pandya removed Rizwan in the 17th. Bhuvi bowled the 19th over. He went for 19 runs (Asif Ali hit him) and over 20 was a tight pack over!
Result: Pakistan finished on 190/8. Result: India won by 11 Runs.
Commentary (Ravi Shastri): "INDIA WINS! A thriller in Dubai! They defended 201! Aarav Pathak's 40 runs and that crucial wicket of Nawaz turned the game! Arshdeep held his nerve in the start! "
Match 3: The Sri Lankan Trap (Super 4)
Date: 6th September 2022 Venue: Dubai
Just 48 hours after the emotional high of beating Pakistan, India faced Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma lost the toss (again). Sri Lanka elected to Bowl.
First Innings: India lost KL Rahul and Virat Kohli early. Rohit Sharma played a captain's knock (72 off 41). Aarav Pathak (15) and Suryakumar Yadav (34) couldn't convert starts. India posted 173/8. It felt 15-20 runs short on a good batting track.
Sri Lanka's openers, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, came out firing. They put on 97 for the first wicket in 11 overs. The Indian bowlers looked toothless. Bhuvi swung it but didn't get wickets. Arshdeep was taken for runs. Even Aarav, usually the partnership breaker, went for 28 in his 4 overs without a wicket.
Yuzvendra Chahal picked up 3 quick wickets in the middle (Nissanka, Asalanka, Gunathilaka). Sri Lanka slumped from 97/0 to 110/4. India sniffed a comeback.
But the captain Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa played brilliantly. They targeted the short boundaries. They ran hard. Equation: 7 runs off 6 balls. Arshdeep Singh to bowl the last over as Rohit Sharma used Aarav in the middle to get wickets or even control the economy rate. He bowled 4 brilliant yorkers. But an overthrow and a missed run-out cost India. On the second last ball, Shanaka hit a boundary.
Result: Sri Lanka won by 6 wickets (with 1 ball to spare).
The stadium was stunned. India, the favorites, had lost. Rohit Sharma looked devastated in the post-match presentation. "We were 15 runs short with the bat," Rohit admitted. "And with the ball, we weren't disciplined enough in the Powerplay. Sri Lanka outplayed us."
India vs Afghanistan. India HAD to beat Afghanistan. And they had to beat them BIG to improve NRR as Pakistan victory over Hong Kong was of big Margin.
Rahul Dravid stood before the team. "We slipped up against Sri Lanka. We got complacent. But we are still alive. We can beat Afghanistan. But we need a statement win. We need to boost the NRR."
Aarav Pathak sat in the corner, staring at his bowling boots. He was angry about his performance against Sri Lanka. 0 wickets. "Afghanistan," Aarav whispered to Arshdeep. "We destroy them. No mercy."
The stage was set. India needed a massive win to keep the Asia Cup dream alive.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Dubai heat was unrelenting, but the atmosphere inside the stadium was noticeably different. After the loss to Sri Lanka, the Indian fans were anxious. The equation was complicated; India needed a massive win to keep any mathematical hope alive (dependent on Pakistan losing to Sri Lanka later), but more importantly, they needed to restore pride.
Harsha Bhogle stood in the center with the microphone. Beside him was the Afghanistan captain, Mohammad Nabi. The crowd waited for Rohit Sharma.
But the man walking out from the Indian dugout wasn't the Hitman. It was Aarav Pathak.
A murmur rippled through the stadium, quickly turning into a roar of surprise and excitement. The 21-year-old "Seth Saheb" was wearing the blazer.
Aarav spun the coin. Nabi called "Heads." It was Tails.
Aarav: "We will bat first, Harsha. We want to put runs on the board and test our bowlers under lights with a target. We haven't defended well in this tournament, so we want to fix that."
Harsha Bhogle: "Well, this is a surprise! Aarav Pathak walks out for the toss. Aarav, first time leading in a multi-nation tournament. Where is Rohit?"
Aarav Pathak: "Rohit just wants to take a break considering the tough conditions here, and the World Cup ahead. Playing back-to-back is not easy in these heat conditions. We're trying to finalize the roles that each individual will play in the World Cup, so we wanted to try a few different combinations today."
Harsha Bhogle: "Big shoes to fill, but you've done it before in the Caribbean. What are the changes?"
Aarav: "Yeah, three changes. Hardik, Chahal, and Rohit miss out. Deepak Chahar, Axar Patel, and Dinesh Karthik come in. Rishabh Pant is also playing. So we are batting heavy today."
Harsha Bhogle: "And the batting order? Who opens?"
Aarav: "You'll see (smiles). But yes, Virat bhai will open with KL Rahul."
Playing XI (India):
KL Rahul
Virat Kohli
Aarav Pathak (C)
Suryakumar Yadav
Rishabh Pant (WK)
Dinesh Karthik
Axar Patel
Deepak Chahar
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Arshdeep Singh
Ravichandran Ashwin
Openers: KL Rahul & Virat Kohli. Bowler: Fazalhaq Farooqi.
The experiment began. Virat Kohli, opening in T20Is after a long time. The drought of his 71st century had lasted 1,020 days. The world was waiting.
Intent KL Rahul started aggressively, flicking Farooqi for six and driving Mujeeb Ur Rahman through covers. Virat Kohli looked different today. There was no tentative prod.
Over 3: Kohli stepped out to Mujeeb and lofted him over mid-off.
Over 5: He pulled Farooqi with disdain.
Score after 6 Overs: India 52/0.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Dubai night was humid, the air heavy with the lingering disappointment of India's exit from the final race. Yet, the stadium was packed. Why? Because when India plays, the world watches. And tonight, there was a different energy in the air.
KL Rahul and Virat Kohli had walked out with a vengeance. The shackles of the previous matches were broken.
Powerplay: 52/0. A solid, aggressive start.
KL Rahul reached a fluent 62 off 41 balls, a knock filled with wristy flicks and powerful drives. But in the 13th over (12.4), trying to launch Fareed Ahmad over long-on, he mistimed it. The ball soared high and was taken safely on the boundary. India: 119/1.
The crowd roared as Aarav Pathak, the Captain for the day, walked out at Number 3. He looked at the scoreboard. 119/1. 7.2 overs left. He looked at the non-striker. Virat Kohli. Kohli was batting on 59. He looked different today. There was no fidgeting. No nervous energy. Just a cold, steely focus.
Aarav punched gloves with Kohli. "Ball is coming on nicely, Bhaiya," Aarav said. "Let's make it big." Kohli nodded, eyes burning. "I'm seeing it like a football, Seth. Let's run them ragged."
For the next five overs, it was a symphony of destruction. Aarav didn't take time to settle. He knew Kohli was in the zone, so he played the perfect foil, rotating strike and punishing the bad balls.
Over 15 (Rashid Khan): Kohli stepped out and whipped a googly through mid-wicket for FOUR. Aarav followed it up with a reverse sweep for FOUR.
Over 16 (Mujeeb): Aarav danced down the track and lofted him over extra cover for SIX.
But the story was Kohli. He was manipulating the field. He played shots that defied physics wristy flicks against 140kmph pace, late cuts against spin. He moved into the 90s.
Over 19: The Moment History Stood Still
Bowler: Fareed Ahmad. Virat Kohli on Strike: 94*. Aarav Pathak Non-Striker: 28*.
The stadium went silent. 1,020 days. That was how long it had been since Virat Kohli last raised his bat for a century in international cricket. The weight of a billion expectations hung in the humid Dubai air.
Ball 1: Fareed ran in. He bowled a slower bouncer. Kohli waited. He rolled his wrists and pulled it to deep square leg. DOT BALL.
Ball 2 (18.2 Overs): The Shot Fareed Ahmad ran in. He banged it in short—a ball that sat up on the pitch. It was the perfect length for the pull. Virat Kohli swiveled. The bat speed was lightning. He didn't try to keep it down. He hit it with authority. The ball flew flat. It dissected the gap between deep square leg and deep mid-wicket. It sailed over the rope. SIX!
Ravi Shastri (Voice trembling with emotion): "AND THERE IT IS! THE DROUGHT HAS ENDED! NUMBER 71! Who would have thought it would come in this format? But who cares?! The King is back on his throne! Short of a length, lovely pull shot. Flat and over deep midwicket! Look at that smile! Look at the relief!"
Kohli dropped his bat. He took off his helmet. A massive, genuine smile broke across his face—a smile that washed away three years of criticism, doubt, and struggle. He looked up at the skies. He kissed the ring on a chain around his neck (his wedding ring).
Aarav Pathak ran from the non-striker's end. He didn't just high-five. He engulfed Kohli in a massive bear hug. "You are the greatest!" Aarav screamed into Kohli's ear. Kohli hugged him back, laughing, tears glistening in his eyes.
Then, Kohli broke the hug. He looked at the crowd. He looked at Aarav. And then, he did it. He placed one hand on his stomach, the other holding the bat, and bowed. A deep, gentlemanly bow to the crowd. The Aarav Pathak Celebration.
Aarav's jaw dropped. He laughed, clapping furiously. The King was paying homage to the Prince's style. The crowd went absolutely berserk.
Gautam Gambhir: "That is a special moment. Acknowledging the support, acknowledging the team. Virat Kohli has conquered his demons tonight."
The God Mode (Over 19 & 20)
The century was done. Now, Kohli was free. The "God Mode" was activated.
Over 19 continued:Ball 3 (18.4): Fareed tried a yorker. Missed. Full toss. Kohli stood still and smashed it over long-off. SIX.
Ball 4 (18.4): Fareed went wide. Kohli reached out and carved it over point. It flew into the stands. SIX.
Ball 5 (18.6): Fareed, terrified, bowled a slower ball. Kohli picked it. He stepped out and deposited it over deep extra cover. SIX.Three consecutive sixes!
Over 20: Fazalhaq Farooqi Aarav Pathak hit a boundary on the first ball, then gave the strike to Kohli. Kohli finished the innings with two glorious fours—one through covers, one flicked past short fine leg.
Innings BreakIndia: 238/1 (20 Overs)
Virat Kohli: 122* (61 balls) – 12 Fours, 6 Sixes
KL Rahul: 62 (41)
Aarav Pathak: 38* (18)
The Indian dugout gave a standing ovation as Kohli walked off, arm-in-arm with Aarav.
Target: 239 Runs.
If the batting was a masterclass, the bowling was a massacre. The ball was swinging under lights, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was in the mood to destroy.
Over 1: Bhuvi to Zazai Swing. Miss. Swing. Miss. LBW. WICKET.
Over 3: Bhuvi to Gurbaz Inswinger. Through the gate. BOWLED.
Over 4: Arshdeep joins the party Arshdeep bowled Karim Janat with a yorker.
The Bhuvi Fifer In his final over of the spell (the 7th of the innings), Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Najibullah Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai. Figures: 4-0-4-5. Five wickets for four runs. In four overs. It was one of the greatest T20 bowling spells ever witnessed.
Deepak Chahar came in the middle overs and picked up 2 wickets with his knuckleballs. Arshdeep Singh returned at the death to clean up the tail, taking 2 more wickets to finish with 3.
Afghanistan 111 All Out. India Won by 127 Runs.
Ravi Shastri: "What a night! Virat Kohli, Man of the Match. Virat, 71st. Finally."
Virat Kohli: "I feel blessed. I wasn't desperate, I was just grateful to be playing. The break helped. And batting with Aarav... his energy kept me going. He told me to keep hitting."
Ravi Shastri: "And the bow? The celebration?"
Virat (Grinning): "I stole it from the Captain. He does it all the time. I thought I'd pay tribute to the Aarav as he is leading the team first time in a multination tournament. He's leading us well."
Aarav stood in the background, beaming. The Asia Cup campaign had ended with a win, but more importantly, the King was back. And the Prince was right beside him.
Next Mission: T20 World Cup, Australia.
