As the horizon began to lighten with the first glimmers of dawn, the notorious Black Rose Mercenaries marched steadily across the plains. By the time they reached the open expanse of the Galfrei Plains, the sun had fully risen, casting a golden glow upon the battlefield. There, 3,000 Ironside soldiers stood resolute, their formidable presence elevated on the higher ground. Each warrior was armed to the teeth; swords gleamed menacingly in the morning light, spears were poised, and bows bent under the tension of taut strings, while crossbows awaited their deadly projectiles. Clad in leather armor reinforced with iron plating, they were not only shielded but also poised to strike, the thick iron plates of their shields glinting defiantly against the dawn.
At the forefront of the line stood Quinus, Sir George, Hajdah, and Baron Zellin, their expressions grave and contemplative. The weight of what was to come hung heavily in the air, their frowns revealing their understanding of the dire situation they faced. They could feel the stakes rising higher with each passing moment.
Overseeing this bold assembly was Captain Reeve Wyntor, the steadfast leader of the Ironside Army. In his late thirties, this human swordsman was a fixture in Ironside's military echelon. Growing up in the city and enlisting at the young age of eighteen, he had risen through the ranks to become a seasoned captain, distinguished by his reputation for fairness yet feared for his mercilessness when the need arose. His steady gaze swept over the assembled warriors, instilling confidence in his men as he prepared for the battle ahead.
Alongside them were five other formidable mages from the Guild, each possessing their unique elemental prowess. Laika, a dwarf water mage, stood ready, her talent not only in combat but also in the artistic finesse of cutting gems with her water magic. There was a bittersweet memory associated with her, as Hajdah had intended to introduce her to Rya before her abrupt capture.
The quartet of dwarven mages were Kyan, a fire mage whose fiery temperament matched his abilities; Suhail, a lightning mage known for his quick and decisive attacks; Akashia, a wind mage with a graceful yet tempestuous command of the air; and Dreshan, an earth magician whose strength lay in his ability to manipulate the very land beneath their feet.
With the impending battle looming, Zellin cast a somber glance over his assembled comrades. "We will make these bastards pay dearly for enslaving your friend and daring to threaten my city," he declared, a grim determination etched into his features.
"I agree," Sir George echoed, his voice laced with conviction. "These scum deserve no mercy." The words resonated within the hearts of the warriors, solidifying their resolve as they stood ready to confront the approaching storm.
Quinus had a pained look when he picked Rya out of the enemy line, a slight figure standing where the Kings Slayer stood. The collar was too far off to see. Knowing it was on her throat was enough.
'Rya!... George is right, but if I can get everyone out of this without bloodshed, then I have to take it.' Quin thought to himself. "Yeah, they don't deserve mercy. But if no dwarves have to die, then I will give them one chance to release Rya. Let's go and see how they wish to die, peacefully in old age or here on these plains," Quinus added.
Zellin and Hajdah were surprised that the prince would want to talk. They both looked at each other and nodded.
"Your Highness. We, dwarves, will never back down from a fight with cowards. Do what you need to do, Prince Quinus," Zellin said with a smirk.
"My Lord? What are you going to do?" Sir George asked with concern in his voice.
"Don't worry about me. Whatever may happen, we will not fall here. No matter what," Quinus said with a smile.
The Black Roses marched on, and Rya went with them, the Kings Slayer at her side. Ahead, the Ironside line stood unmoving on the high ground, planted across the open road east—between the Black Roses and the city they had come to take.
Rudolf's column halted a mile short of the slope.

Rudolf was looking over the Ironside army.
'Hmph! The prince thinks having more soldiers will help him win this war.' Rudolf thought.
He still believed he wouldn't lose to such weakling soldiers compared to his mercenaries.
"Commander! Looks like the prince wishes to meet with you. They're waving the emissary flag."
That's when he saw the prince along with four other men riding horses coming towards the middle of the plains, halfway between the two armies.
'A meeting? So, he wishes to see the man that's going to kill him close up first. Pff. The little boy thinks he's a man. Fine, let's see what this boy is going to demand from me.' Rudolf thought.
"Jeremiah, stay here with the asset! Dietrich! Falk! Devin! Alac! With me! We're going to talk to the prince!" Rudolf shouted.
The four men saluted and followed their commander.
"How much do you want to bet that the Toothless Lion wants his toy back?" Jeremiah asked.
"He's a royal. They can't be trusted. But I won't mind seeing him cry to me, begging for his life," Rudolf said before riding off to meet the prince with four of his men.

Rya, for the first time in her life, couldn't help but stare at Quinus. It felt like years since she'd last seen him. Her emotions were going all over the place. She was happy to see him, but the entire experience made her feel sick.
It was all her fault that Quin was in this predicament. If only she wasn't so stubborn in proving the Goddesses wrong about her not changing mentally into a straight woman. If she didn't try to force things, everything would have been fine. Rya so desperately wished to save him and the army that came here mostly for her. She didn't know what to think, really.
'Quin! I swear I'll make this up to you when I get out of this mess.' Rya thought.
Luckily, her dark elven eyes and ears let her hear and see everything that was going on with the meeting between Quinus and Rudolf.

"So, boy! What do you wish to discuss on this fine morning?" Rudolf drawled, his voice dripping with cold disdain. The sun hung low in the sky, casting an eerie glow over the tension-filled battlefield.
Sir George clenched his jaw as he heard Rudolf belittle his lord, a burning anger simmering just beneath the surface. He could feel the heat rising within him, but he kept his mouth shut, biting back the retort that threatened to escape.
Quinus, eyes narrowed and fists clenched, looked past Rudolf to the distant shape of the Kings Slayer. He could not make out what the man held. He knew what it had to be—a controller, and Rya on the other end of it with no chain in sight. His gaze refocused on Rudolf and his men, heart pounding with a mix of determination and apprehension.
"You know what I want," Quinus stated firmly, his voice steady but laced with an unyielding intensity. "Release her, or you and your men will never leave this battlefield."
Rudolf scoffed, his expression a mix of amusement and contempt. "What makes you think I would listen to some bratty boy who's lost his favorite toy?"
"SHE IS NOT AN OBJECT!" Sir George shouted, his voice like thunder, reverberating through the air and sending an electric shock of tension spiraling through the assembled warriors.
Rudolf, momentarily taken aback, raised a brow in response to the outburst. He was about to retort when he was interrupted.
"Make your decision, old man!" Quinus declared, his tone low and threatening, each word heavy with a barely masked fury. The golden hue of his eyes glinted in the morning light, a fierce determination pulsing through him that nearly made Rudolf falter. But then he reminded himself who stood before him—the Toothless Lion, the Crown Prince famed for his reluctance to take decisive action.
Rudolf's smirk widened. "I think not…boy…"
Quinus's patience had worn thin. "We know what you're planning! One of your men disclosed everything!" he shouted, his voice rising with the conviction of truth.
"You know nothing of our plans," Rudolf retorted dismissively, his voice cold and mocking. "Now run off home to your father, boy. You think you can confront us with…that sad little army of yours?"
"The real sad excuse is your overconfidence, Rudolf," Lord Zellin interjected, stepping forward, voice rising like a crescendo. "As the Crown Prince stated, we're aware of your intentions to seize Ironside and aid the Duke in assassinating the King! It was foolish of you to disregard the Prince's offer!"
Rudolf's eyes narrowed, the gears in his mind turning rapidly. 'Hmph! So this kid is aware of our plot. All the more reason to eliminate him and his dwarven companions,' he thought, a sinister smile creeping across his face.
"Well, I guess there isn't much choice left to us," Rudolf sighed theatrically, the mock-sorrow in his tone thinly veiling the malice beneath.
With a dismissive flick of his reins, Rudolf turned his horse around, signaling to his men. They rode back towards their army, the dust swirling around them, leaving a lingering tension that hung in the air like a storm waiting to break.

"I thought that kid was going to be a little more entertaining to toy with. Maybe he'll actually be worth my time when it comes to taking him down," Jeremiah said, his voice laced with a thick layer of sarcasm as he observed the prince from a distance, a smirk playing on his lips.
Even from half a mile away, Jeremiah could hear the prince's frustrated shouts directed at Rudolf, cutting through the air like the crack of a whip. "Don't underestimate your prey, Jeremiah! That boy is sharper than most royals we've encountered. He didn't flinch in the face of your antics, unlike the many nobles who would have crumbled under your intimidation. You'd be wise not to take him lightly," Rudolf cautioned, his tone as cold and unyielding as iron, his eyes steely with concern.
Jeremiah shrugged off the warning with a casual flick of his wrist. "Got it. SLAVE! Protect the Black Roses!" he bellowed, his authoritative voice echoing through the gathering shadows of the battlefield.

Quinus watched Rudolf ride away, a storm of fury brewing in his chest. The situation had spiraled into chaos because of that spoiled, arrogant fool, whose reckless decisions had led to the needless sacrifice of too many loyal men. Rudolf had grown accustomed to having his whims catered to, shielded from any real consequences for his actions.
"So, this is how it's going to unfold," Quinus muttered under his breath, a fierce determination setting into his features. He turned to his trusted companions with a commanding air. "Hajdah, gather the mages and prepare them for combat. Zellin, take your position at the rear of the formation and issue commands to the men. We need to anticipate their next move—despite our numbers, their soldiers are seasoned warriors, battle-hardened and formidable. We cannot afford to underestimate them." Quinus's voice carried the weight of leadership, igniting a fire in the hearts of those around him as he steeled himself for the impending conflict.
"Yes, sir. I'll take charge immediately," Zellin replied, his expression resolute as he moved quickly to gather the troops.
"Our magic will be at your command, Your Highness," Hajdah affirmed, confidence resonating in his voice as he stepped forward, ready to lend his powers to the cause.
With that, the stage was meticulously set, each player taking their position on the chessboard of fate. The Battle of Ironside loomed ominously on the horizon, a tempest waiting to be unleashed.
