Chapter 63 - Chapter 62: The Void of Truth

The world around them dissolved in an instant, fading into nothingness. The ground beneath their feet vanished, replaced by an endless expanse of blackness. The citizens of Corintopia, the soldiers, the warriors, and the Core Seven themselves found themselves floating in a void, suspended in a place where time and space seemed to lose all meaning.

Panic set in as the people realized they were no longer in their city. Voices filled the void, whispering in confusion, fear thickening the air. The crowd surged around the Core Seven, thousands upon thousands of faces staring at them with wide, uncertain eyes. But as the Core Seven looked around, they realized this was no longer just the people of Corintopia.

Stretching out as far as the eye could see were countless others—men, women, children—more people than they had ever imagined. It wasn't just Corintopia. It was everyone. Every living person on Earth had been brought to this place, this empty void. Millions, perhaps billions, of souls were present, all waiting, watching, unsure of what was to come.

"What... what is this?" Junna whispered, her voice barely audible as she scanned the faces around her.

"We're not alone," Dmitri said, his voice low, as the realization began to sink in. "This is... everyone. Every living person..."

Before anyone could respond, the oppressive silence was broken by a voice that echoed across the void, filling every corner of the endless expanse.

Tel-Nu.

"I told you," the voice of Tel-Nu began, calm but filled with a sense of cold, calculating power, "that when your time came, you would not face it in the safety of your private chambers, hidden from the world's eyes."

The Core Seven froze as the voice washed over them. The people around them, who had once looked to them for guidance and protection, now stared in confusion, waiting for an explanation that never came.

"No," Tel-Nu continued, his voice dripping with malice. "You will face your deaths in front of the entire world. The same world you claimed to protect. The same world you betrayed."

A wave of confusion rippled through the crowd as Tel-Nu's words hung in the air. The people looked at one another, their faces reflecting the growing uncertainty. What could Tel-Nu mean? What betrayal? What had the Core Seven done?

The Core Seven stood in the center of the crowd, their faces pale. Delson Sr. glanced around, his mind racing. There had to be a way out of this, a way to explain what was happening. But the truth was, even he didn't fully understand the accusations being thrown at them.

As if sensing their thoughts, Tel-Nu's voice returned, sharper this time, more intense. "Look around you," he hissed. "Look at the faces of the people you swore to protect. These are the faces that will witness your trial."

The Core Seven glanced around, meeting the eyes of the millions of people surrounding them. Confusion, uncertainty, and fear stared back at them, but no one spoke. It was as if the entire world was holding its breath, waiting for what came next.

"What is he talking about?" a voice from the crowd murmured. "What did they do?"

The whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire. People turned to one another, searching for answers, their gazes flickering back to the Core Seven with growing suspicion.

"Why are we here?" another voice asked. "Why did Tel-Nu bring us here?"

"Tell us the truth!" someone shouted, their voice piercing the uneasy silence.

The Core Seven exchanged tense glances, their hands tightening around their weapons. Junna's hand instinctively gripped the hilt of her sword, her knuckles white. Cormac folded his arms, his usually calm expression now creased with concern. Kira stood still, her sharp eyes scanning the endless crowd, searching for any clue of what was to come.

Suddenly, Tel-Nu's voice cut through the murmurs, louder and colder than before.

"Do you feel it now?" he asked, his voice carrying a weight that made the crowd fall silent once again. "The fear. The uncertainty. The doubt. They do not trust you anymore. They can feel the lies in your hearts."

The Core Seven stood frozen, their eyes wide as Tel-Nu continued.

"You built this city. This sanctuary. You claimed to protect these people, to rebuild after the apocalypse. And yet, here we are. Surrounded by the very souls you once swore to defend. And they are beginning to doubt you."

"No," Delson Sr. whispered under his breath, shaking his head. "No, that's not true."

But the voice of Tel-Nu didn't waver. "You can feel it, can't you? The weight of their expectations pressing down on you. The trust you once held in your hands slipping away."

"We didn't... betray anyone," Junna said, her voice strained as she looked around, searching for any sign of support. "We did everything we could to protect them."

"Protect them?" Tel-Nu's voice echoed through the void, filled with disdain. "You did nothing but protect yourselves. Everything you did—every wall you built, every decision you made—was to save yourselves from the consequences of your actions."

The people began to murmur again, their confusion giving way to anger. Delson Sr. could feel the pressure building. He had to say something, anything to calm the crowd.

"We did everything we could!" Delson Sr. shouted, his voice trembling as he tried to meet the eyes of the people surrounding him. "We built Corintopia to protect you, to give you a chance to rebuild after the world was shattered. We saved as many as we could!"

"Liar."

The single word cut through the air like a blade. It was filled with so much venom, so much hatred, that it made the entire world seem to hold its breath.

Tel-Nu spoke again, his voice now a low hiss, filled with malice and disgust. "You are nothing but liars. All of you. The Core Seven—a name you gave yourselves to mask the truth. To hide from the people you claim to serve."

The Core Seven recoiled as if struck. The crowd around them grew restless, murmurs turning to angry whispers as Tel-Nu's accusations began to sink in.

"It's time for your trial," Tel-Nu continued, his voice rising. "The trial of the Core Seven."

He spat their title as if it were poison in his mouth. The hatred, the malice in his voice was palpable, filling the void with a sense of impending doom.

"One by one," Tel-Nu growled, "you will face judgment. And the truth will be revealed."

The crowd fell into a stunned silence, their eyes fixed on the Core Seven. The once-mighty protectors of humanity now stood in the center of it all, surrounded by millions of souls, their fate hanging in the balance.

And the truth—whatever it was—was about to come crashing down.
