It was the look in his eyes as he looked at her. His body steadily moved toward her, closing the distance as she backed away.
A flash of irritation at her actions showed that he intended to do more than touch her.
"You sever our bond… you tell me you love me… promising to help me, and you won't let me touch you?" he asked, his voice soft with a hint of hoarseness that only made Violet more wary.
Coming to a stop just before her back reached the door, she stretched out her hand to touch Cain's chest before he could come any closer, putting about a foot of distance between them.
"I'm going back to Lady June," Violet began explaining, refusing to call her "mother," aware that the woman only saw her as a tool and nothing more.
It had taken a while to be sure, but once convinced, it was hard to go back. "We can't—we can't do that—"
