Bai Meiyue felt a chill climb her spine. She tried to pull the knife from the man's grip, but she realised that the man's grip was too strong. She could not even budge, much less take the knife out of his grasp. "You—take your hood off!" She did not know why, but something about the man made her feel off; it was as if she had to know who was behind the hood.
"Some things never change," the man chuckled. "Even after coming back, you are still the same, Meiyue."
"What—"
The barter room morphed and started to get distorted; Bai Meiyue's eyes widened as she watched the man disappear. "Wait!"
However, the barter system was not built to take orders from her; as soon as the room started to move, a second later she returned to her room. Her son was lying in his cot, sleeping peacefully, and the entire room was filled with eerie quietness. And yet she could still hear the laugh of the man as if he was standing right next to her.
