Chapter 46 - Chapter 45: The Monk’s Vigilance

The flickering light from the torches cast long shadows on the stone walls of the Temple Lodge as Cormac stood at the head of the room, his arms folded across his chest. His brow was furrowed in thought, and his usual calm demeanor was replaced with a sense of quiet intensity. His aides, seated around the long stone table, were silent, waiting for him to speak. The fourth ring had always been more than just a residential district—it was a sanctuary, a place of refuge for the citizens of Corintopia, and Cormac had made it his duty to ensure their safety.

But like the others in the Core Seven, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled over him. The silence from Tel-Nu was disconcerting, and no matter how much they had prepared, the quiet felt like the calm before the storm.

Cormac let out a deep breath, his voice low but steady as he addressed his aides. "We've been discussing this for weeks now, and I'm sure you've all felt it. The silence from Tel-Nu is unsettling. The Core Seven are concerned about it, and I share those concerns. I don't like it when an enemy goes quiet, especially one as dangerous as Tel-Nu."

His aides nodded, their expressions reflecting the same unease that Cormac felt. They had been working tirelessly to prepare the fourth ring for the possibility of an attack, but the uncertainty of when—or if—it would come weighed heavily on them.

Kael, one of Cormac's senior aides and the head of the district's fortifications, leaned forward. "We've reinforced the gates in all four cardinal directions, and the bunkers are fully stocked with supplies. We've also run several evacuation drills with the citizens, ensuring they know where to go in case of an attack. But if Tel-Nu is truly planning something, we need to be ready for more than just a standard assault."

Cormac nodded, his expression grim. "You're right. Tel-Nu isn't a typical enemy. His power is beyond anything we've ever faced, and that means we have to prepare for the unexpected. We need to make sure that the citizens of this ring are ready for anything, not just a breach in the walls. We need to ensure they know exactly where to go and how to protect themselves when the time comes."

Kael tapped the edge of the table thoughtfully. "The evacuation drills have gone well so far, but we haven't tested them under extreme circumstances. We could run a mock scenario, something that simulates a real attack. It would be difficult, but it would show us where any weak points are in our evacuation process."

Cormac considered this for a moment, then nodded in agreement. "Do it. The more prepared we are, the better. I want to make sure that every quadrant of the fourth ring knows exactly what to do when the alarms go off. No confusion, no panic. Everyone must be in their assigned bunkers as quickly and efficiently as possible."

One of the other aides, Rhea, spoke up next. She was in charge of organizing the shelters and ensuring they were fully equipped for long-term use. "We've stocked the shelters with food, water, and medical supplies. But if we're looking at an extended siege or a situation where the citizens need to stay underground for an extended period, we might need to consider additional measures—more long-term supplies, and perhaps better ventilation systems."

Cormac's gaze shifted to Rhea, and he nodded slowly. "Good thinking. If we're dealing with Tel-Nu, there's no telling how long we might have to hold out. Make the necessary adjustments to ensure that the bunkers are fully equipped for long-term use. We can't afford to be caught unprepared."

The room fell into a contemplative silence for a moment as Cormac's words settled over them. The stakes were high, and they all knew that the fourth ring would play a crucial role in the city's defense. If Tel-Nu managed to break through the outer defenses, the fourth ring would be the last line of protection for the civilians, and they needed to be ready for anything.

Joren, one of Cormac's tactical advisors, spoke next, his tone measured but filled with concern. "We've reinforced the gates, but Tel-Nu's power is… different. We can't just rely on physical barriers to keep him out. What if he bypasses the gates entirely? We need to have a contingency plan in case the outer defenses are breached."

Cormac's eyes narrowed slightly, his mind racing through the possibilities. "You're right. Tel-Nu's abilities are beyond what we've seen before. Physical defenses might not be enough to stop him. We'll need to fortify the inner sanctums, the bunkers themselves. If he does manage to get past the gates, the citizens will need to be protected underground."

He turned to Kael and Rhea. "Double the fortifications on the bunkers. I don't care what it takes—make sure that even if Tel-Nu gets through the gates, the people are safe underground. I also want contingency plans in place for moving the citizens deeper into the underground tunnels if necessary."

The tension in the room was palpable, but Cormac's calm, methodical approach to the situation helped ease some of the anxiety his aides were feeling. They had all seen what Tel-Nu was capable of—his power was beyond comprehension, and they couldn't afford to underestimate him.

After a moment of silence, Kael spoke up again. "We'll run another set of drills, more intense this time. I'll personally oversee the fortifications of the bunkers and make sure that everything is ready. I'll also work with Rhea to ensure the shelters are equipped for long-term use."

Cormac nodded in approval. "Good. I'll oversee the drills myself as well. I want every citizen to be ready for whatever comes. This ring is our responsibility, and we won't let Tel-Nu tear it apart."

The room was quiet for a moment, the weight of Cormac's words hanging in the air. They all knew what was at stake. Corintopia's safety, and possibly the future of humanity itself, depended on their preparations.

"Tel-Nu is unlike any enemy we've faced before," Cormac continued, his voice steady but filled with resolve. "We've prepared for as much as we can, but we need to be ready for anything. I don't know when he'll strike, but I know this: when he does, we will be ready. We'll protect the people, no matter what."

The aides nodded in agreement, their determination renewed. They had always trusted Cormac's leadership, and now, more than ever, they needed to rely on his wisdom and strength. The fourth ring was in capable hands, and with Cormac leading the way, they knew they would be as prepared as possible for the coming storm.

As the meeting concluded and his aides began to leave the room, Cormac stood for a moment, his gaze lingering on the large map of Corintopia that hung on the wall. The city's fate rested on the shoulders of the Core Seven, and each of them had a role to play.

The quiet may have unnerved them all, but Cormac knew one thing for certain: when the time came, they would be ready to face Tel-Nu, no matter the cost.
