Chapter 20 - C-20:Promises and Invitations

Chapter 20: Promises and Invitations

The Moonlit Tea Room held its breath in a golden hush, cradling warmth like a secret too precious to release.

Steam curled from porcelain cups, lanterns breathed soft halos into the air, and time itself seemed to curl up beside them, reluctant to move.

The night had settled into something deeper than silence—

Into comfort.

Thick and honeyed, wrapping around each soul like a well-worn cloak.

Fenrir, who had spent years building walls between himself and the world, found his defenses softening.

He almost didn't notice when the quiet became companionship.

Almost.

Then—

"Another question."

His head lifted, slow as a tide turning.

"...I thought we were done."

"We were."

"Then why ask?"

Yuna's white fox ears flicked, delicate as moonlight on water. Her nine snowy tails fanned behind her like plumes of silver mist.

"Because it just slipped into my mind."

"Sigh."

"What now?"

She grinned, radiant and entirely unrepentant.

"What do you do on your birthday?"

A pause.

A stillness so complete it felt like the room itself had leaned in.

Fenrir blinked.

"...Birthday?"

"Yes."

"I know what it is."

"Then answer."

He stared into the depths of his tea, as if the leaves might spell out a better life.

"I stay home, buy a cake, then eat it."

"And then?" Kael pressed.

"I read."

Silence pooled like spilled ink.

Yuna recoiled as if struck.

"That's the most tragic birthday I've ever heard."

Fenrir frowned.

"But I like it."

"No. That's not allowed. Birthdays are meant to sparkle."

"They do. In my way."

"You spend them alone!"

"I enjoy being alone."

The others exchanged glances—gentle, pitying, human.

"...That's kind of sad," Adrian murmured.

"You're all being insufferably nosy tonight."

Laughter bloomed, light and sudden.

---

Yuna tilted her head.

"What about presents?"

"I don't get any."

He said it quietly.

Almost absentmindedly.

The air stilled.

Not just quiet—

Hushed.

As if the walls themselves had drawn closer.

Even Fenrir felt it.

The weight of their stares.

Heavy with unspoken sorrow.

"...Why are you all looking at me like I'm a ghost at my own funeral?"

"No reason," Selene whispered.

"That's obviously a lie."

No one corrected her.

No one spoke.

Even Seraphina's expression softened.

The crimson-haired vampire lowered her teacup slowly, her golden eyes lingering on him for a few moments longer than before.

---

Then—

"Question."

Fenrir sighed.

"Here we go."

Kael folded his arms.

"What kind of person do you want to become?"

The question landed like a stone in still water.

Fenrir stared into the ripples it made inside him.

Long moments passed.

"I don't really know."

A beat.

Then—

"But…"

His gaze dropped to his cup.

"I think…"

A faint smile touched his lips.

"I'd like to be someone dependable."

The words hung trembling in the air.

"Someone who can protect the people who matter to him."

His voice dipped.

"Someone who doesn't regret his choices."

A whisper followed.

"And someone who can smile… really smile… without pretending."

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Then Raphael smiled.

"That's a good answer."

Fenrir looked up.

"You think so?"

"I do."

Adrian nodded.

"It's… surprisingly ordinary."

"...Thank you?"

"It was a compliment."

Even Seraphina gave a small nod.

"It suits you."

Fenrir blinked.

"...Thank you?"

A faint smile appeared on her beautiful face.

"You're welcome."

---

"Question!"

Fenrir groaned.

"Yuna, you've already broken the rules twice."

"I've redefined them. Flexibility is a virtue."

"No, you just don't play by rules."

"Exactly."

She beamed.

Then she leaned forward.

"What kind of girl do you like?"

Silence crashed down.

Absolute.

Electric.

Fenrir blinked.

"...Eh?"

"You heard me."

"How did we jump from destiny to dating?"

"I asked. You answer."

Every eye in the room sharpened.

Even Elena turned.

Even Seraphina looked up from her tea.

Fenrir felt cornered.

Exposed.

Like a deer caught in the glow of a thousand lanterns.

"...Do I have to?"

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

He glanced toward Aetherion.

The old man's lips twitched.

"I thought you were on my side."

They all stared at him.

"Urgh… fine."

Fenrir exhaled slowly.

"...Someone kind."

A pause.

"Someone honest."

Yuna nodded solemnly.

"Continue."

"Someone I can trust."

Another pause.

"And…"

His voice softened.

"I'd like someone who stays."

The room went utterly still.

Not just quiet.

Reverent.

Because they understood.

Someone who wouldn't vanish.

Someone who wouldn't turn away.

Someone who would stand beside him when the shadows came.

Selene's eyes shimmered.

Elena's gaze softened.

And for a brief moment…

Something gentle flickered in Seraphina's golden eyes.

Yuna smiled slowly.

"That's… really sweet."

Fenrir flushed.

"I don't know why I said that."

"Because I'm irresistible."

"No."

Laughter sparkled through the room.

---

Then Kael asked,

"What about appearance?"

"Why are you involved?"

"Because I'm curious."

Fenrir sighed.

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"No."

"Seriously?"

"I've never thought about it."

Silence.

Yuna studied him.

Then Elena.

Then Selene.

Then Seraphina.

The vampire looked entirely unbothered, calmly sipping her tea.

Then Yuna looked at herself.

Then back at him.

"...I don't believe you."

"It's true."

The fox spirit looked genuinely wounded.

Then—

For the first time in a while, Seraphina spoke.

"I believe him."

Everyone looked at her.

Fenrir blinked.

"You do?"

She nodded once.

"You don't strike me as someone who pays attention to appearances."

Her golden eyes met his.

"You pay attention to people."

Silence.

Fenrir looked surprised.

"...I never thought about it that way."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"I did."

The atmosphere suddenly became strange.

Yuna's smile widened.

"Oh…"

Seraphina looked at her.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"It is clearly something."

"I said nothing."

The fox spirit looked entirely too pleased with herself.

Meanwhile, Fenrir looked completely lost.

"...I feel like I'm missing something."

"You are," Kael said.

"What is it?"

"You'll figure it out eventually."

"That doesn't help."

"No, but it's entertaining."

A few people laughed.

Even Seraphina's lips curved slightly upward.

---

Then—

A chime.

Soft.

Silver.

Wrong.

Everyone froze.

A second.

A third.

The air thickened.

The mirror on the wall shivered.

Words bloomed across its surface.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

NOTICE

THE EXISTENCE OF THE YOUNG SOVEREIGN HAS BEEN CONFIRMED.

MULTIPLE FACTIONS HAVE BECOME ACTIVE.

CAUTION ADVISED.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The warmth bled from the room.

Fenrir looked around.

"...That's me, isn't it?"

"Yes," Adrian said.

"Oh."

Silence.

"...That sounds bad."

"It is."

"How bad?"

"Extremely bad."

"...Oh."

---

The mirror rippled again.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

ADDITIONAL NOTICE

SEVERAL ANCIENT ENTITIES HAVE AWAKENED.

CAUSE UNKNOWN.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The quiet deepened.

Fenrir raised his hand.

"...Question."

Nobody stopped him.

"What's an ancient entity?"

Silence.

Then—

"Something that can erase kingdoms."

"Oh."

"Some can unmake worlds."

"Oh."

A pause.

"...I liked it better when I didn't know."

A few nervous laughs escaped.

---

Aetherion sighed.

"The hidden world knows you now."

His silver eyes gleamed.

"Everything changes."

Silence.

"Some will seek you."

"Okay."

"Some will fear you."

"Also okay."

"And others…"

He didn't finish.

Fenrir waited.

Then—

"...Will want me dead."

The room froze.

He didn't flinch.

Didn't blink.

Instead—

"That sounds… inconvenient."

Everyone stared.

"...That's all?" Kael asked.

"What else should I say? I don't have a dramatic monologue prepared."

A few laughs broke through.

---

Fenrir looked around.

"What do I do now?"

Silence.

Then—

"You grow stronger," Kael said.

"You learn," Raphael added.

"You survive," Adrian finished.

"...That sounds difficult."

"It will be," Elena said.

Then she met his eyes.

"But you won't be alone."

Silence.

Everyone turned toward her.

The dragon woman blinked.

"...What?"

Yuna's smile stretched.

"Oh…"

"What?"

"Nothing."

"It's clearly something."

"I said nothing."

Even Seraphina looked away to hide a small smile.

---

Raphael smiled.

"The Heavenly Dominion welcomes you."

Adrian smirked.

"The Night Court's doors remain open."

Kael crossed his arms.

"The Northern Tribes offer shelter and strong drink."

Selene smiled warmly.

"The Witch Council's libraries are yours."

Then Seraphina set down her teacup.

The room turned toward her.

The beautiful vampire looked directly at Fenrir.

"And the Crimson Estate welcomes you as well."

Fenrir blinked.

"...You have an estate?"

A tiny smile appeared.

"I do."

"Oh."

A pause.

"...I don't know why that's surprising."

"It shouldn't be."

A few people laughed.

---

The dwarves suddenly leapt to their feet.

"And our forges!"

"Our workshops!"

"Our kitchens!"

"...Why kitchens?" Fenrir asked.

"You need lessons. Badly."

The room exploded in laughter.

Even Fenrir laughed.

A real laugh.

Unfiltered.

Unafraid.

---

And for the first time in longer than he could remember…

Something warm stirred in his chest.

Like a seed cracking open beneath winter snow.

He looked around.

At smiling faces.

At open doors.

At invitations offered not to a legend…

But to him.

To Fenrir.

Not the Last God Devourer.

Not a prophecy.

Just…

A boy who liked quiet birthdays and honest answers.

It felt strange.

Dangerously warm.

Like stepping into sunlight after a lifetime underground.

---

Yuna smiled.

"You should visit everyone."

"That sounds exhausting."

"It sounds fun."

"I think our definitions of fun are wildly different."

"They are."

Laughter again.

Then softly, Yuna added—

"But I hope you do."

A pause.

"We'd like to know you better."

No one disagreed.

Even Elena gave the smallest nod.

Even Seraphina's golden eyes remained on him for a few extra moments.

And for reasons he couldn't name…

That made something inside him settle.

Smile.

"...I'd like that too."

Warmth returned.

Slow and sure.

Like a hearth rekindled.
