Chapter 118 - The Battle Begins (1)

The Black Roses struck first, their battle plan unfolding as a formidable unit of 300 skilled archers lined up with precision. With weapons drawn, they focused their attention on Quin's forces, unleashing a hailstorm of arrows aimed to not only drive them back but also to create a rift among the ranks of the Ironside soldiers.

In response to this onslaught, Hajdah, accompanied by five powerful mages, sprang into action. Combining their abilities—fire, earth, wind, and water—they worked in unison to intercept the deadly projectiles soaring towards them. Fiery bursts incinerated some arrows mid-flight, while earth barricades shattered others upon impact. The wind mage skillfully manipulated gusts to redirect multiple volleys back towards the archers, turning their own weapons against them. Suhail alone had nothing to offer the screen. Lightning turned nothing aside. So he spent the volley the only way his element allowed, hurling jagged bolts down the slope and into the massed ranks of the archers.

"Laika! Use your Water Wall!" Hajdah commanded urgently, his voice cutting through the chaos of battle. The water mage, with a slight nod, closed her eyes and began the incantation. Her mana surged, causing her eyes to radiate a brilliant blue glow. Almost instantaneously, a massive wall of water materialized around the dwarven soldiers, shimmering under the dim light of the battlefield. The wall absorbed the raging storm of arrows, deflecting them backward with tremendous force, sending a flurry of projectiles hurtling back towards the mercenaries.

Rudolf, rallying his troops in frustration, cursed, "Damn! So, the mages' guild has thrown their lot in with the prince! Slave! Destroy that wall! We mustn't let them neutralize our archers!" His voice was thick with anger as he directed his commands at Rya.

"Slave! Obey the command!" shouted Jeremiah, the glint of the slaver tool enticing compliance from the unwilling Rya.

Inside her mind, a flurry of emotions surged: 'Why is my body moving without my consent?' she thought furiously. 'I'll aim higher to avoid hitting them!' Resolving to regain a semblance of control, Rya stomped her foot directly into the ground. The earth trembled beneath her as a huge rock, the size of a cannonball, levitated into the air at her command. With a swift, determined strike, she sent the rock smashing against the imposing water wall, creating a colossal rupture that sent torrents of water cascading through the battlefield, drenching soldiers in mud and chaos.

*CRASH!*

*SLASH!*

"Get up! Get up! You're not dead yet!" a desperate dwarven soldier yelled as he struggled against the viscous muck, trying to pull his muddied comrade from the depths of the flood.

"What was that!? That attack came from the dark elf! How is she so powerful!?" Akashia, the Wind Mage, exclaimed, her voice trembling with disbelief.

"Enough!" Hajdah shouted back, his tone grave and commanding. "She aimed high so we wouldn't be harmed! She is fighting against the slave collar, but time is running out! We cannot afford to hesitate any longer! Every moment wasted gives them more time to use her against us!" The urgency in his voice echoed across the battlefield as he struggled to maintain control of the unfolding chaos.

"LOOSE!" Rudolf commanded, his voice cutting through the chaos of battle like a blade through the air. The Black Roses' archers, positioned high atop the muddy embankment, let loose their deadly barrage. Arrows rained down like a dark storm, but the shimmering water shield Laika conjured around herself and a few of the mages held strong, turning many of the projectiles aside as they bounced harmlessly off the magical barrier.

"Raise your shield!" a grizzled dwarf in the front line shouted, his weathered face a mask of determination. In unison, the dwarves, stout and resolute, lifted their sturdy iron shields, bracing for the onslaught to come.

*ZIP! ZIP! ZIP! ZIP! ZIP! ZIP! YAH! ZIP! ZIP! CLING! ZIP!*

The second volley of arrows sliced through the air, some slipping past the protective barrier, embedding themselves in the shoulders of unfortunate soldiers, who cried out in pain as they stumbled back. Laika's barrier guttered and broke, the water collapsing into the churned mud at her feet. She swayed, breathing hard, her mana spent.

"Their shields are down!" Rudolf bellowed, his voice resonating across the battlefield as orders shifted like the ebb and flow of the tide.

With a mighty crash, the third volley struck the shield wall, the force of the impact knocking several soldiers back, sending them skidding into the mud, their faces contorted with shock and dismay.

Quinus, feeling a surge of fiery determination, could no longer restrain himself. He drew his longsword high above his head, the blade catching the sunlight and igniting with a crimson glow, a fierce reflection of his resolve.

"LET THE SUN SMITE THEE!" Quinus roared, swinging his sword with a fierce battle cry directed at the Black Rose archers.

*BOOM!*

A blinding light erupted from his weapon, illuminating the grim battlefield as it radiated outward. The archers found themselves momentarily blinded, their trained eyes stinging in the brilliance. Bows fell from nerveless fingers, the weapons useless as a wall of flames surged towards them, consuming everything in its path.

"Slave! Protect us!" Jeremiah shouted amidst the confusion, his voice reaching Rya, who focused her energy. With a determined thought, she conjured a robust rock wall that rose swiftly to shield Jeremiah and the men nearest to her, the sound of grinding stone competing with the chaos of combat.

'Come on! Not a big wall!' Rya thought urgently, her brow furrowing as she fought to keep the stone low and poorly placed, leaving the archers exposed to the fire rolling toward them. Some of them were already burning.

"Charge! Charge!" Rudolf's voice rang out, igniting the spirits of his troops. The mercenaries, adrenaline coursing through their veins, surged forward with aggressive determination.

"Defensive position! Defensive position!" Zellin barked at his men, his eyes narrowed as he steeled himself for the incoming wave.

"Shoot!" Hajdah ordered, his voice rising above the din as his archers complied, letting loose a storm of arrows that plummeted toward the advancing Black Roses.

*ZIP! ZIP! CLING! ZIP! AAAHHHH! ZIP!*

The mercs collided with the shield wall of the dwarves, the sound of metal crashing against dwarven iron reverberating through the air.

One mercenary, eyes wide with rage and desperation, charged straight toward Quinus and Sir George, who stood resolutely in the front line, weapons poised.

"PREPARE FOR COMBAT!" Sir George shouted, raising his shield while his sword gleamed, ready for the fight.

"I got this one!" Quinus declared with fierce confidence, lunging forward with practiced grace.

*CLANG!*

The sound of steel meeting steel rang out as the two combatants clashed; then came the swift *SWING!* of Quinus's sword, followed by a sickening *SPLAT!* as the blade pierced the mercenary's body.

"You're next!" Sir George yelled, his voice laced with urgency as he swung his shield expertly, the impact knocking the mercenary away, creating a momentary opening.

*SWING!* *SLAM!*

"Not bad!" Quinus remarked, a hint of camaraderie breaking through the tension of the moment as he fought alongside his friend, but then he saw him. Standing there with the crown of a fallen king and the woman he loved with a collar around her neck. "He's here!"

"What?" Sir George asked, bewildered by the distraction. "Wait! My Lord! We need a plan to take care of the Kings Slayer and their Commander, Rudolf!"

"This is my burden, George… Watch my back," Quinus replied, his gaze focused and unflinching as he looked down at the lifeless body of the man he had just felled. He was already turning to face another foe, his sword arcing through the air as he slashed down at the next adversary bearing down on him. His goal was clear. He just hoped that he was strong enough to save her.
