Chapter 11 - Chapter 11- Training

By 7AM on Monday morning, 19th October, Azim was already awake. The Merseyside morning was dark, crisp, and heavy with autumn fog that hung over the Mersey like a damp blanket.

Before he even arrived at the gates of the training complex, his phone chimed. It was a notification from the Liverpool First Team WhatsApp group.

The message is from the team captain Jordan Henderson.

Even though Henderson was currently sidelined with a severe, agonizing heel injury that required aggressive physiotherapy and injections, his presence over the squad remained absolute. Attached to the message was a fifteen-second video. It showed Henderson inside an empty gym, his foot strapped tightly, grinding through brutal heavy-resistance sled pushes while sweat dripped off his chin onto the rubberized floor.

"Morning lads," Henderson's text read below the video. "I see some of you taking it easy on the rest day. Remember what the boss said on Saturday. Spurs was just the foundation. If we drop our standards by one percent today at Melwood, we give away everything we fought for at White Hart Lane. Do not let up. See you all in treatment and tactical."

Azim stared at the screen, feeling a surge of profound professional respect. Henderson was not playing, yet he worked harder in the shadows than most players did under the floodlights. That was the raw, unpolished heart of Liverpool Football Club. It was a reminder that talent without absolute, obsessive work ethic meant nothing in this environment. Azim typed a quick, respectful thumbs-up in response before closing the group chat.

Inside Melwood, the atmosphere was already buzzing with high-level professional focus. The smell of freshly brewed espresso, damp lawn turf, and rub-down liniment filled the corridors. Staff members moved quickly with tactical clipboards and heart-rate telemetry gear.

As Azim walked into the player lounge near the medical rooms, he bumped directly into Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian forward, who had missed the Tottenham fixture due to a nagging muscular issue, was dressed in full training gear, his iconic, brilliant white smile instantly brightening the dimly lit hallway.

"Azim! My brother!" Firmino called out, stepping forward and pulling Azim into a warm, enthusiastic brotherhood hug.

"Good to see you back, Bobby," Azim replied, grinning back. "How is the muscle feeling?"

"100%!" Firmino said, tapping his thigh with a hand. "I watched the match on television at home. Man, when you hit that shot against Lloris, I stood up on my sofa and screamed! Unbelievable power! But now I am back, so you do not have to carry the attack alone up front. We make magic together against the Russians on Thursday."

"Looking forward to it," Azim said, feeling an immediate, easy chemistry with the Brazilian. Firmino's fluid movement, intelligent pressing angles, and unselfish link-up play made him an absolute dream partner for any central striker.

By 8.30AM, the entire squad gathered in the main indoor conditioning facility for the pre-pitch preparation phase. The floor was covered in heavy rubber matting, surrounded by state-of-the-art squat racks, pilates reformers, dynamic stretching bands, and sports-science tracking consoles.

The club's fitness coaches took immediate control, leading the squad through an exhaustive, 45 minute neuromuscular activation routine. The focus was entirely on core stability, hip mobility, dynamic adductor flexibility, and hamstring resilience to prepare their bodies for the violent directional changes required by Klopp's high-intensity pressing scheme.

Azim dropped into a series of deep, weighted lunges, holding a 20kg kettlebell close to his chest. Beside him, veteran midfielder James Milner was powering through a set of core rotations with mechanical precision, his face set in a mask of absolute concentration.

"Looking sharp, kid," Milner noted between reps, his Yorkshire accent gravelly and sharp. "Fame hasn't made your legs soft yet, I see."

"Never will, James," Azim replied, lowering his hips smoothly to complete another flawless repetition. "The work is the only thing that stays real."

"Good," Milner grunted, slamming his weight back onto the rack. "Because the honeymoon period ends today. The boss is going to run us into the dirt at three o'clock. If your lungs aren't ready, you'll be vomiting on the grass."

At 12.30PM, after a tactical meeting covering general defensive structures, the players were given a brief window to rest, hydrate, and step out onto the pitches before the main afternoon match-simulation session.

The sky over Melwood had cleared slightly, leaving a cold, crisp atmosphere and a pitch that had been watered until the grass glistened like glass. Azim laced up his blacked-out boots, pulled a mesh bag containing half a dozen Nike EPL footballs over his shoulder, and walked out toward the far end of Pitch 1, away from the main group of players who were sipping hydration drinks near the bench.

The whistle blast echoed across the damp turf of Pitch 1, signaling the start of the match simulation. The atmosphere instantly shifted from playful lightheartedness to pure, ruthless professional battle. Under Jürgen Klopp, training matches at Melwood were never casual walk-throughs. They were ferocious, high-intensity gladiatorial contests executed at 100% match speed, designed to condition the players' central nervous systems to survive the crushing physical demands of the Gegenpressing system.

Azim trotted up to the center circle, pulling the red bib over his chest. He took his position as the central striker for the primary unit. To his left was Philippe Coutinho, tucked slightly inside into the left half-space. To his right was Adam Lallana, while Roberto Firmino floated in a playmaker role just behind Azim. The opposition defensive unit, wearing yellow bibs, was formidable: Martin Škrtel and Dejan Lovren forming a bruising central defense pair, flanked by Nathaniel Clyne and Alberto Moreno, with Simon Mignolet guarding the net.

Klopp stood on the touchline, stopwatch in hand, his sharp eyes tracking every movement. "Go! High press! Lock the spaces!" he roared.

Mignolet restarted play with a short pass out to Škrtel. Instantly, the red unit triggered their trap.

Azim didn't just run blindly at the ball. He could feel the exact moment Škrtel decided to turn onto his right foot to hit a long diagonal pass.

Before the Slovakian defender could even sweep his leg back, Azim adjusted his run, shutting down the passing lane to Clyne while closing the distance at terrifying speed. His Agility and Speed allowed him to cover ten yards in the blink of an eye.

Škrtel panicked under the sudden, suffocating pressure, forced to clip a hurried pass toward the central midfield. Firmino read the desperate movement, stepping in front of Emre Can to steal the ball.

The transition was instant and devastating.

Firmino carried the ball forward, his body relaxed, his eyes scanning the box. Škrtel scrambled back into position, desperate to recover, while Lovren stepped up to close the gap.

Azim moved with lethal intelligence. He didn't run straight toward goal into the waiting arms of the center-backs. Instead, he made a sharp, curved run toward the right channel, dragging Lovren with him and opening up a wide canyon of space in the heart of the penalty box.

Azim felt Lovren's weight shift heavily onto his back foot. The Croatian defender was bracing for a physical battle, expecting Azim to try and muscle past him.

Azim used that expectation against him. He planted his left boot firmly into the wet grass, executed a sharp, fluid direction change, and sliced back inside toward the penalty spot. Lovren, caught flat-footed by the sheer suddenness of the movement, lost his footing slightly on the slippery turf, leaving Azim completely free.

Firmino didn't even look up. The Brazilian knew exactly where his striker would be. He executed a disguised, no-look reverse pass through the legs of Škrtel.

The ball rolled perfectly into Azim's path.

Mignolet rushed off his line, spreading his body wide to block the lower angles.

Time seemed to slow down. He didn't smash the ball with maximum power. Instead, with supreme technical delicacy, he opened his right ankle and chipped the leather softly over Mignolet's diving arms.

The ball floated gracefully over the keeper, dropping cleanly into the top corner of the net before rustling against the white nylon.

"Ja! Ja! Outstanding!" Klopp shouted, leaping into the air on the sideline and clapping wildly. "The movement, Azim! The timing of the counter-run was world-class! That is how we break a low block!"

Firmino jogged over, beaming with delight, and slapped Azim on the back. "Brilliant finish, brother! You read my pass before I even made it!"

"Your pass made it easy, Bobby," Azim replied, jogging back toward the center line.

The drill continued for forty-five intense minutes. The match simulation was relentless, filled with heavy tackles, rapid transitions, and constant physical battles. Škrtel, determined not to be outdone by 18-year-old twice in one day, played with aggressive, physical intensity, repeatedly trying to lean his heavy frame into Azim during aerial duels.

When Škrtel tried to shove him off a long goal-kick, Azim anchored his center of gravity, absorbed the impact effortlessly, and cushioned the ball on his chest before laying it off to Coutinho.

As the drill wore on, the physical toll of Klopp's session began to show on the senior players. Lallana was leaning on his knees, breathing heavily, while Moreno dragged his legs back into position.

When Klopp finally blew the long whistle to end the session, the players slumped onto the grass, gulping down water from plastic bottles handed out by the sports science staff.

Azim stood calmly, taking a long drink of water, barely sweating.

Klopp walked onto the pitch, hands deep in his tracksuit pockets, and signaled for Azim to join him near the center circle while the rest of the squad began their cool-down stretches.

"Azim, walk with me," Klopp said, his voice dropping into a warm, paternal tone as they stepped toward the edge of the pitch.

"Yes, boss?" Azim asked, wiping his brow with a towel.

Klopp looked at him, his small, sharp eyes full of genuine admiration behind his glasses. "I spent an hour this morning with Mona Nemmer and our sports science team looking over the telemetry data from the Spurs match and this morning's gym sessions. Do you know what the reports show?"

Azim shook his head smoothly. "No, boss."

"Your progression curves are completely off the charts," Klopp said, shaking his head in quiet wonder. "Your muscle recovery rates, your anaerobic capacity, your acceleration efficiency, they are the highest in the entire squad. You are improving faster than any young player I have ever coached, including guys like Mario Götze or Robert Lewandowski at Dortmund."

Azim remained grounded, listening intently. "I am just giving everything to the training, boss."

"I know you are," Klopp said, slapping him firmly on the shoulder. "And that is why I am telling you this now. On Thursday night, we host Rubin Kazan at Anfield in the Europa League. It is my first European match at home as Liverpool manager. The atmosphere is going to be electric, but the match itself will be difficult. Russian teams do not play like Premier League teams. They will not leave open spaces for us to counter-attack. They will sit deep in a compact five-four-one low block, hit us on the break, and try to frustrate us."

Klopp stopped walking, turning to look Azim dead in the eye. "European football demands tactical patience and absolute clinical edge in front of goal. You might only get one half-chance in ninety minutes. I need you mentally ready to take that chance."

"I am ready, boss," Azim said, his voice firm and unwavering. "Give me the opportunity, and I will score."

Klopp let out a booming laugh, delighted by the young striker's unshakeable confidence. "That is what I want to hear! Go get cleaned up, get some food in you, and prepare for the tactical video session."

An hour later, the squad gathered in the Melwood canteen for lunch. The room was filled with the savory aromas of grilled chicken, brown rice, fresh salmon, and steamed vegetables, meticulously prepared by the club's nutrition team.

Azim sat at a long wooden table alongside James Milner, Philippe Coutinho, and Roberto Firmino. The senior players treated Azim with a new level of warmth and respect, fully accepting him as a core part of the first team rather than just another academy kid filling in for injuries.

"So, kid," Milner said, cutting into a piece of chicken. "You ready for European night at Anfield? It's different from the league, you know. The referees whistle for every little contact. You can't go barging into Russian center-backs like you did against Alderweireld, or you'll be booked in ten minutes."

"I can adapt, James," Azim replied with a grin, picking up his fork. "If they want to play soft, I'll use movement. If they want to play physical, I'll hold them off."

At 2:30 PM, the squad migrated into the video analysis room. The room was dark, equipped with comfortable tiered seating and a massive high-definition screen at the front. Assistant manager Peter Krawietz stood by the laptop, ready to run the tactical presentation on Rubin Kazan.

The lights went down, and the screen illuminated with footage of Rubin Kazan's recent matches in the Russian Premier League and Europa League.

"Pay attention, lads," Krawietz said, using a laser pointer to highlight the Russian team's defensive shape. "Rubin Kazan play a very disciplined, narrow low block. Their two central defenders are physical monsters, over six-foot-two, very strong in aerial duels. They rely heavily on second balls and organized set-pieces."

Krawietz paused the video, highlighting a gap between the Russian left-back and central defender during a transition phase.

"Notice here," Buvač continued. "When their wing-backs push forward to support the counter, their central defenders slow down to cover the space. They leave a subtle pocket of space right on the edge of the eighteen-yard box. That is where we can hurt them. Quick, sharp passing combinations between our central striker and our floating midfielders."

Azim sat near the back row, his eyes glued to the screen. He carefully mapped the movement patterns of Rubin Kazan's defensive leader, identifying the precise triggers when the defender committed to a tackle too early. In his mind, Azim was already simulating various match scenarios, running scenarios of how to exploit those subtle defensive flaws.

By 4:00 PM, the official duties at Melwood concluded for the day.

Azim drove back through the quiet streets of Liverpool, the autumn sky darkening into a deep shade of twilight. Upon arriving at his apartment, he took a long, hot shower, letting the warm water wash away the residual tension of the day.

Clad in comfortable grey sweatpants and a black hoodie, he sat down on his living room sofa and poured himself a glass of fresh water. The apartment was peaceful, offering a calm contrast to the intense energy of Melwood.
