He scratched the back of his head as the referee formally announced him as the winner of the Joint Chūnin Exams, his mutter about how troublesome the ceremony was barely audible over the crowd's roar.
Renjiro observed Darui with genuine respect rather than resentment. The boy had earned the victory; he had adapted around his elemental disadvantage instead of trying to overpower Sora, demonstrating a tactical intelligence that would serve him well in the years ahead.
Ay was visibly proud, his massive frame radiating satisfaction as he watched his village's prodigy receive the recognition he deserved. The Lightning Daimyo celebrated Kumo's dominance with the particular enthusiasm of someone who had just seen his nation's superiority demonstrated on an international stage.
The Fire Daimyo was disappointed, but Sora's performance had salvaged some of his opinion of Konoha. One civilian-born orphan had nearly carried the village's reputation; that was not nothing.
The formal ceremony began after the arena settled. Minato and Ay descended from the VIP section to the arena floor, creating a strong visual; the Fourth Hokage and Fourth Raikage standing together, their respective villages watching, and former wartime enemies publicly celebrating cooperation.
Minato presented Konoha's prize to Darui; the chakra-conductive trench blades. He explained their ability to efficiently transmit elemental chakra, his voice carrying the weight of his praise.
"These blades are forged from high-grade chakra-conductive metal," Minato said. "They are capable of transmitting elemental chakra with exceptional efficiency. They are a practical weapon, not merely a ceremonial treasure."
He praised Darui specifically for his tactical intelligence rather than simply his combat strength.
"You demonstrated remarkable adaptability," Minato continued. "You recognised the elemental disadvantage and adapted your strategy rather than stubbornly fighting against it. That is the mark of a true shinobi."
Darui accepted respectfully but remained understated, his response polite but brief.
Ay then presented the Lightning-Forged Armour Scroll, his delivery much more physically expressive. He laughed loudly, clapped Darui on the back with enough force to stagger a lesser shinobi, and declared proudly that Darui had represented Kumo well. The crowd celebrated, their enthusiasm a testament to the village's pride in its champion.
Renjiro watched the ceremony and recognised the political symbolism. Kumo had won, and Konoha had lost publicly. Yet the joint ceremony prevented the result from becoming openly antagonistic. The diplomatic machinery was functioning exactly as intended.
As the ceremony continued, Renjiro noticed Sora being taken toward the medical section. He briefly watched the unconscious genin being carried away, mentally noting that he would check on him later. His attention then returned to the more immediate political problem; the Suna rogues, Kumo's security failure, and the opportunity Minato had been waiting for.
The crowd gradually dispersed as the public ceremony ended. Daimyo, Kage, senior officials, and military representatives withdrew toward their private chambers. The atmosphere changed dramatically once the public disappeared; the smiles and diplomatic applause vanished, replaced by the particular tension of closed-door politics.
Minato quietly signalled Renjiro to follow him. Ay and Makarui were summoned to a closed-door meeting.
The closed-door meeting was held in a private chamber, its walls thick enough to contain the most sensitive conversations. The room initially carried the confidence of the victorious Kumo leadership; Ay assumed the meeting would concern the successful examination, future cooperation, trade, or possibly the next joint examination. Minato remained completely calm, and Renjiro said very little initially.
Makarui made a remark about Kumo's successful performance, subtly reinforcing their advantage.
"The examination was a resounding success," she said. "Kumo's genin demonstrated exceptional skill. The cooperation between our villages has never been stronger."
Minato placed the stasis scroll containing the four Suna rogues on the table. Ay immediately recognised that this was not a ceremonial document; his expression shifted, the confidence of moments before replaced by cautious attention.
Minato calmly explained the situation, his voice carrying the weight of his authority.
"Four foreign shinobi infiltrated the Valley of the Crags during the second stage. They wore Kumo uniforms and carried concealed equipment. Their objective was to reach and eliminate Konoha genin."
Ay's expression changed immediately. Makarui was caught off guard, her professional composure cracking for just a moment.
Renjiro then took over the explanation, his voice calm and methodical. He produced the interrogation records and examination logs, explaining that the rogues had been interrogated after being placed into controlled stasis. Their identities and affiliations were confirmed as Sunagakure rogue shinobi.
"Their movements were reconstructed using Kurenai's sensory records, Kakashi's tracking observations, their equipment, their chakra signatures, and the location where they entered," Renjiro said. "Most importantly, they entered through the unmapped northern corridor. No ordinary examination access route should have allowed them through. They bypassed Kumo's outer security network."
He placed the final report in front of Ay.
Ay reacted defensively. His voice carried the weight of his suspicion as he demanded to know whether Konoha was accusing Kumo of deliberately allowing the infiltration.
Minato carefully avoided making a direct accusation; instead, he presented the two possibilities. Either Kumo's security was catastrophically incompetent, or someone inside Kumo had deliberately facilitated the infiltration. Either possibility was politically disastrous.
Renjiro pointed out the implication; if the rogues had killed the Konoha genin, their deaths could easily have been attributed to the Valley's lethal terrain. Kumo could have avoided responsibility, and the examination would have continued. Ay's confidence began disappearing, and Makarui realized how serious the situation was.
Minato introduced the real leverage; the Fire Daimyo and Lightning Daimyo were both still in Kumo. If Konoha publicly presented evidence that foreign rogues had entered Kumo-controlled examination territory, worn Kumo uniforms, bypassed Kumo security, and nearly assassinated foreign participants, then Kumo's international reputation would suffer. Ay understood that this could become a diplomatic disaster, especially because the Chūnin Exams were supposed to demonstrate peace and cooperation. A security breach during the event would undermine Kumo's credibility.
"I do not want to publicly embarrass Kumo," Minato said, his voice carrying the weight of his strategic thinking. "I want assurances."
Renjiro presented a prepared list of concessions; expanded Konoha-Kumo trade access, reduced tariffs on selected military and civilian goods, preferential trade routes through the Land of Lightning, formal intelligence-sharing regarding rogue shinobi, mutual non-aggression guarantees, recognition of Konoha's commercial rights within designated Kumo markets, stronger joint-border security protocols, and compensation for examination-related security failures. The demands were framed as reasonable measures to prevent another incident.
Ay initially resisted, his pride warring with political necessity. Renjiro remained calm, and Minato never threatened him directly. Instead, Minato essentially made the choice obvious; sign the agreement privately, or allow the evidence to become public.
Ay realised that Kumo had very little room to manoeuvre. His earlier arena confidence was completely gone; he understood that Konoha could walk away from the exam having lost the tournament while still winning the diplomatic battle. The reversal was stark; Kumo had won the Chūnin Exams, but Konoha had won the negotiation.
Makarui was particularly more than uncomfortable. She remembered Renjiro's earlier warning about Kumo's proctors "becoming blind," and she now realised that he had not been simply posturing. She looked toward him with a mixture of irritation and reluctant respect. Renjiro remained completely composed, never gloating, his attitude essentially one of calm acceptance.
You wanted to play the political game, his expression seemed to say. So did we.
Ay eventually signed. The agreement contained trade concessions, non-aggression provisions, security cooperation, investigation of the northern corridor, and confidential handling of the Suna rogue incident. Minato accepted the document, and the political crisis was contained.
Renjiro ensured that the stasis scroll remained in Konoha's custody until the broader investigation was complete. Minato privately made clear that the Kage summit would be where the larger issue was addressed.
After leaving the meeting, Renjiro headed toward the arena infirmary. The mood shifted from political strategy to something much quieter. He found Sora unconscious and recovering from the championship battle; medical nin reported severe chakra exhaustion, muscle damage, and significant fatigue, but no immediately life-threatening injuries.
Renjiro asked to examine him personally. He applied his refined sensory perception, beginning the process of healing Sora's damaged pathways and easing the strain on his body. He noticed that Sora's chakra network was recovering unusually quickly; his reserves were still enormous despite having fought multiple consecutive matches.
Then something caught his attention. He pushed his sensory perception deeper, and something felt wrong—or rather, familiar. The chakra wasn't simply large; its structure was distinctive. Dense, extremely resilient, and overflowing with vitality. Renjiro paused, his expression changing for the first time in the chapter.
Uzumaki chakra.
Not vaguely similar, not simply someone with unusually high reserves. The structural characteristics were unmistakable to someone who understood Uzumaki chakra intimately. His mind immediately began reconstructing the past, connecting Sora to the survivors from the destruction of Uzushiogakure. Everything suddenly fit.
He realised the horrifying irony. Danzō's policy had been designed to prevent Konoha's valuable bloodlines from being exposed. Instead, it had accidentally selected an unregistered Uzumaki survivor. Worse, Sora had been sent into Kumo, fought in front of the entire village, and had his chakra reserves exposed. He had been almost killed by foreign infiltrators, and nobody had apparently realised what he was.
Renjiro's anger became colder rather than explosive.
"But how the hell did those bastards sneak in one of their children under my nose?"
