Chapter 23 — The Beach Challenge
The next morning, the resort was already awake.
The sound of waves filled the air while sunlight poured through the windows of the large beach house.
Mia woke up earlier than usual.
She changed into something comfortable and walked outside.
The beach was almost empty.
She stood near the water, letting the cool breeze brush against her face.
For the first time in a long while, she wasn't thinking about royal duties, family expectations, or anything else.
She was simply enjoying the morning.
"Mia."
She turned around.
Nathan was walking toward her.
"You woke up early."
"So did you."
"I couldn't sleep."
"Why?"
Nathan shrugged.
"I don't know."
Mia smiled.
"Come on."
"Where?"
"To the beach."
"We're already at the beach."
"You know what I mean."
She walked toward the water, and Nathan followed.
They spent the next few minutes walking along the shore.
Their conversation was easy.
No awkwardness.
No unnecessary arguments.
Just the two of them talking like they used to.
Then they heard shouting from behind them.
"Mia!"
She turned.
One of her brothers was waving at them.
"Come back! We're doing something!"
Mia looked at Nathan.
"What now?"
"I have a feeling we're about to regret asking."
They returned to the resort.
Everyone was gathered outside.
A long table had been set up with different beach games.
One of Mia's brothers grinned.
"We're having a competition."
Mia folded her arms.
"What kind?"
"Everything."
Nathan laughed.
"That sounds dangerous."
"Exactly."
Teams were formed.
Mia and Nathan ended up on the same team.
Mia looked at him.
"Don't slow me down."
Nathan smiled.
"I was going to say the same thing."
Their first challenge was a beach relay.
Mia ran first.
She was surprisingly fast.
Nathan watched from the finish line.
When she reached him, she handed him the flag.
"Your turn."
Nathan took off.
Mia cheered.
"Go!"
Their siblings immediately noticed how naturally they worked together.
They didn't need to discuss strategy.
They simply understood what the other person was doing.
Nathan finished his part, and their team won the round.
Mia jumped excitedly.
"We won!"
Nathan laughed.
"You were certain we would."
"Because I knew I had the right teammate."
Nathan looked at her.
"Was that a compliment?"
"Don't get used to it."
He laughed.
---
The next challenge was a memory game.
Each team was shown a group of objects for thirty seconds.
They then had to remember as many as possible.
Mia and Nathan looked at each other.
"I'll remember the left side," Mia whispered.
"I'll take the right."
They memorized everything.
When the objects were covered, they started answering.
Their team got almost every item correct.
Mia turned toward Nathan.
"See?"
"We make a good team."
She smiled.
Neither of them thought twice about the words.
But their family did.
Sofia slowly looked at her husband.
He simply smiled.
---
By afternoon, everyone was exhausted.
Some were swimming.
Others were lying beneath umbrellas.
Mia sat near the edge of the water with her feet in the sand.
Nathan sat beside her.
For a while, they didn't speak.
Mia looked around.
"Everyone looks tired."
Nathan nodded.
"You were the one who wanted to win."
"And we did."
"You nearly knocked me into the water during the relay."
"You survived."
"Fortunately."
Mia laughed.
She picked up a small shell and examined it.
"Do you remember when we used to collect these?"
Nathan looked at the shell.
"Yes."
"You always kept the biggest ones."
"Because you kept stealing mine."
"I didn't steal them."
"You did."
"I borrowed them."
Nathan laughed.
Mia smiled.
The conversation slowly faded into silence.
She looked out at the ocean.
"I think I needed this."
Nathan looked at her.
"Me too."
They remained there together.
No arguments.
No teasing.
No questions.
Just comfortable silence.
Neither noticed how close they were sitting.
Neither felt the need to move away.
From the resort house, their families could see them.
But this time, nobody made a joke.
They simply watched.
Because whatever was happening between Mia and Nathan wasn't something that needed to be pointed out anymore.
It was becoming obvious in the little things.
The way they looked for each other.
The way they naturally worked together.
The way silence between them no longer felt empty.
And perhaps, without realizing it, Mia and Nathan were slowly building something that neither of them had planned for.
Something neither of them had given a name to yet.
