CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

THE ROYAL GALA

The following morning, Mia woke up earlier than usual.

She had a busy day ahead of her.

Her first major royal gala as Princess Mia was taking place that evening, and the entire palace was already preparing for it.

Servants moved through the halls carrying decorations and arrangements.

Mia stood in front of her wardrobe, looking through several dresses.

She finally chose a long elegant gown and began getting ready.

By the time she came downstairs, Nathan was already in the sitting room.

He looked up when he saw her.

"You look beautiful."

Mia smiled.

"Thank you."

There was no teasing between them.

No disagreement.

Just a simple compliment.

Nathan stood.

"Are you ready?"

"I think so."

He offered his arm.

Mia looked at it for a moment before taking it.

Together, they left for the gala.

---

The palace ballroom was filled with people.

Royal families from different regions had arrived, along with government officials, wealthy families, and important guests.

Mia immediately felt the weight of everyone's attention.

Whispers followed her as she walked beside Nathan.

"That's the new princess."

"She looks lovely."

"I wonder how she's adjusting to royal life."

Mia heard some of the comments but refused to let them affect her.

She smiled and greeted the guests.

Nathan stayed nearby but allowed her to handle most of the conversations herself.

Mia was surprised by how naturally she managed.

She spoke politely.

She listened carefully.

She even remembered the names of several guests she had met only once.

Nathan watched from across the room.

He hadn't expected her to adapt so quickly.

Then the evening took an unexpected turn.

One of the important guests approached Mia.

"Your Highness, may I speak with you privately?"

Mia nodded.

"Of course."

They stepped aside.

The woman explained that there was a disagreement concerning one of the charity projects Mia had recently become involved with.

Apparently, the funding had been delayed, and several families were waiting for assistance.

Mia listened carefully.

Instead of immediately calling Nathan, she asked questions.

She wanted to understand the situation herself.

After several minutes, she came up with a solution.

"We'll make sure the families receive temporary assistance while the larger funding issue is being resolved."

The woman looked relieved.

"Thank you, Your Highness."

Mia nodded.

"You're welcome."

When she returned to the ballroom, Nathan approached her.

"What happened?"

Mia explained everything.

Nathan listened.

"You handled it well."

Mia smiled.

"I was nervous."

"It didn't show."

She looked at him.

"That's because I didn't want anyone to notice."

Nathan laughed softly.

"You've learned quickly."

Mia looked around the ballroom.

"I think I'm beginning to understand."

"Understand what?"

"That being a princess isn't only about wearing beautiful clothes and attending events."

Nathan nodded.

"Exactly."

"It's about people."

He smiled.

"Now you're getting it."

Mia looked at him.

"I still don't like all the rules."

"You don't have to."

She smiled.

"Good."

---

Later that evening, the music began.

Several couples moved onto the dance floor.

Nathan looked at Mia.

"Would you like to dance?"

She hesitated.

"I don't know."

"You've danced before."

"Not in front of half the kingdom."

Nathan offered his hand.

"Then don't look at them."

Mia looked at his hand.

Then she placed hers in it.

They walked onto the dance floor.

The music began.

Nathan guided her through the first steps.

Mia relaxed.

For a moment, she forgot about the people watching.

She simply followed the rhythm.

When the song ended, the guests applauded.

Mia smiled.

Nathan leaned closer.

"You survived."

She laughed.

"Barely."

They returned to their seats.

Mia looked around the ballroom.

A strange feeling settled over her.

She had once thought becoming a princess meant losing herself.

But perhaps she had been wrong.

Maybe she could learn this life without giving up the person she had always been.

And beside her, Nathan seemed to be reaching the same conclusion.

Mia didn't need to be protected from every difficulty.

Sometimes, she simply needed someone who trusted her enough to face them herself.
