🐦🔥 [ Phoenix ☯ POV ] 🐦🔥
The roster remained on the floating screens, its two immaculate columns unchanged. Contestants on one side. Celebrity partners on the other. Between them, a single gold line pulsed beneath the words: Live Partner-Reveal Broadcast: Tomorrow Morning.
Phoenix's name glowed among the contestants, while Choi Yongbok's remained among the celebrity partners. No line, bracket, or admitted hint connected them, but Solaris's silence made the lack of confirmation feel more ominous than reassurance.
'Baby?' Phoenix asked through the bond, keeping his expression politely curious for the cameras. 'That is only the roster.'
'I know,' Solaris replied too softly. 'That is why it is worse.'
The host's smile brightened as if she had not just thrown a decorative knife into the room and asked everyone to admire the shine. "Today's gathering remains part of our preliminary production schedule. Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock, the live partner-reveal broadcast and full filming schedule will begin. Until then, no contestant or celebrity partner will receive confirmed pairing information."
The announcement loosened some shoulders and tightened others. Relief, disappointment, curiosity, calculation—the banquet hall bloomed with expressions too quick for ordinary eyes and too tempting for cameras to ignore.
Phoenix kept his hands folded and studied the two columns like a polite contestant learning names, not a strategist mapping a battlefield. The chefs ranged from academy graduates and culinary heirs to independent owners, specialists, researchers, and several wild cards Solaris marked with immediate suspicion. Their celebrity counterparts included actors, singers, models, athletes, artists, variety stars, and public figures whose fame came with more handlers than visible personality. Phoenix did not let his attention settle on Choi Yongbok's name, though Solaris remained far too still.
'Partner assignments will be revealed tomorrow,' Phoenix reminded him. 'No spoilers today.'
'Fate is rude and does not respect production schedules,' Solaris muttered.
Before Phoenix could answer, attendants in dark jade uniforms entered from both sides of the hall carrying lacquered trays. On each tray rested sealed envelopes the color of moonlit ivory, each marked with a participant's name in raised gold script and closed with a phoenix-and-dragon wax seal.
The host waited until the envelopes had been placed before continuing. "Each participant has received a private production card. Do not open it in the hall. Its contents may include personal instructions, filming boundaries, challenge conditions, or opportunities that apply only to you. The card is confidential unless production states otherwise."
While the host explained the private production cards and the limits on advance pairing information, Phoenix kept his envelope unopened and studied the names only long enough to confirm that the season had already diverged from the original timeline.
As the formal instructions shifted into introductions, names and faces cycled across the screens in a smooth procession: Theo Blackwood with his calm green-haired presence; Andromeda Sunflare shining too brightly beside him; Caelum Veyr and Atlas Rion standing like polished blades in the same social cluster; Juniper Saye, quiet and precise behind round glasses; Liora Haneul, moon-silver and warmly composed; Ren Okja, older, steady, and unimpressed by glamour; Izan Zoryn with a comedian's restless eyes; Haru Min, nervous and sincere; Vesper Aurelian, pale and unreadable; and Sanae Choi, cheerful enough to make Phoenix immediately suspect she was dangerous.
It was too much information to absorb honestly and too valuable to ignore. Phoenix marked each name with care. Some people would become allies. Some would become rivals. Some would become distractions production fed to the audience with pretty lighting and ominous music.
When the host finally encouraged everyone to speak naturally and become familiar with one another before tomorrow's live partner-reveal broadcast and full filming schedule, Aaron Van Schrimsher IV turned toward Phoenix as if he had been waiting for permission to sparkle.
"Come, little Phoenix," Aaron said, rising with a flourish that made two nearby cameras adjust eagerly. "If production wants mingling, then we shall mingle properly. I will introduce you before the sharks decide whether to circle."
Phoenix looked at the offered hand, then at Aaron's bright, clever smile. Aaron had approached him first. If Aaron guided him through the celebrity side of the room, Phoenix would look welcomed rather than ambitious, included rather than grasping.
It was a gift. A strategic one, wrapped in glitter and dramatic timing.
Phoenix accepted lightly. "Thank you, Aaron-ssi."
Aaron's delight was immediate. "Oh, I do like that. Come along. We will begin with the artists, avoid the predators, and pretend those are not sometimes the same people."
He introduced Phoenix first to Juniper Saye, whose calm gaze went straight to Phoenix's hands. "Kitchen hands," she said, as if that was praise enough. Phoenix smiled because it was. Then Aaron swept him toward Liora Haneul and Ren Okja, where Liora praised his interview line about food carrying memory and Ren tested him with a blunt comment about broth. Phoenix answered with humility instead of flattery, and the older chef's small nod felt more valuable than applause.
Cassian Vale offered charm that never quite reached his eyes. Mei Sun-Hee smiled sweetly enough to make Phoenix distrust every grain of sugar in the room. Izan Zoryn bowed like he was introducing himself to royalty and immediately made nervous Haru Min laugh, which raised Phoenix's opinion of him. Vesper Aurelian watched too quietly, while Sanae Choi declared neutrality a seasoning-free tragedy and smiled like someone who had already found three ways to make trouble useful.
Each introduction was brief, bright, and safely public. Aaron did not linger long enough to make Phoenix look like he was collecting celebrity attention; he only made certain the room saw Phoenix being welcomed. That distinction mattered.
By the time Aaron released him with a dramatic flourish, Phoenix had gathered names, impressions, possible allies, possible dangers, and a much clearer understanding of the room. He also understood Aaron a little better. Beneath the glitter, the artist had shielded him with deliberate care.
"Go on," Aaron murmured, nodding toward the chef clusters near the jade-and-bronze tables. "Greet your fellow culinary warriors before anyone accuses me of monopolizing you."
Phoenix laughed softly. "That would be terrible for your image."
"My image thrives under accusation," Aaron replied. "Yours is still being introduced. Be adorable, be terrifying, and be careful who mistakes one for the other."
Phoenix inclined his head, then turned toward the small group where Theo Blackwood stood with Caelum, Atlas, and Andromeda Sunflare. Solaris stirred through the bond, suddenly alert again.
'Ready?' Solaris asked.
'Always,' Phoenix replied, letting his expression soften into shy politeness as he walked forward.

~ Operation: Absolutely Do Not Open the Confidential Envelope ~
Chibi Phoenix stood in the middle of a tiny spotlight, holding the sealed production envelope at arm's length with a pair of kitchen tongs. Red warning symbols flashed above his head while ominous music played from absolutely nowhere.
With a dramatic puff of glitter, Chibi Solaris appeared in a miniature detective cape, a crooked hat, and a magnifying glass nearly twice his size. Behind him unfolded an investigation board covered in red string, sketches of the envelope, three question marks, a badly drawn camera drone, and one note that simply read: SUSPICIOUS VIBES.
"Mama," Solaris announced, tapping the board with a pointer, "I have concluded that production does not want us to open the envelope here because it contains either a secret mission, a terrible surprise, or coupons." Chibi Phoenix stared at him. "That is not detective work. That is reading comprehension with accessories."
A chibi camera drone descended from above, wearing a fake mustache and carrying a tiny sign that read REACTION FOOTAGE? Chibi Phoenix tucked the envelope behind his back. Solaris gasped, raised his magnifying glass like a sword, and shouted, "The suspect is attempting unauthorized snacking!" The drone flashed a second sign: JUST ONE LITTLE SPOILER?
"Confidential means no snacks for the cameras," Solaris declared. He slapped a paper seal across the envelope, then wrapped it in red string, two oven mitts, a soup ladle, and what appeared to be an entire blanket fort. Chibi Phoenix pinched the bridge of his nose. "You have made it easier to steal." Solaris froze, studied the wobbling pile, and quietly added a handwritten sign: PROPERTY OF A VERY SCARY OMEGA.
The camera drone considered the sign, slowly backed away, and changed its request to REACTION FOOTAGE FROM A RESPECTFUL DISTANCE? Phoenix sighed. "Better." Solaris puffed out his tiny chest. "Case solved."
Somewhere offscreen, production quietly added three new lines to tomorrow's briefing notes: "Do not challenge the system spirit," "Do not disguise camera drones," and "Under no circumstances mention coupons."
