Chapter 15 - Chapter 15- Red Card

Rubin Kazan's manager had seen enough to recognise the problem.

Valeri Chaly stood near the edge of his technical area, gesturing toward the midfield and speaking urgently to his players. He wanted them to remain calm, but the two goals had exposed how easily Liverpool could punish a loose pass.

The Russians were no longer as adventurous in possession.

Their midfielders began dropping closer to the centre-backs, while their wide players moved deeper to help the fullbacks. The attacking midfielder had less freedom to remain ahead of the ball, because Rubin needed additional support to escape Liverpool's pressure.

It made their build-up safer in theory.

In practice, it also left Dević more isolated.

Azim saw the change.

You've given yourselves more passing options, but you've taken them away from the attack.

The adjustment created a new tactical problem for Rubin. If they played short, Liverpool could continue to press them near their own penalty area. If they played long, Dević would have to compete against two centre-backs without much support around him.

Either choice favoured Liverpool.

But only if the home side continued to work together.

Azim moved toward Kvirkvelia as the defender received possession.

The centre-back glanced up and immediately passed toward Nabiullin.

Coutinho began moving inside.

Azim adjusted his run to discourage the return ball.

The fullback tried to play through midfield.

Can stepped forward and intercepted.

Liverpool had possession once more.

Azim immediately moved into a central position, offering himself between the lines.

Can played forward.

Azim received the ball under pressure, but he did not try to turn immediately. He shielded it from Georgiev, waited until Firmino moved into a better position, then laid the ball into the Brazilian's path.

Firmino turned and released Lallana down the right.

Lallana carried the ball toward the penalty area before cutting inside and attempting a low shot.

Ryzhikov dropped quickly and saved.

The rebound rolled toward Coutinho, who tried to strike through the crowd, but Kvirkvelia got a leg in the way.

The ball went behind for a corner.

Liverpool's supporters applauded the attack.

Azim jogged toward the penalty area, breathing harder now. He was still moving constantly, but the accumulated effort had begun to settle into his legs. More concerning was the pressure behind his eyes whenever he reached for the deeper awareness that helped him read movements around him.

He needed to be careful.

Observation was useful because it allowed him to gather information. It was not a substitute for positioning or decision-making, and the more he tried to track everything at once, the more difficult it became to separate important details from unnecessary ones.

He could sense the players close to him.

He could read the direction of a run before the pass reached its target.

But he could not afford to extend his attention carelessly while also manipulating the ball.

Both abilities demanded focus.

And focus was becoming expensive.

Azim took a slow breath as Coutinho walked toward the corner flag.

One action at a time.

The Brazilian delivered the corner toward the near post.

Azim tried to get across his marker, but Rubin's defender anticipated the movement and reached the ball first. The clearance flew toward midfield, where Milner collected the second ball and immediately returned it toward the attacking line.

Liverpool kept the pressure on.

The next attack produced no clear chance, but Rubin had been forced to defend for another minute.

That was enough to keep the pressure building.

The first genuine warning for Liverpool came after Rubin escaped the press.

Azim had moved toward Kambolov, closing the direct route into Georgiev. The defender held the ball a fraction longer than expected, then played a firm pass into the central midfielder's feet.

Firmino tried to close from the side.

The pass was good enough to beat him.

Georgiev controlled it, turned away from Milner and carried forward.

Liverpool's midfield was briefly stretched.

Can stepped across to slow the advance, but Georgiev released the ball before the challenge arrived, sending it toward Karadeniz on Rubin's left.

The winger received near the touchline and pushed the ball into space.

Clyne and Skrtel shifted across, trying to contain the attack without opening the central channel.

Karadeniz looked up and delivered a low cross toward the edge of the penalty area.

Devic moved between the defenders.

Sakho tracked him.

The ball skipped across the grass, and Georgiev arrived behind the play, collecting it outside the right side of the box.

The midfielder had a shooting opportunity.

Mignolet adjusted his position, staying close enough to cover the near side while keeping his weight balanced for a shot across goal.

Georgiev struck.

The ball travelled hard toward the lower corner, angling away from the goalkeeper.

Mignolet reacted and pushed himself across the goalmouth.

His hand reached the ball, turning it away from the target.

The save sent the shot behind for a corner.

Anfield answered with a roar.

Mignolet rose to his feet and pointed toward the defence.

"Stay with them! Don't switch off!"

Azim had been recovering when the move developed. He turned toward the corner flag, ready to press the first pass if Rubin attempted to retain possession after the restart.

The danger had come because the initial press had been beaten.

There was no point pretending otherwise.

Kambolov had delayed the decision long enough to release Georgiev into the central space. Once the midfielder turned, Liverpool's double pivot had to react, and the ball moved wide before the defence could fully recover.

Rubin had done something right.

They had drawn Azim forward, escaped through the next line and attacked the space behind him.

Azim filed the sequence away.

Don't overcommit on Kambolov. If he delays, Firmino must be ready to close the receiver.

The corner arrived.

Skrtel rose above Dević and cleared the delivery toward the edge of the area. Can collected the second ball, turning away from pressure and sending a pass toward Lallana.

Liverpool escaped.

Azim ran forward again.

Klopp had seen the warning too. His gestures toward Milner and Can were sharp, reminding them to protect the middle when the press failed.

He did not want his team abandoning its attacking identity.

He wanted them to understand the consequences of it.

The home side could afford to press aggressively because the players behind the ball were prepared to cover. Without that structure, the same aggression would leave gaps for Rubin to exploit.

Azim moved into position near the centre-backs.

He was tired, but he was still thinking.

And Rubin were still trying to find a way through him.

The next few minutes passed with Liverpool continuing to probe.

Coutinho drifted inside from the left, drawing a defender away from the touchline. Moreno advanced into the space behind him, allowing Liverpool to maintain width without forcing the Brazilian winger to remain wide.

On the opposite side, Lallana moved between the touchline and the half-space, combining with Clyne whenever the opportunity arose.

Azim's movements helped connect those patterns.

He dropped toward Firmino when the central pocket became crowded, then moved away from the ball to drag a centre-back toward the edge of the area. Sometimes he received the pass and laid it off immediately. At other times, he deliberately ignored the ball, trusting a teammate to exploit the space he had created.

Not every combination worked.

A pass from Can arrived behind Firmino, forcing the Brazilian to turn back toward his own half. Rubin recovered before Liverpool could attack.

On another occasion, Azim dropped deep to receive, but both centre-backs stayed in position rather than following him. The pass arrived, and he found himself facing a wall of defenders without a clear forward option.

He returned the ball to Milner.

No opening.

No immediate reward.

He moved again.

Football was not a sequence of perfect plans.

The defenders could refuse to follow him. The midfielders could anticipate his movement. A teammate could misjudge the pass or take too long to release it.

Azim had to react to what actually happened, rather than insist that the game follow the picture he had imagined.

That was one of the most important differences between seeing possibilities and controlling a match.

He could influence the situation.

He could not dictate every decision made by eleven opponents.

Nor could he guarantee that his teammates would always make the right choice.

His job was to create conditions in which Liverpool had a better chance of succeeding.

At the twenty-eighth minute, Rubin tried to move the ball through their right side again.

Azim pressed Kvirkvelia and forced him toward the touchline. Firmino blocked the pass into Georgiev, while Lallana narrowed his position to prevent a simple switch into midfield.

The centre-back found Kuzmin instead.

The Russian captain took a touch and looked forward.

Lallana moved toward him.

Azim recovered across the central lane.

Kuzmin attempted to play inside, but Can stepped forward and intercepted. The ball deflected away from the midfielder, rolling toward the right side of the pitch.

Azim reacted first.

He collected it and turned toward goal.

For a moment, he had space to attack.

Firmino was available centrally, while Coutinho had moved into the left half-space. Lallana continued his run beyond Kuzmin, offering an option on the right.

Azim considered carrying the ball forward himself.

A defender was moving toward him, and the gap between the centre-backs was beginning to close.

He released the pass to Firmino.

The Brazilian tried to slip it into Coutinho's path, but Kambolov anticipated the combination and cleared the ball away.

The chance disappeared.

Azim turned immediately and pressed the next receiver.

The failed attack became the beginning of another defensive action.

Rubin's midfielder collected the clearance and attempted to play forward.

Azim blocked the route into Georgiev, forcing the ball toward the sideline.

Can moved across to challenge.

The midfielder panicked and played a hurried pass back toward Kuzmin.

Kuzmin controlled it, turned, and tried to advance down the line.

Moreno stepped forward.

The defender's next touch pushed the ball slightly too far ahead of him.

Azim saw it.

He accelerated from the inside, arriving at the same time as Kuzmin tried to recover the ball.

Their shoulders came together.

Azim kept his feet, placed his body between the defender and the ball, and poked it away with a controlled touch.

Kuzmin stumbled but remained upright.

The ball rolled toward Coutinho.

Liverpool had possession again.

"Good!" Klopp shouted from the touchline. "Good pressure!"

Azim did not look toward him.

He was already moving forward.

Coutinho carried the ball inside and passed to Firmino. Firmino turned and found Lallana near the corner of the box. Lallana cut inside, attracted two defenders, and laid the ball back toward Azim's path.

Azim arrived at the edge of the area.

He had space to shoot.

Instead, he noticed Coutinho moving unmarked toward the left side.

Azim let the ball run across his body and played a short pass to the Brazilian.

Coutinho struck first time.

The shot flew just beyond the far post.

Liverpool's supporters groaned again.

Coutinho put his hands on his hips, then looked toward Azim.

"That was close!"

"Next one goes in."

Coutinho gave him a quick grin.

"Keep passing like that, then."

Azim nodded and jogged back toward the halfway line.

He was enjoying this.

Not just the goals. Not just the roaring crowd.

He was enjoying the moment when the team began to understand his movements. Firmino was looking for him earlier. Lallana was running beyond the defensive line with greater confidence. Coutinho was moving into spaces he knew Azim would try to find.

They were no longer simply reacting to a young striker who could do unexpected things.

They were learning how to play with him.

That trust was beginning to change the way Liverpool attacked.

And Azim wanted to build on it.

Rubin's players were becoming restless again.

The home side had denied them sustained possession for long stretches, and their attempts to build attacks were repeatedly being redirected into less dangerous areas.

Chaly stood near the touchline, urging his players to remain composed.

"Шире! Держите мяч!" he called.

(Stay wider! Keep the ball!)

Kuzmin pointed toward the opposite flank, trying to encourage a switch of play.

The Russians needed to stretch Liverpool.

If they continued attempting to advance through the same narrow lanes, Azim and Firmino would keep closing the receivers. The fullbacks needed to offer wider positions, forcing Liverpool's wingers to make decisions about when to press and when to protect the space behind them.

Rubin began moving the ball more patiently.

For several seconds, it worked.

Kvirkvelia passed to Kambolov, who played out toward the left. Nabiullin returned the ball to Georgiev, and Georgiev attempted to switch it toward the opposite side.

Liverpool shifted together.

Azim travelled with the movement, remaining close enough to pressure the next receiver without abandoning the centre.

The ball reached Kuzmin.

He had space to take a touch and lift his head.

Lallana was moving toward him, but the Russian captain found a route down the right side. He carried the ball forward, attempting to draw Moreno out before releasing a pass to Kanunnikov.

The winger received it and pushed toward the corner of the penalty area.

Clyne moved across to meet him.

Can recovered toward the edge of the box.

Azim began moving back as well, preparing to close the passing lane if Kanunnikov tried to play the ball inside.

The Russian winger cut onto his right foot.

He had a narrow shooting angle.

Mignolet adjusted his position, expecting a cross or a low attempt toward the near post.

Kanunnikov chose to shoot.

The ball rose toward the goal.

Mignolet tracked it.

For a moment, the shot appeared to be heading beneath the crossbar, but its trajectory carried it over the frame and into the stands.

A goal kick.

The first commentator exhaled.

"Rubin have found a little space there, and Kanunnikov decides to go for goal. He was never quite able to get over the ball."

The second nodded.

"That's their first real opening from the flank. Liverpool have been excellent at forcing them inside, but the wider route is always going to be available if the fullback can get forward in time."

Azim listened only to the sound of the goal kick being prepared.

He had arrived late to the defensive action.

Not disastrously late, but late enough that the winger had time to settle the ball and choose his shot.

He looked toward Clyne.

The right-back glanced back at him, recognising the same problem.

"Next time, I'll get there sooner," Clyne called.

Azim shook his head.

"Don't rush out. I'll close the inside pass earlier."

Clyne nodded.

That was the adjustment they needed.

If Clyne charged too soon, Kanunnikov could take the ball past him. If he waited too long, the winger would have time to shoot. Azim needed to help by preventing the easy pass that would allow the Russian to turn toward the centre without pressure.

They returned to their positions.

The match resumed.

The second Rubin attempt came a few minutes later, and this time the shot forced Mignolet into action.

Liverpool had regained possession near the halfway line and tried to build another attack. Milner found Can, who passed forward toward Firmino.

The Brazilian controlled the ball and attempted to turn.

Georgiev stepped in and won possession with a well-timed challenge.

Azim immediately changed direction.

He closed from the front, forcing Georgiev to play sideways instead of carrying the ball forward.

That gave Rubin time to move the attack toward the left.

Karadeniz received near the touchline and passed inside to Eduardo, who had dropped away from Can's immediate pressure. Eduardo took one touch and turned toward the right side of Liverpool's defence.

For a moment, the counterattack had momentum.

Can chased back.

Milner moved toward the central lane.

Azim sprinted after Eduardo, trying to close the passing angle into Dević.

The Russian attacking midfielder saw the pressure and passed wide instead.

Kuzmin received the ball near the corner of the box.

Moreno was several metres away, still recovering from the previous phase. Kuzmin had a shooting opportunity if he could create enough separation.

He took a touch toward the inside.

Azim continued his recovery run, arriving just behind the midfielder.

Rather than attempting a desperate tackle from the side, he angled his approach to discourage the shot across goal and force Kuzmin to strike from the less comfortable side.

Kuzmin tried it anyway.

The ball travelled toward the far corner, skidding through the damp air.

Mignolet reacted sharply.

He pushed off his line and dived across, extending both hands to turn the shot away from goal.

The ball struck his gloves and bounced toward the edge of the six-yard box.

Sakho cleared it before Dević could reach the rebound.

Liverpool were safe.

Mignolet rose and shouted toward the defenders.

"Wake up! Stay together!"

Sakho raised a hand in acknowledgement.

Milner moved toward the goalkeeper, encouraging the back line to reset.

Azim stood outside the penalty area, breathing hard. He had helped close the inside route, but the shot had still come through. Rubin had used the first pass to bypass the initial press and moved the ball wide quickly enough to catch Liverpool before every player was back in position.

The goalkeeper had saved them.

That mattered.

Azim could make the correct decision and still fail to stop an attack. He could force an opponent into a less favourable shot, but he could not guarantee that the attempt would miss.

Football did not reward effort automatically.

It demanded that the team continue dealing with the consequences.

Azim turned toward the centre circle and started jogging forward.

"Good save!" he called to Mignolet.

The goalkeeper raised a hand.

"Now keep the ball!"

Azim smiled briefly.

"Working on it!"

Klopp was shouting from the touchline, reminding the players to maintain the defensive distances between the pressing line and midfield. His gestures were urgent, but he was not furious. He knew Rubin were capable of creating chances if Liverpool lost their structure.

The warning had arrived at the right time.

Two goals ahead was a good position.

It was not permission to become careless.

As the half approached its final quarter, the match began to feel more physical.

Kuzmin was still carrying his yellow card, and Moreno repeatedly tested the space around him. The Liverpool left-back advanced when the opportunity presented itself, forcing the Rubin captain to decide whether to follow him toward the touchline or remain inside to protect the centre.

On one occasion, Moreno pushed the ball beyond Kuzmin and tried to accelerate past him.

Kuzmin reacted quickly, getting across the fullback's path.

Moreno went down under the contact.

The referee blew his whistle.

Kuzmin threw both hands into the air.

"Я не трогал его!"

(I didn't touch him!)

The referee pointed toward the spot where the foul had occurred and warned the captain to move away.

Azim approached the area, watching the Russian's body language.

Kuzmin was frustrated.

He had already been booked, and his defensive responsibilities were becoming increasingly difficult as Liverpool kept shifting the ball toward his side.

Azim did not intend to provoke him. That would have been needless and risky.

Instead, he wanted to make him defend.

Every time Moreno received the ball, Azim tried to find a position that offered a passing lane into the left half-space. If Kuzmin stepped toward the fullback, Azim could drop into the opening behind him. If Kuzmin stayed close to Azim, Moreno could carry the ball forward.

The defender had to decide.

And because he was already on a yellow card, a mistimed challenge carried greater consequences.

Coutinho placed the ball down for the free kick.

Azim moved into the penalty area, taking up a position between the centre-backs. Kambolov stayed close to his shoulder, trying to prevent him from moving freely.

Coutinho delivered.

Azim attacked the near post, but Kambolov held his ground and forced him away from the ball's path. The delivery sailed beyond the central cluster and was cleared toward midfield.

Liverpool recovered possession.

The attack continued, but Rubin managed to reorganise before Liverpool could create another clear chance.

Azim returned to his position.

His attention began to drift in and out of the wider picture as he tried to track both the movement of Rubin's defenders and the passing lanes around the ball. The strain behind his eyes had become more persistent.

He had been using his awareness in short bursts throughout the half, reading receivers before the ball arrived and identifying opportunities to intercept. The earlier intervention on Ozdoev had been small, but the combination of sensing movement and subtly altering the ball's path required careful control.

He did not need to use it on every pass.

He needed to choose his moments.

Azim took a deeper breath and released the tension in his shoulders.

Stay sharp. Don't force it.

He could still read the game without reaching for everything at once.

His teammates were working hard beside him. Can was winning challenges and advancing with the ball. Milner was protecting the centre and communicating with the defenders. Firmino was pressing the passing lanes, while Lallana and Coutinho were making Rubin defend across the full width of the pitch.

Azim needed to remain connected to them.

He could not become so focused on his own abilities that he forgot the simple truth of Klopp's football.

The team had to move together.

The moment that changed the match arrived in the thirty-sixth minute.

Can had received the ball near the left side of midfield and attempted to carry it forward. Kuzmin moved across to challenge him, trying to prevent the Liverpool midfielder from turning toward goal.

Can shifted the ball away.

Kuzmin reacted late.

His leg caught Can as the midfielder attempted to continue his run, and both players stumbled from the contact.

The referee blew his whistle immediately.

Can sat on the grass for a moment, rubbing his shin before getting to his feet.

Kuzmin stood over him, protesting.

"Он сам упал!"

(He went down by himself!)

The referee reached into his pocket.

Azim stopped moving.

He knew what was coming.

Kuzmin had been booked earlier for the foul on Moreno. Now the referee was reaching for his second yellow card.

The Russian captain's expression changed as the first card appeared.

Then came the second.

The referee raised it high.

Red.

Kuzmin stared at him in disbelief.

For a moment, the stadium seemed to pause.

Then Anfield roared.

Rubin had lost their captain.

For the Russian side, the dismissal was a disaster.
