The clopping sound of hooves on the interlocked tiles introduced the approaching carriage. Guy rushed to his feet, hurrying off to it, a mighty smile on his face.
Madelyn rose slowly, clasping her idle hands.
Mr Brand alighted as soon as the carriage door opened. He clapped Guy on the shoulder, his face betraying the hint of a smile. But the instant he saw her, the smile died. Her heart gave a small, startled lurch.
The other man followed closely, laughing as though their arrival had interrupted some private jest.
"So this is the villa," he said brightly. "I must say, sir, you waste no time indulging in lavish spending and luxurious living."
"Why should I? My business exists to provide payment for my lifestyle."
"You remain as cocky, Captain."
Madelyn was astonished. They must accord their friendship to a great height. Captain Ramsay O'Neill words were unrefined, yet Mr Brand seemed to not care. Instead, he kept his eyes on her even while he spoke to the other man.
