Chapter 23: Crimson Wrath

Stillness.

Not the hush of twilight, nor the breath-held pause between heartbeats—but a silence so vast it devoured echoes, as if the world had exhaled and forgotten how to inhale.

Fifteen meters of sinew, flame, and fury—

was retreating.

One footfall like a collapsing temple.

Then another, shaking the bones of the earth.

Its eyes—molten orbs of liquid gold—remained fixed on Seraphina.

And Fenrir.

Trembling.

Not from wrath.

From terror.

The kind that slithers up the spine of prey when the shadow above grows too long, too certain.

No one moved.

No voice dared pierce the air.

The battlefield, once a maelstrom of fire and screaming steel, now lay suspended in a glassy calm, as though time itself had frozen in dread.

Then—

"...Why is it stepping back?" Fenrir whispered, his voice barely more than a ripple in the stillness.

No answer.

Only silence, thick and shared, binding every soul present in a single unspoken question.

---

The giant's breath came in ragged, scorched gasps.

"The Child of Ruin..."

His voice cracked like dry stone under pressure.

"Why do you shield him...?"

His gaze slid toward Seraphina, heavy with warning.

"You know what festers inside him."

Silence.

The vampire stood untouched—ethereal as moonlight on snow, unmoved by wind or war.

Her crimson hair danced like embers caught in a winter storm, swirling in unseen currents.

Her eyes—twin rubies lit from within—glowed faintly against the encroaching gloom, pulsing with quiet fire.

"I know exactly who he is."

The giant's face contorted.

"Then you must understand—"

His voice surged, trembling with desperation.

"If he lives—"

"He will unravel existence."

Silence.

A clawed finger, thick as a tree trunk, pointed at Fenrir.

"His kind feasted on gods."

"They swallowed suns whole."

"They ground civilizations into dust beneath their feet."

The titan's frame quivered, ancient memories flashing behind his golden eyes.

"We fought them."

"We feared them."

"We watched entire constellations die in silence."

His gaze flared, blazing like dying stars.

"And now..."

"The Last Sovereign walks again."

No reply.

Not even from Fenrir.

For once, words had fled him—abandoned him like rats from a sinking ship.

---

Then—

Seraphina smiled.

Just a flicker—a curve at the corner of her lips, subtle as a shadow passing over stone.

"So?"

Silence.

The giant blinked, stunned.

"...What?"

"So?"

Her voice was smooth, dark as polished obsidian pulled from volcanic depths.

The giant faltered.

"He is dangerous!"

"So?"

"He could bring ruin to all life!"

"So?"

"He might end the world!"

Her smile deepened, but not with warmth.

"Then we'll stop him."

Silence.

Every eye turned to her—soldiers, mages, monsters alike.

Even Fenrir stared, mouth slightly open.

The giant gaped, disbelief etched into every line of his molten face.

"...You would fight him?"

"If I must."

"...You would kill him?"

For the first time—

the smile vanished.

Her crimson eyes turned to glacial ice, sharp enough to cut the soul.

"I said stop him."

The giant froze.

The air thickened, heavy with unspoken threat.

Frost crept across the battlefield, spreading like veins of silver through ash.

Then—

she stepped forward.

Graceful.

Deliberate.

Each step a whisper against the silence.

"But before that..."

Her face became a mask of porcelain serenity, flawless and cold.

"You threatened someone under my protection."

Silence.

The giant shifted, unease rippling through his massive form.

"...That wasn't personal."

"It is now."

"..."

"..."

"Please don't make this awkward."

No one could explain it—

but suddenly, the Demon Giant looked as if it had glimpsed its own funeral pyre.

At the words "The Child of Ruin," Seraphina's crimson eyes narrowed—just a fraction.

A flicker.

Then her expression smoothed once more, unreadable as a sealed tomb.

---

"Question."

All heads swiveled toward Fenrir.

"...Can someone tell me why she just became the most terrifying thing here?"

"You're only realizing this now?" Kael muttered, rubbing his temples.

---

Then—

the giant roared.

Darkness erupted from his body like ink spilled into water.

"Enough!"

Fear curdled into blind rage.

"If you insist on shielding him..."

"Then you all die!"

BOOOOM!

The earth detonated.

Shadows exploded outward in a suffocating wave.

Pressure crushed the air, bending light and snapping breath from lungs.

Weaker warriors collapsed like puppets with severed strings.

The giant raised fists like boulders crowned with flame.

Then charged.

A living avalanche.

A force of nature barreling toward them.

---

Fenrir's instincts screamed.

Move.

Run.

Survive.

But before his muscles could twitch—

Seraphina was gone.

Boom!

The ground where she'd stood erupted in a plume of shattered stone.

An instant later—

she stood before the charging titan.

Eyes across the battlefield widened.

She looked impossibly small—fragile, almost.

Then—

she struck.

Silence.

A slender fist.

Against a mountain.

For one heartbeat—

nothing.

Then—

BOOOOOOOOM!

The world detonated.

The giant flew.

Not stumbled.

Not reeled.

Flew.

His colossal body became a black streak, hurtling across the district, crashing through rooftops and walls, vanishing in a distant explosion that lit the horizon like a dying star.

Silence.

Absolute.

Fenrir blinked.

"..."

"..."

"...What?"

---

Kael crossed his arms.

"Yeah."

"What do you mean, yeah?!"

"That's exactly how I felt the first time."

Fenrir slowly turned toward Seraphina.

The vampire stood calmly, brushing a speck of dust from her sleeve.

As though she hadn't just hurled a mountain-sized demon across the city.

"...How strong are you?"

She tilted her head, considering.

"I've never measured."

"..."

"..."

"...That's horrifying."

A few nervous laughs slipped out.

Even now.

---

Then—

the earth trembled.

Once.

Twice.

A furious roar split the night, tearing through the silence like a blade.

The giant rose.

Blood streaked his face like war paint.

His molten eyes burned with pure, unfiltered rage.

"You...!"

"How dare you strike me!"

Seraphina tilted her head, curious.

"...Would being kicked have been less offensive?"

Silence.

Even Adrian buried his face in his palm.

Fenrir nearly choked on a laugh.

---

The giant roared again.

This time, crimson energy surged from his body like blood from a wound.

The sky blackened.

The Rift above widened, bleeding darkness.

Expressions darkened.

"That's not good," Raphael murmured.

"...I don't like the sound of that," Fenrir admitted.

"Neither do I."

---

Darkness poured from the Rift.

Then—

a hand emerged.

Massive.

Clawed.

Silence.

Everyone froze.

Then another.

And another.

Fenrir's breath caught.

"...Those are hands."

"Yes," Adrian said.

"I don't like that."

"No one does."

---

A second giant crawled out.

Then a third.

Then a fourth.

Silence.

Total.

Fenrir scanned the horizon, the weight of impossibility pressing down.

"...This feels like cheating."

"It is," Elena replied.

"Wonderful."

---

Four Demon Giants now stood upon the battlefield.

Each radiated a pressure so immense it bent the air, capable of crushing ordinary beings into dust with a mere glance.

And yet—

they halted.

The moment their eyes fell upon Fenrir.

Silence.

Then—

one shrieked.

"IT'S HIM!"

Another pointed, voice cracking.

"THE CHILD OF RUIN!"

The third recoiled as if burned.

"WHY IS HE HERE?!"

The fourth simply turned.

And began walking back into the Rift.

Silence.

"..."

"..."

"...Did that one just surrender?" Fenrir asked.

"Looks like it," Adrian replied.

---

The first giant roared.

"We must destroy him!"

The second growled.

"Before he awakens!"

The third hesitated.

"Or... we could leave."

"NO!"

"...Fair enough."

---

Then—

Aetherion sighed.

"I was hoping for a quiet evening."

"You brought me here."

"Minor detail."

---

The old man stepped forward.

And in that instant—

the kindly tea seller dissolved.

In his place stood something ancient.

Something primordial.

Pressure descended like a collapsing sky.

The moonlight itself seemed to cower.

Even the giants froze, their fury replaced by dawning horror.

Aetherion smiled.

But no warmth touched his eyes.

"I believe..."

He cracked his neck, the sound like splitting stone.

"...you've caused enough trouble."

The air distorted.

Reality bent around him like silk in flame.

The giants' expressions shifted.

Fear.

Again.

One whispered:

"...Impossible."

Another staggered backward.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

The eldest slowly raised a trembling hand.

"You're..."

Aetherion tilted his head.

"Me?"

Silence.

Then—

all four giants screamed.

"THE SAGE OF STARS?!"

Silence.

Even Adrian's smirk vanished.

Raphael's blue eyes widened.

Selene inhaled sharply.

Yuna's white fox ears stood rigid.

The three dwarves looked as though their souls had fled their bodies.

"THE SAGE OF STARS?!" Borin squeaked.

"THE LEGENDARY SAGE?!" Durin shouted.

"WE HAD TEA WITH HIM?!" Thrain nearly fainted.

Even Elena's golden eyes widened.

And for the first time since meeting him—

Seraphina looked genuinely surprised.

---

Fenrir blinked.

Then slowly turned toward the old man.

"...You're famous too?"

Aetherion scratched his cheek, sheepish.

"A bit."

"Why does everyone here have secret identities?"

No one answered.

Because honestly—

it was a damn good question.

Far above the battlefield...

The Rift continued to bleed crimson light.

And somewhere within that endless darkness...

Something had been watching.

Watching the Child of Ruin.

Watching the Sage of Stars.

Waiting.

Then—

two ancient golden eyes slowly opened.

And smiled.
