Chapter 917 - 916-Sora

The one-week intermission passed in a blur of preparation and quiet observation. Renjiro spent the days reviewing the examination results, monitoring the surviving Konoha genin, maintaining the secret of the captured Suna rogues, and waiting for Minato's arrival. The stasis scroll containing the four unconscious infiltrators remained securely hidden among his personal belongings, its presence a constant reminder of the larger game unfolding beneath the surface of the tournament.

The political atmosphere around the examination had intensified. Kumo was increasingly confident after dominating Stage Two, and Konoha's delegation was under considerably more scrutiny. The Fire Daimyo, who had arrived with Minato, had made his displeasure known in private conversations, questioning why Konoha's performance had been so lacklustre. Renjiro had deflected the questions with diplomatic answers, but he knew that the explanation would eventually have to come.

The Final Phase took place in Kumo's enormous mountain arena; massive stone seating was carved into the mountainside, creating a natural amphitheatre that could hold thousands of spectators. The central combat arena was enormous, its surface marked with seals that would contain the violence of the matches. Kumo banners surrounded the stadium, their white and red fabric rippling in the mountain wind. Security shinobi were positioned throughout the structure, their eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of trouble.

The atmosphere was completely different from Stage Two. This was no longer a survival exercise; it was public political theatre. Every victory and defeat was being watched by civilians, shinobi, clan representatives, military commanders, the Daimyo, and the Kage. The weight of the moment pressed down on the arena like a physical force.

The crowd reacted as the VIP delegation entered. Minato Namikaze arrived in full Hokage attire, his white and red robes a stark contrast to the grey stone of the arena. He was accompanied by the Fire Daimyo, their presence signalling the importance of the event. They entered the highest VIP suite, its position commanding a perfect view of the arena.

Across from them sat the Fourth Raikage Ay and the Lightning Daimyo, their presence radiating the particular confidence of hosts who expected their village to perform well. Senior Kumo officials flanked them, their expressions carrying the weight of their authority.

The seating arrangement itself became political symbolism. Konoha and Kumo were technically allies, and their leaders were literally sitting beside one another. But the recent war still hung over the event; memories of battle were not easily erased by treaties and ceremonies.

Renjiro observed the two Kage briefly. Ay's presence radiated confidence; the Raikage had always been a man of action, and his village's performance in the earlier stages had only reinforced his belief in Kumo's superiority. Minato remained composed and diplomatic, his expression revealing nothing of his thoughts.

Before the opening ceremony, Renjiro privately met Minato. He brought the sealed evidence, his movements deliberate and precise. He handed over the stasis scroll containing the four Suna rogues, and Minato immediately understood the seriousness of the situation.

"Four infiltrators," Renjiro explained, his voice low and controlled. "Suna rogue identities, fake Kumo uniforms, hidden sealing equipment. They successfully infiltrated the Valley of the Crags during Stage Two, and their apparent intention was to assassinate Konoha genin."

He paused, letting the weight of the information settle.

"Kakashi's theory is that either Kumo security failed catastrophically, or someone deliberately allowed the infiltration."

Minato studied the stasis scroll, his expression unreadable. He didn't immediately order an investigation; instead, he thought politically. If the information was revealed now, the tournament could be cancelled, Kumo could deny involvement, evidence could disappear, relations could collapse, and whoever orchestrated the incident would know that Konoha had discovered them.

"We reveal this now, and we lose the advantage," Minato said, his voice carrying the weight of his strategic thinking.

Renjiro understood. "And afterwards?"

Minato's response was calm, measured.

"We reveal four living witnesses to the Raikage."

Renjiro nodded. The evidence was no longer merely proof; it was a bargaining weapon.

The opening ceremony was a display of formal diplomacy. Minato and Ay formally acknowledged the joint examination, their words carrying the weight of their respective villages. The crowd cheered heavily for Kumo, their enthusiasm a reflection of their confidence. Konoha received a more muted response, the applause polite but restrained.

Renjiro noticed the difference. He remembered the council meeting; Danzo's strategy had now produced exactly the political image he had warned about. Yet he remained silent, his expression neutral, his thoughts hidden.

The tournament bracket was revealed, and the twelve surviving genin were introduced. Three Konoha genin stood opposite nine Kumo shinobi, the disparity visually humiliating. The crowd began to assume that Kumo would sweep the examination, their confidence building with each passing moment.

Renjiro studied every remaining candidate, his eyes lingering briefly on Darui. The young genin looked as bored as ever, his posture relaxed, his expression unreadable.

The preliminary bracket began, and Kumo's surviving genin demonstrated their superiority. Their training emphasised endurance, explosive movement, Lightning Release enhancement, close-range combat, and aggression. Konoha's remaining three candidates were immediately placed under enormous pressure.

The first Konoha elimination was brutal. One Konoha genin entered the arena, and their opponent was a physically dominant Kumo fighter. The Kumo shinobi overwhelmed them with speed, Raiton-enhanced strikes, and aggressive pressure. The Konoha genin attempted to recover with ninjutsu, but the Kumo fighter refused to give them breathing room. The match ended decisively, and Konoha lost its first remaining finalist.

The Fire Daimyo visibly shifted in his seat, his irritation evident. Renjiro remained expressionless, and Minato watched silently.

Almost immediately afterwards, the second Konoha genin fought. This opponent was even more aggressive, their attacks relentless and precise. The Konoha genin displayed some clever tactics but could not match Kumo's physical conditioning. Another decisive defeat followed, and Kumo spectators erupted in celebration.

The arena atmosphere became increasingly one-sided, and the Fire Daimyo became openly irritated. He muttered about Konoha's poor showing, his voice carrying the weight of his displeasure. Minato remained calm, but internally, the Hokage recognised the political cost. Danzo had wanted to protect Konoha's future assets; instead, Konoha had displayed almost none of its actual strength. Kumo was now being handed a public demonstration of superiority.

The final Konoha representative was Sora; quiet, unassuming, civilian-born, orphaned, with no famous clan, no prestigious bloodline, and no political family. Exactly the kind of genin Danzo had wanted to send. Renjiro studied him, remembering his examination performance. Sora had never been spectacularly flashy; he simply survived.

His chakra reserves, however, were abnormal. Renjiro realised that Sora possessed an enormous chakra pool.

Sora entered his first match, and his opponent assumed he would be an easy victory. Sora demonstrated Wind Release; his techniques were exceptionally sharp, highly compressed, efficient, and precise. Rather than overwhelming his opponent with brute force, Sora systematically dismantled their options. His massive chakra reserves allowed him to maintain pressure far longer than expected. Sora won.

The arena became quieter. The Fire Daimyo began paying attention.

Sora advanced again to the quarterfinal. His next Kumo opponent was much stronger, and the fight became a test of endurance. Sora repeatedly used Wind Release to control distance, and his opponent attempted to close the gap. Sora's reserves seemed almost absurd; he kept producing high-level Wind Release techniques without showing meaningful fatigue.

Sora eventually won again. Renjiro became genuinely interested, recognising the irony. Konoha's supposedly "safe" roster had produced almost nothing; yet the one civilian-born orphan nobody expected to matter was now carrying the entire village's reputation.

The Fire Daimyo, previously irritated, became animated. He leaned forward and began openly supporting Sora, his enthusiasm a stark contrast to his earlier displeasure. The mood of the Konoha VIP section changed; for the first time since the tournament began, Konoha had something to cheer for.

Sora reached the semifinals, facing another powerful Kumo fighter. The opponent relied heavily on Raiton, but Sora's Wind Release naturally disrupted and cut through several Lightning techniques. The fight demonstrated the elemental interaction clearly; lightning was powerful, but Sora's compressed wind could sever its attack structure. Sora used his enormous chakra reserves to sustain the battle and eventually won.

The crowd was stunned. Konoha had avoided complete humiliation, and Sora was now the only thing preventing an entirely Kumo final.

Darui's semifinal was a study in efficiency. His apparent laziness disappeared when combat began; he combined Raiton, swordsmanship, feints, tactical positioning, and hand-to-hand combat. He didn't waste chakra, and he studied his opponent constantly. Darui won his semifinal with relatively little unnecessary movement.

Renjiro recognised the difference. Sora had overwhelming reserves and exceptional elemental power; Darui had battlefield intelligence refined far beyond his age.

The championship match was announced: Sora versus Darui. The contrast was immediately obvious. Sora had massive chakra reserves, powerful Wind Release, a straightforward but highly effective style, and calm determination. He was fighting for Konoha's reputation. Darui had exceptional tactical intelligence, Raiton, swordsmanship, close combat ability, deceptive movement, and natural combat instincts.

The Fire Daimyo openly cheered for Sora. Ay watched Darui with obvious interest. Minato observed silently. Renjiro watched both genin carefully.

Darui opened with Raiton, and Sora countered with Wind Release. The Wind Release tore through the lightning techniques, and the crowd reacted dramatically. Darui quickly realised that directly matching Sora's Wind Release with Lightning was inefficient. He changed strategy, demonstrating why he was different; he didn't stubbornly fight the elemental disadvantage; he adapted.

Darui began using Raiton indirectly; instead of attempting to overpower Sora's Wind Release, he used lightning to accelerate his movement, manipulated the timing of attacks, used sword strikes to force Sora into predictable defensive positions, and employed feints to make Sora waste chakra. Sora responded with increasingly powerful Wind Release, his chakra reserves allowing him to keep fighting at an absurd pace.

Sora revealed just how enormous his chakra reserves actually were. Darui expected him to slow down, but he didn't. Sora continued producing powerful Wind Release techniques, and the arena began to sustain collateral damage from their attacks.

Darui realised he could not simply wait for Sora to run out. The battle became Sora's overwhelming resources versus Darui's superior decision-making.

Darui began deliberately losing small exchanges; Sora interpreted this as an opening. Darui was actually studying Sora's attack rhythm, identifying his preferred stance, how he transitioned between Wind Release techniques, how he protected his blind side, and how he reacted when an opponent closed distance. Darui gradually built a pattern.

Sora unleashed one of his strongest Wind Release attacks, and Darui appeared to be caught. At the last moment, Darui used a feint and slipped through the edge of the attack. Raiton enhanced his movement as he closed the distance. Sora tried to react with another Wind Release technique, but Darui anticipated it. He used a combination of body movement, feint, sword positioning, and hand-to-hand combat to land the decisive counter-strike. Sora was knocked unconscious.

Sora fell. The Konoha section went silent, and then the Kumo crowd erupted. Medical personnel immediately entered the arena, confirming that Sora was alive but unconscious. The referee announced Darui of Kumogakure as the winner of the Joint Chūnin Exams.

Ay was clearly pleased; Darui had represented Kumo extremely well. The Lightning Daimyo was proud of Kumo's performance. The Fire Daimyo was disappointed by the loss but surprisingly proud of Sora, recognising that he had prevented Konoha from being completely swept.

Minato remained calm, congratulating the Kumo leadership.

Renjiro watched Darui carefully. He wasn't angry at Sora, and he wasn't angry at Darui. Darui simply proved he was the better fighter.
