Chapter 29 - C-29: The Calm Before The Storm

Chapter 29: The Calm Before the Storm

A faint breeze swept across the empty training grounds, lifting blades of grass into the air.

Silence dominated the field, settling over the earth like a velvet shroud.

For the first time since entering the mysterious Midnight Exchange...

Fenrir was alone.

Well...

Not entirely.

Yuna was still there.

The fox spirit stretched her lithe body before settling onto the grass with feline grace, her nine tails fanning out behind her like silver flames.

"You know," she said, her golden eyes studying him carefully, "you have a very troubled expression."

Fenrir blinked.

"What?"

"That look." She tilted her head. "The expression of someone who has just realized the universe is working against them."

"...I don't think that's an expression."

"It is, I've seen it on corpses." She nodded with solemn certainty.

"That's... reassuring."

"It usually is."

Silence settled between them once more.

Fenrir's gaze drifted toward the distant horizon, where Aetherion and the others had disappeared.

His chest felt tight.

Something was wrong.

Not strange.

Not unusual.

Just...Wrong.

The creature behind the disappearances.

The cold that had crawled down his spine.

The sensation of unseen eyes watching him.

All of it pointed to the same conclusion.

Something was coming, something dangerous.

"...Something's coming," he muttered.

Yuna's ears twitched.

"You wanted to go with them, didn't you?"

Fenrir exhaled slowly.

"...Was it that obvious?"

"Painfully."

The wind seemed to still.

"...Yeah."

His voice was quiet.

"I did."

A pause.

"I hate being left behind."

Yuna watched him in silence.

"Because you're weak?"

The words struck like a hammer.

Because they were true.

Again.

Weak.

Too weak.

"Level Ten," he said with a bitter laugh. "A few days ago, I would have called that a miracle."

He looked toward the setting sun.

"...Now it feels like a joke."

Like dust on the boots of giants.

Suddenly—

Flick.

"Ow!"

Yuna lowered her hand.

"You're brooding over nonsense."

"I am weak."

"True."

"...Thanks."

"But that's not the foolish part."

Fenrir blinked "huh?".

She leaned closer, golden eyes meeting crimson ones.

"You're comparing yourself to legends."

Silence.

"You've met beings who have existed for centuries."

"Some for thousands of years," she added.

"They've fought wars, buried friends, and witnessed kingdoms rise and fall."

Another flick landed on his forehead.

"They've trained longer than you've been alive."

She folded her arms.

"And you're upset because after three days, you're not equal to them?"

"..."

"...When you put it that way..."

"Exactly."

Her smile softened.

"You're Level Ten after only a few days."

She looked at him as though he were the unusual one.

"Do you have any idea how extraordinary that is?"

Fenrir blinked.

"No?"

"Most people need years to reach Level Ten."

"...Years?"

She nodded.

"The gifted ones."

Then she smiled.

"The unfortunate ones need decades."

"..."

"Wait."

His eyes widened.

"Does that mean my growth rate is abnormal?"

Yuna burst into laughter.

"Abnormal?"

She wiped a tear from her eye.

"Unnatural doesn't even begin to describe it."

Fenrir froze.

He had never considered it that way.

From his perspective, everyone around him was a monster.

People he could never hope to catch up to.

But if Yuna was right...

Then his growth was not merely unusual.

It was terrifying.

A wildfire in a world of embers.

'OBLIVION.'

[Yes.]

'Is my growth rate really that extreme?'

[Affirmative.]

'Then why didn't you tell me?'

[Host did not ask.]

"..."

'...I hate that answer.'

[Statement recorded.]

Yuna suddenly stood.

"Come on."

Fenrir looked up.

"Where?"

"I'm hungry."

"...That's your reason?"

"It's a perfectly valid reason."

Before he could protest, she seized his wrist.

"Let's go."

---

A few minutes later, they were walking through the Midnight Exchange.

The city was alive.

Merchants called out from colorful stalls.

Beastkin hurried through the streets.

Elves conversed beneath glowing lanterns.

Dwarves argued loudly over gemstones.

Children ran through the crowds, laughing.

Life continued as though nothing were wrong.

Completely unaware that a storm was already gathering overhead.

A wolf-eared child darted past Fenrir.

An elderly vampire couple sipped tea on a balcony.

A dwarf and an elf nearly came to blows over a glowing crystal.

The city breathed.

Lived.

Smiled.

Yet the unease in his chest remained.

"You look like you're carrying the weight of a dying star," Yuna said.

"I can't help it."

She glanced at him.

"You trust them, don't you?"

"Aetherion and the others?"

He nodded.

"Of course."

"Then stop drowning in dread."

Silence.

She smiled.

"They're monsters, remember?"

Fenrir couldn't argue with that.

---

They stopped in front of a food stall.

Yuna immediately ordered enough food to feed an entire family.

Fenrir stared wide eyed.

"... just how much do you eat?"

She blinked adorably.

"I have nine tails."

"...And?"

She looked at him as though he were the one being unreasonable.

"That means I need nine times the amount of food."

"..."

"I'm fairly certain biology doesn't work that way."

"It absolutely does."

As they waited—

Fenrir suddenly stiffened.

There.

That feeling again.

Cold.

Ancient.

Predatory.

As though something impossible had fixed its gaze upon him.

Every muscle in his body tensed.

'OBLIVION.'

[Yes.]

'Do you sense it?'

[...]

Then—

[Unknown presence detected.]

Fenrir's jaw tightened.

Again.

Unknown.

He was beginning to hate that word.

Slowly, he scanned the street.

Nothing appeared unusual.

And yet he could feel it.

Something was watching him.

Something old.

Something hungry.

"Fenrir?"

He turned.

Yuna was staring at him.

"You stopped moving."

"...Did you feel anything?"

She frowned.

Her nose twitched once.

Then again.

Suddenly—

her expression changed.

"...Yuna?"

For the first time since he had met her—

Yuna looked genuinely afraid.

"...I don't know," she whispered.

"I've never smelled anything like it."

A chill ran through him.

Then—

it vanished.

The pressure.

The cold.

The sensation of being watched.

Gone.

As though it had never existed.

Yuna looked around once more.

Then slowly relaxed.

"...Maybe I imagined it."

But her voice lacked conviction.

Because she did not believe it.

Neither did he.

---

Far beyond the stars...

Far beyond the reach of mortals...

Two crimson eyes opened in the darkness.

Vast.

Ancient.

Endless.

A deep voice echoed through the void.

"So..."

Silence.

"You can sense me."

A smile slowly spread.

"How... interesting."

Ancient chains groaned.

Power crackled like distant thunder.

"But not yet."

The voice was amused.

"No..."

"Not yet."

The smile widened.

Became hungry.

Became cruel.

"Soon."

Silence.

"Very soon."

---

Back in the Midnight Exchange—

Fenrir suddenly stopped walking.

A chill ran through him.

He slowly looked toward the darkening horizon.

The last rays of sunlight were fading.

Night was coming.

And with it—

something terrible.

"...Something's coming," he whispered.

Above him, the first star appeared.

Then another.

And somewhere beyond them all—

something smiled.
