"Can I get another, Mama? Lunch isn't until later," Raiki said, looking up at his mom with his big purple eyes. The little guy finished his pretty quick.
She sighed and walked back over the stall. "Alright, fine. But this is the last one. Also, don't think I didn't see you eyeing those sweets."
He giggled and ran on ahead as if chasing a fluttering butterfly. His laughter echoed through the market, a bright, joyful sound that seemed to momentarily lift the town's pervasive gloom.
"He's a good kid," Noel said, watching him with a fond expression. "A handful, but a good kid."
"He is," Amaya said, her gaze fixed on her son. "He's all I have left of his father."
